The bad news is that the world is ending yet again in one of the final summer films this year. The upside is that it’s from the creative team behind “Shaun of the Dead” and the spectacularly funny “Hot Fuzz.” Director Edgar Wright, alongside screenwriting pal Simon Peg, lends his witty, spooflike material to robots this time. Having already cinematically roasted zombies and cop flicks, robots are being served in their third collaboration. Unfortunately for us, this is the least funny of the three films (four if you count “Paul,” which Wright wasn’t involved in). In the 1990’s a group of five friends were legends among the sleepy town of Newton Haven, but they failed to complete The Golden Mile challenge where they drink a pint of beer at 12 different bars. Now facing their 40’s and all at different success levels in their lives except for the ring leader Gary (Pegg), they have gotten back together against their better judgment and out of pity for their unchanged leader. However, the town doesn’t seem to remember them and everything looks a bit sanitized. They soon realize that the entire town has been turned into robots, but that doesn’t detour Gary from his only lifelong goal of completing The Golden Mile. They call it the Cornetto trilogy due to the fact that a Cornetto candy wrapper has appeared in all three films. What made “Hot Fuzz” so funny and intelligent isn’t as apparent here. The focus on the love of film isn’t as apparent with the homages, and the jokes are worthy of only a snicker instead of a full blown laugh. It’s still clever for the most part and, as usual, has something very derogatory to say about society and the stupidity of humans, which is entertaining on its own. According to Wright and Pegg, this completes the trilogy for the team. The underlying theme of the film, which gets fairly ridiculous midway through, is that some people cling to the past so much that they are unable to move on, in this case into adulthood for Gary. There are a handful of great lines here, including “It’s not an invasion, it’s a merger,” as Basil (David Bradley) explains to the bar hoppers. Gary, when making fun of Andrew (Frost), who doesn’t drink alcohol any longer and only orders water, refers to it as “drinking rain.” The battle scenes and the speeches seem to go on forever without a defiant punch line or acceleration in plot. The script certainly has its low points as it trickles towards an even more lackluster ending. Final Thought – The Edgar Wright trilogy wobbles to a disappointing finish.
It’s interesting to look at director David Lowery’s filmography, which showcases his talents in film editing, sound department, visual effects, and even acting. Many compared Lowery’s first widely seen feature “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints” to a Terrence Malick film, and it isn’t just because they film in Texas. Lowery’s work is very visually focused, but I found his method of storytelling much more fluid and purposeful than Malick’s. I found Lowery’s appreciation for capturing “the scene” with beautiful flooding cinematography, a haunting score, and impending tension to mirror the style of Andrew Dominik’s “The Assassination of Jesse James” by the Coward Robert Ford, also starring Casey Affleck. Their love for each other brought them together and now it will tear them apart. Bob Muldoon (Affleck) throws down the weapon and turns himself in to the police after a robbery goes bad. With Ruth (Mara) by his side and a dead best friend on the floor of an old barn, Bob vows to return to take care of her and their unborn child. After four years of letters, the inability to express her feelings on motherhood, and the anticipation for them to reunite, Ruth appears to have moved on until word reaches that Bob has escaped prison. Local cop Patrick Wheeler (Foster), who was shot during the arrest four years ago, sees a chance to be the man Ruth desperately wants. Bradford Young’s cinematography is the most interesting and unique aspect of the film (besides the stunning poster) not only because it is beautiful, but also because it tells the story more than dialogue, plot, and sound. The editing also plays a powerful role in the slow development of the story that simultaneously takes its time, but never wastes it. A big admirer of Affleck’s work, this is not his strongest performance and it rings a little too close to his Robert “Bob” Ford role. Mara continues to prove that she really did deserve that best actress nomination for “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” choosing challenging and diverse roles to sharpen her talent. Honestly, the most impressive performance here is Foster (“3:10 To Yuma,” “The Messenger”) in one of his most sensitive performances yet. Typically cast as the aggressor, Foster, like Mara and Affleck, play this role with looks, stares, and very loud unspoken dialogue. This semi-western might be set in the 1970’s but Lowery makes Meridian, Texas look and feel like a dusty old saloon town. There isn’t much action here because this is a film about yearning to speak the words you can never say. In it’s own way, it’s a romantic film set among impossible circumstance and Lowery has written it purposely to play out visually. Final Thought – Lacks emotion but looks stunning anyway.
Now Showing...
