Dining Grounds for Justice: “It will be a shelter and shade from the heat of the day and a refuge and hiding place from the storm and rain.” By Barbara King It’s an inviting and charming coffee house with a very important difference. Come in for a coffee or pastry or to shop and your purchase can literally change a life. Grounds for Justice, an extension of the Refuge of Light Ministry, is so much more than a cup of coffee. The store houses a beautiful collection of vendor products, including artwork, frames and clothing and the coffee house will cater to your pastry cravings and specialty tea requests. Take a closer look around the store and coffee bar and you will begin to realize what the mission behind the merchandise truly is all about. “It will be a shelter and shade from the heat of the day and a refuge and hiding place from the storm and rain.” - Isaiah 4:6 is boldly displayed. The Refuge of Light faith-ministry exists to provide a safe haven, redemptive rescue and restoration of female victims of domestic minor sex trafficking through advocacy, awareness and holistic care. Missy Zivney, Assistant Director and co-founder explains that most at-risk girls are in foster care or in dysfunctional homes with addiction issues or incarcerated parents. “Our goal is to provide the girls an opportunity for a better life; to give them life skills and counseling so they can get out if they want out.” The store is named in honor of Justice, a young girl who was a victim of a sex ring in Houston. Her story is a cycle of abuse which is hard to escape and she ultimately ran from the safety of a shelter and the chance for a better life. The statistics are sobering, with the FBI reporting that there are up to 30,000 children prostituted in the United States and the number is growing daily. Under federal law, domestic minor sex trafficking victims are citizens under the age of eighteen who have been recruited, harbored or transported for sex acts in exchange for food, drugs or shelter. “Our mission is to provide hope,” explains Zivney, “and to work with the community to educate and increase awareness.” “Any child is a target, but homeless youth, runaways and loners, the most weak and susceptible, are primary targets,” explains Zivney. “Statistics show that within 48-72 hours after a runaway hits the streets, one out of three are approached by a trafficker.” There is no stereotypical victim and no common racial or socioeconomic profile. Coming through the front door of Grounds for Justice this Saturday is a group of girls living in a local shelter. They will have an art class, some sweet treats from the coffee shop and some love and attention from trained volunteers. The girls range in age from 11 to 16 and you don’t need to hear the details of their lives to see they are broken. Betty Knight has been volunteering for the ministry for two years and is giving the girls step by step instructions in watercolors. Betty is a human ray of sunshine, encouraging and praising every artist. One girl gets up to show her masterpiece and wants a big hug from Miss Betty. “A few weeks ago she was bewildered and totally non-communicative,” explains Knight. “Art can be such an expressive healing vehicle for these girls.” Amanda Tobu, herself a victim of a dysfunctional home life, was rescued by Knight’s mentoring and is now an assistant in the art class. “I was in a dark place myself, but now I want to plant seeds of hope for other girls,” explains Tobu. Refuge of Light is currently in the final stages of the completion of a therapeutic group home which will house up to 12 girls and provide on-site counseling, medical assistance, alternative accredited education, life skills, and career counseling. “The safe home will be staffed 24/7 with licensed, residential counselors and each girl will have a case-worker,” says Zivney. Girls can remain in the program for a minimum of one year, with the ultimate goal of finding appropriate long-term placement if possible. These long-term arrangements could also include a return to the home, foster care, independent living or enrollment in college. Volunteer Nikki Miller is a passionate advocate of the ministry, also growing up in a dysfunctional environment. “Every minute I spend with these girls is an investment in their futures. It can be a very lonely, shameful place without much chance of hope. It’s 4 • EGuideMagazine.com

Fall Movie Guide:
There’s Oscar Worthy Films and Some No-Ways!
“If I Stay”
time feature film director R.J. Cutler really balances the emotion, the drama and the harmony of the characters and the stressful situation. As “Twilight” was to Washington, Portland is almost a character itself within “If I Stay” as city, the weather and the boundaries constantly affect the characters. It’s far too smart to be labeled a teen romance, yet I also worry on first look that it might not appeal to adults. Both demographics should be sitting in front of this film and discussing its themes of family, sacrifice and love after drying your eyes. Final Thought – An emotional gut punch with a powerhouse performance from Moretz. Grade B+
“The Expendables 3”
Starring Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Harrison Ford, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mel Gibson, Wesley Snipes, Dolph Lundgren, Kelsey Grammer, Antonio Banderas, Kellan Luts, and Jet Li It’s a sellout! Sylvester Stallone’s third installment to the grumpy old action men series decided to clean up the language and violence for a PG-13
rating in order to bring in a younger audience. Even Mel Gibson turned down the job to direct the film while Bruce Willis asked for so much money he knew Stallone would say no and he wouldn’t have to return (Willis is the only one who actually has a reputable career). The worst thing about “The Expendables 3” is that it’s boring. If you haven’t seen the first two, however, there is not an inch of new ground here. Sure Gibson, Snipes and the “younger” Expendables bring new faces, but it’s the same on screen arguments, the same guns and predictable explosions and last minute getaways. Barney Ross (Stallone) has shaved his face and decided that he can’t live with his old crew getting killed. His latest mission is going after war criminal Stonebanks (Gibson), who is dealing in nuclear weapons overseas and almost critically wounded one of Ross’s men. Assigned a secret clearance by CIA ghost Drummer (Ford), Ross scouts a new, younger team all over the US with buddy Bonaparte (Grammer) to go in and take down Stonebanks. Soon Ross realizes he can’t function without his

I n one scene where the lives of his teammates are hanging in the balance, with time being of the essence, Ross stops in the woods to have a heartfelt discussion with Banderas’ character about what happened to his last team. “The Expendables 3” has the longest running time yet and you feel it with the endless chase and fight sequences that failed to wow me and anyone else who has seen any other movie this year. The 9th Annual T-Bone Walker Blues Fest
