Parent Engagement Throughout the Year
WELCOME
From the Head of School and Rabbinic Head
An Essential Partnership
One of the most gratifying aspects of our work is to see students and parents sharing special moments at school. These interactions are healthy and special and unforgettable. Educational research has shown that our instincts are well-founded: experts confirm that parent engagement in education is a key predictor of student success. This is why we value this partnership and strive to create meaningful opportunities for positive engagement - both at school and at home. In August, make sure to review Scheck Hillel’s online Family Education Guide: a listing of diverse offerings for all learners. As this amazing school year comes to a close, Kol Hillel celebrates the many ways this essential partnership creates a school culture of personal success for all of our students. Have a safe, wonderful summer. With gratitude, Vanessa Donaher Head of School

A PARTNERSHIP IN EDUCATION
Experts agree that parent engagement in education is a key predictor of student success in school and in life.

Scheck Hillel Community School
Scheck Hillel Community School students, families, faculty and staff share a commitment to partnerships that maximize achievement for children. Parent engagement can take many different forms, from attending curriculum nights and parent conferences to participating in educational programs on campus. Engagement can mean using eHillel.org (the school’s web portal) for school-home communication, attending college counseling and drug education workshops or participating in a shiur. Families design the approach that best meets their needs to support each and every child’s educational journey.
LEARNING TOGETHER Parent Engagement Reinforces Educational Mission
Which learning moments do you cherish most?
Page 4 Page 4
From early childhood through Grade 12, parents and students come together to share profound moments and milestones...receiving a first Siddur, being inducted into one of the school’s national honor societies, performing acts of kindness, learning Torah in chevrutah (small groups)...and graduating to top colleges and universities‌
HIP/PTA Pillar of Family Engagement
HIP/PTA: The dedicated parent and faculty/staff volunteer body on campus HIP/PTA initiatives arise from the ongoing conversation between families and school, ensuring that resources and projects fulfill needs and enrich the quality of the school experience for all. HIP/PTA is engaging, informative and social, with programs and activities designed to serve our parent community. If you are seeking a meaningful way to connect with your child’s school, HIP/PTA is the best place to start.
Learning When School’s Out Tips and Resources for Families
Hillel’s Involved Parents
-Jason Touvi, Upper School English Teacher Read a book with your child…Reading can transport us to distant worlds, can open up our hearts and minds, and can inspire us. -Andrew Butler, Upper School English Department Chair and Capstone Teacher Simple math, such as calculating the tip in a restaurant or how much is saved during a sale, can help children retain skills. -Erica Farago, Upper School Math Teacher
Read, read, read! It’s the best thing parents can do with their kids! They should also encourage their children to keep a journal. -Roberta Meisels, Lower School Librarian Bring a sketchbook to the museum. Pause to allow your child to draw or write about an exhibit they love. -Valerie Berman, Publications Editor Listen to an audiobook together, in the car or at home. Ask each other questions about the story. -Sally Rabe, Lower School Teacher Page 5

Project-Based Learning Across Generations M’Dor L’Dor
Grade 3 students embarked on a project to trace their family roots: M’dor L’dor, from generation to generation. This project-based learning (PBL) experience gave them an opportunity to make connections across subjects, plan various phases, select family members or loved ones to interview, record the interview and write their biographies. The semesterlong project included a PBL parent orientation, conversations with remarkable grandparents and great-grandparents and an artifacts showcase. A unique component of M’Dor L’Dor this year was the academic encounter between Grade 3 and Grade 11 students, who had just completed their own “roots” project, The Modern Jewish Woman, in Judaic Studies class. The give-and-take between these two age groups was mutually enriching.
“Several key features distinguish PBL - the gold standard - from a typical project,” explained Craig Carpentieri, Scheck Hillel’s Chief Academic Officer. “The learning process is the project. A very specific set of skills is defined and developed. This isn’t just a Grade 3 initiative. As early as ECE and all the way through high school with our 10th Grade Project, our students are gaining new skills through project-based learning initiatives.” Grades 1, 2 and 4 also conducted long-term projects. M’dor L’dor seamlessly integrated Hebrew and Judaic Studies, language arts, social studies, media and technology. Grade 3 teacher Ann Sweet emphasized, “Students completed most of the work in class. Families were asked to help only with the video segment of the project. We chose the theme M’dor L’dor because learning about your heritage helps you find out who you are.” Three generations of the Kattan family

