The Pyron garden is one of the most popular spots along the Azalea Trail during Tyler’s annual Azalea and Spring Flower Trail each spring. This year, for the first time the garden will be transformed into a living nativity scene as part of Rose City Christmas. “I think since everyone is so busy during the Christmas season this event is more important than ever,” Joan Pyron, host of the event, said. “I hope that the people who visit the live nativity will slow down, enjoy the holidays, and remember the real reason for the season.” For more info or if you plan to participate by decorating your home or business, contact (903)592-6978 or email to stravis@tylertexas.com.

of Lopez, Rick Derringer, Kingfish Ingram, Trudy Lynn, Steve Krase, Wes Jeans, Gary Hoey, and more. Her talent has garnered her numerous awards with Ally taking second place in the “10 under 20” competition at the 2015 Dallas Guitar show, 2015 and 2016 Female Guitarist Of The Year, 2015, 2016, and 2017 Blues Band Of The Year, and 2017 Album of The Year at the ETX Music Awards, to name a few. Rounding out the band are veteran musician Bobby Wallace holding down the bass and classically trained musician and drummer Elijah Owings bringing the beat. AVB already has one album under their belt with “No Glass Shoes” which released in 2016 through Connor Ray Music, and they have another album on the way in 2018 that you won’t want to miss. For the beasts in this tale, we turn to Bibeau, the East Texas-based progressive rock band with blistering guitars, transcendent vocals, and boundless energy. Formed in 2009 by brothers Robin and Peyton Bibeau, sons of transplanted New Orleans native and veteran music exec Paul Bibeau, the band has already made their mark on the scene locally, regionally, and globally with a growing international fan base, a YouTube channel with thousands of views, and several positive reviews in industry magazines. With a full slate of shows coming up as well as work and school, these guys are constantly moving forward at a breakneck pace. Bibeau recently released their first single and video for “Mark This” worldwide. The video has surpassed 150,000 views and the single has been well received by radio and press all over the world. No stranger to a packed house and playing to audiences with high expectations, Bibeau has supported such rock powerhouses as John 5 and the Creatures, Red Sun Rising, and rock icon Ace Frehley. Bibeau takes its name from the brothers, Peyton and Robin, who founded the band originally with their dad after growing up immersed in music and musicians from his experiences as a music executive. After several evolutions over the years, the band has rounded out with a strong lineup of like-minded musicians, each possessing the talent and drive to grab success by the horns

Beauty and The Beasts:

Ally Venable and Bibeau Invade Clicks Live! By Johnny Griffith One of the great perks of this job is getting to listen to, and interview, a lot of great musicians from the East Texas area across a wide spectrum of genres and age groups. All things being equal, I always enjoy interviews with younger musicians just a little more as it gives me hope that the next generation of musicians is active and good caretakers of the art. This month, two up-and-coming bands I’ve had the privilege of interviewing the past year, Ally Venable and Bibeau, will be joining forces for a special concert at Clicks Live! November 25th. Doors open at 8pm, and the show starts at 9pm. At first glance, the pairing might seem a bit unusual as the artists come from differing genres; Venable being a young, blistering blues guitarist and vocalist and Bibeau being one of the premier progressive rock bands in the state, much less the region. Once you get past their differences, though, this is a showcase of two of the hottest breakout artists in the area, poised to own stages for years to come, both with new albums releasing in 2018, both bands seemingly destined to be yet two more success stories of musicians from this region who have gone on to be successful outside of this market. Venable, the beauty of our story, started her musical career out like so many in East Texas, by singing in church. Around the age of 10 or 11, she started listening to blues albums and the rest became history. After early experiments with piano and cello, Ally settled on the guitar and began writing music around the age of 12 or 13. Now 18, Venable and her band have been burning up stages in East Texas and beyond for several years. A veteran on the blues scene already, she has been mentored by Texas blues legend Lance Lopez and has taken the stage with the likes