Featuring Jimmie Vaughn Headlining The Jam Legendary guitarist Jimmie Vaughan along with blues vocalist Lou Ann Barton will head a powerpacked musical lineup when the T-Bone Walker Blues Fest launches its 2014 Longview production on September 12th-13th. The festival, now in its ninth year, will be held at the Maude Cobb Convention Center and feature an indoor stage with reserved seating, plus an outdoor general admission stage. Performances begin at 4pm on Friday and 12 noon on Saturday. Vaughan, Barton, and their Tilt-A-Whirl band are currently returning from a 10 performance summer European festival tour that opened July 7th in London and concluded July 20th in Peer, Belgium. The group will headline the Calabogie Blues Festival in Ontario, Canada in August before making their stop in Longview to close Saturday’s performance. Heading the Saturday night Patterson Nissan outdoor stage will be blues guitarist Eric Gales and his Trio. Also on the Saturday bill are the Rick Derringer Band, Jimmie Wallace and the Stratoblasters, Texas Blues Legend Anson Funderburgh and the Rockets plus 2014 Blues Foundation Award winner Lurrie Bell and his Chicago Blues Band. Guitar legend Jimmie Vaughan, brother of Stevie Ray Vaughan, will return to the festival for his second headline performance. He topped the artist list in 2009. Vaughan is far more than just one of the greatest and most respected guitarists in the world of popular music. Since releasing his first solo album in 1994, he has set the standard for quality modern roots music. Jimmie’s band features Texas singing legend Lou Ann Barton, a founding member of The Fabulous Thunderbirds. Jimmie and Lou Ann’s potent vocal chemistry shines in their music. Yet for all his accomplishments and the admiration he has earned, Jimmie Vaughan remains modest when it comes to his life and work. “I’m just trying to have fun like everyone else,” he concludes. “I’ve been playing since I was 13. I play every day. I’ve never stopped. I can’t imagine that I could exist without it.” Rick Derringer has had a prolific music career that began at the age of 17 when his band, The McCoys, had a number one hit single with “Hang on Sloopy.” A long-time member of Johnny Winters’ band in the 1970’s, Rick’s solo career began with a bang when his single “Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo” reached hit status in 1973. Derringer’s career has been a long journey of successes as a Grammy Award winning producer, songwriter, and player. In 2009, Rick released a display of blues talent on “Knighted by the Blues,” featuring wife Jenda as co-writer on several songs. In 2010, Rick released an amazing compilation of Freddie, Albert and B.B. King on “The Three Kings of the Blues.” The depth and breadth of the musical talent the festival is bringing to Longview spans the blues music genre. In addition to Derringer, Vaughan, Bell and Funderburgh, also appearing will be The Stratoblasters & Jimmie Wallace, Eddy “The Chief” Clearwater, Kenny “Blues Boss” Wayne, Cool John Ferguson, Texas Flood, Trudy Lynn

President Nick Emiliani says “We are very pleased with how the lineup has come into place, with the proper blend of styles, from traditional blues onward, that will appeal to a broad audience. And we will have a number of young performers, like the Petersons, Lenius and Davidson, who are carrying on the blues tradition.” The festival which is named for Linden native and blues icon T-Bone Walker has previously been held in Linden, Texas, Walker’s hometown. Early this year the festival’s governing board began seeking a location with a larger venue that would allow expansion of the festival beyond the 400 seat Music City Texas auditorium in Linden. Longview’s Maude Cobb Convention and Activity Complex was selected as the home late in January. Festival Executive Director Rick Howell says, “We think that our partnership with the City of Longview and having the larger convention center available will allow us to take the festival to the next higher level, something it really deserves.” In addition to an indoor stage at the 40,000 square-foot Maude Cobb Convention Center, which will seat 2500 fans, the festival will include an outdoor stage with lawn chair seating on the grassy field of the complex. A Saturday car show on the festival grounds is also being planned, along with food vendors for both Friday and Saturday. Advance ticket sales are on sale now on the festival website at www.tbonewalkerbluesfest.com. Information on the performers is available on the website or by following the event on Facebook. get any worse—until the arrival of James Simon, his new co-worker. James is both Simon’s exact physical double and his opposite - confident, charismatic and seductive with women. To Simon’s horror, James slowly starts taking over his life. Future concerts and films will be scheduled each month from September through May and can be found online at the website at www.theoldfirehouse.net. On October 11th, the audience will screen “Travelling Salesman,” a cerebral thriller about four mathematicians who solve the most powerful problem in computer science history. On October 25th, The Old Firehouse welcomes the return of Andy Gullahorn who has been described as one of the “very few writers who can
create songs that are hilarious, inspiring, happy and sad - sometimes all at once.” Admission prices for concerts is $12 in advance and $15 and the door, and films range between $8-$10. All events are on Saturday evenings, with concerts beginning at 7:30pm and movies at 7pm. The Old Firehouse is an intimate, smoke-free and alcohol-free “coffeehouse” which has made a name for itself by bringing national folk musicians and their all-original music to Edom’s unique listening room and stage. The Old Firehouse Cinema brings monthly, first run independent films to Edom as well. Information about upcoming films, sponsorships, and advertising can be found by calling (903)852-ART1 (2781) or (214)864-8195. Both the concert and film series are labors-oflove by owners Jeff and Judy Gottesman, as they don’t expect to make any kind of profit from these endeavors, however sponsorships of the films and concerts are always appreciated. The Old Firehouse is located at 8241 FM 279 in downtown Edom.

Winners Announced at the September 19th Red-Carpet Event By Amanda Main A red-carpet music awards event that started “accidentally” is entering its third year. East Texas Music Awards creator Nathan Hunnicutt didn’t realize when he put a poll on a Facebook page in 2011 that it would turn into the well-produced event that it’s become. “I have a page on Facebook where I asked, ‘Who’s your favorite rock band?’ and ‘Who’s your favorite country band?’ And there were about 2,000 votes,” Nathan says. “So the next year, I decided to do it on purpose and I included 21 categories and we had almost 30,000 votes. The next year I did it again and we had 114,000 votes. It just started getting bigger, but that second year when we had … about 30,000 votes I announced, ‘Hey, we’re gonna have a live music awards event,’ because I thought with that many people voting, people would come to it and it’d be good, and it was.” Nathan, who lives in Tennessee and in Texas, has a love for music. He has been in a-cappella groups and started playing guitar 19 years ago. As a resident of Jackson, Tennessee, which is between Memphis and Nashville, and which has a music heritage of its own, he works to expand the reach of Texas musicians to the music scene in Tennessee. He says people in Tennessee really seem to love when a Texas group comes through to perform. What makes the ETX Music Awards special is that the winners are truly decided by the fans, as opposed to many national music award ceremonies in which the winners often are bands and musicians who have sold a lot of records.

