Dinner on the Bricks in Downtown Tyler Held November 10th on the historic and beloved Brick streets in Downtown Tyler, you can have an elegant Saturday Nov. 10th, 2018 evening at Downtown Tyler, Texas 5-8pm an inaugural Dinner on the Bricks, held in All proceeds will go towards a revitalization grant for Downtown property owners. Downtown Tyler, 5-8pm. The historic red bricks are cherished by residents and visitors to the Rose City alike. The iconic brick streets that encompass almost 14 city miles were put in to help promote commerce downtown, and they still do, primarily through tourism these days. When they were installed at the turn of the century, it was because downtown vendors complained their goods were dirty in the summer because of dust kicked up from the dirt roads. Wet roads in the winter made transporting goods from the rail lines to the stores downtown difficult, so Tyler’s brick streets - the first paved roads in the city - were installed to help promote business Downtown. And to this day, the red brick streets are known as a Tyler favorite. The brick street district is made of roughly 12.6 million bricks and encompasses 13.8 miles in the oldest portions of Tyler. Downtown around the square these beloved red bricks will come alive as you are given a unique opportunity to experience history close up and personal at an elegant night of fine food, live jazz, and exquisite drinks. Just picture this, at Dinner on the Bricks, you can dine at elegantly dressed long tables directly on the red bricks all while enjoying a four-course chef-prepared dinner by Rick’s on the Square including shrimp cocktail, Caesar salad, filet mignon with roasted Rosemary potatoes and vegetables, plus Rick’s famous Key-Lime Pie. Beer and Pelle Legna Vineyards wine pairings will take place as well along with live music performed by the UT Tyler Jazz Band. Tickets are $100 and available at eventguruonline.ticketspice.com/downtown-tyler-dinneron-the-bricks or call (903)593-6905. In case of bad weather, this event will be moved inside Rick’s on the Square. All proceeds will go towards a revitalization grant for Downtown property owners.

Matthew Marcus McDaniel:
Feel Free To Express Yourself By Johnny Griffith
Elvis Returns! “Who could beat the King of Rock and Roll with his song,
‘Suspicious Minds?’ Not many. But there is one man who comes close.” — Travis Powell. East Texas is in luck because this smooth impersonator will perform songs from Elvis’ 1968 comeback special and 1970s concert years at 7pm on January 12th in Gilmer and January 13th in Palestine. This 34-year-old North Carolina native has traveled the nation as an Elvis impersonator for years. With his whiskey-smooth vocals and “Well, thank ya, thank ya very much” lines, most people can’t tell the difference. In the two-part act, Powell dons a svelte, playful black leatherclad outfit as Elvis wore in the ‘68 comeback. Powell will also be seen wearing the iconic Las Vegas-era white jumpsuit and singing songs like “American Trilogy” and “If I Can Dream.” Houston promoter Steve Fountain has been producing Elvis tribute shows for 10 years and said Powell is one of the best. “He (Powell) takes you back in time,” Fountain said. “It’s as if you are watching the real Elvis in Vegas. He is amazing.” Powell has won many Elvis tribute contests, including the Potawatomi Hotel & Casino’s “A Tribute to the King” competition in January, which put $25,000 in prize money in that jeweled jumpsuit pocket of his. Powell’s love of Elvis started when he was four. “I have a VHS tape of myself in my grandparent’s living room in a jumpsuit singing Elvis songs,” Powell said. “I just wanted to be Elvis. He was cool to me and had an amazing voice.” Though the avid Elvis fan never got to meet his hero, Powell believes Elvis was a “great guy.” “One of the things that don’t get mentioned much about Elvis is how he helped others,” Powell said. “You can go to Greystone and see a lot of the different checks he wrote to people and different organizations. We all have our flaws, but deep down I think he was just a great guy who cared about people.” Besides having a big heart, Powell said Elvis had “it.” “He had charisma, what you’d call ‘it’, in the entertainment business,” Powell said. “He could walk on stage and just smile and people loved him. I wanted to be Elvis.” If someone had told Powell at four years old that he would be performing as the greatest entertainer of all time, he’d think they were crazy. “Second of all, I’d be like, ‘Yes!’” Powell said. “I would be very happy. And I am. I get to live the dream every day and go to work happy. I don’t know too many people in this world that enjoy everything about their job. I’m very blessed.” Powell invited the community to attend this two-hour show for “a great night of good, clean fun.” Special guest 14-year-old rising Elvis tribute artist Moses Snow will open the show. VIP tickets cost $40 and reserved tickets cost $30 or $20. To purchase tickets, contact (832)312-0074 or email stevemdxelvis@ gmail.com. For more info visit etatravispowell.com.