KINDNESS IS A VERB AT SCHECK HILLEL As one of Scheck Hillel’s five core values, chessed חסד- kindness shapes the school’s mission and educational philosophy. Beginning in Early Childhood, students are shown lovingly and are expected to demonstrate kindness through actions small and large. Visiting the elderly and running Kulanu bake sales, for example, begin to raise awareness of the needs of others, teaching that kindness is joyful. Simultaneously, children begin to develop empathy, recognizing and responding to sadness and joy in others.
Grade 6 students Valeria Extrakt, Luna Karner and Felipe Rosentgberg sort clothes on Community Closet trip
As students mature in the classroom, they are encouraged to show acts of kindness toward each other. They call classmates who are sick to wish them a refuah shlema. Parents send in mitzvah notes to reinforce good deeds. Through the Judaic Studies curriculum, they learn how the kindness of our forefathers (i.e., hospitality, sharing, forgiveness) shaped the destiny of Am Yisrael.
The Middle School Chessed Club and the Upper School Office of Student Life build into the curriculum ongoing opportunities to perform g’milut chassadim, acts of loving kindness. Some students choose to serve off campus, as the next story reports, or through school clubs. Scheck Hillel’s Advisory Committee includes a Kindness sub-committee, a group of parents whose priority is to ensure that kindness permeates all we do. Kindness is a shared commitment, and all members of the Scheck Hillel community work to “do” kindness every day.

Kindness also is learning to be inclusive welcoming new friends to lunch, inviting the whole class to a Bar/Bat Mitzvah, and saying thank you to those who prepare lunch and keep our campus safe and clean.
Global Citizenship Through Service Learning
Beyond classroom learning, Scheck Hillel students look for ways to learn by doing, to find purpose and meaning as well as new skills.

Service learning is a form of community involvement that combines setting and achieving goals and taking meaningful action. Every student in Grades 1-12 is required to complete community service hours. Recently, upperclass students aided communities and institutions through hands-on work and design projects here at home and abroad.

Girls Building STEAM Club Awarded Two Grants The Girls Building STEAM Club was awarded two grants for their project “Designing the Future: Using Fashion to Address Ecological Needs” by the Impact Women’s Initiative of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation and the Technology, Education, Research & Redesign Alliance (TERRA, Inc.) The project paired Upper School mentors with Lower School students and culminated with a fashion showcase.

GALLERY WALK PERSONAL PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
How do teachers improve their craft? They learn from each other, as Upper School faculty and leadership demonstrated in their “Gallery Walk,” a strategy that fosters knowledge-building through collaboration and innovation. Learners rotate through stations to listen, ask questions and respond to what colleagues have developed, taking ideas and concepts from a variety of disciplines, and challenging each other to think deeply about their practice. Reflecting Scheck Hillel’s commitment to ongoing professional learning, all teachers participate in weekly workshops tied to objectives they have set for themselves. The ultimate goal of professional development is to foster teaching excellence to maximize student achievement.

This summer, Carlos Montero, Upper School science teacher, will lead a week-long workshop for educators about Modeling Instruction: a teaching method through which students learn science as scientists do - by doing science. Mr. Montero first encountered Modeling Instruction in 2006 and has applied the pedagogy since experiencing the positive impact it had on his chemistry students. In 2013, he was certified as a Modeling Instruction workshop leader by the American Modeling Teachers Association (AMTA) and earned the Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching. Scheck Hillel looks forward to hosting the workshop, which is open to science teachers from all disciplines and all schools.