“The ETX Music Awards is all genres - and when I say all, I mean the kind that may be excluded from certain people’s list of ‘real music,’” Nathan says. “So I appreciate all kinds of different music and the awards kind of gives a neutral ground, a place for everyone to come together and say, ‘Hey, look, here’s my music, what do you think?’ and since it’s 100 percent fan-voted and fan-nominated, it really just opens up the door to legitimacy. “Whereas, in the Top 40, on the radio, like it or not, you can actually pay to be there. And that’s the reality of the music business, but this is just something that’s a little different than the normal. And I think that’s why a lot of people like it. I think that’s why… some people don’t get it, because they think Miranda Lambert should’ve won the country category last year, whereas she hardly got any votes. But the fact is, people in East Texas have their own taste.” “It’s a quick-moving show,” Nathan says. “We do sound checks during the day, so all of the sound is lined up, and when the show comes around, when people hit the stage, they hit it. They get right on the music, and there’s not a lot of wasted time.” Although the event will not be televised live, he says, video will be taken and edited for televising at a later date, including results, winners, highlights and interviews. Having the event filmed is new this year. Also new to the event is that all local media have been invited to cover the ceremony. He says that decision came down to, “does it benefit the artists?” “I’ve had many people tell me the East Texas music scene really seems to be developing over the last few years,” he says “and I like to think the ETX Music Awards has at least played some role in getting the bands, like getting it out there that we actually do have Latin rock bands, that we do have jazz bands that are really good, in addition to country, obviously.” Voting ended in August, and the winners will be announced at the September 19th red-carpet media event at KE Bushman’s Celebration Center in Bullard. It will be held from 7-10pm, with doors opening about 6pm. Musicians picked from the Top 5 in different categories will perform at the event — a minimum of 10 performers will play, Nathan says. Tickets may be purchased online at etxmusic.com/tickets.html. General seats cost $20, and VIP tickets are $35. Emcee’s at the event include third-year Emcee Terry Miller, of the television show “Terry Miller’s Texas,” Andrea Johnson Baros and Sonny James. Nathan would like to thank sponsors: EGuide Magazine, Paradise Vapor, Big P Productionz, XL’N on Fifth, KETK NBC, Fox 51, and Madison Media Associates.

Have You Hugged A Warrior Today?
The 271 Bike Rally Will Definitely Give You the Chance To Do So By Jimmy Arber I would like to tell you about something that should mean so much to us as Americans and Texans. It’s about our military that have fought so bravely for the rights that so many of us take for granted. These same soldiers come back a bit differently than they were when they went to war. Where is our appreciation? Support? Love? Friendship? Have you told one of them ‘Thank You’ lately? We need them and now they need us! The Texas Wounded Warrior events have been created to raise awareness and to enlist the public’s aid for the needs of severely injured service members of the Air Force, Army, Navy, and Marines who have fought and served for us. These brave men have sacrificed physically and emotionally to do a job that doesn’t even pay well. They carry the scars and memories from their battles, yet they would willingly do it again. We take for granted that they are being cared for, but the truth is they aren’t! What about the ones that didn’t come home, those that gave the ultimate sacrifice for us? Don’t you think we owe it to their brothers in arms to make sure they are taken care of? These heros must not be ignored or forgotten. It is our responsibility as Americans to help provide for our soldier’s needs and this is exactly what the Texas Wounded Warrior events help do. They provide unique, direct programs and services to meet the needs of our Warriors. The expenses for these needs are met by contributions from us. How many ball games, concerts, and events did you see this year for hundreds of dollars a seat? By contributing the amount you would pay to attend just one of these events, you could help a hero pay for his medicine - what a difference that would make for that person. The Texas Wounded Warrior fund operates as a nonprofit 501(c) (3) organization which makes all contributions tax deductible. It helps family members of veterans that are unable to support their family due to an injury sustained by war. It helps wounded soldiers to be the most successful and well adjusted they can be again. There are over 40,000 registered members defined as family caregivers of a wounded soldier. It has taken over $115 million dollars in programs to support these families. It also has provided over $800,000 in the form of college scholarships which has helped veterans transition to college and the workplace. You want to know one way that you can help? I recently had the pleasure to work with some event organizers for this program. One way that you can help these soldiers is by attending the 271 Bike Rally in Tyler, September 12th-14th. Are you scared of bikers? Did you know bikers are the biggest supporters of this program? Have you ever taken the opportunity to talk

with a biker? Did you know they are made up of people just like you and me? They just love to ride motorcycles. Yes, preachers, politicians, doctors, lawyers, mechanics, oil men, welders, construction workers, business owners, and even soldiers. All types of people are bikers. They are normal law abiding citizens just like you and me. Yes, they get a bad rap because a lot of times the good guys get lumped in with the bad guys. You’ll find that people from all walks of life, not just bikers, will also be at this event. This will give you the opportunity to meet some bikers and find out how friendly they are. I sat down with Robert “Rooster” Eckeberge, one of the promoters for 271 Bike Rally event that will be benefiting the Texas Wounded Warriors (www.txwoundedwarrior.com). By the way, “Rooster” Eckeberge is also a Shriner and you will not make a better friend than him. He is a friend and a brother to so many people including me. We met at the Cattle Barons Gala and talked about the Rally which is to promote fun, friendship, and also a great cause. In addition to The Traveling Veteran Wall that is being brought out to the location so people can pay respects to those who have sacrificed so much for this country, the event will also have other fun activities like eleven live bands, a Poker Run, Best Bike Contest, Burn Out Contest, Tattoo Contest, Bikini Contest and many other games and entertainment. RV & Tent Camping will be available too. Robin “Boogie” Butt of Boogie Butt Productions (boogiebutt.com) will be the Emcee of Ceremonies for the event and will introduce the bands, some of which are:

To Do Rocket Fizz:
If You’re 4 or 94, This is a Nostalgic Trip to the Candy Shop By Barbara King You’re probably familiar with the old adage about being as happy as a kid in a candy shop? Steve Farmer is literally living that dream in his own weird and wacky candy playground. Get ready for sensory overload when you walk into the Rocket Fizz store and an experience sure to be a blast from the past. The sights, sounds, smells and tastes are just the beginning of a nostalgic glimpse back to a simpler time. From the largest salt water taffy wall, to the over 500 flavors of soda to the nostalgic tin signs, Rocket Fizz is a shopping experience like no other. Steve Farmer is the owner/mastermind behind the store, recently celebrating it’s first year of business. The Rocket Fizz phenomenon began with two partners in 2007 in Camarillo, California, and has careened into 52 franchises in 11 States. Farmer himself is in the process of opening another store in Frisco, hopefully by the end of August. Located on S. Broadway in Tyler, Farmer states that, “Our store is a feel good, nostalgic trip down memory lane,” as we stroll around the store examining everything from candy cigarettes to a rack full of bacon flavored candies, band aids, and even bacon lip balm. Farmer describes it as a “dirt floor store” and it has a really down-home nostalgic flavor. One entire wall is lined with coolers, displaying over 500 different sodas from all over the world, including Britain, Japan, China, and Australia. These are old fashioned, craft sodas made from pure cane sugar in 12 and 16 ounce glass bottles. “I want folks to have a fun, jaw-dropping experience, different from the typical big box store shopping trip,” he says. Stroll over to the other side of the store (all the while surrounded by great tunes from past decades) and help yourself to a piece of fresh saltwater taffy. You can fill a bag to the brim for $5 or $7 with tantalizing flavors like apricot, blueberry muffin, key lime, and cotton candy. Farmer says the average purchase in the store is about $12 but you can walk out a happy camper with taffy or a sucker for around a dollar. “It’s about having an adventure and experiencing something new,” explains Farmer. “Our staff is all about asking leading questions… ‘do you like sweet or sour, what is your favorite flavor?’ We may open a root beer from England for you to try or a new Japanese chocolate that’s just arrived on the shelves.” Don’t be afraid to indulge your crazy, wacky or inner nerd side. Rocket Fizz is home to the most bizarre gag gifts, including squirrel underpants, horse masks, grow a pony and those ‘throw back’ whoopee cushions and rubber chickens. The store’s own infamous spokesanimal, Staaanley, is a horse puppet featured on Facebook and videos. But the selection doesn’t stop there. Lunch boxes, action figures, concert posters, finger puppets, masks, hats, coasters, clocks, and tin signs featuring old movies and stars like John Wayne and Marilyn Monroe line every free space in the store. Looking for a unique but scrumptious gift? Let Rocket Fizz know your price point and they will create a soda/candy masterpiece based on your favorite flavors. You will never see another gift basket quite like these, and they can be special ordered for corporate gifts, birthdays, weddings or anything else you can come up with! Specify for a boy/girl, age or theme, and they will create something spectacular. Farmer has the freedom to order product to his heart’s delight, so every week is a new adventure in candyland. Cacy Legnion, a cameraman at KLTV, is a dedicated patron, dropping in weekly to see what’s new. “It’s a great, fun atmosphere and I love to wander around after work, have a soda and check everything out.” Farmer is an entrepreneur with a heart for the community. He has opened the store’s door to host fundraising events for charities like the
Tyler Tigers, a women’s baseball team whose blind players hit a ‘beeping ball.’ “One of the reasons I chose Tyler for the store is the opportunity to make an impact, give back and actually make a difference,” explains Farmer. Farmer also features and supports local talent on the patio. Of course, the store is decked out and offers specials for holidays, especially Halloween and Christmas. Valentino Hampton, originally from New Orleans and who works at Suddenlink, is also a weekly visitor saying, “It’s the only time I will drink soda, because I know the quality and selection is the best. It’s an old fashioned soda shop with something new to see and taste every time I come in.” The store is a family affair, with Farmer’s parents helping out too. His mother, Laura, handles media relations and father, Bill, helps with stocking and everything else that needs to be done with product. Tyler’s one stop soda and candy shop will officially celebrate it’s first year of business with a bang on September 6th with live bands on the patio, food vendors and of course, soda and candy samples! Farmer’s dream of owning the biggest, baddest candy and soda shop in East Texas is a reality. “It’s all about seeing the astonishment on their faces as they come in, and their smiles when they leave that makes it all worthwhile,” Farmer says. You’ll find yourself literally wandering around the store saying, “Oh my gosh, do you remember candy necklaces, or Double Bubble chewing gum or candy cigarettes…” If you’re 4 or 94, visit Rocket Fizz for a nostalgic trip to the candy shop and leave with a grin and some candy in your pocket! A Girls Night Out:
The Children’s Advocacy Center of Smith County’s Inaugural Bling-O Event By Lynn Dark Ladies looking to have a great time while contributing to a very worthy cause should check out the Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) of Smith County’s first annual Bling-O event at KE Bushman’s Celebration Center on September 9th. CAC’s Lani Reeves was kind enough to sit down with me to discuss the particulars. The event’s theme is Girl’s Night Out. Food (heavy hors d’oeuvres) and non-alcoholic drinks will be provided. There will also be a cash bar. KE Bushman’s Winery and Celebration Center will provide the catering. It promises to be fun-filled event. Approximately 300-400 ladies are expected to attend this year’s event. Attire is casual, so people should feel comfortable coming from work, or dressed in jeans. The party starts at 6:30pm and is expected to last until 10pm. Bling-O means what you probably think it means – bingo for bling. There will be 20 games of bingo with a designer purse prize awarded after each game. Designers include Coach, Michael Kors, Kate Spade, Dooney & Bourke, and others. The Presenting Sponsor of Bling-O, and the Bids for Kids online auction (more on this to follow) is WRL General Contractors. W.R. “Bob” Leavine is the President and owner of the company and is committed to partnering with CAC to help children in the community. Chris Abraham will be the emcee for the evening’s festivities. I had the opportunity to talk with Chris about the APEX Theatre 20 a couple of months ago. I can promise you that if you don’t already know him, you will adore Chris after attending this event. Each table at this event will seat 10 people and if you have a large group, entire tables can be reserved for $1,000 per table. While that route is a little more expensive, it guarantees that you and your friends can sit together. Standard three grid bingo cards for each game are included in the $40 ticket price. Extra cards will be available for purchase. Tickets can be purchased in advance by calling Lani Reeves at (903)533-1880, or visit their website at www.cacBling-Oandbids.com. A silent auction for several luxury items will take place during the evening. Items available for bid include wine glasses, several autographed books by Max Lucado, Consuelo totes donated by Cavender’s, purses donated by Bridgette’s, items from Ramsey Fritz Jewels, Apricot Lane, Tyler Museum of Art, and more. Articles for the silent auction are still being collected at this time. The silent auction will kick off CAC’s annual Bids for Kids fundraiser. This will be the 15th year of Bids for Kids, which is a 10-day online auction. In addition to the bingo games and the silent auction, there will be raffle items and gift boxes to be purchased with a chance to win what is inside. There will also be a photo booth so attendees can take home memories of this special night. Tables will be decorated by different companies and individuals, so that each table will have a different theme. Each table will be judged at the event and a prize will be awarded for the best decorated table. The KE Bushman’s Celebration Center was selected as the venue for several reasons. It can readily accommodate the crowd, provide catering, and comes with the large tables and cushioned chairs. KE Bushman’s is located at 1565 FM 2493 just south of Bullard. From Tyler, go south on Highway 69 and take a left on FM 2493. (If you come to Dixie Wine Company on Hwy. 69, you’ve gone too far.) The winery and celebration center will be on the left. The Children’s Advocacy Center of Smith County’s mission is to reduce to the trauma suffered by children who are victims of physical and sexual abuse. They provide the first step in the investigation process of these types of cases which are referred to CAC by law enforcement and Child Protective Services. The children come to CAC for an initial forensic interview. The interview is provided to the DA’s office, law enforcement, and Child Protective Services to begin building their cases. The child victims and their families can continue to come to CAC’s child-friendly environment to receive therapy free of charge. The goal is to reduce the stress and trauma suffered by the victims and their families after their ordeal. They provide court training to help children prepare for the ordeal of facing their abuser in court.
