“
From the first time I stepped on the OT floor, I could tell how much the department cared about its students and their success. The faculty’s goal is to prepare us to not only be skilled, knowledgeable practitioners, but also to be critical thinkers and creative problem solvers.

skilled occupational therapy practitioners who will become leaders in the profession. Students learn how to integrate theory, research and practice in a wide variety of settings, and are prepared to engage in ethical, competent and reflective practice. Our graduates are culturally responsive practitioners equipped to meet their clients’ diverse occupational needs. The 23-month, full-time MS program features a variety of innovative courses that emphasize embedded, real-life learning. For example, our three problem-based learning courses use case studies, most of which include video, actual assessment data
information. Such skills are essential in today’s increasingly multidisciplinary health care environment. At UIC, students become part of a learning community, collaborating with faculty, clinicians, and other students to accomplish their educational and career objectives. Students often engage in clinical-and community-based learning experiences and benefit from the rich educational environment that Chicago provides. Many courses include lab sections where skills are practiced under expert supervision. The faculty at UIC includes leaders in the field who are highly regarded nationally and internationally. They are “Creating Tomorrow’s Practice” by anticipating emerging health care needs, leading advances in the profession, and generating new knowledge that will enable our students to shape future practice. The Department of Occupational Therapy at UIC is a stimulating intellectual environment. In addition to the entry-level master’s program, the department offers a post-professional clinical doctorate (OTD); a PhD in Disability Studies and a PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences.
