What You Need to Know About the 2015-16 Common Application Beginning with the 2015-16 application year, students using the Common Application will benefit from changes expected to make the overall college application experience more efficient, especially as it pertains to essay writing. For the first time since the Common App’s online launch in 1998, member colleges will be able to choose whether or not to require a personal statement; however, students still will have the option of submitting an essay if they wish to do so. Applicants also will be able to access and make unlimited edits to their essay. Each school will clearly list its specific requirements on the Common Application, eliminating the need for students to search elsewhere for accurate, complete information. In addition, the online interface will be improved to allow students to preview each page of their application before submitting. These new safeguards and enhancements have been welcomed by all those involved in the college admission process. The 2015-16 Common Application will become available August 1, 2015.

More than 500 colleges and programs now accept the Common Application.