The children receive therapy until they are able to tell their story without breaking down. In other words, until they can talk about what happened to them without reliving it every time. Very often, the perpetrator is someone that the child knows. It may be an immediate family member, another relative, a family friend, etc. In many cases it is necessary for the perpetrator to be removed from the home. This may leave the remaining family members without an income. CAC helps them begin the process of getting assistance, whether it’s Medicaid, Food
Stamps, etc. CAC also has something they call their Rainbow Room. They provide things like diapers, wipes, clothes, car seats, and many other items to these families free of charge. The goal is to assist them as much as possible in getting back on their feet. CAC is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization. They are sustained through private donations, as well as some government grants and funding and assist children through the age of 17, seeing an
average of 600 children each year. The Children’s Advocacy Center also works with Biker’s Against Child Abuse (BACA), who provide encouragement and protection to affected children. The money raised during fundraisers, including Bling-O and Bids for Kids, will go towards providing services to victims, as well as community education programs. There are educational programs for small children, high school children, educators, and childcare workers. The Children’s Advocacy Center also does two annual appeals for donations, one in the spring, and one in the fall. Both campaigns are done by mail. For more information about CAC, the BlingO event, or other ways to help, you can visit their website at www.cacsmithcounty.org, or call them at (903)533-1880. Dana Bowman is a double amputee. He lost his legs in an accident during the annual Golden Knights training in Yuma, Arizona, in 1994. On February 6,1994, Bowman gained worldwide attention when he and his teammate Sgt. Jose Aguillon collided in midair during the team’s annual training. Bowman and Aguillon were practicing a maneuver known as the Diamond Track. The maneuver calls for the jumpers to streak away from each other for about a mile and then turn 180 degrees and fly back toward each other crisscrossing in the sky. Bowman and Aguillon had
demonstrated the Diamond Track more than fifty times without a mistake, but this time was different. Rather than crisscrossing, the two skydivers slammed into each other at a combined speed of 300 miles per hour. Aguillon died instantly. Bowman’s legs were severed from his body, one above the knee and one below the knee. Bowman’s parachute opened on impact. Nine months later, he turned this tragedy into a triumph when he became the first double amputee to re-enlist in the United States Army. Bowman re-enlisted in the United States Army airborne style, skydiving with his commander into the ceremony, making his dream a reality. This will take place at Liberty Hall, 103 E. Art Inside the Artist’s Studio:
Dana Cargile By A. C. Slaughter
Alright ladies hike up your skirts and show some ankle ‘cause this month’s artist is all femme! A southern belle who paints like a lady, markets herself like a pro and smiles all the way to the bank. Red headed and full of sweetness, Ms. Dana Cargile is making moves and making history right here in lil’ ol’ Tyler, Texas. Dana and her family moved here five years ago from Jackson, Mississippi and she dove right in. Helping to grow the art scene in East Texas, Dana has been on the board of the Heart of Tyler for five years. She immediately started showing with Gallery Main Street when they first opened and since then has shown at 8th Street Boutique, Larry Lotts Interiors, Regions Bank downtown, Gold Leaf Gallery, Salon Verve, and has participated in the downtown ArtWalk every year it has been put on. For the last six years she and her dear friend, Cherie, share a booth at a show called “Handworks” in Jackson, Mississippi where they have built quite a following. This past holiday season Dana participated in Mistletoe and Magic, one of Tyler’s best known holiday extravaganzas. Dana says she intends to do the show again this year. “It’s a labor of love,” she says about her painting. Doing all these shows takes time. “When do you have time to paint?” I ask, and Dana laughs. “I am out here [in her studio] all day Tuesday and Thursday and Monday, Wednesday, Friday afternoons.” With three boys and a husband it is amazing that she is able to do what she does. “Sometimes I forget to do the wash,” she says but I think that is a small sacrifice for such a successful body of work. So let’s talk about the work ….. Dana’s loose, fun, child-like style has roots in realism. Her bright colors and bold brush work is a treat for your inner happy place. You can see her background in realism in her genre pieces. “I started painting when I was little. My grandmother always painted.” Much like many artists, Dana’s parents did not encourage her painting. They wanted her to pursue a career in business or something that she could support herself with. So Dana got her degree in fashion merchandising. It was a compromise between business and art. Not ever really doing anything with her degree and having a strong desire to do what she pleased regardless of who or who didn’t support her, Dana continued to paint for her own sake. Twelve years ago she and her family moved to Jackson, Mississippi where, for the first time, Dana found her support. She joined an art guild. Hosted by some of the elders in town, she met Cherie, who sits in a rocker in the corner of Dana’s studio chiming in while we do the interview. They both had children the same age and because they were younger than most of the other members, the two belles quickly became friends. “You had to be tough as nails,” Dana recalls. The group met once a week and held critiques. “You could paint whatever you wanted and sometimes we would watch videos and have a discussion. They [group members] were very helpful.” Much like a classroom environment Dana found a place where she could paint what was on her heart and then have it drug through the dirt by many discerning eyes. This builds character. If you have ever been in a critique situation, you know. It hurts when you first hear that someone doesn’t like your piece, or aspects of your piece, but you get over that soon enough and if you don’t, you quit. But when they DO like your work, you may find yourself on cloud nine for days to come. After having been through tough critiques, Dana and Cherie felt it was time to start doing art shows, sharing booth rentals and finding their niche in the Jackson art scene. Their success was quick to come and continues to build to this day. Even distance can’t tear these two apart. In 2009 Dana and her family moved to East Texas just in time to get in on the ground floor of all the new art happenings in Tyler. Dana immediately started having success here in Tyler. She started receiving commissions from shows, then shows from commissions.