“Elysium” (Grade B-, Rated R; Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley) - A lot has changed in the year 2154, the “1%” now live on a floating manmade space station called Elysium. There is no sickness, no crime or poverty; that is reserved for those still on Earth, who are working slaves to the rich and powerful. In charge of Elysium’s national security, Chief Delacourt (Foster) is of a mind to shoot first and asked questions later when unauthorized vessels enter the forbidden airspace. Max (Damon) has grown up in poverty on the dirty streets of Los Angeles. When an injury at work infects him with radiation, he agrees to take on the task of changing the elite system and making the paradise in the sky available to everyone. I was surprised that Blomkamp, for all his creative genius, followed such predictable gender stereotypes. This year alone, we have already watched Will Smith (and son) help save the world in “After Earth,” Tom
Cruise in “Oblivion,” Henry Cavel in “Man of Steel” and so on. Now, Matt Damon is faced with doing the same, and I wonder if it would not have been more creative, interesting, and challenging to have Foster and Damon switch roles. Blomkamp’s script is smart in making Max somewhat selfish to want to live, but in the flashbacks we see his positive influence leading him towards empathy. Final Thought – Blomkamp is obviously more creative when abiding by the notion ‘less is more.’ “Jobs” (Grade C, Rated PG-13; Ashton Kutcher, Dermot Mulroney, Josh Gad, Lukas Haas, Matthew Modine) - “Jobs” has a lot of things working against it as a film, the most obvious being the questionable talent of celebrity Ashton Kutcher. When we meet the barefoot Jobs he has dropped out of college and is sleeping on a bench, but still carrying a notebook and attending classes. We watch him do drugs and look at the sky, argue and speak down to the imagination team of Atari. Finally his creative interests are peaked when friend Steve Wozniak (Gad) introduces him to this thing called a personal computer he is working on. We watch as this smelly hippie becomes obsessed with out-inventing not only the competition, but anyone. His hostile ambition begins to destroy the personal and professional relationships he has made and force everyone to question his real motives. “I can’t work for other people; I just need my independence.” The film opens with a prologue introducing us to Kutcher as the face of the deceased creator as he unveils the iPod in 2001. Kutcher’s look certainly does embody the man we have seen in photos (at least from behind). One of the few positives of casting Kutcher (“Dude, Where’s My Car,” “No Strings Attached”) in this nearly villainous role is that his own noted narcissism and destructive behavior was an easy persona for him to adhere to. Final Thought – A fascinating human being in a very stale production. “Kick A**2” (Grade B, Rated R; Aaron Taylor Johnson, Chloe Grace Moretz, Christopher Mintz Plasse, Jim Carrey) - Maybe the best sequel of the year (don’t get excited, that isn’t saying a lot) manages to find that flexible line between stupidity, entertainment and an important message for viewers (especially those who think being a superhero is cool). The last time we saw “Kick A**” (Johnson) and Hit Girl (Moretz), they had killed the evil father of Red Mist (Plasse). Hit Girl continues to fight crime and train Kick A** on how to be a better fighter. However, after pleading from her caretaker, Det. Marcus (Morris Chestnut), she decided to hang up her costume. Kick A** joins other crime fighting, costumer wearing self-made superheroes called Justice Forever, led by Colonel Stars & Stripes (Carrey). After the sudden death of
his mother and complete inheritance of his family’s estate, Chris moves beyond Red Mist into a new super villain identity, wanting nothing more than to kill Kick A**. Johnson, who looks far too old to still be playing a high school character, impresses me more with each film he does. He is a true star and a very talented actor. Plasse only knows how to play one character; however, I do like the fact that his revenge and evil plot is derived from something very simple and organic. He isn’t out to rule or destroy the world, he just wants to avenge his father. Final Thought – Makes more sense than most Marvel films. “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” (Grade B, Rated PG-13; Forest Whitaker, Oprah Winfrey, David Oyelowo, Terrance Howard, Cuba Gooding Jr., Lenny Kravitz, John Cusack, Robin Williams, Jane Fonda, Vanessa Redgrave, Mariah Carey) Using many of the actors he has worked with in the past, not to mention a quarter of Hollywood taking small but vital roles in the film, “The Butler” reaches for greatness but never really grasps it. “The room should feel empty when you are in it,” a young Cecil Gaines is told by the slave owner who brings him into her house to serve after the boy watches his father murdered in the cotton fields. Cecil is good at taking orders, very passive; “it’s a white man’s world, we are just living in it,” is one of the last things his father said to him. That notion takes Cecil (Whitaker) to Washington DC, where he lands a highly coveted job as a butler in The White House. From Eisenhower (Williams) to Reagan (Rickman), Cecil worked diligently to provide for his family and set an example for all those around him. The film’s real highlight and strong point is the contrast and disagreement between father and son (Oyelowo). We see Cecil sipping champagne in The White House while his son is out, literally fighting for the rights of those discriminated against. Producer Harvey Weinstein has made quite the spectacle of Oprah’s return to cinema, and her role as the wife has clearly been stretched as far as it can be. However, unless voters want to nominate her just because of her name, it isn’t an awards caliber performance. It’s a nice film that will likely refresh many on their history, but doesn’t come close to having the effect or emotion of “The Help.” Final Thought – Daniels’ The Butler doesn’t offer much more than a history lesson. “Planes” (Grade C, Rated PG; Voices of Dane Cook, Stacy Keach, Teri Hatcher, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Brad Garrett) - In “Planes,” the underdog is a crop duster that has aspirations for competing in the Wings around the Globe, an international aerial race. Dusty Crophopper (Cook) has a beat-up pickup friend, Chug (Garrett), who is his personal cheerleader, and a mechanic, Dottie (Hatcher), who scolds him at first about going beyond his station
in life, but later relents to his and Chug’s pleas to prepare him for racing. He also manages to get an old fighter pilot, Skipper (Keach), to coach him in high flying and encourage him to overcome his fear of heights. Excitement and intrigue come during the race when it looks like Dusty may have a chance to win, but the reigning champion, Ripslinger (Roger Craig Smith), is not above pulling dirty tricks to impede his progress. One significant drawback of “Planes” is the amount of time spent in the beginning on racing and mechanical jargon that is likely to go over the heads of kids—and likely most adults’ as well. “We’re The Millers” ( Grade C+, Rated R; Jennifer Aniston, Jason Sudeikis, Will Poulter, Emma Roberts, Ed Helms) - The script weaves us in and out of unrealistic scenarios that garner a few laughs every now and then (unless you are the couple sitting behind me that laughed at everything so hard they missed half the jokes). A pot dealer, a stripper (Anniston), a runaway and a virgin all fly to Arizona to drive into Mexico to smuggle drugs back across the border for Brad the dealer (Helms). David (Sudeikis) owes Brad big time and this trip should more than cover his debts, but how do you fool the border guards with a huge RV full of drugs? With a happy-go-lucky family, of course. David coaxes his fake wife Rose (Aniston), daughter Casey (Roberts) and son Kenny (Poulter) into the trip because they are all as desperate as he is for money or, in Kenny’s case, something to do. Of course, pretending to be a family when you don’t have