and bend it to their will. Bibeau has been described as a “musical bridge between the classic power metal from the ‘70’s/‘80’s combined with the edge and attitude of today’s modern progressive rock bands.” That being said, they aren’t about to be put in any musical box anytime soon and have the musical skill to ensure they keep audiences coming back for more for years to come. I reached out to concert producer and proud parent of the Bibeau brothers, Paul Bibeau for some more details on this event: Johnny: How did the idea develop of putting these two bands, from different ends of the rock spectrum, together for one crazy night? Paul: We love Ally and her absolutely killer band of brothers! We love what they do, and we consider them friends. Bibeau is a modern throwback, and the last thing they want is to end up on live bills with very heavy bands. That’s not our audience. We feel that Bibeau has the potential to attract a large segment of music fans, young and older, male and female. Johnny: When did it go from being, “Hey this would be a cool idea” to “Hey, we’re really doing this?” Paul: Bibeau invited the Ally Venable Band to open the show Future Fest at Clicks in Tyler, an all ages show that highlighted young talent from the area. Ally really won over the audience (no surprise) and at the end of the day, it is all about the music. Young people have a lot of distractions. Music is art. Music taps into an individual’s creative nature and helps to allow for creative expression. Having two bands that may offer a different sonic experience is exciting to all of us.

Johnny: As someone who has been involved in music, and the business of music for decades, how exciting is it for you to see the next generation of musicians taking the stage full force and turning heads? Paul: I see the window opening again for guitar, bass, and drum driven music. Oddly enough, this area of Texas could be the next Seattle and has some major talent that can transcend and grow the musical landscape. From the Ally Venable Band to Blacktop Mojo, the area has got some major talent. Johnny: These two bands already have huge connections in the industry and fans that include some amazing artists, some of which I’m sure will be out for this show. Do you have any hints for who might be joining in for the end of the night jam? Paul: We are still putting it together, checking schedules and planning away. Trust me, for the cover charge of $7, you will receive a major market concert that you will be talking about for years to come! This concert will be a showcase of two of the hottest acts in this area. Both bands will perform full sets with an “all hands on deck” jam session to finish the evening out with some surprises that are sure to please. This will be a night 10 years from now that you’ll be talking about - when you were at Clicks the night two legendary acts, Beauty and the Beasts, shared a stage and brought the house down. Brian Chance:

Nothing Left To Chance By Johnny Griffith Spend more than five minutes around Brian Chance, and you’ll quickly realize that this isn’t a guy who, despite his last name, leaves things up to chance, but rather hangs his hat on natural talent, some hustle, and good old-fashioned hard work. The leader and frontman of the eponymous Brian Chance Band, Chance didn’t show an interest in music early like many of his peers in the East Texas music scene did, rather he discovered the bug late and is making up for lost time. Born in Palestine, Brian was raised in Jacksonville and has based the BCB there. Like many from this area, Chance went into the oil field after high school but after a while decided even though the money was good, there was something he was missing. Feeling a calling to have a more direct connection to people, he attended TJC and studied biology, eventually graduating with an Associate’s Degree with plans to become a Physician’s Assistant when life took a right turn. Having never really taken an interest in music or singing in high school, Brian was one day encouraged by a friend to get a guitar overhearing Chance playing around. Eventually, Brian did buy that guitar, started teaching himself to play, and worked up to writing music within a few months. Wanting to hone the craft, Brian would start going to concerts and taking notes on different styles in an attempt to not just be a musician, but an entertainer who could reach people from the stage. Fast forward four years, and Brian is now a full-time musician, working part-time gigs during the first half of the week until the weekend, and the next gig arrives for one of East Texas’ up and coming bands. I stopped in to get a little info on Brian and the band to share with the readers this month. Johnny: At what point did you decide that this crazy new music thing was something you wanted to do full time and pass up a more traditional career at this point? Brian: After I wrote a few songs and made some money on some gigs, I wanted to do it full time, but it was hard because I had no connections or anything since I started so late. I decided to try to make my own luck and just hustled as hard as I could with it. I found a really good band that believed in me, had an amazing support system at home, and worked my butt off to buy, sound, guitars, merch, and recordings all on my own. Johnny: Who are your current band lineup and a brief background on them? Brian: The lineup in my band right now is Ryan Wellman (lead guitarist) from Chandler, Kelly Kahea (drums) from Bullard, and Seth Hoar (bass) from Tyler. All together we have about 40 years of experience but have only been together as a band for a little over a year. Johnny: Who would you say your musical influences have been to this point? Brian: I have always been fascinated with music and the old outlaws like Waylon, Paycheck, Willie, Jones, and even grew up on Kurt Cobain and loved watching documentaries about them and how their songs made you feel. Music is a therapy and helped me deal with a lot so I wanted to help others. Johnny: With that wide of a range of influences, how would you describe your music? Brian: Our music could be described as Texas Country and nowadays that’s a broad definition, but I like to think of us as a Texas southern rock band. Johnny: I’ve heard you guys recently had an album release? Brian: Yes sir! We just released our first album “Goodbye So Long,” and it is out now for digital downloads on all platforms. Johnny: With you and the band trying to do this full time, how many shows a month are you guys currently playing?

