WELCOME Welcome to the summer edition of Kol Hillel! This year-end issue includes highlights of the school year: our 50th Anniversary Celebration, examples of extraordinary student achievement and a salute to the Class of 2021. The grit and resilience of our school community during this challenging time exemplifies the power of partnership: all of us, together, made possible a year of achievement, adaptability and growth for our children. Thank you to all who played a part in making this an amazing year. With strong enrollment for fall, advances in academic offerings and dedicated lay and professional teams, we are looking forward to an exciting and healthy year ahead.

To our teachers, I just want to let you know that you are seen and especially appreciated. Your abilities to do what you do have kicked into a superpower. I appreciate every minute of your time and energy both inside and out of class… -Scheck Hillel Parent

Scheck Hillel Community School

At Scheck Hillel’s 50th Anniversary Celebration on March 18, 2021, nearly 1000, friends reunited and reminisced together online to celebrate five decades of Jewish educational excellence and begin the journey toward Scheck Hillel’s next 50. The program honored beloved founders, leadership, alumni, faculty and staff, and enjoyed greetings from a range of community friends. Alumni joined their favorite faculty in Zoom breakout rooms, a gathering that was especially meaningful and emotional after a year of facing the global pandemic together. ELEVATINGTHE THESCHECK SCHECKHILLEL HILLEL EXPERIENCE EXPERIENCE ELEVATING An unanticipated shift in what it means to go to school gave way to student ingenuity and creativity.

Whether learning from home or at school, many Scheck Hillel students found ways to create meaningful opportunities for learning and connection - for themselves and their peers. They started new clubs, embraced new academic challenges, and expressed themselves through performance, writing, service and art. Scheck Hillel students showed determination and excelled in virtual annual competitions, despite limitations on travel and physical gatherings. These are some highlights:

ACADEMIC COMPETITIONS

Alex Bennaroch ‘22

Elie Fishman ‘22

Jacob Goldshtein ‘22

Sadie Slomovitz ‘22

Alan Wainer ‘22

Stephanie Wolak ‘22

At this year’s YUNMUN: The annual Yeshiva University National Model United Nations conference, Scheck Hillel Juniors Alex Bennaroch, Elie Fishman, Jacob Goldshtein, Sadie Slomovitz, Alan Wainer and Stephanie Wolak represented the school with distinction via Zoom.

Grade 8 students Alan Benacerraf, Kenan Ben-Shalom and Benjamin Herschman presented research projects in the South Florida Regional Science Fair. These junior scientists advanced from Scheck Hillel’s Grade 8 Science Fair to the District fair.

Engineering & Entrepreneurship Honors students Maya Lev-Tov ‘23, Pola Levy ‘23 and Jaime Mizrahi ‘23 won FIRST PLACE in the 2021 Center for Initiatives in Jewish Education Innovation DayCommercial Products Category. Seven additional teams of Scheck Hillel Engineering Honors students were named Finalists in other categories. This prestigious contest included 350 projects from 47 private schools from across the country.

STUDENT-LED CLUBS This year, high school students started two new clubs: The Investment Club, founded by Alex Benarroch ‘22 and Simon Benarroch ‘22, and the Diversity Club, led by Ciara Donaher ‘24. Other clubs and honor societies soared in growth this year: the Environmental Club, Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society and the Science National Honor Society.

JORDAN ALEXANDER RESSLER ARTS PROGRAM

SERVICE Many Scheck Hillel students who became aware of community needs during the pandemic poured their energies into projects such as providing kits for essential workers in hospitals, food for those in need and supporting community organizations. Middle School’s Chessed Club remained in touch with friends at Regent’s Park nursing home and collected personal hygiene items for the JCS Kosher Food Bank. Page 5

Visual art as a vehicle for individual expression is a cornerstone of the Scheck Hillel experience. This year, artists schoolwide created for celebrations, hallway galleries and for portfolios - from PKT to High School’s AP Art classes. Look for their work in next year’s Scheck Hillel calendar!

Scheck Hillel Community School

Students dedicated to improving their music skills rose to a new level: they learned to rehearse and play pieces “alone together” via Zoom. Members and talented faculty of Scheck Hillel’s state-recognized Alexander Jordan Ressler Arts Program delighted audiences online and with performances on campus, as music remained central to celebrations and classroom lessons. Musical theatre also found its voice, evolving into digital parody in a comedic adventure about the Internet. All players showed incredible versatility and a sense of humor as they put together all of their performances. Bravo!

THE SCHECK HILLEL EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE Students excel through rigorous academic experiences and high expectations for their achievement.

Academic Excellence: Expanding Opportunity

Scheck Hillel’s personalized learning experiences prepare and empower students to innovate, contribute to, lead and change the world. With a continued eye on academic excellence, Scheck Hillel expanded academic offerings through these initiatives:

Lower School

Keystone is a personalized enrichment program exclusively for high-achieving Grade 3 students, expanding into Grade 4 next year.

Middle School

Elements of Mathematical Foundations is an accelerated math track that prepares students for college-level math by Grade 9. This advanced, integrated math track is for top students and by invitation.

High School

New courses will be added in 2021-2022, reflecting the range of student interest and ability: MultiVariable Calculus and a third Advanced Placement Science class - AP Physics C: Electricity & Magnetism, a course in which students explore concepts such as electrostatics, conductors, capacitors and magnetic fields, and conduct hands-on laboratory work to investigate phenomena and use calculus to solve problems. New electives will be added in arts and science.

New Honor Societies for 2021-2022:

Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society National English Honor Society

Social-Emotional Learning

Alongside academics, social-emotional education is infused throughout school and spearheaded by a team of school counselors, including one dedicated exclusively to our Early Childhood program.

Conscious Discipline

Conscious Discipline is a program that empowers families with skills that create safe, connected, problemsolving environments at home. The program began with ECE and will be expanded to Grade 2.

Facilities: Inviting Spaces Enhanced spaces for learning, playing and eating were critical in helping students adjust upon their return to school in October. Those spaces will continue to expand with the renovation of our cafeteria and kitchen, and plans for a new playground for Grades 2-5.

Culture: Involved Families Scheck Hillel is fortunate to partner with families through strong HIP/PTA programming, Advisory Committee, and family learning programs. Here’s a checklist of opportunities open to returning and new families: Advisory Committee Student Advisory Committees

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHTS

Meet two Scheck Hillel alumnae who have returned home as parents and board members. Kol Hillel asked each of them what aspects of the Scheck Hillel experience stand out as markers of excellence.

Michelle (Saplicki) Azout ‘02

Scheck Hillel’s 2021-2022 Board of Governors “There are a few things that stand out as markers of excellence at Scheck Hillel: the community, the academics and most importantly, the teachers. I cannot speak highly enough about my children’s teachers and guidance counselors this past year. In the most challenging of circumstances, they never gave up on my kids and pushed them to reach their full potential.”

Sharon Minski ‘97

Scheck Hillel’s 2021-2022 Board of Governors “One of Scheck Hillel’s markers of excellence is the dual curriculum. Our administrators at Hillel work hard to find the right balance so that students meet and go beyond all the general studies requirements, while also instilling Jewish values and history. The students are able to thrive in this environment and graduate with a well-rounded education.”