one feels pretty good after a while. Unfortunately, in today’s comedy environment studios think ticket buyers want to see three essential elements: penis jokes, drugs, and vulgarity. “We’re The Millers” makes sure those things are virtually in every scene. This movie is hoping to get the same type of response the last time Aniston and Sudeikis got raunchy together in “Horrible Bosses.” The script takes a family summer road trip story (think “RV” with Robin Williams or one of the “Vacation” films with Chevy Chase) and makes it very perverted. We even have a scene where the mother and daughter teach their son how to kiss while daddy films it. Final Thought – A vulgar and raunchy comedy of a family road trip to Mexico. “The Spectacular Now” (Grade B+, Rated R; Miles Teller, Shailene Woodley, Brie Larson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Kyle Chandler, Mary Elizabeth Winstead) From the screenwriters of “500 Days of Summer” and the director of last year’s severely underrated and overlooked “Smashed” (also starring Winstead) comes the type of film that puts honesty before entertainment value and is better for it. 18-year-old Sutter (Teller) doesn’t know if he wants to graduate high school because he lives for the moment and
doesn’t have plans for tomorrow, not to mention the next year. His ability to make everyone feel good about themselves is the reason for his September 6th popularity; girls like Riddick him because he is Adore relaxed, due in part September 13th because he is always Insidious: Chapter 2 buzzed on alcohol. The Family Following his breakup with steady girlfriend September 20th Cassidy (Larson), he Prisoners wakes from a drunken night on the lawn with September 27th Aimee (Woodley), who Rush is plain, organically Baggage Claim beautiful and innocent. Don Jon Sutter is the first boy October 4th to ever show her any Gravity romantic attention and Runner Runner she falls quick and hard and he is forced with October 11th selfishly pursuing her Captain Phillips or pushing her away Machete Kills for her own good. Is The Fifth Estate it coincidence that Romeo & Juliet director James Ponsoldt followed up one film of alcohol abuse with another? It’s certainly a topic that doesn’t get enough dramatic attention. Alcohol abuse is typically portrayed as something cool and fun. Just like he did with “Smashed,” Ponsoldt and the writers allow the audience to see all sides of this character who is trying to numb himself from the disappointment he feels, mostly towards himself. It’s a tough role to pull off, and Teller (“Footloose,” “Rabbit Hole”) does a pretty impressive job. Throughout the film we feel some sort of downward spiral or tragedy around every corner. Woodley’s perfectly raspy voice and carefree wardrobe as Aimee make her the iconic girl next door. Sure she is a nerd, but she is beautiful even though Woodley doesn’t wear an ounce of makeup. The only problem here is casting Woodley as the girl no one notices. The scene where Sutter finally meets and understands his father (and in turn his mother), we realize what “The Spectacular Now” does is allow one person to stare into their future and make a choice if they want to follow in the same footsteps or become something greater than everyone around him is encouraging. It’s a tough film, but one that I think parents might find great conversation in with their teenager after watching. Final Thought – Beautifully-painful with terrific performances and an important message.

Starring Michael Shannon, Winona Ryder, Ray Liotta, Chris Evans, David Schwimmer, James Franco, Stephen Dorff Grade B-
This dark and bitter new film is about one thing: the talent of Oscar nominee Michael Shannon. At this point in his career, Shannon (“Take Shelter,” “Mud”) is one of the most in-demand character actors when you want someone emotionally cold. “The Iceman,” based on the shocking true story of a hit man in the 1960-80’s who killed over 100 people and led a double life as a family man, couldn’t be a more perfect fit for Shannon, who effortlessly slides in and out of these brilliant and unforgettable characters, always leaving the audience with an eerie feeling of getting to know someone he has portrayed. Richard Kuklinksi (Shannon) started in the editing room of the porno business but was recruited by New York crime boss Roy Demeo (Liotta) to carry out hits on those who either got in his way or didn’t pay up. Richie was able to provide for his wife (Ryder) and his two girls and be a successful, proud and loving father. His duel identities worked perfectly until things got ugly with the criminals and the media took notice of the many dead bodies which were frozen and then disposed of piece by piece. “The Iceman,” they labeled him, a cold personality but a protective father and husband above everything else. The unique quality about this film compared to other recent hitman flicks like “Killing Them Softly” is that this one is rooted in facts and true accounts. The fascinating element to “The Iceman” is the portrayal by Shannon, who can also be seen as a villain in the upcoming “Man of Steel.” Although villain isn’t the right word for Kuklinski, who viewed the murders as nothing more than his job. 33-year-old Israli born director Ariel Vromen taps into the same fine line we saw in “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” where we as the audience almost want him to get away with it. The cast is impressive with actors like James Franco in small roles because they just wanted to be a part of this project. Chris Evans is unusually good here, as is Ryder as the wife who doesn’t ask questions. Vromen doesn’t apply any really impressive camera techniques regarding the violent scenes or impress the audience with cinematic skills and this is likely due to his background in documentary and sports work. “The Iceman” is pretty straightforward in its artistic quality. The story is fascinating and that, along with Shannon, is what’s worth watching here. Final Thought – Another stunning performance from Michael Shannon.
“Now You See Me:” The Illusion of A Magic Audience
Starring Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher, Dave Franco, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine
“tricks”—such as distraction—although these may not be explained until after the fact. In this story, banks are robbed and money showers down on the audience or appears mysteriously in their bank accounts. (They have excellent methods for holding our attention!) The story moves along quickly, although we’re told “not to look too closely” or we’ll miss the hints, leads, and cues; it moves so quickly that, after it was over, the person next to me said she needed to see it again. I’m sure she wasn’t the only one with this feeling. The story, written by Boaz Yakim and Edward Recourt and lead screenwriter Ed Soloman, is well put together, with no obvious plot weaknesses. They poke fun at themselves a bit when the FBI pursuers of the Four Horsemen are given the lines to say disparagingly, “These are stage actors; not well seasoned criminals!,” implying that catching them should be a cinch. The scheme the writers have devised for the heists and magic shows is scrupulous down to the last detail, and the director Louis Leterrier has masterfully put it all together into a suspenseful and humorous show. The actors are extremely well chosen for their parts, and the script brings out the best of their talents: Eisenberg the fast talker, Harrelson the “mentalist,” Fisher the beautiful “assistant,” Franco the boy who becomes a man in his heroism, Caine as the seemingly man behind the magic, and Freeman as the crafty one with schemes of his own. Melanie Laurent as the intuitive Interpol agent is a perfect foil for Ruffalo, the apparent dogged detective who is overly reliant on logic. The two are at odds for most of the time, and although they do end up together in a sense, the chemistry isn’t quite there. This is not much of a problem, however. Final thought - Try to avoid hearing much about the plot beforehand, because the element of surprise is critical to your enjoyment of “Now You See Me.”

