Project 1 : Minimal Letter Forms
4
Objective:
Select one of the six typefaces. Using the type handout as an underlay for sketching, study each letter in the alphabet to see how much can be subtracted before it loses its unique character and legibility. Do this with upper as well as lower case letters. Use the copy machine to generate additional sizes as needed for your sketches.
5
I did many iterations of minimal letter forms to capture the characteristic features of each letter form.
6
Final Presentation displays the Garamond typeface and with important aspects of the letters g, a, c, and d.
7
Project 2 : Type Hierarchy Studies
8
Objective:
This project uses a provided set of information to explore compositional alternatives. You will begin with one size and weight of Univers, and as the assignment progresses, you will be given addtional elements and variations of type to make the problem more complex. The information we will work with is on the following page. It is a hypothetical lecture series concerning design, product design, and architecture. As you work on various typographic arrangements, you will be expected to learn about the subject; do your research on who these people are, and what their contribtions have been to their respective fields of work.

Set 1A:
One size / one weight 15 pt. Univers 45
For set 1A I wanted to expore a variety of margines,
spacing, and alignment. I also played with turning my grid on axis and using vertical type. The finalpresen-
tation displays 3 colomns with descending horizontal rows.

Set 1B:
One size / two weights 15 pt. Univers 45 and 65
For set 2B I began to play wiith hierarchy through bold text. A realized even if it is at the bottom of the page, but still bold it carried hierarchy. Spacing along with bold type gave me a lot of control over what I wanted to show as important. The final presenation displays text held in tension by being pushed to both sides of the page. Mirrored bold and regular text provide balance to the overall design.

Set 2A:
Two sizes / two weights (15 pt and 9 pt Univers 45 and 65)
In set 2A I began to play with shorten lines of type grouped in various formats. I had fun playing with a center axis and having the text interact on either side of it. For the final presentation I enjoyed balancing the bold on one side with the variety of sizes on the other. The center margins provides visual interest while introducing interesting white space.

Set 2B:
Two sizes / two weights / two styles (15 pt. and 9 pt. Univers 45, 46, 65, 66) use a minimum of two fonts, eg. 15 pt. Univers 45 & 9 pt. Univers 66
For set 2B many of the restrictions were removed, which made this assignemnt more challenging. The one I chose to present had many iterations that could not be balanced until I found this layout. With a strong vertical axis dividing the sheet in 2 I was able to play a balancing act between the heavy and thing text, and large and small. The opposing sides gave a semetry to the design.

Set 3 A:
Two sizes / two weights / two styles (15 pt. and 9 pt. Univers 45, 46, 65, 66) use a minimum of two fonts, eg. 15 pt. Univers 45 & 9 pt. Univers 66. Add Rules Set 3A introduces the use of Rules. I worked with many different types of rules and landed on final presentation becaise it gave a sense of tension and the text seems to be floating in between two heavy barriers.

Set 3 B:
Univers add rules any size, weight & rule Set 3B takes allows one to use all rules, sizes, and weights. It was a fun challenge to design with little restraint. I played with the use of white text and black rules and provided a sense of hierarchy through the use of different sizes and styles of text. I wanted to title to stand out so people understand right away what they are looking at. I felt the speakers were more important than the time and place and chose to show that with larger text.

Project 3 : Book Design
22
Paul Rand, Design and the Play Instinct
Objective:
Using the text and images supplied, develop and utilize a grid system in the layout of in grid system layout a book using the following process. Work only in black, white and grey, plus one spot color if appropriate
23
Process:
24
If the importance of grids was not engrained in my head before this project this one did it. The entire design of the book is based on simple grid patterns. At the start of the project I worked to create an interesting grid with enouch flexibility to use on multiple pages. I learned more than ever, the grid gives your work a pattern to follow so when you look at it as a whole, you see a work that fits together. The grid is not something to be picked and then taken lightly. You must stick to it in every page and line of your book. Do not mistake it as just a suggestion, or your work will begin to look disorganized. I chose a grid that was 4 columns by 5 rows because I felt it gave me the flexibility I needed to complete the book.
25
Color:
I chose a green color because it felt playful and set the tone for a book about play from the very beginning.
Font:
After some debating I decided on Helvetica for my font of choice. I wanted something clean and modern.I also chose it because of the many variations within the font family.

Overall, I am really happy with how my book turned out. I had people flip through the book and the different layouts kept them interested and wanting to see more. It was a rewarding experience to flip the pages in a book that I designed. In the end the grids, colors, font, and images all came together to create a fun design experience.