Brian: We normally play 2-3 shows a week because the band has day jobs and families so I try not to push them too hard but also try to stay as steady as we can. Johnny: What are some of the challenges that come with devoting more time to playing gigs and traveling? Brian: The biggest challenge to me is making sure everything is lined out and try to plan ahead. It seems like something always goes wrong or someone is late so just trying to stay prepared and be ahead of everything and keeping up with everything myself is a challenge, between social media, designs, booking, public relations, sponsors, merch, and so much more, it can be a hassle. Johnny: Most every full-time musician has had to start with a good support base. Who has been your’s to this point? Brian: My biggest support base so far has been God and my family. I and the guys all get together and pray before every show and try to keep Him number one, and our families are one of the main reasons we keep going when it gets hard. They help us out and lift us back up so it’s a huge blessing to have a family like we have. Johnny: Every journey has memories. What has been your best one to date? Brian: The most memorable gig to date has to be between opening for Eli Young with 1,400 plus people there or opening for Parker Mccollum in College Station to a sold out crowd at the Tap. The energy in College Station was the best I’ve felt in a while and made us fall back in love with music and our fans all over again. It was one of those shows that reassured you that you were doing what you’re meant to do. Johnny: What’s your favorite cover song the Brian Chance Band does that nobody else is doing? What’s your favorite original right now? Brian: My favorite cover song we are doing right now is probably “Goodbye Earl” by the Dixie Chicks. I know it’s an unusual choice, but we put our own twist to it, and it always gets people’s attention with a reaction every time. Me and the band’s favorite original song we play is “Tired.” It is just raw and true and gets the college-age fans going. They love the upbeat vibe and catchy lyrics that kinda grab ahold and forces you to sing it, even a couple of days later. Johnny: Let’s say I’m out on the weekend looking for a live show to enjoy. What sets The Brian Chance Band apart from the other options I have? Brian: What I think sets us apart from other bands is our energy and just how all my guys are. You won’t find us sitting backstage to ourselves or anything like that. We are typically out mingling, talking, and interacting with people before, during, and after the show. We are upbeat, and you’ll want to dance and sing along and just let loose and leave all your worries at home or work, which is what music is all about. Johnny: What’s next on the horizon for the Brian Chance Band? Brian: The next thing on the horizon for the Brian Chance Band is to just keep on keepin’ on. We are going to start on our new album with some new artists and try to expand out of Texas and even into parts of Texas we haven’t reached yet. Hopefully, we have a 5th band member joining us pretty soon that can play some keys and guitar as well to add a little more depth in our lineup. Johnny: What’s your proudest accomplishment so far in your career as a musician? Brian: My proudest accomplishment is my new album “Goodbye So Long.” I watched my guys pour out their heart and soul on it while they played and just some of the songs on there are what I was going through at the time, and we did it all ourselves so it's super rewarding watching people sing along to something we all created. Be sure to check out the Brian Chance Band online for updates, new music, and upcoming shows at facebook.com/brianchanceband and reverbnation.com/brianchance.

Tyler Dudley:

Not Satisfied With Okay By Johnny Griffith A long time ago I was sitting in a classroom in college listening to a speaker talk about success and failure in business and in life. Of the many catch phrases and cliches thrown about that day, the one that stuck with me was this phrase, “Sometimes in life we find good things, and those good things keep us from the best things.” What the speaker was trying to imply was that we can sometimes find ourselves comfortable with our surroundings, safe from the uncertain storms, and content with where we are in life. That contentedness, however, can sometimes keep us from seeking something more, and in that something more, sometimes we find the best things. Whitehouse native Tyler Dudley just might be one of the best examples around for this philosophy that I’ve come across recently. Like many East Texans, Tyler discovered his first love of music in church, embracing it to the point of eventually leading worship and has maintained the love ever since. With early musical exposures to such a wide range of influences as John Mayer and George Strait, Dudley has developed his own voice and continues to pursue a love of music despite the challenges. After starting to work for a local Cavender’s his junior year in high school and working his way to assistant manager, Tyler began to realize what he really wanted to do was play music. Even though the job he had was a good thing, it wasn’t the best thing for him. Now, he plays every gig he can get and works toward a goal of releasing an album in the near future. I recently sat down with Tyler to get to know him better. Johnny: When did you really start thinking about music being more than a hobby? Tyler: About three years ago I was unhappy at my 9-5 job, and I just knew I wanted to do something that was going to make me happy. Music is that thing for me.

