Hillel News Students Travel to Washington for AIPAC High School Summit

Five Hillel Upper School students were selected to attend the American Israel Public Affairs Committee High School Summit November 9-11 in Washington, D.C. Students Shira Papir, Aliza Ben-Arie, Avi Gadish, Boris Treskunov and Josh Feigenbaum attended workshops to empower students with essential knowledge, skills and confidence to impact the political process. Upper School Jewish history teacher Yehudis Benhamou was the chaperone. The summit is designed to educate students on the value of the US-Israel relationship, the most effective Israel advocacy skills and how they can be the most effective pro-Israel activists on campus and in the community.

Administrators Attend Bullying Prevention Conference

Middle School Principal Nick Hinrichsen and Dean of Students Charmain Carter attended a Bullying Prevention Conference on November 7 in Miami. The conference is sponsored by the Melissa Institute, which has collaborated with Miami-Dade County Public Schools and community organizations to raise awareness and define bullying and victimization as violence prevention issues for nearly a decade. Florida’s new Safe School Act requires that schools formulate and adopt a policy prohibiting bullying and harassment in schools and on computers by December 1, 2008. Hillel is commited to sustaining a safe and healthy campus for students.

Seniors Build Sukkot, Raise Funds for Class Events

Hillel seniors raised more than $2,000 building Sukkot for families in the community. Senior board member Jonathan Tarich said students supplied all the materials and spent many hours in the hot sun and in Home Depot to build seven Sukkot. The funds raised will go toward senior class events. Students who participated were Brigitte Bakshi, Alan Croitoru, Eliel Epelbaum, Sam Mizraji, Salomon Sterental, Jonathan Tarich and Brandon Zarco. “It was a very rewarding experience to know we helped the Jewish community,” Tarich said.

Chesed Club Collected Thanksgiving Food for Kosher Food Bank

The Lenore and Stanley Weinstein Chesed Club collected canned foods for its November Kosher Food Drive to benefit the Jewish Community Services’ Kosher Food Bank. Dr. Rhea Schwartzberg, club advisor for over 10 years and chair of the Upper School Social Studies Department, said the Kosher Food Bank in North Miami Beach provides Thanksgiving dinner for families and individuals in the community. Lower School Pays Tribute to Veterans Students in Grades 4-5 learned about the nation’s war heroes in honor of Veterans Day. On Veterans Day, November 11, Grade 4 5 students listened to the stories told by veterans, which included Upper School Debate and Health teacher Ben Magidson, who served in Iraq in 20022005, and Upper School Principal Tym Bonilla, who served in the Persian Gulf War and the Marine Corps in 1989-1994. Grade 5 teacher Beverly Silverman said that as part of the History Channel’s Take A Vet To School Day program, she led activities and lesson plans to create awareness about the importance of Veterans Day. Students also watched an ageappropriate video created by the History Channel, showing different wars and describing sacrifices made by war veterans. “The purpose is to teach students an appreciation of the true heroes in our country,” Silverman explained.