Sometimes you just have to throw caution to the wind and go with what you feel. That’s the approach local East Texan Matthew McDaniel takes when it comes to writing his music. After spending a lifetime immersed in music, McDaniel has learned to let the music lead and be an expression of what he’s feeling in the time and the place it decides to flow. A frequent stage presence around the area, Matthew wears a couple of different hats; He has a consistent and dynamic solo show, which we’ll focus on today, and he sits in as lead singer for a local band as well. I managed to get Matthew to take a break and so that we could get to know him and his work a little better. Johnny: When were you first drawn to music? Matthew: My first memory and comprehension of my existence have music. I learned to stand and walk by pulling myself up on the shelving unit that held my family’s stereo system. I was bouncing and dancing to the music of Michael Jackson and Earth Wind & Fire from LPs mostly. Johnny: What were some of your influences early on that shaped your musical direction? Matthew: I could list dozens but for time’s sake, when I was in my last year of college at the University of Texas in Austin, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Reckless Kelly and two dozen more were hot. They got me into wanting to play and write music. Not too long after beginning to play an instrument and perform my rock ’n roll influences from The Black Crowes to Tom Petty started to come out in my writing. From there, I dove headfirst into The Doors, Rolling Stones, Little Feat, Ben Harper, and Aerosmith. I have written since I was young starting at around 7 or 8, writing about what I know, how I felt, places I had traveled (I traveled with my family across the country in the summers starting at the age of 7). I had many influences outside of music like books, TV, films, art, travel, and relationships. The full spectrum of my life added to my writing from the time I was young until this day. Johnny: How would you describe your music now and how has it evolved over the years? Matthew: I like to think of my music as a free space, ‘Music that you can feel’. I am sure people have, and will always have, their own opinions about what it is or should be labeled as. I don’t write any song with an intention other than the way I feel about it when I am writing it. Even then, it may not end up sounding like what I thought especially after I play it a thousand times. It can become something completely different when I record it. I would say as far as an evolutionary process, I started with three chords and the true philosophy because of the music that launched me and the music I was around, I think simplicity is a huge stepping stone for many, if not most. Now I like to start with a melody or riff or a lyrical concept and build from there. Sometimes I still end with a simple result that can sometimes become very complex. What it all boils down to is what I feel from the song. Having no agenda has been the best policy for me in recent years. Johnny: Are you primarily a solo act or do you collaborate with other musicians regularly? Matthew: I have two main projects in my life: my solo acoustic act of Matthew Marcus McDaniel, and my “Rock & Roll” band Thieves of Sunrise. When writing over the years, I have collaborated with other writers and performers but it is usually for a commissioned project or for fun with friends. The songs that I produce as a representation of myself or band are written by myself and musically with any bandmates I may have at the time. In my early years, I collaborated a few times with friends mostly and it was a good way to get started.