The Moral Demise of a Family
Dennis Quaid, Zac Efron, Maika Monroe, Kim Dickens, Heather Graham Grade C
I didn’t believe writer/director Ramin Bahrani when he told me that this was a much darker Grade A role for superstar Zac Efron (“The Lucky One,” “The Paperboy”) and Dennis Quaid (“Far From How clever it is to present this film as a demonstration of magic and the power of manipulating Heaven,” “Soul Surfer”). The film is set up as a audience perception—I mean the audience in the family drama where a generational family farmer story as well as we, the audience. It helps that most wants nothing more than his sons to take over of us would like to believe in magic, so we are very after he is gone. However, “At Any Price” pushes susceptible to illusion, especially if it is well conthe boundaries of what the audience is willing ceived and smartly executed. The movie begins to tolerate this family getting away with, and the with a magic show in progress with performers message of the film never seems to produce any played by Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Isla repercussions. “Why are my own children trying Fisher and David Franco—“The Four Horsemen.” to sabotage me?,” he asks, unaware that poor parThey introduce the Michael Caine character as a enting skills have and continue to lead to the moral sponsor, and we see Morgan Freeman as another demise of the family. character taking pictures of the performance. Henry (Quaid), who boasts of his leading majority in 17 counties, he wants to pass the legacy to his eldest, who has left Iowa to explore the world. Henry’s younger son Dean (Efron) is the spitting image of his father, but doesn’t want anything to do with the business; instead, he races cars. “I put myself in these cars so I don’t have to talk to you,” he says. Some illegal activity Henry has been doing has been discovered and he is being investigated, not to mention cheating on his wife (Dickens) with the local girl everyone seems to visit. Although they all seem to despise each other, Henry and Dean still protect one another even when it means ruining others. While this role is something very dark for Efron, he is still playing the hunk as he has in every film since he graduated from “High School Musical” to film. Quaid is actually cast here quite perfectly as a sleazy farming version of a business shark (i.e. the type Nicholas Cage usually plays). It’s the inner conflict that Henry is tormented

The Third Annual Film Festival at Liberty Hall
The Third Annual Downtown Tyler Film Festival will be September 25-28th. This Festival is open to the public and will showcase outstanding new short films in the awesome environment of the Liberty Hall. The Downtown Tyler Film Festival features short films of 10 minutes or less in a multitude of genres, including comedy, drama, horror, sci-fi, action, documentaries and more. Innovative new directors, cinematographers and actors will converge in East Texas to share their imagination and the joy of the dramatic arts. Some of the best new producers will be going head-to-head for top prize money, with the competition fast and fun. This will be an event to remember, and definitely one you will not want to miss. Each night of the festival, different genres will be shown, with the “best of” the festival being shown the last night, Saturday, September 28th, starting at 7pm. Also this night, the winning films will be announced. Prizes will include: Best Narrative, $1,000; Best Documentary, $500; Best Texas Film, $500; Best Animated Film, $250; and Best Student Film, $250. The 2013 Festival Schedule: • Wednesday-Friday, September 25-27th, 7-9pm: Presentation of films in competition, with attending filmmaker Q&As after each film • Saturday, September 28th daytime: Breakout sessions, see www.TylerFilmFest.com for details • Saturday, September 28th, 7-9pm: Presentation of “Best of the Fest” films plus announcement of winners and presentation of awards • Saturday, September 28th: the Gallery Main Street for all Saturday night badge holders
with that provides Quaid quite a few good scenes, making him better than he has been in a while. These characters are so ruthless, however, that there is only one person the audience can sympathize with, and that’s Dean’s girlfriend (Monroe), who comes from a terrible family but has the best moral compass. Bahrani’s view of women as a whole in the film is a bit twisted; they are either whores or the women who take up for their men even when they know they are wrong. “At Any Price” does get a pretty interesting and detailed look at big and small farming in America and the vicious competitiveness between the two. The film seems to want to explore ruthlessness, but it does so in a way that seems to praise the behavior of this family. I am not sure what audiences or even I am supposed to take away from this except that to win in life you have to destroy those around you. Final Thought – One of the darkest films at SXSW 2013. Saturday night’s films are the “Best of the Fest” and include announcement of the winners. The Saturday night after-party includes free food and drinks for badge holders. • $5 Daily Pass are available for Wednesday-Friday • $15 Saturday Film and Party Pass which includes the “Best of the Fest” films and the after-party • $25 Producer’s All Access Pass includes all four nights, plus the Saturday after-party The festival is organized by the film working group of the Downtown Tyler Arts Coalition, an organization under the auspices of the City of Tyler Main Street Department and Heart of Tyler, Inc. Also, they are looking for volunteers to help make the Film Fest this year be a success. Go to downtowntyler.ivolunteer.com/dtfilmfestival to sign up. Festivals 98th East Texas State Fair:
A Fun Traditions