Hillel hosted the first Israel Gap Year College Fair in October, inviting families and students from all over South Florida to learn about Israel programs offered after graduation. The evening brought families with juniors and seniors together with representatives from Young Judea, MASA Israel Journey, Tel Aviv University, Hebrew University and Yeshiva University. The Web site, said art tecaher Anat Agam, showcases the talent of students in her art classes. “The whole idea to publish our school in the Web site was motivation and inspiration for my students, encouraging them to participate in competitions,” she said. Middle School Students Selected to Duke Talent Program Nearly 30 students in Grade 7 were selected to participate in the Duke Talent Identification Program (TIP). The program identifies academically talented Grade 7 students who have scored in the 95 percentile or higher on the national norms of a grade-level standardized achievement. The selected students are invited to complete either the SAT Reasoning Test or the ACT Assessment college entrance examination. Since 1980, the Duke TIP has been a world leader in identifying academically talented students and providing innovative programs to support the development of their optimal potential. HIP/PTA generously purchased 20 digital cameras for the Lower School, along with a state-of-the-art camera for the schoolwide student newspaper. HIP/PTA President Amy Chafetz said they sponsored the first dinner for the varsity football team, honey and apple cakes for the Hillel faculty for Rosh Hashanah, and are in the process of getting four Smart Boards and two LCD overhead projectors for the Middle School and two for the Upper School. The HIP/PTA Annual Book Fair was a big success! The expanded Book Fair featured books for students of all ages along with a family night. Chairing the event were Inbal Vainstein, Jessica Linkewer, Chava Mann and Carla Fischbach. The Chanukah Store will be open December 9-12 for students to shop for Chanukah gifts for family and friends. Chairs are Michele Scheck and Leanne Cohen. HIP/PTA launched its SCRIP program through which parents can purchase gift certificates to their favorite stores to benefit Hillel. Chairs are Elise Scheck Bonwitt and Natalie Wolf. Jordan Shockett (07) chaired an event at the University of Wisconsin where his fraternity partnered with Family Support and Resource Center to host a carnival for dozens of children with disabilities and their families. The Center is a nonprofit that helps children with disabilities stay at home with their parents. Rachel Tara Ginzburg (00) was married to Alejandro Gabriel. Rachel is the daughter of Eileen Hazan Ginzburg and Dr. Mario Ginzburg, and Alejandro is the son of Laura R. Levitt and Hernán Rosenberg. Rachel and Alejandro graduated from Emory, where they met. Eileen Ginzburg is a director of Kesher. Rachel is a sales consultant at Blink Twice, a manufacturer of a communication device for children and teenagers who cannot speak. She is also a candidate for a master’s degree in speech pathology at Hunter College. Rachel’s sister Jacquelyn (02) is a graduate of Hillel and her two brothers, Michael and Joey are current students at Hillel. Congratulations to Hillel alumni Michael Courtney (00) and Devora Bergman (01) on their engagement. Michael graduated from New York University in 2004 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and in 2007 with a master’s degree at NYU. He lives in New York City and works as the associate director of college counseling at SAR High School in Riverdale. Devora graduated from Columbia with Bachelor of Arts degree in 2006 and will receive her master’s at Columbia in 2009. UP! A Lesson in Democracy

Students in Grade 5 show off their work after “Moving Up” to Arlene Fishbein’s Grade 6 Language Arts class. Students enjoyed Bagel Break and a taste of Middle School with lessons in Talmud with Rabbi Heshy Riesel, Physical Science with Angela Williams and World History with James Morrow. Students in Grade 8 moved to Upper School for the day visiting Language Arts, Science and Judaica Studies classes. Students also enjoyed lunch with varsity athletes and student council representatives and participated in a pep rally. Hillel is currently accepting new applications for the 2009/2010 school year. Contracts for re-enrollment will be mailed in January.

Students in Middle and Upper School listened to issues, asked questions and cast their ballots in a mock presidential election just days before the actual November 4 election. The combined results were not replicated in the national election. Students overwhelming voted for John McCain (77.6%) and 22.4% favored Barack Obama. Special thanks to Hillel Parent and Chairman of Dade County’s Pro-Israel Campaign Bob Diener, who spoke in favor of McCain, and National Jewish Democratic Council Member Steven Wallace, who supported Obama. The event was organized and sponsored by HIP/PTA in partnership with the student activities office.

SCHOOL SPIRIT The first season of Hillel’s varsity football finished 2-6. School spirit soared at Hillel as the team played before a crowd of nearly 1,500 at the North Miami Stadium at Florida International University on October 18 for its first home game. The Hillel Hurricanes defeated the David Posnack Rams from Davie, 45-8. Student Council President Brandon Zarco and the Hillel Hurricane Mascot Ari Feldman led with school spirit.