Johnny: What have been some of the challenges you’ve experience trying to realize music as a livelihood? Tyler: It’s not easy to get booked at places unless you have a name for yourself. To get a name for yourself you have to sacrifice time with the people you are close to. It really is a tough situation when you’re trying to break into the scene but it’s worth the work. Johnny: Who were your early influences musically? Tyler: I’ve always enjoyed John Mayer, King George (Strait), and the King of Pop (Michael Jackson). I’ve always enjoyed music from all over the spectrum and feel that there is too much good music being made not to enjoy it all. Johnny: How would you describe your music? Tyler: As much as I appreciate a lot of different genres, the music that I have been writing and love to really play the most is Red Dirt Texas Country Music. Johnny: How much of the music you perform is original versus cover songs? Tyler: Right now I’m doing about 75 percent covers and 25 percent originals. Obviously the goal is to eventually be 100 percent originals. Johnny: I like to ask all the musicians I interview what their most memorable gig has been so far, so what’s yours? Tyler: That’s easy; I was able to open up for my friends JB and the Moonshine Band at Cowboy’s earlier this year, and it was something I will certainly never forget. Johnny: How far are you traveling to play shows these days? Tyler: The farthest I go regularly right now is to Port Arthur to a place called Rodair Roadhouse. Johnny: Are you just primarily a solo act, or do you ever collaborate with other musicians? Tyler: I’ve played solo for the past two years, but recently I formed a band, and we’re currently pushing that format. Johnny: There are a lot of live acts around, especially in the “Country” genre. What do you feel sets you apart? Tyler: I think what sets me apart is that my

Chris Cunningham:

Not A One Trick Pony By Johnny Griffith Most musicians have a side gig, it’s just a fact of life. It’s challenging to support yourself, much less a family, on playing music just in this area. There are plenty of people who try it, and a few who succeed, but most of the time those who are successful find they eventually have to travel outside of the area to make ends meet. Aside from those few who are out burning up the roads to make the next gig, the rest of us either have careers, and in reality, the music is the side gig, or we pick up odd jobs to get us to the next show to make sure we pay the rent or car note. Occasionally you find a person whose side gig is an extension of their creativity, and the two forms of expression really build off each other, serving as not only a source of income, but inspiration as well. Forney native Chris Cunningham has found this balance between music, design, and family using it to be better at all three things. When he’s not playing a gig around the area with his new band, running around with his family, or tracking down fish at his favorite lake, Chris is running his design and engraving business, keeping his creativity engaged. Chris graciously took some time out of his busy schedule to let us get to know him better. Johnny: Since a lot of our readers probably haven’t had a chance to get to know you, tell us who is Chris Cunningham? Chris: I am originally from Forney and still live here today. I’ve been married for almost seven years with two awesome kids. I married into them, but five minutes around all of us, there is no denying they’ve spent way too much time around me! I guess, while not playing music, I could be described as a typical outdoorsmen. I hunt occasionally, fish entirely too much, and the rest of the time I enjoy metal detecting. Nerdy, I know, but fun nonetheless. Johnny: When do you remember being first interested in music? Chris: Growing up both of my parents were singers. Both had spent years in the church choir, and my dad was always a tenor in a quartette. But my interest in music came after their separation. I spent a lot of time by myself and taught myself how to play and write songs. Most of my songs are on the darker side because that’s where they originated for me. I’m not a puppies and unicorns kind of guy. Johnny: What role did your family play in your early musical development? Chris: I remember my mom always driving me, before I could drive, to some random place to meet up with another band and hit the road. She’s never one time told me I couldn’t, and that to me is the biggest role anyone could play with something like music. Johnny: Who were some of your early musical influences? Chris: Very much Cody Canada. The way he writes is so smooth, and I feel like a lot of his songs are written in the same manner as mine: never written down, just freestyled and put together. Johnny: When did you realize you had a knack for writing originals? Chris: I just remember realizing I was extremely good at putting words together. It wasn’t that I ever intended to make a song, songs just came out. And they still do. I will go weeks and

