20/20 Vision is Clear An excerpt of Dr. Ezra Levy’s “20/20 Vision” presentation from Scheck Hillel Community School’s 2014 Annual Meeting (June 2) follows. He spoke as both Incoming Head of School and as a father. A vision is defined as a suggestion of destination or direction. An image of what we can and should become over the years. And it’s deeply embedded in the values, hopes and dreams we share as parents. Our vision has guided the work we accomplished this year and will continue to direct our work for years to come. We hope for our children to find success in the field of their dreams. We want them to be educators, doctors, Rabbis, lawyers, entrepreneurs, scientists, politicians, maybe even Heads of School and so much more.
2014-2015 Areas of Focus:
Academic Offerings & Judaic Literacy
Such long-term vision comes to life through partnership between home and school. My team of educators and I share with you the commitment to give your children the experiences, opportunities and learning they need to become academically independent, confident, secure and happy students who mature into global citizens with enduring Jewish identity, rich appreciation for their Judaism and love for Israel. As we work toward creating a long-term plan for our school, I share some growth of this past year, as well as some goals for the year to come. This school year, we chose three areas of focus: Professional learning, curriculum and assessment.
2011 Blue Ribbon School
Professional Learning Quality instruction means the very best teachers and meaningful curriculum. That’s why, through a faculty committee, we established systems to increase accountability, created development plans for teachers to map out goals and hosted peer-led workshops. We developed our own set of teaching standards and are in the process of publishing them for all to reference at any time. We strengthened our evaluation/observation process to make it yearround so teachers feel the partnership of colleagues from the start of the year. We deepened collaboration among teachers through CAJE’s Jewish New Teacher Project, Instructional Coaches Academy and the more than 70 workshops our teachers developed for each other.
Curriculum We revisited the process of defining the skills students should have when they start and end a grade level. Our teachers are writing this scaffolded curriculum to outline a structure of skill built upon skill, from Early Childhood through the highest level of AP and honors classes. We have begun outlining our academic courses with their scope and sequence profiles and curriculum maps, which break down each of the individual skills and content subjects taught. The longterm goal is to publish a school-wide scope and sequence for current and prospective parents to be able to see the skills being taught at each grade level throughout the year.

Froimzon has had an impressive high school career, serving as a team captain and starting quarterback. He holds school records for most passing yards and most touchdowns in a game, season and career.
UHealth Student Ambassadors
Each summer, University of Miami invites students to take part in a Student Ambassador Seminar presented by UHealth Sports Medicine. This exciting event is designed to allow students to meet and learn with other students from Miami-Dade and Broward counties and to interact with some of the most influential minds in South Florida, including professional athletes, business people, politicians and physicians. Karine Bensabat (Grade 10) and Josh Diener (Grade 9) were nominated to represent Hillel at the 5th Annual Student Ambassador Seminar, which was held June 20 at the University of Miami Hospital.
Author’s Book Hits Shelves
Andrea Toledano (Grade 11) recalls writing short stories in her Grade 1 Hillel classroom. Since those early beginnings, Toledano has refined her skills. This year, she published her first book. Home Away From Home, a compilation of poems Toledano wrote during her adolescent/ young teen years, was published under the pseudonym Kate Parker and is available for purchase on Amazon.com and Barnes&Noble.com.
When summer starts to wind down, that is the time for parents to start preparing their kids to head back to school. Here are a few simple and helpful tips for families to ease back into the school mindset. • Let the countdown begin: One of the ways you can build a sense of excitement is to post a calendar in the kitchen and let your child mark down the days until the first day of school.
• Start the conversation: Maintain an open dialogue by addressing any issues or anxieties about school that arise head-on while talking about the wonderful things they will learn, friends they will meet and opportunities that await them at school. • Get back into a routine: Start gradually adjusting bedtime and wake up times several days before the first day of school, re-establish morning routines and allot a certain amount of time for breakfast in the morning. Start reducing the amount of time kids spend in front of the television or on the computer. • Do your homework: Avoid back-to-school stress by making sure that your child has completed summer assignments. Leaving things for the last minute will only create anxiety in both you and your child.
• Involve the kids: Bring your child along with you to any open houses or meet-the- teacher events scheduled at the school. Also, acquaint younger children with basic activities, such as pick up and drop off routines and schedules. This is particularly important with younger children and those who will be attending a new school. • Sign up, try out, get involved: With a new school year beginning, new opportunities arise. Encourage your student to get involved by becoming an active part of the school community by joining clubs, sports teams, or any other organization that interests them. Extracurricular activities are also a great boost for college applications.
• Preparing college applications: Encourage older students to start making note of every activity and experience they have had, along with any honor or award they have received during their upper school experience. This will come in handy when it’s time to complete a resumé to submit as part of the college application. By preparing the list now, it will help diminish some of the stress they will have when they begin their college applications.

The word “sick”, what does it mean? In a dictionary, the definition is the same each time you open the page; it does not vary from person to person. The only thing that does vary from person to person is the unique image a person sees in their mind when they hear the word. In June, I came back from volunteering at a makeshift medical clinic in rural Guatemala. Before volunteering, if you asked me what I saw when I heard the word sick, I might say, “I see a doctor, a stethoscope, an X-ray and some medicine.” Now, when I hear the word sick, I see a thirteen-year old boy who was shot three times in the back due to gang violence, severing his spine and paralyzing him from the waist down.