Johnny: How much original music do you try to work into a set? Matthew: That is usually dependent on where I am playing and what project I am performing with. A Thieves of Sunrise show will be 95-100% original material depending on the length of the show. My Matthew Marcus McDaniel shows right now are about 50-60% original material unless a venue requests that I play mostly covers. Some nights you have to pay the bills and the venue is the boss. On nights where the shows are short or it is a listening room or showcase, that audience will get 100% original show. I also, at times, try not to play a lot of Thieves of Sunrise. I have lots of material and if I am constantly using a hefty portion of our catalog, it feels like I am not doing myself justice as far as my other songs and differentiating my solo act from the band. I do have a lot of crossover material with the band though and I play those nightly. This also lends itself to making sure that I stay on top of writing material strictly for myself and different from my other endeavors. Johnny: Do you typically play in the immediate vicinity or do you get the opportunity to travel? Matthew: Most of my solo work in a given month will keep me in Texas and Eastern Oklahoma. In the past, I have rarely traveled outside of Texas for my solo work, but now my region has spread to include Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, New Mexico, and Colorado. I will be traveling further as a solo act in the future and have been venturing out to Oregon and Washington in recent months. Johnny: What are some of the challenges of balancing the passion for music with the responsibilities of being an “adult?” Matthew: I think at some point if you are not one of the chosen few to hit the big time in your early years you must begin to look at what you do as a business. It is the only way to stay afloat if you want to be a full-time musician. You will also most likely have to diversify your skill set. Plus, learn to save money no matter how little you might be making. It is definitely constant work. That is where the trouble comes in. In your question lies some of the answers - you have to learn balance. There is no silver bullet. Find a schedule that works for you and keep working, the time you allow yourself to write and the time you are performing are your time for passion so take full advantage and indulge, and soak up every possible second of it. Johnny: What are some of your best memories on stage? Offstage? Matthew: The best memories are when you know that you have gotten through to your audience whether or not they were there for you or you had to win them. Its when people understand what you do and why you are doing it. I have always approached music from the standpoint of helping others, giving people the most positive and enriching experience possible. I write the songs from what I gather from the universe and the world around me and what I put out is for others. When I see people engaged and happy that is the best. The rest of what may or may not happen on stage is a result of the people. Offstage is about travel, seeing new places, eating different food, life experience. Meeting fans and hearing how the music made them feel, hearing about their lives, that, just like on stage, is a big one. Johnny: What have you been most proud of in your musical career to this point? Matthew: That I have been able to sustain essentially as an independent and full-time musician for almost my entire career. I am still out here, still moving, and I am still full of music. Also, the fact I have never had to sacrifice my art or bend to what others thought might be a more popular route. The people I have met, the places I have been, and all of the music I have made are what keeps me going. You won’t hear a lot of my music on the radio and you probably won’t see me walking across too many stages to accept awards but I will keep making music for the people and life will take care of the rest. Johnny: What do you have in store for the rest of 2018 and looking forward to 2019? Matthew: For the rest of 2018 I am almost booked up completely. I’m working on solidifying a short tour up to the Rocky Mountains in December. Thieves of Sunrise has a new album that has recently come out called “Let the Truth Speak.” I am really excited about that. Also in December, I am considering beginning work on a new solo Matthew Marcus McDaniel album since it’s been a while since I put one of those out. In 2019, Thieves of Sunrise will be back in full swing, so that will take a great deal of my time. Last, but not least, I am hoping to start on two new projects based out on the West Coast / Pacific Northwest, a west coast style psychedelic project and an acoustic folk duo. Luke LaPrade: A Little Too Country By Johnny Griffith There is a debate among music enthusiasts these days about what is “real” Country music, especially when you hear some of what is offered on mainstream radio as “Country” music. One listen to Grand Saline native singer/songwriter Luke LaPrade and it’s quickly obvious he has found his calling in authentic Country music. However, at one point in his life, LaPrade was too country for his own good. A 2015 graduate of Grand Saline ISD, Luke grew up working on his parents’ farm and started playing music around age 15 but had been a huge fan of 90’s rock for as long as he could remember. Growing up listening to and singing along with bands like The Offspring, Weezer, and Blink 182, LaPrade had visions of becoming a singer in a rock & roll band...that is until he recorded himself singing a Weezer song into a phone, played it back, and promptly decided he was a bit too country to sing in a rock band. Luckily for the rest of us, he kept singing and eventually developed a knack for writing raw, authentic, and emotional music that he sings on stages around the area. We caught up to him in between gigs recently to get to know Luke better. Johnny: When did you decide to take music past the hobby level and try to make it more? Luke: About age 17 I started playing for my friends at parties then somewhere around 18 or 19 years old, I got my first gig at Applebee’s in Canton and I’ve been booking gigs ever since Johnny: Are you primarily playing solo gigs or do you work with a band? Luke: At this point in time I primarily play solo, but I have considered putting a band together in the past so it’s a possibility for the future. Johnny: Your original music feels like it’s a little Jason Boland, a little Dwight Yoakam, and a little Waylon. How would you describe it and how did your style evolve?