The first thing I think of when I hear the words “East Texas State Fair” is corn dogs; the second is cooler weather. I remember my parents telling me to ‘finish all my home work or you can’t go to the fair’-that was probably the only week my home work was ever done on time. Fair time in Tyler has always been a favorite for the young and old - the smell of turkey legs and funnel cakes, the lights and sounds of people having fun without a care in the world. You can leave your troubles at the gate because once you step through into the bright lights you can not help but have a great time. Not only is the East Texas State Fair fun but it is also good for our community. Did you know that the East Texas State Fair has been providing education and entertainment to the local community for over 90 years? Since 1992, the East Texas State Fair has offered $435,000 in scholarships to area students. This year, September 20th-29th, brings additional attractions for the entire family to enjoy. This season the East Texas State Fair will host “The Great American Frontier Wild West Show,” “Wolves of the World,” “Sinbad High Dive & Aquabatics Show,” Wade Henry performing throughout the fairgrounds, Cosmo’s spray paint performance art, Sandscapes 75-ton sand sculpture, free nightly concerts, great retail and informational vendors and of course, food, food and more food! The East Texas State Fair is organized exclusively for charitable and educational purposes through the operation of an annual event promoting education, entertainment and the spirit of competition. The Fair is committed to agricultural heritage, families and service to the community. Events this year includes a great line up of music starting with “Take 2 Band” on September 20th, 8pm; “JB and The Moonshine Band” on September 21st, 8pm; “La Invasora” September 22nd, 8pm; “Lacie Carpenter & The Southern String Band” on September 23rd, 7:30pm; The Alan Fox Band on September 24th, 7:30pm; “Folk Family Revival” on September 25th, 7:30pm; “George Gee & Kindred” on September 26th, 7:30pm; “Tyler Lenius Band” on September 27th, 8pm; and from the hit TV show “The Voice” comes “The Swon Brothers” on September 28th, 8pm. There will as always be lots of competitors for the Ag, Horticulture, photography and creative arts shows. These favorite exhibits are always a popular place to browse and see the many talented east Texans’ works. Here is a list of the daily specials going on at the gate this year:

Music ‘East Texas All Star Showcase:’
A Premier Music Event
When: Saturday, September 7th, gates open at 5pm Tickets: www.outhousetickets.com Cost: $20 for just admission; $35 VIP ticket, limited availability (includes access to VIP area, meet and greet with Uncle Lucius, a meal provided by Stanley’s Famous Pit Bar-B-Q, and one drink voucher) Written by Artists Nation Writer, Melissa Joseph When Andrew Trube takes the stage with his band ‘Greyhounds’ for the East Texas “All Star Showcase” Saturday, September 7th, it will be the first time the Tyler native will play for a hometown crowd after signing a recording contract with Ardent Records. Trube says the road to his career as a musician began with the start of his first band in high school called the ‘Tabasco Mammies’ as he developed his blues-style playing an old Silvertone guitar at gigs on the brick streets of the downtown Tyler Square. “I was 15, 16 years-old and learned how to act on stage from watching the old guys playing in bands in Tyler, Gladewater and Longview. I was learning from these dudes at Rick’s and this old dive that was a biker bar called Marshalls. All back in the day doing that kind of stuff gave me the tools to go off on this adventure I’ve been on,” he said during a phone interview just a couple days before signing the record deal. The band will release a new project in the Spring of 2014 after traveling to Memphis, Tennessee to record at the label’s legendary studios - where artists such as ‘Led Zeppelin,’ ‘Bob Dylan,’ Stevie Ray Vaughn’ and others have produced some 70 gold- and platinumalbums and singles. This is a sweet deal for Trube, who says he is on the road most of the time either touring with the band ‘JJ Grey’ and once home [he] heads out again with ‘Greyhounds.’ “It’s been 15 years since I started this. I mean I literally walked off
the stage from my high school graduation ceremony at the Oil Palace in Tyler and left for Los Angeles,” says the Robert E. Lee High School graduate who adds, “it’s only been the past three to four years that I’ve started to feel some success working as a professional artist.” “I’d rather have a slow cooked meal than a McDonald’s hamburger,” he jokes. Trube’s unfolding story and presence at the “All Star Showcase” affirms organizers decision to tweak the run down from the past two years to now include artists of all genres. “With East Texas and Tyler in particular being one of the most rapidly growing communities in the state, it is imperative that we accommodate that growth in the entertainment sector as well. This is a prime opportunity for the community to get a one-stop shop look
at the talented individuals that provide that service on a regular basis, as well as those who have made a career in visual and performing arts,” says organizer Trent Spradlin with Clean Slate Media Events. The showcase will once again take place on the downtown Tyler Square with performances scheduled to happen outdoors on the brick streets. National touring artist ‘Uncle Lucius’ returns to headline the music line-up with eight bands total scheduled to play. Band line-up and schedule is: ‘Uncle Lucius’.......... 11:30pm-1am (Main Stage) ‘Bigsbys’............................... 11-11:30pm (Stage 2) ‘Greyhounds’.................... 10-11pm (Main Stage) ‘Lucas Young’........................9:45-10pm (Stage 2) ‘Stefan & The C-Otters’.....8:45pm (Main Stage) *Special Collaboration with ‘DJack’* ‘Man No Sober’............... 8-8:45pm (Main Stage) ‘Channel 8’...............................7:45-8pm (Stage 2) ‘Lucas Young’.................. 7-7:45pm (Main Stage) ‘Channel 8’...............................6:30-7pm (Stage 2) ‘Blacktop Mojo’........................................6-6:30pm The event will also feature an “Artist Alley” that displays the work of over 20 East Texas artist vendors with several ‘live art’ demonstrations including that of vendor, Julia Bradshaw Mauldin. The body painter says she plans to transform a female model into a living breathing human billboard in order to promote a local artist networking group, “Artists Nation.” Group director Matthew Martin says his organization was formed in an effort to help pool resources, ideas and offer support. “Artists Nation is made up of creative individuals, from all ages and paths of life, that share the same objective. We want to see a successful and unified Art Scene develop and prosper throughout East Texas, so we decided to do something about it. The “East Texas All Star Showcase” is a perfect example of different groups and art scenes coming together to improve East Texas,” says Matthew. Mauldin is a member of the group herself and, though body paint models often wear nothing but the paint and a smile, she does NOT see that happening for the showcase. “Tyler just isn’t ready for that yet,” jokes Mauldin who started “Jujubilee’s” as a part time gig as she worked a full time job while booking face painting gigs for children’s events part time to pay the bills as a struggling single mother. The “All Star Showcase” will also include the opportunity to give back to Liberty Hall through artwork up for auction with proceeds to benefit movies and concerts played at the Liberty Hall venue on the downtown Tyler square.

