Mazal Tov to the Class of 2015! A new chapter in Scheck Hillel’s history was written May 21, when the Diener Athletic Center hosted the Class of 2015 Commencement: Scheck Hillel Community School’s first graduation held at home. The 73 graduates soon will disperse to colleges, universities and programs throughout the United States and Israel, including two students who will serve in the Israel Defense Forces. Remarks to the graduates on this special occasion included the following excerpts. Nicole Scheck, Valedictorian Nicole will attend Columbia University this fall. “…As we embark on this unsure path, we are sure to face failure and make mistakes. Samuel Beckett said it best: ‘Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.’ We must propel ourselves forward and climb our way out of the holes we stumble upon. And never forget that if you need a hand to help you out of those holes, you have 73 close friends there for you.”
Vanessa Donaher, Head of Ben Lipson Upper School “Your success in college cannot be measured only by your degree, but instead by all the things that happened in between. Your success in life will not be about what you own. Certificates or impressive resumes do not alone define your life. Let love, happiness, joy, connection and contribution be your markers.”
Salomon Serfati, Salutatorian Salomon will attend the University of Pennsylvania after spending a year in yeshiva in Israel. “Never give up on your dreams! And most importantly, never forget Hashem. Hashem shomrecha, Hashem silcha al yad yeminecha. Hashem is your guardian, Hashem is the shade at your right hand. He is the source of what we have, what we had, and what we will get. And whenever you’re in need, or receive a blessing, always remember the source from which it came.”
Dr. Ezra Levy, Head of School “May Hashem hold the ideals and beliefs you have learned in your parents’ homes and at Scheck Hillel as a blessing for you. May the light of the Torah always be cherished by you. May Hashem’s presence always remain by your side so that your goals and aspirations will be successfully and peacefully achieved.”
Jonathan Allen, Senior Class President Jonathan will attend the University of Maryland this fall. “There’s a quote that goes as follows, ‘We met as strangers, grew as classmates, and leave as friends.’ After 13 incredible years with all of you, it’s safe to say that we met as strangers, grew as classmates, and leave as family.”
Rabbi Shlomo Sprung, Judaic Studies Teacher “These are some of the skills I have observed you learning: personal accountability in a world of “who cares:” responsibility for yourself, for your family, for your community, for a little State on the other end of the world whose heart beats alongside ours; tools like advocacy for what’s important; chessed for all those who need it; ethical treatment even for those who don’t deserve it…”

Two Grant Awards Enhance Academics NeuroNet Gets Students Moving
A supplemental program designed to help students in Kindergarten-Grade 2 strengthen essential fluency skills in reading, math and handwriting, will launch in the fall through a grant from the Center for the Advancement of Jewish Education (CAJE). Teachers and classroom assistants will receive training in the NeuroNet Learning Enrichment program: an evidencebased curriculum that adds movement to daily instructional time. Students watch and talk as they perform the exercises projected on an interactive whiteboard, practicing coordination and language fluency skills. Advances in neuroscience have confirmed the connection between motor development and academic learning; upon full implementation, teachers will use the DRA and STAR reading and math assessments to measure gains resulting from this program enhancement.
Faculty Selected for Brandeis Fellowship
Judaic Studies teacher Rabbi Yossi Kahan will join an elite group of 10 day school teachers for a fellowship that combines rigorous face-to-face coursework during two summer sessions at Brandeis University, with distance learning and mentoring throughout the school year. This unique opportunity allows emerging teachers to study and practice essential leadership skills while still working full time in their schools. Rabbi Kahan was chosen from among hundreds of fellowship applicants nationwide. Mazal tov!
2015 Annual Meeting
Scheck Hillel’s Annual Meeting is an opportunity for school stakeholders to learn about campus-wide advances, to recognize volunteer leadership and to install the new Board of Governors. The Annual Meeting is also the setting where the school’s organizational priorities are presented. At this year’s meeting on May 27, Scheck Hillel installed the 2015-16 Board of Governors and honored outgoing Board members Michelle Diener, Max Lichy and Marian Moscu for their many years of leadership and dedication to the school. Dr. Ezra Levy, Head of School, presented Roadmap 2020: Driving Education and the five areas set forth for long-term Scheck Hillel success: organizational stability, nurturing environment and culture, academics, Jewish life and affordability. “As an organization and especially as a national model for Jewish schools, we are always reviewing, assessing, reflecting and acting,” Dr. Levy said. He also shared several highlights from 2014-2015: • A nearly 20% increase in PSAT scores of rising seniors overall • An increase in reading, math and language skills throughout elementary grades • Adoption of digital platforms for curriculum mapping and planning • Production of the first schoolwide Program of Studies, ECE-Grade 12 • Acceptances to more than 80 universities and post-high school programs • Grand opening of the Athletic Complex Referring to the successful year of growth – from student development to campus expansion – he said: “Thanks to your partnership, we literally and physically have taken our children’s education and community to new heights this year.”