Luke: That’s a pretty cool description. Honestly, I’d say its a mix of some William Clarke Green, some Turnpike Troubadours, and a touch of old-timey twang here and there. My music has evolved tremendously being that at first I wanted to be a rock star and perform music like Weezer, Blink 182, and stuff like that. Over the years the music I listen to has shaped my style. I’m a huge Texas Country fan, but my style seems to be drifting into the Americana genre in my opinion. I’d call it a blend of Texas Country, Americana, and Southern Rock. The last 3 or 4 years I’ve been a student of John Defoore and his teachings have completely changed my outlook on songwriting. John has helped shape my music significantly. Johnny: With all the current variations of “Country” music out right now, where do you see your style fitting in and how has the response been so far? Luke: I think with my music really kind of being a blend of a few different genres, it’s easy for people to find something they like in it. Since the “Blue” album dropped last month, I’ve had a great response. People seem to like “Gotta Get Away” and “Lay It All On Me” the most. I’m fortunate to have a very supportive fan group. Johnny: About how many shows a month are you currently playing? Luke: I’m lucky in that I’m consistently playing eight or more shows a month right now. Johnny: What have some of the biggest challenges been? Luke: Definitely booking. I hassle as many places as possible and stay on them till I get an answer but it can be miserable and tedious. I also travel long distances for shows and the tank I’m driving currently is horrible on gas mileage. Johnny: What has been your support base through the journey? Luke: I have been very blessed with an amazing group of family and friends - some people that have been here from day one. Some family and friends come long distances to catch my shows. They encourage me to keep going and they brag on my tunes. Every time I debut a new tune, they just eat it up. I don’t know what I’d do without them.
I have to give a big shout out to “he gone.” I love you guys and gals. Additionally, I’ve got the most supportive woman a musician can get. She has always pushed me to keep doing what I love. I don’t know how she does all the late nights with me but I am blessed. My dad, grandmother, grandpa, mother, and stepdad have all played huge roles in my music and the success I have had so far. I absolutely couldn’t do it without them. Johnny: What has been your most memorable gig to date? Luke: That’s a tough one as I’ve played so many gigs the last couple years that they tend to blur. I’ve played with Katie Lynn, I’ve opened for Zane Williams and I’ve played numerous private events - at one of which I met Chance Peña. He was a very cool cat and we wrote “Lay It All On Me” together then he did work on my album. It really is hard to pick one show. They are all fantastic. Johnny: What’s your proudest accomplishment so far in your career as a musician? Luke: Finally releasing my first album “Blue” which is available on iTunes, Spotify, Pandora, Amazon Music, YouTube Music, and many more. I am very proud of this album and hope everyone finds something for themselves in my lyrics. Johnny: What’s your favorite cover song you do that nobody else is doing? What’s your favorite original right now? Luke: My favorite cover tune I’m doing is a hard split between “Last Kiss” by Wayne Cochran and famously covered by Pearl Jam, and “Maria” by Zane Williams. My favorite original is “Gotta Get Away.” I wrote that song about someone very dear to me and the perception I had of what was going on. Johnny: What’s on the horizon in 2019? Luke: It’s hard to tell. I’m hoping to release some new music and, as always, I’m booking every show I can get. I might possibly look into getting a band. You never know what will happen, but I’ll certainly hope for 2019 to be as great as 2018 has been. For more info and upcoming shows, follow Luke LaPrade online at facebook.com/ LukeLaPradeMusic.