months without words coming to me, and out of the blue, here comes a shiny new song. And it ain’t good until you can make yourself cry. Johnny: How would you describe your music? Chris: I’d have to say primarily Red Dirt country, but it can definitely lean rockish when I’m with a band. Johnny: Where do you draw inspiration from for your original music? Chris: Real world situations. None of my songs are fictional. They are all real. Johnny: Do you remember when and where your first gig was? Chris: Now that I think about it, yes. Probably the Crandall Cotton Gin. It was a restaurant, and they decided to start serving as a live music venue. Now it’s no longer there, and the building was demolished after a fire, which is a travesty, because their chicken fried steak could give people a reason to live. Johnny: Music isn’t the only artistic endeavor in your life; you also have your own design/engraving business. What drew you to that expression? Chris: I worked for a company out of Dallas doing the type of thing I do now. At first it was just a job, but once I started learning to use the laser I got really good at doing small things, until I met a guy they hired to do laser work as well named Richard. Richard has had a bigger influence in my life than he will probably ever realize. He helped me realize my potential to do the kind of work I do, and it really expanded my mind as far as what I was capable of doing. When I decided to go out on my own, he was always there to help, and I can’t thank him enough. If any readers would care to see my nonmusical work, go to facebook.com/c3lasered. Johnny: Do the two ever intermingle? Does your music inspire your design work or vice versa? Chris: Yes! A lot of lyrics come to me when I’m working and just singing random things at the top of my lungs. The guitar is never too far away. (That sounds like a song right there!) Johnny: How many shows do you manage to play in a typical month? Chris: Being married and helping take care of the family I help with, I usually squeeze about two or three good shows in. Booking is tough these days, but I always will play if I am wanted. Johnny: Do you travel much or generally just play local? Chris: There is not much of a music scene in and around Forney. Myself and several others do what we can to change that, but most shows that I would deem memorable occur in Tyler, Longview, Cedar Creek, etc. Johnny: What has been the most interesting memory from your musical journey? Chris: I think the better question is who, and that answer is Colton Mathis. I swear on everything he is Stevie Ray Vaughn reincarnated. No one can touch the amount of artistic ability he has in him. Nobody. Johnny: What upcoming shows do you have on the calendar? Chris: The next show I have is on Saturday, November 4th in Canton at Random Finds inside the First Monday grounds. It is a really good time and always features other musicians who also play in the area. We rotate out and play for about an hour each. I like to call it “fools on stools!” Johnny: What are you listening to when you’re not playing or writing your own stuff? Chris: Lately I’ve really been stuck on Cody Jinks and Cody Johnson. The way they both write really intrigues me, and Cody Jinks writes some songs that hit home hard. It’s hard being a writer listening to music sometimes especially when you can’t hear emotion from the person singing because they don’t feel it because they didn’t write it. Art Moving & Meaningful Art Painted By The People of Tyler: A Second Art Exhibition at Innovation Pipeline By Kelly Gowan I’d like to introduce to you two paintings that hold a ton of feelings. They were created by people in Tyler that just happened to come into my art exhibition that I held at Tyler’s Innovation Pipeline this past October 14th. I find them both to be amazing, inspiring, humbling, and touching. What turned out to be a way for me to show my art, really became an amazing experience where the people of Tyler came out to support Cancer Awareness and the fight to cure all cancers. It was a time for people old and young to walk through and see art and Innovation Pipeline and truly become inspired in so many ways. I absolutely loved watching both kids and adults paint! I told every person to write, draw, splash, to do whatever they felt like on the two canvases we had put out. And the results speak for themselves. Now, I know what happens with me when I paint; I am lost in the moment, consumed with thoughts of color and creativity. It is a way to pour out your emotions and end up with something that will hopefully bring meaning to someone that falls in love with the piece of art. But what was truly amazing for me on that day, was to watch it happen to other people that came and painted instead of me! Not only did children have a good time painting, but I watched grandparents, dad’s, mom’s, friends, and family all come together in moments where all they needed was to paint. Whether they used a brush, spatula, or their hands, for a few moments, they were lost in the ritual of painting. I watched Dad’s that had never thought

