Honoring Our Legacy, Inspiring Our Future
Welcome From Our HEAD OF SCHOOL & RABBINIC HEAD How we would have loved to have been at the first meeting of Scheck Hillel’s founders! A Rabbi and a family with a dream gathered a group of dedicated parents looking to provide their children with Jewish education. This became the circle of visionary founders who changed the landscape of the Jewish community in South Florida. They quietly and unknowingly built a future for more than only their children; they built the future of the greater community. Their focus on Jewish values, shared heritage and academic excellence shaped their vision into a school that thousands of students have called home. How do we take the lessons of our founders to ensure the strength of our past and fortify the next 50 years as the third and fourth generations of Scheck Hillel students walk through our doors? We do it by maintaining resilience as we face the uncertainties of the world. We focus on the continuity of mission of these past 50 years. We focus on our core values Chessed חסד, Emet אמת, Kavod כבוד, Shalom שלום, and Ruach רוח- by modeling those behaviors for our students and community. We embrace the legacy and take up the charge to cherish and guard it for our next generations. The next 50 years don’t write their own page. We continue the story our founders wrote and build on those values and experiences to create our shared Jewish future. Our Rabbis refer to our Avot (forefathers): Avraham, Yitzchak, and Yaakov as a Chut Meshulash, a three-pronged cord that is not easily broken. The lessons we learn from their conduct, and from the Torah given to their descendants, are the basis of the Jewish values and way of life for which we stand. Scheck Hillel’s educational philosophy - paired with the pursuit of academic excellence allows our children to answer today’s most important question: Who do I want to be? You can only reach 50 years as a community and educational institution with continuity of mission. Today we remain in awe of the vision, hard work, and dedication of a small group of humble leaders who unknowingly defined our community. The story of the next 50 years has yet to be written. We have been handed a treasure, a legacy, and a great responsibility. And we will always lean on our own Chut Meshulash - the three-pronged cord of amazing families, devoted community, and dedicated professional staff - to ensure the next 50 years meet and exceed the hopes and dreams of our founders.

Message from our Chair SCHECK HILLEL BOARD OF GOVERNORS “Na’aseh v’Nishma” - We Will Do and We Will Listen These words come to mind as we celebrate Scheck Hillel Community School’s 50th anniversary. Both start with the letter nun, of which the numerical value is 50, and also connect us to our acceptance of Torah to become the Jewish People. These two actions are at the core of our school. Na’aseh, “we will do,” represents our obligation and mission to teach our children - from their earliest years in preschool to their graduation, chai to chai, we prepare them for college and to be part of a nation, Am Yisrael Chai. Na’aseh also represents a community that empowers generations with tools and knowledge while making sure their Judaism and love for Israel are at the center of everything they do. Nishma, “we will listen,” means that this work is a collaborative effort among founders, professionals, students, parents and lay leaders that empowers us to grow. These groups within our community listen to one another to ensure our continued advancement for the next 50 years.

YEARS At Scheck Hillel’s 50th Anniversary Celebration on March 18, 2021, nearly 800 friends reunited and reminisced together online to celebrate five decades of Jewish educational excellence and begin the journey toward Scheck Hillel’s next 50. We honored founders, leadership, alumni, faculty and staff, and enjoyed greetings from a range of community friends. Alumni joined beloved faculty in Zoom breakout rooms: a gathering that was especially meaningful and emotional after a year of facing the global pandemic together.

OUR EARLY YEARS
A vision conceived by a handful of families in the late 1960s became a reality in 1970, when Scheck Hillel Community School was founded in a storefront. In 1976, the school moved to its present 14-acre site in North Miami Beach. Ever-evolving to meet the diverse needs of South Florida’s Jewish community, the school expanded to provide continuity of learning and community from Early Childhood through Grade 12. In 2011 and in 2020, Scheck Hillel was named a National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education - the highest honor in education - recognizing the quality of its academic offerings and student outcomes.

OUR LEGACY
Today, Scheck Hillel is one of the largest Jewish day schools in the world, serving more than 1,000 students ages 18 months-18 years, chai to chai. Scheck Hillel offers a college preparatory experience within the framework of a dual curriculum of General and Judaic Studies & Hebrew Language, enriched with opportunities for students to develop talents and pursue interests through personal initiative. The school focuses on the whole child to nurture the natural curiosity children bring to learning. Scheck Hillel students are inquisitive, motivated learners taught to embrace a growth mindset. They develop skills to contribute to society while exploring who they want to become as individuals. Our family learning programs infuse the student experience with meaning and connection, as Scheck Hillel is more than a student’s school; it’s a family’s community.
OUR FUTURE
Today, Scheck Hillel is celebrating 50 years of academic excellence as it begins the exciting journey forward to the next 50. Thanks to our students, our faculty and our generations of families and alumni, we are poised for an exciting new era built upon meaningful history, a vibrant present and a strategic focus on the future. With bold vision, timeless values and enduring identity, Scheck Hillel Community School is designing Jewish education for a new generation.