Food Oh Look, More New Place To Eat in Tyler! A few new restaurants have popped up in
Tyler. Here’s the details:
Manny’s Tex-Mex Cafe Manny’s Tex-Mex Cafe, located at 1433 S. Beckham Ave. in Tyler is something that many Tylerites have been waiting for - an ElCharro’s in Midtown! They are now open offering all the menu favorites and some new spins on the menu like a nice Vegetarian section. From those classics like Tony’s Tacos, chicken fried steak, Cheese Enchiladas, tamales, and the favorite #2 (pork tamales smothered in chili and one cheese and onion enchilada smothered with chili and cheese) and all the way down to the imfamous orange sauce - Manny’s has got you covered. One of our favorites is the Steak Rellena. It is a good size plate of red onion, mushrooms, and poblano peppers sautéed in a rich garlic butter sauce and wine, add some Monterey Jack cheese, then stuffed it all in a Pechuga (chicken breast) or Angus steak. As always, it is served with rice, whole beans, pico de gallo, and sliced avocado. The Mar & Tierra also stands out - a halforder of carne asada and six sautéed shrimp, served with rice, beans, and pico de gallo. The “Vegan Specials (which are mostly vegetarian instead of vegan) features grilled portobella quesadillas, black bean spinach wrap, Loaded Vegan Nachos, Vegan Relleno, and of particular interest, the Avocado Enchiladas. Manny’s famous frozen margaritas carry on the family tradition as well as the Sangria Maragaritas. The bar also features local beers from ETX Brewing as well as other class favorites. Manny’s feels like the old ElCharro’s #1 and on a Friday night, you are guaranteed to see lots of people looking around and waving at friends they knew from the good old days. Mama’s Restaurant #2 Mama’s Restaurant #2 has opened at 7484 S. Broadway Ave. in Tyler and carries on the tradition of Mama’s on Fifth Street. The second location for this very popular breakfast, lunch, and dinner joint offer the same food, good service, wonderful prices, and big portions of food always
being served. This mom and pop style restaurant is what you are looking for for made fresh from scratch food. A favorite is the huge serving of pancakes they are freshly made and super tasty. Original, pigs (sausage links wrapped in buttermilk pancakes), fruit, chocolate chip, banana nut, and strawberry banana pancakes are offered. Omelets are huge and served overflowing with toppings both inside and oozing out the sides. Steak, meat lovers, garden, Joe’s (ham, peppers, onion, and salsa), and chicken fajita omelets are offered. You can also “build your own.” Lunch and dinner menus are varied and have something for everyone. From sandwiches to chicken fried steak to pot roast and tilapia, there is something for everyone. A favorite is the Patty Melt piled high with tons of grilled onions and served on classic rye bread. Senior specials are offered with smaller portions and lower prices. Mama’s is open seven days a week in both locations. Poké Bop Poké Bop, located at 2251 Three Lakes Pkwy., #107 in Tyler just opened and it’s already a hit. What is a poké bop? It is fast fresh and delicious deconstructed sushi served either in a bowl, taco, or “pokeritto!” Poké is a Hawaiian specialty that is quickly spreading across the U.S. Traditional poké (pronounced “po-kay”) is typically cubed, fresh, raw seafood - usually tuna, salmon or crab or other sea fare proteins - mixed with numerous healthy ingredients just like the surfing culture would do after a great day of riding the waves! Poké Bop’s chef and partner Tommy Hwang is a certified sushi chef with 27 years of experience and he’s created a menu of traditional poké fare that is fresh, beautiful and healthy, available in bowl, rolls, and tacos. At Poké Bop, diners experience Hawaiian poké with a Japanese fusion flare resulting in the Supreme Beach Cuisine. Top It Off Pizza Top It Off Pizza, located at 1700 SSE, TX-323 Loop #108 in Tyler, is now open. This New York pizza place has brought true New York pizza to Tyler - complete with a friendly New Yorker accent that brightens the experience and makes you feel like you just stepped off of Time Square. The pizzas are made fresh and served as dine-in or take out. You can get a pie in 12” with as many toppings as you desire. You can’t beat the price for the quality of the ingredient and how good the pizza is. After 5pm, “Texas Sized Pies” are offered in 18.” Be sure to try the garlic knots - they are to die for and are almost as good as the handmade cannolis!