Food to me no longer means a Pesach Seder, or even a steak. When I hear the word food, I think of a family in rural Guatemala. When that family incorporates meat in their meals twice a month, they are like kings. They look back and say, “This was a good month, because we had meat twice.” The words above, and the way I personally interpret them, have changed me. They have caused me to change what I value in life as a human being. However, the word poor, and its meaning, has impacted me the most. Upon thinking of this word, a memory of the 1625 patients we saw in 3 ½ days comes to mind. Many of them had never seen a doctor before; some walked from all over the country just to seek medical attention. This was an opportunity they might never have again. While reflecting on my entire trip, I have come upon one quote that I feel will motivate me in the future. “Be the change you want to see in the world.” –Mahatma Gandhi

20/20 Vision is Clear (Continued from Page 1) Assessment We continue to refine how we identify our students’ individual strengths and gaps, and then empower them with what they need to succeed and thrive. MAP, which students and families have become familiar with over recent years, looks at math, reading and language use. Hillel students continue to achieve scores above national norms through this assessment. The more information we have, the better we can teach children to their levels. That’s why we added more data points with the STAR reading assessment as part of Accelerated Reading in younger grades and the PSAT in Grade 9. We also added the SSAT in Grades 5 and 8 to enhance placement decisions. These assessments help us as educators tweak curricular goals to better meet the needs of our students while maintaining our high level of academic instruction aligned with state and federal academic standards. From these tests to AP exams, where our students outscore state and national averages, our children are learning and growing, and we’re with them along the way.
Now, how do we create a future? Let’s start with 2014-2015, when we’ll continue to preserve the essence of Hillel and maximize education and better fulfill students’ needs. Increased Academic Offerings We have a rising generation of curious, eager young scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians, yet our nation is facing a shortage of such experts. Reversing this trend starts with a college preparatory education that empowers our students with passion, skills and knowledge. Next year, select freshmen will take part in our STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) pilot designed by CIJE and ORT Israel. This is the beginning of adding similar initiatives like computer coding, new AP courses and more options for higherlevel learning.
4 Kol Hillel
Judaic Literacy We have a meaningful Judaic Studies, Hebrew language and Israel education program and have seen students increase their thirst for Torah learning since introducing Beit Midrash and Yahadut options, Israel throughout the Year, My Chayeinu Yeda Klalit and Tal Am. Instilling in our students the ability and desire to strive for the highest level of textual learning, analytical thinking and Jewish living calls for literacy in text and understanding the meaning of Jewish identity. That’s why we’re bringing back our office of student life to bridge classroom and experiential learning. Paired with family life and home, this is how enduring Jewish identity is fostered through students’ formative years of self-discovery and search for identity. We’re also adding the Gmara Brura program to Grades 6-8 to marry text and technology. These programs will bring our students to an understanding of Torah She’Bial Peh (Oral Law) and its connection to Torah SheBichtav (Written Law).
These initiatives – and more – will guide our path to making our vision a reality… when families across the country refer to Scheck Hillel as the school setting the standard. This isn’t so far off. Admission waitlists have started with many grades already maxed out for 2014-2015. Our enrollment for 20142015 is close to 10% higher than it was this time last year. And we’re finishing the construction of our 30,000 square-foot Athletic Complex, ready to start our Eduplex. That’s thanks to you. As I mentioned earlier, vision is an image of what we can and should become over the years. And it’s deeply embedded in our values, hopes and dreams. We have 20/20 vision. My bracha for us is for our 20/20 vision to be crystal clear so that in 2020, and beyond, our children are guided by the same strong Jewish values by which we were raised, and our alumni continue to be successful global citizens proud of their Jewish identity and hearts, and eager to impart on future generations the knowledge, traditions and values we instilled in them here at Scheck Hillel Community School. Dr. Ezra Levy began serving as Scheck Hillel Community School’s Head of School on July 1, 2014.
Momentum Update
The summer sun has been warming the Jerusalem stone of our newest addition, cardio equipment soon will be ready for workouts and turf has been laid. All the while, our Lion Pride has been getting mightier and mightier! In the fall, doors will open to our new Athletic Complex (Phase I of Momentum, our campus expansion project), creating an official home for our Lions and providing Scheck Hillel Community School with so much more. Equipped with digital display boards and an advanced sound system, this will be a place where we build shared spirit, gathering for community events and recreation. Our Athletic Field will be covered in synthetic turf at regulation size for football and soccer, with a diamond for other competitive sports. We are excited to host school programs, tournaments and community events in our Gymnasium, which will be used as a regulation-size basketball court, three regulation-size volleyball courts and three practice-size basketball courts; it will also include a weight room, locker rooms and concession. Already on the map for garnering district and regional titles, this is just the beginning for Hillel’s athletics program. An investment in our children’s future, the 30,000-square foot Athletic Complex will give students the competitive advantages that a strong athletics program brings to the college admission process, and the lifetime benefits of sports: encouraging the habit of fitness, teaching the value of teamwork and fostering discipline and leadership.
Next up is Phase II of Momentum: our Eduplex. This three-story, 70,000-square foot facility will house classrooms for Grades 6-12, a Beit Midrash, a science wing of laboratories and a digital media center, and will take our mission of developing global citizens with strong, enduring Jewish identity and values to the next level. Momentum’s been building…and this is our moment!