Don t miss... ‘Wes Jeans’ - September 7th at XLN On 5th In October of 2009 this Texas Tornado struck again with the release of his highly anticipated live CD “Live at Music City Texas,” recorded at a sold out show at the Music City Texas Theater in Linden on January 17, 2009. The walls roared as Wes cranked the show open with “Forest of the Pines,” a true representation of his East Texas roots. It continued to kick into overdrive when Wes was joined on stage by friend and fellow guitarist Lance Lopez. To top off the nitrous packed performance Wes and fellow song writer Jason Helms performed “Devil in Me,” which was just a taste of the future studio CD, “Blood, Sweat and Years”. Fans all across the country agree the closest you will get to the live raw stage power of Wes Jeans is “Live at Music City Texas”. Throughout his career, Wes has had the honor of meeting and sharing the stage with many musical greats such as B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Jimmie Vaughan, Billy Gibbons, David Lee Roth, Dick Dale, Eric Johnson, Hubert Sumlin, Lynryd Skynyrd, Robert Cray, Joe Bonamassa, Indigenous, Lance Lopez, Chris Duarte, and Kenny Wayne Shepherd, just to name of few. ‘Texas Young Gun’ Wes Jeans has managed to make some waves in his young career while still toiling the road the old-fashioned way across the country. In addition to his aggressive style of Blues playing, between shows this determined young player drives the van, handles his press obligations via his cell phone, lugs all of his equipment on and off stage... undaunted... night after night.... town after town. His dedication to his trade is both honorable and humbling but it’s a true representation of the man behind the guitar. Wes Jeans is a road-tested and approved true Texas star. ‘Bushrod Jenkins’ - September 13th at Rick’s on the Square Bushrod Jenkins roots go back nearly 15 years when drummer Chris Lefebvre and bassist Brian Clark, after suffering through years of boring casino and wedding gigs, joined forces to do something different for both of them. The result was a funk/hip hop trio called ‘The Wunderdogs.’ The group found immediate success in the area playing thousands of shows over the next 10 years. Member changes over those years led to the lineup that would eventually become ‘Bushrod Jenkins.’ With new players Greg Fulco on guitar and energetic frontman Jody Kirkpatrick, the sound turned decidedly more rock. Wanting a new identity, ‘Bushrod Jenkins’ was born! For the past 5 years, ‘Bushrod Jenkins’ has grown to be one the top drawing bands in the Ark-La-Tex region. Their high energy shows are a blend of new and old rock, outlaw country and hip hop and dance, with every song being a signature “sing at the top of your lungs” anthem! ‘Something Blue’ - September 14th at The Iron Horse Saloon ‘Something Blue’ has been re-imagining the Texas music scene and gaining fans since 2004 one live performance at a time. That’s when founding members, Delano Guevara (guitar/ vocals) and Angelo Lopez (electric and upright bass), decided to reinvent what a blues based rock-band could be: equal parts stripped-bare rock and juke-joint bounce, with the chops to cover anything lying in between. With the 2012 additions of new front man Daniel Wilson (lead vocals) and Terry Roberts (drums / vocals), ‘Something Blue’ has reached its prime in delivering what the group has guaranteed to fans from day one... quality, diversity and entertainment. Having opened for ‘Jimmy Vaughan,’ ‘Buddy Guy,’ and ‘John Mayall’ in the bands early days– to name just a few – ‘Something Blue’ developed a non-traditional sound that incorporates influences ranging from ‘Merle Haggard’ and ‘Buck Owens,’ to ‘Nirvana’ and ‘Rage Against The Machine.’ Rollicking choruses, searing guitar, rolling bass lines and gospel-trained, demon drumming captivates every type of audience – from classic blues enthusiasts to rock fans…to the people who care absolutely nothing about music and there strictly to party. ‘Sara Hickman’ - September 22nd at Liberty Hall ‘Sara Hickman’ has garnered recognition as a captivating singer/ songwriter, vocalist and musician, with artists such as ‘Shawn Colvin,’ ‘The Flatlanders,’ ‘Robert Earl Keen,’ ‘Willie Nelson’ and many others covering her songs. On her Kirtland Records debut release “Shine,” Hickman delivers another memorable collection of 10 songs that will take the listener on an intense journey destined to evoke a broad spectrum of emotions. Sensitive and fearless, “Shine” is another testament to Hickman’s diverse and emotional songwriting capabilities that appeal to a wide range of audiences. ‘Greyhounds’ - September 27th at Stanley’s BBQ ‘Greyhounds’ are Andrew Trube (Tyler) and Anthony Farrell (Los Angeles). The two met in 1999 after Anthony replied to an ad in the New Times by auditioning for Andrew over the phone. Shortly after they assembled a band, released their first record (“Waiting for Francis”) and hit the road. After touring the U.S. and Canada for 5 years Trube and Farrell jumped off the road and went back to Trube’s hometown of Tyler to write songs for their second release, “Liberty.” The album was written in the historic Liberty Hall in downtown Tyler and recorded in New Orleans with Robert Mecurio and Stanton Moore (Galactic) lending their production talents. The track “Black Hole” featured the vocal help from Ani DiFranco. Once again the band found themselves on the road. In 2009, Taylor Hicks (“American Idol”) asked the ‘Greyhounds’ to open up his U.S. tour and the two were once again out on the road. Shortly after returning home, the band released their third full length album, “No Mas,” a live studio album recorded in less than 4 hours. ‘Greyhounds’ continues to tour the country and recently released a new EP “Spring Training,” with a followup album scheduled to be released this fall, “School Supplies.” Over the years the duo has written songs that have been recorded and performed live by Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, and Ruthie Foster, to name a few. Additionally, Trube and Farrell lend their studio production talents to emerging artists in the Austin community and beyond.