People see her work, like her style and ask her to paint something for them. Starting out in realism Dana painted, “A lot of landscapes. The more you paint the more your style changes. My style kept getting looser and looser.” Then Dana took a portrait class. “Once you can do people you can do animals. People love cows and pigs here in Tyler!” In addition to Dana’s local success she has been asked to paint images for a website that sells images to churches for church bulletins. Additionally, she was asked to paint the poster image for the 26th annual Festival on the Square and she has also illustrated a children’s book titled “Pet Fairy” written by Christie Joy. All of Dana’s success can be directly attributed to hard work and a good attitude. People love to buy art from people they love and Dana is a lovable Southern gal. Did I mention her studio is called the “Doll House” and rightly named? While interviewing Dana at the “Doll House” we had tea service in porcelain tea cups served alongside dainty tea cookies. The southern charm just does not stop and neither does the femininity. There are dolls all around the studio as well as paints, brushes, rocking chairs and lots of windows bringing in all the good ol’ East Texas light. There’s even a fireplace. Dana’s studio is inviting, comfortable, eclectic and beautiful. It’s in her own backyard, separate from all her boys, a special place just for her and the gals. Dana is what all artists aspire to be and few ever accomplish – she
is a true working artist. How does one become such a thing you ask? “You learn from every painting. You keep learning, and you keep learning, no matter how old you are.” So there you have it. To all of you who are struggling, deep in the throws of being an artist, take a lesson from an angel of wisdom and work hard, keep at it, market your work and believe in yourself. Because believing in yourself in the key. If you don’t believe in yourself no one else will and you must believe that what you are doing is unique and special and that it is the right thing to do. There is no substitute for good mojo. Dana’s work can be found online at “MyBackPorch” on Facebook, danacargile.blogsot.com, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram and now on Etsy. It has only been in the past five years that Dana has promoted herself online. “It works,” she says. “It’s the modern world. I had a lady in Austin who I’ve never met see a piece she liked and wanted one similar, so now I am painting one for her.” Well that’s it for September’s issue of Inside the Artist’s Studio. Remember to send us artists that you like and would like to see featured in Inside the Artist’s Studio to eguidemagazine@gmail.com. Now it’s back to my studio to work…’cause art just doesn’t come out of the blue, you have to work for it, and work hard. Stay classy East Texas and until next month, MAKE ART!

September Art Show:
A Collaboration of Creativity and Charity By Barbara King We all know that our weekends end up crammed with family obligations and errands that we never manage to get accomplished during the week. But if you happen to be in the Tyler area, you should squeeze in some much needed down time and wander into Cork Food and Drink restaurant on the evening of September 6th between 7 and 9pm. Something completely new and innovative will be happening - an art show featuring three female artists whose pieces compliment and balance each other. This show, grown from the creative mastermind of local artist Amanda Slaughter, will feature over 20 pieces of framed art on canvas, strikingly displayed throughout the restaurant. “The real goal of the show will be for everyone who attends to have a new experience of some sort,” explains Slaughter. “Whether or not they’ve ever been to an art show before, they can come and meet new people, see new artwork, and learn something new about art; if they come away with a new awareness, that would define success.” Billed as “The September Art Show” it will encompass the entire restaurant plus some works will be displayed outside in the front courtyard as patrons enter the restaurant. Don’t worry, there will still be full dining and bar service as you wander and view the pieces. The artists will be on hand to answer questions; ambience music provided by the local favorite duo, The Magills. Cork will also be concocting and serving specialty cocktails for $5, named in honor of the three contributing artists. Framed artwork will range anywhere from $50 to $1200 with all prices at the discretion of the specific artist. For a sneak peek, the art is now available for viewing at the restaurant and many new pieces will be added the evening of the event. The art will be easily accessible to view with each guest given a sheet of information corresponding to the numbered pieces available. Slaughter describes the show as “colorful, youthful, abstracts, really vibrant fun art. Nothing too serious. Ballerinas, bunnies and bicycles! However, it is a well-thought out, classy and professional show as well,” explains Slaughter. Slaughter herself has lived the true artist’s life, painting and living in New York, New Orleans and Austin, returning to Tyler to hear the crickets, teach art at Tyler Junior College, cycle, and of course, create. One of Slaughter’s series “Bicycles” pays tribute to and echoes her love of the joy and freedom of cycling, with contemporary pieces including “Urban Ride,” “Desert Ride,” (pictured) and “City Ride.” “I have literally paid my dues, staging art shows in empty houses, parking lots and fields,” says Slaughter. “There is nothing in the world like the freedom to create on a blank canvas and make your mark.” For a look at Slaughter’s art go to www.AmandaSlaughter.com. The second artist on display is Sonia Semone, viewed by Slaughter as the “Queen Bee” of the show. She has a dedicated online following and is a well-known artist in Dallas and Fort Worth. Simone’s works are strong, vibrant abstracts of design and color. If you’d like, take a look at Semone’s portfolio at www.SoniaSemone.com before the show. Rounding out the show is Latvian-born Dace Lucia Kidd, whose works have graced group shows and galleries in Bulgaria, Finland, Miami, New York, MAC (McKinney Avenue Contemporary) in Dallas and is always a popular addition to many walls and galleries right here in Tyler. Kidd believes strongly that art should be shown and shared, and her obvious talents will be on display throughout