Early Childhood Education: Focus on Language Developement Written by Orly Dromi, ECE Coordinator This is the second of five installments in an ongoing series covering the five domains of Early Childhood Education at Scheck Hillel, which include Cognitive, Language/Literacy, Social-Emotional, Physical and Spiritual development. One of the most rapidly developing skills in young children is their ability to communicate through language. This amazing transformation is evident on a daily basis in Scheck Hillel’s early childhood classrooms. Our program fosters language growth at every developmental stage through hands-on, real world activities to which children eagerly respond. Our students also learn speaking and listening skills through dramatic play, music, art and literature.
Children reach language milestones at their own pace. Adults can provide support by engaging in vocabulary-rich, natural conversations, asking and answering questions and reading stories together. Most importantly, enjoy watching how language allows your children to discover and understand the world around them!
The foundation for literacy is built in PKT and PK2. Toddlers engage with a variety of literacy experiences through pre-writing and prereading tasks. Two-year-olds use scribbles, marks and drawings to convey meaning.
PK3 students begin to explore language through hands-on materials. They are starting to show interest in letters, especially those in their name. Students in PK4 are introduced to the Rowland Reading Program Happily Ever After. As children continue to experiment with writing, they make important letter-sound connections that build reading skills.
Language and literacy activities involve all the senses.
Science Fair: A Showcase of Discovery
Experiments come to life in the 2015 Science Fair.
Can you power new technology using an old hand crank? When chicken eggs are incubated, does the temperature need to be constant? How much aluminum sulfite is needed to grow crystals at home? These are some of the questions Kindergarten-Grade 5 students tackled as part of their 2015 Science Fair projects in March. Junior scientists learned the steps of the scientific process, gathering data, taking photographs and documenting results in the course of their investigations. Families and other guests visited the fair and listened attentively as students shared the results of their work. Kol HaKavod to all participants!

School Counseling Helps Students, Families Navigate Adolescence
To ease the transition from Grade 5 to Middle School, the Samuel and Henrietta Scheck Middle School Counseling Department focuses efforts on fostering and maintaining healthy interpersonal relationships in an ever-changing, fast-paced world. In 2014-15, counselors held conversations with students about the importance of respecting one’s body; the positive value of digital technology and the responsibilities that come with it; and the importance of making good decisions – specifically when it comes to social media, how to protect one’s self from cyber bullying and how to help a friend in need. The counseling program draws from Torah values, Rabbinic thought, and Second Step, a research-based curriculum, to teach and model essential communication, coping and decision-making skills. Scheck Hillel is committed to providing an environment where students feel safe, supported and empowered – all factors that contribute to overall motivation and academic achievement.

Students Go ‘Above and Beyond’
After dedicating many hours to learning interpersonal, public speaking, team-building and goal-setting skills, a volunteer group of Grade 8 students put their competencies to work by organizing a beach clean-up and barbeque for Grade 6 at Oleta River State Park.
Counselors Daniella Gelbspan and Lori Landes trained the students throughout the year. “This team is off to a great start as role models and future leaders of Scheck Hillel and in their communities,” said Landes. “I am very proud of these students who gave their time and energy to work together, going above and beyond. They selflessly took the skills they developed and put their ideas into action for others.”

STEM Programs Expand Opportunity Two Scheck Hillel students have been selected to participate in STEM-oriented summer programs, inspired by school projects and involvement.
Natalie Broide (rising Grade 11) is one of only 40 Miami participants selected for the 2015 Girls Who Code Summer Immersion Program hosted by Miami Dade College. Natalie will be engaged in seven weeks of intensive instruction in robotics, web design and mobile development, under the mentorship of top female U.S. tech leaders. Through the extensive program application process, Natalie had to demonstrate competence in quantitative skills and a passion for technology, neither of which presented a problem as her IB Personal Project was a computer processing unit she built from scratch. Girls Who Code is a national nonprofit that aims to close the gender gap in technology education, encouraging young women to pursue careers in science, technology and engineering.
Malvina Dimitri (rising Grade 6) presented at the annual International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) conference on June 28 in Philadelphia. Malvina joined Nancy Penchev, Lower School Media Center/Technology Teacher, in an interactive poster session where attendees interacted one-on-one or in small groups with presenters. Their poster featured “30 Activities in 30 Minutes,” based on their work in Scheck Hillel’s Girls Building STEAM club, which adds arts to STEM. Malvina highlighted the activities, experiments and challenges that sparked her fascination with science and technology. Malvina is the after-school club’s teacher’s assistant and photographer.