Things to Do Kiepersol Winery:
A Tour of History In The Making, And Wine of Course By Gini Rainey It hasn’t been that long ago that Pierre de Wet was told that East Texas was not a good place to begin a vineyard, but in the time since he immigrated to the United States from South Africa in 1984, he has become a successful entrepreneur to a vast estate just a short drive from Tyler. Proving all of the sceptics wrong, he has built an empire that not only includes a cattle-ranching business but a sprawling residential community, a bed & breakfast complex with an upscale restaurant, and an incredible entertainment center, but also a winery and tasting room, all at Kiepersol Estates. When I was asked if I would like write an article for “EGuide” about the winery tour at Kiepersol, I jumped at the chance to see how this legendary man was able to take the rolling countryside outside of Bullard, Texas, that sits on top of a salt dome, and turn it into such a phenomenal success in a relatively short time. After all, I have a few bottles of KE wine in my rack and have enjoyed the subtle aromas and flavors of these wines on several occasions. Besides, don’t you get to have free samples on tours? Running a tad late, as I tend to do lately, I was able to tag onto the tour that had started a few minutes earlier. It began in the room behind the rustic gift shop in what was the original winery. There was a definite acrid smell of oak and wine in the air as I sat down to hear Terry Morrow, a retired cop and current tour guide, telling a bit about the beginnings of the winery. The first plantings, consisting of 5 grape varietals, covered 14 acres. The first harvest was in the year 2000 and produced 24 barrels of wine. Since that time, the vineyard has grown to cover 66 acres, that has 14 varietals that produces 800 barrels of wine. It was interesting to learn that all of the estate grapes are harvested by hand, although the stems and leaves, etc., are separated from the fruit by machine. As we stood looking out over the original acreage, we were joined briefly by Michael McClendon, who is the enologist (wine chemist) and one of two wine-makers at Kiepersol. Originally intent on becoming a doctor, Michael joined the winery in 2008 to work as a summer intern during the first harMarnell de Wet vest. He worked at the winery partDurrett, Pierre’s time while continuing his studies at UTT and after two years was prodaughter and moted to winemaker. Marnell de co-owner of the Wet Durrett, Pierre’s daughter and winery, is the other co-owner of the winery, is the other winemaker at winemaker and has what it takes to Kiepersol and has be a great winemaker - a great palate, passion, commitment and patience. what it takes to be a While we were standing in the great winemaker - a bright sunshine, we could hear the great palate, passion, squawking of birds coming out of the commitment, and vineyard. Apparently, bug control is managed by a troop of guinea hens patience. that wander through the plantings during the day. Additionally, we were told that all of the leaves and stems are put back on top of the ground surrounding the plantings as fertilizer. Talk about being green! Our next stop was the high-ceilinged warehouse that contains the stainless steel fermenting tanks. The size of these tanks is overwhelming! They all had, in addition to other information, the date that they were filled with the grapes’ juice. Most of them had been recently filled, because harvest for the year was over. It definitely was an impressive display of equipment. At the back of this room is a complete laboratory that Michael uses to oversee the development of the bouquet and richness of the wine. It’s interesting to note, that because of the extreme sweetness of the grapes being produced at Kiepersol, this winery is one of the few in Texas that does not add any sugar to their process. Off to the rear and down a steep set of stairs is the barrel room which houses an impressive display of oak barrels, floor to ceiling, that contain the maturing wines. We learned about the making of these barrels that are augered on the inside to create a smooth surface for the wine. Also, interestingly, all of the corks that are used in all wine-making come from Portugal, which is the only country that produces them. the immature wine from several tanks. The first, which had an interesting flavor of grapefruit, was quite dry. This sample, along with the extremely sweet, last sample we had are wines that are produced for blending purposes. After answering a few more questions from the group, Terry announced that our tour was complete and led us back to the gift shop/tasting room where there was an opportunity to taste several of the bottled wines. All in all, this was a great way to spend some time and to learn a bit about the winery that faith and determination has built. The de Wets are an extremely close and hard-working family, and are not resting on their laurels. There are plans in the future for bottling and marketing the sweet water from the artesian well Pierre dug near the original 14-acres, and also to begin making a new type of vodka from grapes. Tasting Room Kiepersol’s tasting room is located at the top of the rolling vineyard and features tastings of all their current wine selections and a gift shop. All tastings are $1 for a 1-ounce pour of wine. The gift shop is stocked with hard to find wine accessories, glassware, and Kiepersol-related gifts and goodies. They welcome you to engage in wine tastings, tours of the winemaking process, and to relax on the veranda overlooking the expansive vista of the vineyard. Tours Guided tours through the winery processing facility are available every Saturday at 2pm and 4pm for $5 per person. Private tours can be booked for $10 per person ($40 minimum) at other times depending upon staff availability. Tours last approximately thirty minutes. Try to wear flat, comfortable shoes. Mothers, fathers, children, healthcare providers, birth professionals, and anyone else who supports better, safer, more respectful maternity care. This rally is to call attention to the healthcare crisis around U.S. maternity care. Books Deep Into the Thick of It: Found: A Favorite of All Time
This month I am covering a few of my sure-to-be new favorite books that I recently discovered. “SEAL of HONOR: Operation Red Wings and the Life of Lt. Michael P. Murphy, USN” By Gary Williams Rating - 5 of 5
In an excellent tribute, not only to the loyalty and bravery of Michael P. Murphy, but also to all the men who have earned the designation of SEAL, Williams shares with the reader the story of the man who earned, with his life, the military’s highest honor for his service in Afghanistan - the Congressional Medal of Honor. Williams begins the book by capturing the feelings of anticipation, denial and agony that Murphy’s family went through following the news that several SEALs had lost their lives in an ambush attack in Afghanistan. Although the family tried to convince themselves that Michael was stationed in Iraq and not involved in this attack, they were filled with a tremendous dread that one of the men lost was their loved one. Williams not only does an excellent job of portraying the family’s grief in a sensitive manner, but by sharing the military’s compassionate treatment of the family, the reader becomes aware of how closely knit the ranks are of our men who serve. This book is distinctly divided into three parts, with the first being dedicated to the loss of Michael and the dignity with which he was honored in the days that followed his death. The second section is devoted to an inside look at Michael’s journey to become a member of the most highly trained and specialized military units in the world. Because this journey is not an easy one by any means, it is this fundamental difference that sets SEALs apart from any other military branch. SEALs are acutely aware that freedom is not free and their ultimate goal is to watch their families and friends enjoy the freedoms they have helped to secure. The journey that is chronicled by Williams’ excellent writing will put the reader’s face in the sand and