Art
Inside the Artist’s Studio:
And so become yourself...Lifelong Learning:
Clara Hicks and Barry Jacobs By Derrick White
A definition of lifelong learning is to continuously expand one’s knowledge and skills from one’s life events. Fine arts is the perfect example of staying healthy - mentally, emotionally, and physically. Lifelong learning advances human development and is essential for people to be actively involved in life. TJC offers to let members of our community audit (enroll and participate without receiving college credit) many classes. Studio art classes are where many people seeking personal enrichment, find a place to belong. Residents residing inside TJC’s taxing district over the age of 65 may be eligible to audit courses tuition-free. It is great for a creative studio environment to have students ranging from 19 to 90. These students discuss and exchange ideas, work socially, and volunteer collectively. With a range in age like this, it is always interesting to see different approaches to ideas and materials. Years ago, while on a field trip with my school class, I asked the group the time of day and only one student looked at her wristwatch. The lone student not staring at a smartphone was Clara Hicks. Clara repeated art classes at TJC for over a decade for the experiences, friendships, lifelong learning, and personal development. She first attended TJC in the late 1960’s. She had an exhibition of her art spanning over 42 years of work shown in the Jenkins Hall art department hallway gallery in March of 2009. “When I first took a painting class I did not know which end of the brush to hold,” states Clara, a Tyler resident and accomplished artist in landscape, portrait, and still-life painting as well as weaving and ceramics. “Classes at TJC’s art department are very uplifting. I am inspired by other students who focus on their work with a positive mental attitude. The faculty has set the bar high so students may achieve both their short and long-term goals. I see controlled attention and a lot of enthusiasm,” states non-traditional art student Barry Jacobs. Mr. Jacobs has been repeating TJC art classes for several years. “With no formal experience of art education, I just took on projects. At the Electronics Machine Accounting College in Chicago in 1964, using punch card computer programming, my first piece of art was an image of President John F. Kennedy made from many x’s, o’s, and dashes. I was 21,” remembers Barry. He first took an art class at TJC in 2009 and has explored painting, drawing, design, printmaking and screen-printing, ceramics, sculpture, and art appreciation. Barry has won numerous awards for his artwork including several different place ribbons from the recent East Texas State Fair. Barry’s ceramic tile mosaic artwork was selected to be included in the 2018 Bell Tower Arts Journal of TJC student work (including paintings, drawings, sculptures, photography, poetry, and short stories). Jacobs works with acrylic, watercolor, charcoal, pastels, and graphite. He has sculpted in concrete, wood, clay, as well as fiberglass. Barry also won the art club’s 2017 Halloween costume contest with his reconstructed old cancer treatment radiation mask. Barry became interested in art from a previous job working for R.L. Polk City Directory. He recalls, “The job was to sell directories to businesses and get them to advertise. I would make sketches which included logos, pictures, business descriptions, and phone numbers.” Barry has also been practicing Tai-Chi for 15 years in order to get more cardiovascular exercise. “Over the past two years, I have also included Kung-Fu. The benefits have exceeded everything I was expecting,” says Barry. He feels taking studio art classes connects him to his family stating, “My father’s sister, Lilly, was an artist and my sister, Joyce Lynn had an art master’s degree and enjoyed creating still-lifes and portraits in oil.” Barry recommends, “Art club is a time where one can break away from routine; receive positive feedback, information about what is happening in the arts community, volunteer opportunities, competitions, and personal stories from professors on lessons in life as they experience it.” Time is almost always a frustration when it comes to the creative process. “I make mistakes when I rush to finish. I sometimes come in after class to do additional work. I also learn from defeat and self-discipline.” Barry Jacobs works in what may be classified as a folk/fine art style. Folk art will sometimes have a freshness and naiveté in its formal composition. Folk art is generally (though not always) self-taught or accomplished with nominal instruction. 20 • EGuideMagazine.com
The difference between fine and folk art is essentially traditional, rather than educational. Folk artists may have a variety of different styles and work in a wide range of media. The results are unique, creative, and distinctive for each individual artist. Barry joined the Navy in 1961 and served as a machinist mate on the Destroyer USS Witek. He was not deployed to Vietnam but did serve in the Cuban Missile Crisis after the Bay of Pigs invasion. Jacobs recalls, “We were to intercept any ship carrying missiles to Cuba and we did just that and also protect the aircraft carriers if they were attacked.” After the Navy, Barry Jacobs went to computer school, worked in construction, as a floor covering contractor, and insurance salesman. Currently, away from the art studios, Barry spends his time volunteering at Christus Mother Frances Hospital making arts and crafts for oncology patients, phones potential donors at Urology Tyler, volunteers at Texans Against Crime, is a neighborhood crime watch captain, and previously conducted craft projects and patient contact for 13 years at ETMC. You can see the benefit of having an individual like this in one’s classroom and sharing their experiences and ideas with an 18-year-old kid.