the restaurant. Kidd’s beautiful work is found at www.DaceLuciaKidd.com. Although Slaughter views the current Tyler art scene as “growing by leaps and bounds,” more and more local restaurants are supporting and showcasing local artists. Cork’s commitment to the art scene is a rotating series of works that changes every three months. Her Slaughterhouse Production team has all the elements in place for a top notch evening, from the installation of the art, to fast and efficient payment methods so you can leave with your newly acquired treasure in your hands. The art show has yet another very important component. A portion of the proceeds from the evening will benefit the Children’s Advocacy Center of Smith County, a local non-profit benefiting child victims of physical and sexual abuse. The Center strives to reduce the trauma of the criminal justice system and provide families with support and resources. “We have all been blessed with so much,” said Slaughter. “For me, as a new parent, helping these children cope with trauma hit a personal chord with me. We will have a speaker from the Center on hand the evening of the show and additional materials about the great work the Advocacy Center does in our community will be available. This art show is definitely a win/win event,” explains Slaughter. “The artists get exposure while at the same time, educating and contributing toward a much needed service in our community. It may be the first time someone is made aware of the Advocacy Center, or someone may know a child in need of just that place… that would be an incredible bonus.” Slaughter envisions this to be the first of many shows to follow, showcasing another group of talented artists. “I see the Cork show as a big party, featuring great stuff by three rock star artists who want to share the joy of art,” sums up Slaughter. “So if you come out, you get to support local art plus help a good cause. There’s nothing better in my book!” Slaughter enthusiastically comments. For more information about the show, please call (903)941-3253. “Taste of Art: Villa Montez:”
An Interview with Matthew Martin and Leigha Sherman By Cassie Zemer Artists Nation is pleased to announce “Taste of Art: Villa Montez,” a prestigious exhibit featuring never-before-seen artwork by some of the top locally renowned artists. More than 30 pieces of art will be highlighted in the luxurious atmosphere of Villa Montez in Tyler. You will be able to experience a highend, lavish gallery setting, complete with appointed sales representatives and combined with the leisure of Tyler. We would be pleased to have you join us on Thursday, September 28th from 5-8pm for the first “Taste of Art: Villa Montez.” Dinner reservations will be available after the event if you wish to enjoy the delicious cuisine of Villa Montez. To answer a few questions about the event and the mission of Artists Nation, I interviewed Matthew Martin, the Founder of the non-profit organization, and Leigha Sherman, Assistant Curator for the “Taste of Art: Villa Montez” exhibit.
Cassie: Tell us a little about Artists Nation.
Matthew: It’s pretty obvious that the Tyler art scene is growing, explosively. We have experienced a huge number of artists and organizations uniting and working together, resulting in unique original artwork by local artists being presented in an awesome way. One of the main missions of Artists Nation is to encourage local artists and to help them find potential supporters and collectors. We strive to promote events that bring the two together - to present the people of East Texas with the opportunity to buy original artwork, opposed to commercialized prints that are available at any department store.
Cassie: So, you’re bringing artists and collectors together, that’s really great news. You mentioned promoting events. What type of events?
Leigha: We produce a lot of events, everything from high-end events like this to classes at Epiphany Learning Hub, to laid back events like Drink and Draw and Tyler Spoken Word, as well as huge festivals, like the recent East Texas All Star Showcase. We are even planning a two day Holiday Art Market for this fall; it’ll be just in time for Christmas shopping. Matthew: We’re always interested in new partnerships and ideas for events that fit within our scope to bring artists and the community together.
Cassie: Sounds like that’s how the idea for ‘Taste of Art’ started, right?
Matthew: That’s right, Cassie. We wanted to create an opportunity for artists to have their work installed in a luxurious gallery setting. However, doing this in Tyler is a little tricky; it required some pretty creative thinking on our part. Tyler is limited on available spaces where we can exhibit artist’s work. Leigha: So, by partnering with Villa Montez, we are creating the solution for two felt needs in the Tyler area: a beautiful gallery experience where artists may exhibit and sell their work and two, an opportunity to support local businesses while expanding the visual art scene and exposing the public to more art.
Cassie: That makes perfect sense. So, artists display their work, and hope they can make contact with a collector all in one night?
Matthew: Not exactly. We always strive to help our artists as much as we can, so what makes the ‘Taste of Art’ exhibit different is that Artists Nation will have dedicated sales professionals there to answer questions about the artwork, talk about the artist’s career, and also broker the transaction so they may enjoy the beauty of the work(s) in their own home.
Cassie: That’s a wonderful idea. So how long will this exhibit be available to the public?
Leigha: Yes it is a great idea. The opening reception for ‘Taste of Art’ will be on September 28th from 5-8pm. The exhibit will remain on display through December, opening the door to a great opportunity for artists and collectors to connect.