they would paint, allow themselves to stop and just enjoy the moment. I had some ladies come in that seemed uninterested in participating, but when I put a brush in their hands and stepped to the side, I returned to see them painting away, mixing colors and letting go. Each time I would step away and come back to see them still there, I’d find them loving every minute of the experience. I know now that not only do I want to be an artist, but I want to work with people young and old to help them find joy in the art of painting. I had two blank canvases out this day. One was 36” x 36” with a black background that was there to allow anyone to simply do what they felt, with any color, any tool, and image. The other one was 30” x 30” that had a pink background and was meant to be done in a circle design of words until the canvas was filled with words that held meaning. We all have our own battles and wins in life, and we all know people affected by diseases like cancer, and to see all these people of Tyler come in and share their stories with and the paintings was a gift. They painted abstract lines, images, flowers, and put words down that had deep meaning to them. I had anticipated needing to add to these pieces when we were done to give the final touches, but they both transformed into utter perfectness representing PEOPLE. I left them just the way they were intended, raw and full of emotion. They have a light protective spray on them now as well as hanging gear, and they are simply amazing. Both are sure to be a topic of conversation and both definitely add love and beauty to any room. Now the fun part; we are going to auction these wonderful pieces. I would like to invite Tyler’s community to be part of this auction process, which continues through November 9th at 8pm, at the second art event at Innovation Pipeline. The opening bid for each piece is at $300. The proceeds from the paintings will be

donated all to Innovation Pipeline and to the American Cancer Society of Tyler. To place a bid contact me or come to Tyler’s Innovation Pipeline next art event on November 9th 5-8pm for featuring new pieces of art to be revealed. Not all artists wanted to share their names, but I would like to thank each and everyone that participated. Here are some of the people that “poured” their hearts into these paintings: Char Salak-Allen, Yaretzi Valenzuela, Lizbeth Rungel, Yessica Rangel, Dorinda Williams, Sandra Nauls-Mast, Trey Caleb, Karan Vema, Bo Gowan, Haley Gowan, Mia Harvey, Ian Whorton, Cory Rhades, Tamar Melien, Sara McCaslin, Mary Willis-Thornbury, Dan Willis – Thornbury, Becky Gowan, Steve Gowan, Felicia Gibson, Allysha Wilson, Giana, Jared Bice, Allison Mear, Marie-Eve Viers, Bria Avila, Olivia Wharton, Espitia Harper Wharton, and David Thomas. A huge thank you to True Vine Brewery and Pokey O’s ice cream for coming out to help us! After this event I found myself looking back and realized that the moral of this story is to always try new things; take time to stop and be

in the moment, listen and care about people’s feelings, and ENJOY ART! It's fun and meaningful, and the process of creating is always exciting. To see more of my art in person, please stop by Wasabi Sushi in Tyler. The new owners graciously allowed me to exhibit my art on every wall in the restaurant. There is a ton to see! More info about my art is available at kellygowan.com, or you can bid by calling (214)641-8788 or kellygowanart@gmail.com.

It is a milestone Hollywood western, a Technicolor marvel with shades of emotional melancholy, tackling the myth of manifest destiny with a man’s horseback quest to find and recover his remaining family. I will always associate this western and horses with my dad. He raised horses throughout his life more often than not. One of my earliest memories is my dad giving me a horse drawing lesson starting with two circles and simple shapes. So, there is an instantaneous wistfulness when I see the exceptional work of local artist Diane Ditzler Frossard. This artist works in a variety of media including oils, watercolor, graphite, and charcoal. She has an extraordinary capacity to capture the essence of natural light on her realistic subjects and allows quick expressive marks and brushstrokes to build and become greater than the sum of their parts. A captured realism created from magically expressive movements leaves the viewer to become the searcher and reap the rewards of taking a double take and examining with a closer eye Frossard’s amazing artwork. “It is gratifying when someone is drawn to one of these paintings, saying it reminds them of something familiar to them,” the artist stated. “As early as I can remember, I have had a passion for two things: art and horses. My father, an avid horseman, introduced me to horses at an early age, and they have always been a part of my life. I also loved drawing or doing anything related to art in my spare time. My mother briefly took an oil painting class. I thought her painting was wonderful, but she felt otherwise and didn’t continue. I asked if I could use her leftover paints and canvas. Although I had no idea what I was doing I had fun creating my first oil painting (of my paint horse) when I was about 10 years old.” Diane Frossard has a degree in geology, not