Reading, Math, Civics Converge for Good Cause May’s Kulanu Scholarship Awareness Month spurred many creative fundraising activities throughout campus, but some teachers took those efforts a step further by integrating curriculum objectives with the midah (character trait) of giving back to the community. ECE teachers Audrey Lederman and Jacqueline Anidjar (PK2) used the literacy unit The Very Hungry Caterpillar to organize a bake sale. Students ran the bake sale from the classroom window, and practiced their math and customer service skills to handle the high demand for their products. In Carmi Harari and Jennifer Alon’s (PK4) class, students conducted a vote to decide which product to sell, graphed the results, and collaborated on a very successful ice cream shop. Hands-on learning across the curriculum helped to open doors— of learning and of mitzvot—to benefit Kulanu.
ECE students practice what they learn.
Remembrance, Joy Mark Commemorations
Scheck Hillel was the epicenter of reflection, remembrance and celebration during the observance of Yom Hazikaron, Yom HaShoah, Yom Ha’Atzmaut and Yom Yerushalayim in April. Every school division took part in ceremonies, field trips, presentations or interactive displays. Faculty, students, staff and visiting shlichim created immersive experiences that not only brought tears to eyes, but also reinforced the blessing of being part of Scheck Hillel.
Scheck Hillel remembers and celebrates.

White House Applauds Students’ Advocacy When rising Grade 5 students Yael Dejman, Elizabeth Newman and Atara Sredni wrote a letter to President Obama, they never expected it to reach his desk, or much less, to elicit a personal response from him. This is why the girls were elated to receive a personal letter from the president and to be included in remarks he gave during a speech in Minneapolis. Throughout the year, the girls were encouraged by their teacher Rebecca Schiller to advocate for themselves. So they voiced their concern about boys not always passing the ball to them in P.E. class. Read below to see how these girls are certainly “holding their own.”
Evening of the Arts Showcases Talents Family and friends packed the house to hear performances by nearly 100 orchestra, band, drumline and vocal ensemble students in the second annual Scheck Hillel Community School Spring Concert: a showcase of the Jordan Alexander Ressler Performing Arts Program. Grade 1 students in the Strings Program kicked off the concert, followed by dazzling performances from Grade 6 orchestra, glee, beginning band, drumline, concert band and several pianists. Following the concert, guests moved to the Diener Athletic Center for a student art showcase and auction, which raised nearly $1,000 for Kulanu. What a beautiful Evening of the Arts!
Students present a delightful evening of music and art.
Spring Lions Athletics Senior Student-Athletes of the Year
Student-Athletes of the Year are seniors honored for their superior performance on the field, in the classroom and in their community. Recipients of the 2015 awards were Albert Dichy, Daniel O’Hayon, Nicole Scheck and Sharon Stambouli. Mazal tov to these dedicated student-athletes!
Spring Sports Roundup
Both the boys’ and the girls’ varsity tennis teams advanced to regionals after qualifying as district runners-up. The boys’ varsity volleyball team ended the season with an impressive 7-1 record. The girls’ flag football team worked hard to continue developing this year.
In the Juda and Maria Diener Lower School, the Grade 4-5 soccer team ranked as runner-up in district finals. The girls’ soccer team ended the season with a 1-3 record. The Grade 4 boys’ basketball blue team won 2 and lost 2, while the white team won the championship. The Grade 5 basketball blue team was a runner-up in districts, while the white team won 2 and lost 2 games. The girls’ basketball team attained a 1-3 record. Another district runner-up was the Grade 4 flag football team, with 4 wins and 1 loss; the Grade 5 flag football team had 3 wins, 2 losses.

Students Reflect on Grade 9 Israel Trip Experience While in Israel for the June 2015 Grade 9 trip, students shared their reflections.
Written by Alexandra Fincheltub This trip has helped shape who we are as students and as young Jewish people. We got to know and experience the irreplaceable State of Israel as we discovered more about each other, and ourselves, through amazing activities that most certainly could not happen anywhere else but in Israel. From building strength and stamina in the overnight army boot camp and our various beautiful hikes throughout the Golan, to becoming more familiar with and connecting to our Judaism and the Land of Israel, this trip has been an unforgettable experience.
Written by Galia Shapiro It couldn’t get more real. No longer were they just the characters of a story, but we saw actual proof of our history. The Israel trip gave me the reassurance that what I believe in is the truth.
Mark Zuckerberg, Queen Esther Featured in Storybooks
As the “big kids” from Grade 7 walked into the ECE classroom, little ones sat expectantly in a circle, looking at the colorful books about to be opened. They listened attentively to stories of Elie Wiesel, Rabbi Akiva, Mark Zuckerberg, Golda Meir, Maimonides and Queen Esther, among others. These storybooks were the brainchild of Rabbi Yossi Kahan, who teaches a Jewish Heroes and Heroines class with Rabbi Elie Ganz. The purpose was to learn about the contributions of Jewish individuals throughout history, integrating Judaic content, English and art to produce a final product. This interdisciplinary approach to teaching and learning is one of the cornerstones of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme in Grades 6-10.
8 Kol Hillel
As students researched their “Jewish Impact” biographies, they revisited children’s literature and adapted their writing style for young audiences. Joseph Rimon, one of the Grade 7 authors, expressed his delight at how engaged the ECE audiences were: “They were so interested in the stories! They couldn’t wait!”
Stories spark student interest in ECE classes.
