A vision is defined as a suggestion of destination or direction. An image of what we can and should become over the years. And it’s deeply embedded in values, hopes and dreams that come from a place of leadership.

We dream for our children to find success in the fields of their dreams: medical, communal, religious, educational, corporate or political. Our students are already reaching great heights in education. That’s thanks to the education you teach at home and accomplishments we’ve made here over time.

This past school year, we chose three areas to work on: professional learning, curriculum evaluation and student assessment.

Quality instruction means the very best teachers and meaningful curriculum. That’s why, through a committee of faculty dedicated to professional development, we updated our teaching standards, strengthened our evaluation/observation process and deepened collaborative relationships among colleagues

In terms of curriculum, we revisited the process of defining the skills students should have when they start and end a grade level. And through assessment, we continued to refine how we identify our students’ individual strengths and gaps, and how to empower them with what they need to succeed and thrive.

How do we create a future where we realize our vision to establish Scheck Hillel with an academic structure designed to meet the needs of all learners? We do so by preparing today’s children academically, emotionally and spiritually.

In 2014-15, we’ll continue to preserve the essence of Scheck Hillel and identify ways to maximize education and better fulfill our students’ needs. Next year, we’ll focus on: initiatives that broaden academic course offerings, Judaic literacy and the academic experience.

#1: Increased Offerings Even with a rising generation of curious young scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians, our nation is facing a shortage of experts in these areas. Reversing this trend starts with education that inspires and empowers students with passion, skills and knowledge. That’s why select freshmen will begin Scheck Hillel’s STEM program next year.

#2: Judaic Literacy We want to instill in our students the ability and desire to strive for the highest level of textual learning, analytical thinking and Jewish living. That means literacy both in text and understanding the meaning of identity.

#3: The Academic Experience Our Class of ‘14 continued our Scheck Hillel tradition of seniors graduating to prestigious universities. And a record nearly 25% of this class will head to Israel. Our college guidance program leads students to the best opportunities for them‌where they can reach their potential and explore their own interests and cultivate their own talents. Now, we are streamlining to create a more efficient college advising system and to enhance the overall experience.

Waitlists have started as half our Lower School already is closed and maxed out for next year! And we’re finishing the construction of our 30,000 square foot Athletic Complex, ready to start Phase II’s Eduplex. And that’s thanks to you.

We have 20/20 vision. May our 20/20 vision be crystal clear so that six years from now, in 2020, and beyond, our children are guided by the same strong Jewish values by which we were raised, our alumni are learned, capable, successful global citizens proud of their Jewish identity and hearts, and eager to impart on future generations the knowledge, traditions and values we as a community instilled in them here at Scheck Hillel Community School.