the typical path for an aspiring full-time artist. She knew she wanted to pursue art, but only painting what interested her and not have the pressure of having to support herself financially so she, and her husband, both worked as geologists. They moved their family to Tyler and established a ranch. Their horses are like family members, pampered, occasionally ridden, and often the subjects in her paintings. “I still have the offspring of one of my childhood horses. He is now 33, and we have grown up together,” Frossard said. Frossard is a Master Signature Member of the Outdoor Painter’s Society, a national plein air (painting outdoor subjects in the open air) group featuring the annual exhibition, Plein Air Southwest. Many of her landscapes are produced specifically for this exhibition. These landscapes are fairly small because they were created on location and had to be executed within a specific time frame before the light changed too much. She says her inspiration usually comes when she is not looking for it: while feeding horses, doing chores, or taking walks. The lighting and time of day are crucial to making a seemingly

mundane subject come alive. Thirteen of Frossard’s landscape paintings were featured at the Tyler Museum of Art in 2015 in the “Reflections of East Texas” exhibition. Artists search for guidance. With the support of her husband, Diane has attended and learned from many different workshops. “Bruce Peil was my mentor and introduced me to plein air painting. Paintings from life are bold, fresh, and immediate small works of art. I highly recommend Bruce Peil who works and teaches out of his renovated barn/studio, in Athens, to anyone looking for a good foundation in landscape painting,” the artist suggested. Artists search for the sublime. “The older I get, the stronger my desire is to take the ordinary things I see in my life and bring forth something unique and poetic from it. The reference is a jumping off point. The challenge is being able to tap into your muse and bring out unique, mystical, and sometimes fleeting images from your mind. For me, it is most often done through the use of light,” Frossard said. Artists search for development. Solitary practice is important and experiencing frustrating failures helps one grow as an artist.

“My breakthroughs and improvements most often come during those independent, alone times. I actually learn the most just from closely studying the work of master artists and staring at paintings in museums and online, how they solved problems, their compositions, brushwork, etc,” Frossard said. Frossard is searching to give back to her community in a variety of ways. “In gratitude for all who have shared their insight and expertise with me, I like to share what I have learned,” she said. Frossard has been volunteering for a couple of art classes at St. Gregory School for 15 years. Other projects include the “Hope” column for the “Pillars of Hope” mural project under the Gentry St. Bridge where homeless and others gather for church. She is currently working on a painting of the Tyler Square, which will be offered through auction at “The Art of Transformation” fundraiser on November 16th. All proceeds from the sale of this painting will benefit the Highway 80 Rescue Mission’s Triumph Village, a new housing project and recovery program for the homeless. Artists search for satisfaction. Diane stated, “Non-artists often don’t realize, unless you are married to one, a lot of hard work, frustration, planning, and years of experience go into a good painting that looks simple and easily executed. It is hard to make it look effortless. It is not all fun, requires problem solving, and can be stressful at times, but tremendously worth it. It never gets any easier, because you are constantly working at a higher level; the more you learn and improve, the more your critical eye is ahead of your current ability. It can be frustrating at times when people don’t understand the value of original art: the expense of materials, canvas, paints, brushes, etc., the time involved, plus the years of experience.” For more info about Diane Frossard go to DianeFrossard.com. Her work can currently be seen at Artist Showplace in Dallas and Valerosa in Tyler. For anyone interested in figure drawing, Tyler has a life drawing group on Thursday evenings 6-9pm for $20 at Brick Street Studios, 1000 Augusta hosted by Russell Belue. TMA Casts Spotlight on Pop Art Icon with “Andy Warhol with Screen Prints & Snapshots” One of the most highly anticipated