Celebration of Peace Week Throughout Tyler By Gini Rainey
“Peace: - noun, freedom from disturbance; quiet and tranquility; freedom from or the cessation of war or violence; a ceremonial handshake or kiss exchanged during a service in some churches.” One of the things most people in unification hunger for is peace and Tyler will help to bring awareness to the need of peace in our society via the 4th annual Peace Festival. The 2014 Art of Peace Festival in Tyler is a week-long celebration of the United Nations International Day of Peace, with arts-based events that promote the values of Compassion, Creativity and Community. Each year the Art of Peace Festival Tyler selects a community organization to showcase and support and this is year is no exception. This year’s Festival honoree is the East Texas Food Bank. The 2014 visual art show, themed “Hunger for Peace” will be presented in partnership with the Tyler Museum of Art during Peace Week. Juried art in response to the theme will be displayed during the week of the festival. Reaching for Peace on all levels, the week-long festival begins on Saturday, September 13th at 1pm with the unveiling of a brand new mural that was designed by local muralist and artist Kerian Massey and executed by a group of local artists. “Peace Through Discovery” has become a permanent addition to the south exterior wall of the Discovery Science Place, 208 North Broadway in Tyler. The Peace Meal is designed to be an unusual dining experience; one from which you come away with new insights because you have encountered both old and new friends in a special way. Tuesday-Sunday, September 16th-24th, the Tyler Museum of Art will be hosting the Peace Art Exhibit, an exciting exhibit feature 20 artists displaying their artwork. Tuesday evening at 5:30pm, a Peace Forum, in partnership with Tyler Together Race Relations, will provide the opportunity to discuss Personal Peacemaking. Additionally, on Friday between 5pm and 6pm a special Local Love Cash Mob will be held at ‘Come Together Trading’ in Bergfeld Center. This is a unique store with a global mission that sells fair trade clothing, jewelry, chocolate, coffee, gifts, and so much more. Sunday, September 21st, at 11am, a community Art of Peace worship service will be held at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship on Old Omen Road. The Peace-themed worship service will be lead by Dennis Cullinane, director of the East Texas Food Bank, Rabbi Neal Katz, and Anne McCrady. The community is invited to attend. Additionally, on Sunday, a Harry Chapin Tribute Concert will be presented at Liberty Hall in downtown Tyler. It begins at 7pm and will feature local musicians performing the music of Harry Chapin, a musician/activist/hero/poet who wrote some of the most iconic songs of the 1970’s (“Cat’s in the Cradle”) and launched a one-man activist campaign to make hunger relief a concern of priority. Local musicians Randy Brown, Neal Katz, and others will honor Chapin’s memory through song and activism. Proceeds from this event will help to support the mission of the East Texas Food Bank. September 5th-7th and September 11th-14th - “Harvey” opens at the Tyler Civic Theatre with Thursday-Saturday performances at 7:30pm and Sunday matinees at 2:30pm. “Harvey” is a 1944 play by the American playwright Mary Chase. Chase received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for the work in 1945. It has been adapted for film and television several times, most notably in a 1950 film starring James Stewart. Elwood P. Dowd is an affable man who claims to have an unseen (a presumably imaginary) friend Harvey — whom Elwood describes as a six-foot, three-and-one-half-inch tall pooka resembling an anthropomorphic rabbit. Elwood introduces Harvey to everyone he meets. His social-climbing sister, Veta, increasingly finds his eccentric behavior embarrassing. She decides to have him committed to a sanitarium to spare her and her daughter Myrtle Mae from future embarrassment. When they arrive at the sanitarium, a comedy of errors ensues. The young, handsome, and very flirtatious Dr. Sanderson commits Veta instead of Elwood, but when the truth comes out, the search is on for Elwood and his invisible companion. When Elwood shows up at the sanitarium looking for his lost friend Harvey, it seems that the mild-mannered Elwood’s delusion has had a strange influence on the staff, including sanitarium director Dr. Chumley. Only just before Elwood is to be given an injection that will make him into a “perfectly normal human being, does Veta realize that she’d rather have Elwood the same as he’s always been — carefree and kind — even if it means living with Harvey. This play takes place in September “and there was a town and there was a circus and there was a railroad and there was a man with red hair and there was an elephant.” “Elephant’s Graveyard” is the true tale of the tragic collision of a struggling circus and a tiny town in Tennessee, which resulted in the only known lynching of an elephant. Set in September of 1916, the play combines historical fact and legend, exploring the deep-seated American craving for spectacle, violence and revenge. “The script is, like the best art, microscopically specific with echoes that radiate outward across time. It conjures a world with its own atmosphere and terrible internal logic. It’s mesmerizing... symphonic in its emotional variations on a tragic theme. “Elephant’s Graveyard” buzzes with truth about the consequences of misunderstanding, the invisible but enormous gap between artists and their audiences, and the infernal beauty of vaudeville.” - stated “The Stranger,” Seattle. Henderson Civic Theatre is located at 122 E. Main St. in Henderson. For information call (903)657-2968 or www.hctonline.org. September 26th-28th and October 3rd-5th - “Skin Deep” will be on stage at Lindale Community Theatre in Lindale at 7:30pm Fridays and Saturdays and 2pm on Sundays for matinees. “Skin Deep,” a comedy about two mid-life sisters who are polar opposites, is by playwright Jon Lonoff. Maureen is the younger, homelier, single and overweight sister. Sheila is the elder, gorgeous, married sister. Yet they both have their crutches - Maureen uses humor, and Sheila uses plastic surgery. The two are quite a hysterical pair onstage; one talking proudly of her surgical enhancements, the other boasting of her midnight snacks. We soon meet Sheila’s husband, one of those middle-aged men whose relaxed attractiveness makes you instantly like him. Yes, Sheila is trying to keep him interested and entertained with all her surgery, but it quickly becomes obvious that this is not needed, Squire loves Sheila as she is. There is some odd sister-in-law friction between Maureen and him though it is unclear, and her uncharacteristic sexual jokes leave an uncomfortable feeling onstage and throughout the house. The plot progresses through Sheila’s setting Maureen up on a blind date - an oddly successful one at that! Renowned first as a novel, and then as a prize-winning motion picture, the story of the Joad family and their flight from the dust bowl of Oklahoma is familiar to all. Desperately proud, but reduced to poverty by the loss of their farm, the Joads pile their few possessions on a battered old truck and head west for California, hoping to find work and a better life. Led by the indomitable Ma Joad, who is determined to keep the family together at any cost, and by the volatile young Tom Joad, an ex-convict who grows increasingly impatient with the intolerance and exploitation that they encounter on their trek, the Joads must deal with death and terrible deprivation before reaching their destination where their waning hopes are dealt a final blow by the stark realities of the Great Depression. And yet, despite the anguish and suffering that it depicts, the play becomes in the final essence a soaring and deeply moving affirmation of the indomitability of the human spirit and of the essential goodness and strength that—then as now—reside in the hearts and minds of the “common man,” throughout the world.