body in the icy waters of the Pacific, right along with the SEALs in training. The final section of this book is devoted to the day by day planning of the mission to capture - or eliminate - Mullah Ahmad Shah, one of Osama bin Laden’s top lieutenants, who was holed up in a village near the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. This was definitely a breath-holding section, and one I found difficult to read, but one I certainly did not want to walk away from. With hard-edged leadership, Murphy brought himself and his team of three other SEALs into the mountains overlooking the village. Out of range of telephone communication and securing their location, they found themselves surrounded by the heavily-armed enemy. With all of the SEALs having been hit many times and with two possibly dead, the only way to make call for reinforcements was for Murphy to move out into the open and try to make contact with the base. With incredible strength and the determination to save his men, he entered the clearing, was shot in the back, fell to the ground, pulled himself up, and finished the call before dying. Lt. Murphy was not alone in heroic actions that day. The rescue helicopter carrying 16 SEALs and Night Stalkers was shot through the underside, forcing it to crash into the side of the nine-thousandfoot mountain in front of them, killing all aboard. June 28, 2005 remains the day with the highest number special force fatalities, since June 4, 1944. Copyright 2010 - Naval Institute Press Footnote - The only survivor of “The Battle For Murphy’s Ridge,” Marcus Luttrell, has also written a book about this conflict, “Lone Survivor.” You can be sure that this is a high priority on my reading list! “The Piano: A Novel” By Jane Campion and Kate Pullinger
Paquin. The book, however, does help the reader/viewer to have a full grasp of the compelling issues that have brought self-muted Ada, her fatherless daughter Flora, and the piano to the wilds of the newly immerging New Zealand. This novel, indeed, further explores the mesmerizing characters and their stories that we were introduced to in the movie. For anyone who has not seen either the movie or read the book, be prepared to identify with at least one of the emotions presented between the covers. Whether it be loneliness, hunger, passion, desperation, guilt, anger, estrangement or greed, everyone has had, at least once in their lifetime, a time where their emotions ruled their thoughts and their actions. Although this book has been around quite awhile, I doubt seriously that many readers are familiar with it – only the movie. I suggest picking up a copy of it, along with the sound track from the movie, and settling down to a decent read that is filled with all of the subtle passion, anger, and angst a person could handle. Copyright 1994 – Miramax Books “Nox” By Anne Carson Rating - 4 ½ out of 5
This is a wonderfully unusual book, if for no other reason than its format. Written by Anne Carson as an epitaph for her brother Michael, this book is a full color, facsimile of the handmade book she wrote and created after his death. This collection of thoughts, poems, remembrances, and photographs is based on “Poem 101” by Catullus (a late poet of the Roman Empire who wrote a poem for his brother who died in the Troad) and arrives to us in the form of a fascinating and unique physical object. This “book” is contained in a unique cardboard box that opens to a 2 inch thick, accordion-folded, scrapbook replicating the original book. It contains lots of Anne’s thoughts, significant poems, remembrances of Michael, photographs from their past together, and bits and pieces of paper with notations, which all together make you feel as though you are going through someone’s private collection of memories. Initially motivated to begin a scrapbook after finding an old shoebox filled with her notes and letters in a closet, the book took on a new direction after Anne learned of her brother’s death in Copenhagen. She simply posted at that time, “3.1. My brother dies in Copenhagen in the year 2000 a surprise to me” and thus began a new direction and purpose for the book. Michael had always been a troubled boy and somewhere along the way he had begun dealing drugs. In 1978, he ran away rather than go to jail, and eventually ended up on the streets in Amsterdam. He wrote once to Anne to say that he had fallen in love with a woman named Anna who had died suddenly; he also had married at least two other women. Carson additionally includes, in the book, a fragment of a letter written by her mother asking Michael for an address where she might send a “box for Christmas.” Anne had only spoken to him a half dozen times during the time after he left and when Michael’s wife finally located Anne, 2 weeks had passed since his death and cremation. Left with a lot of unanswered questions, she traveled to Denmark to meet Michael’s widow and to find some closure. A mourner is always searching for traces of a lost loved one after they die, and Anne was no exception. This scrapbook, with its bits of handwriting, stamps, and stains are a testimonial force that this person, Michael, truly did exist. Carson slips between lyrical and analytical, page to page, but in the end, presents the reader with an unique experience that will invoke a certain amount of nostalgia and longing that we can all relate to. Copyright 2010 - New Directions Books “Cooking in Oz” By Elaine Willingham and Steve Cox Rating - 5 out of 5
Now here’s a fun cook book for anyone who has ever seen or heard of “The Wizard of Oz!” The reason I love collecting celebrity cook books is because of all the wonderful photos and history that they contain. This one is no exception. Beginning with a wonderful foreword written by Margaret Pellegrini, one of the Munchkins in the film, straight through to a photo on the back cover of Bert Lahr, the cowardly lion, as the advertising spokesperson for Lay’s Potato Chips, this book is an exceptional trip down memory lane. Of course, like most cook books, this one begins with the appetizer section which is fittingly called “We Welcome You To Rating - 3 of 5 Munchkin Land for Starters” and contains wonderfully titled recipes such as “Monkey Wings” and “Tornado Logs.” The book concludes In the award-winning film “The Piano,” writer/director Jane Campion created a story so original and powerful it fascinated mil- with the section “Sweets from the Heart” that features “Toto-ly Delicious Apple Cake” and “Yellow Brick Road” cake. lions of moviegoers. This novel stands independent of the film, Neatly wedged in the middle of the book is a great collection of exploring the mysteries of Ada’s muteness, the secret behind her daughter’s conception, the reason for her strange marriage, and the photos from the sets of the movie, but they can’t hold a candle to all of the wonderful photos and stories that are sprinkled throughout past lives of Baines and Stewart. the entire book. From behind the scene tales about cast members to This is one, dark book! Log on at www.tylerlibrary.com and select the “Reader’s Advisory” tab, then select the “Staff Book Reviews” option for the section “What the Library Staff Are Reading Now.” Here is one... “Night Film” by Marisha Pessl, 2013 - I love this book! “Night Film” by Marisha Pessl is a very smart, witty, fun, spooky, un-put-down-able literary mystery. It includes ephemera: photos, e-mails, newspaper and magazine articles, medical charts, police reports and websites. Like I said, this is a fun read. The suspense builds. Clues are laid out in the annotated ephemera. The novel’s main protagonist, Scott McGrath, a disgraced investigative journalist, returns to explore the source of his shame: Cordova, the legendary filmmaker whose disturbing films often cause bizarre and even violent, murderous behavior in his fans. The catalyst that compels McGrath to reopen his investigation, is the suicide of Cordova’s daughter, Ashley. Is it really suicide? Was Ashley murdered? What events in her final days led up to Ashley’s untimely demise? Cue eerie music....this is a Blair Witch ride of a book. I can’t remember when I have had this much fun!
