A Superpowered Community CELEBRATING THOSE WHO INSPIRE AND PARTICIPATE

Dear Friends, Every superhero has an origin story: a narrative that explains how they acquired their special power. Scheck Hillel Community School’s superheroes derive their power from our shared commitment to Jewish education. Kulanu reminds us how fortunate we are to have a community of dedicated, generous volunteers and donors. This year, A Superpowered Community acknowledges the broad participation of students, alumni, faculty, staff, business partners, foundations and friends – our everyday superheroes. This publication highlights 2017-18 donors who made a gift or pledge to our school from July 1, 2017, through June 30, 2018. We have made every effort to uphold our commitment to privacy. As requested, donors who opted to give privately are listed as anonymous in this publication. You deserve to be super-celebrated! With sincere appreciation, Ronit Shiro Development Chair Scheck Hillel Community School Board of Governors

Kulanu Scholarship Awareness Month WHAT IS YOUR SUPERPOWER? With these words as inspiration, Scheck Hillel Community School kicked off Kulanu Scholarship Awareness Month in May 2018 - a time of year dedicated to opening doors to Jewish education. Our superheroes answered the call, enriching our school’s purpose and unity. Every grade level and several generations of Scheck Hillel families flexed their superpowers to make Kulanu Scholarship Awareness Month a success. Thanks to our amazing community, we have successfully raised the funds to provide opportunity for Jewish students today, and we are already starting to secure their place at Scheck Hillel for tomorrow.

2

What Is Your Superpower? Entrepreneurship, creativity and heart: These are some of the superpowers student volunteers bring to Scheck Hillel. This year, students organized an art auction, a craft fair, a recital, bake sales and more, all in support of Kulanu. Kulanu’s calling power also extends to the many birthday and B’nai Mitzvah gifts donated to fund scholarships, so that more children can benefit from a Jewish education. Kol HaKavod to all of our student superheroes!

Faculty and Staff: Our Everyday SuperheroeS

Faculty and staff are everyday superheroes who lead by example. This year, 78% of faculty and

staff participated in the Kulanu campaign - our highest level of faculty and staff participation yet! Throughout the year and especially during Kulanu Scholarship Awareness Month, campus bustles with activities planned and facilitated by faculty and staff, who wear the Kulanu shirt with pride and purpose.

2018 ANNUAL EVENT Scheck Hillel’s 2018 Annual Event

on January 21 celebrated community in support of the school’s Kulanu Scholarship Fund. Inspired by remarks from keynote speaker Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks and by our Hachnasat Sefer Torah, honoring the life and legacy of Yuval Miara, z”l, our community answered the call to Build Jewish Future. We thank our 2018 Annual Event Co-Chairs, Evelyn and Isaac Marcushamer and Jacqueline and Scott (’92) Weisblum, and the circle of volunteers and sponsors who made this day’s success possible for Kulanu.

“So long as the Jewish soul never stops learning, the Jewish heart never stops beating.” Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks Keynote Speaker

“Scheck Hillel is part of the centuries-old unbroken chain that binds each generation of Jews to both its predecessors and successors.” Evelyn Marcushamer Event Co-Chair

SEFER TORAH DEDICATION As part of the Annual Event, a new Sefer Torah was dedicated in honor of the life and legacy of beloved Scheck Hillel teacher, parent and friend, Yuval Miara, z”l. Our community came together in song and prayer to pay tribute to his legacy. Inspirational words by Meytal - Yuval’s wife – reminded us of how he cherished his role as an educational leader. May our community always be inspired by Yuval's commitment to our children's Jewish education, b'simcha.