exhibitions in recent years comes to the Tyler Museum of Art with “Andy Warhol: Screen Prints & Snapshots,” open to the public through January 7th, 2018 at the TMA, 1300 S. Mahon Ave. on the Tyler Junior College main campus. General exhibition admission is $6 for adults and $4 for seniors. Admission is free for TMA members, students, children under 12, Tyler Junior College faculty/ staff, and City of Tyler employees. The exhibition, organized by the TMA and curated by Caleb Bell, features close to 40 works by the late Pop Art icon, including a series of Warhol’s signature silkscreen prints drawn from the Cochran Collection of LaGrange, Ga., and a collection of his celebritycentric Polaroid photographs from the Meadows Museum of American Art at Centenary College of Louisiana. “Screen Prints & Snapshots” showcases several distinct bodies of work from the later career of Warhol, widely recognized as the father of the Pop Art movement and known for his renderings of Campbell’s Soup cans, Brillo boxes, and the “cult of celebrity” that surrounded his Manhattan studio, The Factory. Highlights of “Screen Prints & Snapshots” include the silkscreen prints from the 1986 Cowboys and Indians he completed shortly before his death, spotlighting such iconic subjects as John Wayne, Teddy Roosevelt, and Geronimo; his 1981 Myths series, featuring touchstones of American pop culture including Mickey Mouse, Howdy Doody, and Superman; and selections from his “Flash,” Flowers and Television series. Rounding out the exhibition are a selection of Polaroids and silver gelatin prints, shot from 1958 until Warhol’s 1987 death and offering insight into his intimate relationship with his celebrity friends – Dolly Parton, Jack Nicklaus, and Pia Zadora among them. Support for the exhibition is provided by Community Partner Sponsor Southside Bank and Media Sponsor Tyler Today Magazine. Special events in connection with “Screen Prints & Snapshots” include free First Fridays featuring guided exhibition tours at 11am November 3rd, December 1st, and January 5th and Family Days 2-4pm November 11th and December 9th. Middle School Day of the Dead Art Exhibition The Tyler Museum of Art continues its commitment to showcasing the region’s diversity with its eighth annual Middle School Day of the Dead Art Exhibition, open to the public Sunday, October 29th-November 5th. Admission is free. The exhibition features artwork in the TMA’s Education Gallery and lobby by sixththrough eighth-graders from Tyler and the surrounding area, representing middle schools including Moore from Tyler Independent School District, as well as All-Saints Episcopal School, Bishop T.K. Gorman Regional Catholic School, Brook Hill School, Cumberland Academy, Frankston Middle School, Holloway 6th Grade, and Whitehouse Junior High. Close to 300 students working across a broad range of media are expected to participate. The community is invited to join the Museum from 2-4pm Sunday, October 29th for an artists’ reception and celebration of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), the traditional Mexican holiday honoring memories of family and friends. The reception will include

traditional food and art activities related to the holiday. Admission is free, but reservations are encouraged. Call (903)595-1001 to RSVP. To coincide with the Day of the Dead celebration, an installation of selected pieces of Mexican folk art from the TMA’s Laura and Dan Boeckman Collection also will be on display through November 5th in the Museum lobby. Landscapes of Fort Worth’s Daniel Blagg in Spotlight with New TMA Exhibition “Roadside Distractions” The raw realities of urban landscapes marked by the passage of time as seen by one of Texas’ most prolific contemporary artists are the focus of the Tyler Museum of Art’s next major exhibition, “Roadside Distractions: Works by Daniel Blagg,” on exhibit through November 26th at the TMA, 1300 S. Mahon Ave. on the Tyler Junior College main campus. Admission is free. Organized by the TMA, Roadside Distractions showcases 25 of Blagg’s urban realist paintings that depict a wide variety of decaying objects along roads, including old signs and abandoned buildings – with one notable exception, and a subject that will be familiar to Tyler residents: the Sky Vue Drive-In, a venue that plays first-run films but often is considered something of an anachronism as one of only 17 operational drive-in theaters remaining in Texas. All works in the exhibition are recent, including a watercolor piece the artist completed only weeks ago and will be shown to the public for the first time. Support for Roadside Distractions is provided by Collectors’ Circle-Platinum sponsor The Byars Foundation. Special Events Special events include guided First Friday Tours at 11am November 3rd and Family Days 2-4pm Saturday, November 11th. Upcoming Exhibits December 10th-February 25th, 2018 “Contemporary Texas II: Selections From The Permanent Collection” - Contemporary Texas II provides a rare opportunity to view some of the most celebrated works from the TMA’s Permanent Collection together in a single exhibition, offering a glimpse into the Museum’s rich history and its indelible place in the Texas art scene over the past few decades.