Perspective” will continue this month and November 10th, 1-3pm, there will be a rescheduled Opening Reception for the exhibit. Each exhibit opens with a Saturday evening reception that features music, an opportunity to meet the artists, refreshments, and more. The Opening Receptions are free and open to the public. For more info go to downtowntylerarts.com, call (903)593-6905, or follow the Downtown Tyler Facebook Page. 22 • EGuideMagazine.com
bending magic and side-splitting comedy collide as magician Grant Freeman brings his unique show full of surprises to Cherokee Civic Theatre, located at 157 W. Fifth St., a block off the courthouse square in beautiful downtown Rusk. Don’t miss the magic, storytelling, and wonder brought to you by one of the most compelling entertainers of his generation. Perfect for the whole family! The worst image magician, Grant Freeman, can conjure in his mind is the cheesy magician making flagrantly-colored handkerchiefs spew out of bright wooden boxes, stuffing rabbits into hats, and torturing innocent women for no apparent reason. Grant has striven in his extensive work as a magician to create modern and out-of-the-colored-box performances that propel the ancient art of conjuring into the new millennium. The most popular question Grant receives,
after “How in the world…?!” is “How did you get started in magic?” In the seventh grade, Grant began learning magic from local professional magicians, and was then able to meet and learn from some of the best and most experienced magicians in the world. Grant quickly became a well-known name among magicians as a rising performer, and television appearances and professional bookings for a wide variety of performances soon followed. Performing in large-scale events, and a substantial amount of charity shows, Grant continues to create strong material packed with stunning magic and comedy for the audience of today. So get ready for this exciting, captivating show that is fun for the whole family. This will not be one to miss! For tickets go to cherokeetheatre.net or Grant-Freeman.com.

Books Cozy Up With A Book By Gini Rainey The Waiting Room by Emily Bleeke Written by the author of “When I’m Gone,” this book has just as much suspense, mystery, and unanswered questions that held my attention to the turn of the last page. It seems that since the death of her husband, that coincided with the beginning of her post-partum depression following the birth of their daughter, Veronica has been unable to touch, hold, or work as an illustrator. Enlisting the help of her mother to care for the baby, Veronica’s life is a spiral of misery. When someone breaks into her house and she finds disturbing sketches in her studio, and the eventual kidnapping of her daughter, Veronica enlists the help of local authorities to find the baby. When she feels no one is trying to help her, she begins a search of her own for her missing baby. What Bleeke has created here is a story filled with as much suspense and twisted turns as “Gone Girl” and “When I’m Gone,” both psychological thrillers of the first class. With skillful character building, she has created characters that just scream believability and situations that are easy for the reader to feel like they are involved, too, feeling the angst and pain of all involved. While this book is mainly intended to be a fiction read, it also addresses the very serious subject of post-partum depression and how deep and crippling it can be. Without a doubt, Bleeke will suck you in and keep you there until the very end. Just because you think you’ve got the whole plot AND ending figured out, don’t be surprised when you turn that last page and discover the sad and truth behind the disappearance of the baby. Get into your comfy chair and settle in for one crazy ride. Rating: 5 of 5, Copyright 2018 –Lake Union Publishing
