You’ll find our students embracing new opportunities to learn and have loads of fun in the expanded After-School Program. With options in categories such as Design/STEM, Health & Wellness, Creative Arts and Connection, students in PK3 through Grade 12 are exploring new horizons and uncovering hidden talents. Bringing the Learning Home: Reflections From Faculty and Staff “What did you learn today?” In this issue of Kol Hillel, faculty and staff share their suggestions to strengthen bonds with our children and reinforce school learning. Scheck Hillel encourages the home - school partnership through ongoing, meaningful communication, and diverse family education opportunities. “We teach the gifts of empathy, compassion and respect. If we realize, as parents, that we are a mirror for our children, we must live the values that we expect-empathy, compassion and respect. Together we are creating a strong compassionate community of young Jewish children who will create a world of which we can all be proud.”
Yaakov Boyd, Upper School Judaic Studies Teacher “Ultimately, learning is a cycle of information passing from one person to another. This is part of our tradition as Jews, and something from which we draw strength. We create opportunities for our students to acquire information, in order to become better and more refined individuals. Our students bring this learning into the home and beyond. Parents become enriched as well and use it as a stimulus to create conversations at the dinner table and especially on Shabbat. Then, they relay this information to us. This allows us to hear an echo from our lesson, forcing us to make necessary tweaks and to sharpen our focus.”
Lauren Berley, Upper School Counselor & Alumna “As a school counselor and parent, I find it of utmost importance to parent with love and approval and always try taking a positive approach. We need to care, encourage and guide, but allow our kids to fail, fall down and get right back up. By providing them with experiences to explore the world and make mistakes and learn how to overcome adversity, the more resilient and ultimately well-adjusted they will become.“

Students Thriving Embracing a growth mindset means learning from challenges, modifying tactics, and trying again. Students with a growth mindset achieve because they are willing to reimagine the task at hand, are open to coaching and believe that their own abilities can grow through effort. The students recognized by these national and global organizations prove the power of a growth mindset.

Jason Touvi, Upper School English/Language Arts teacher, is an adjunct professor of English and social sciences at Miami-Dade College and Broward College. He is also an instructor for the Teacher Education Program at Miami-Dade. Upper School Judaic Studies teachers Yael Sprung and Hana Barouk attended a Pardes Institute for Jewish Studies conference titled “Cultivating the Whole Child Through the Jewish Lens.” Learning alongside educators from the US and Israel, the teachers brought home new approaches for educating children in today’s world, and for personalizing instruction. They are already implementing some of the techniques and look forward to sharing with colleagues. Faculty and staff content experts from a cross-section of Scheck Hillel divisions participated in CAJE’s “The Better Lesson Program,” a professional development model that includes biweekly virtual coaching and individualized training. The Hillel team is focusing on personalizing the learning experience for students, using this innovative platform to design, test and assess instruction. Participants include Dvora Avisar, Sarah Goldman, Natalie Gurland, Nikki Gutierrez, Jacqueline Kapnek, Elisheva Krevsky, Jennifer Richards, Robin Rimon, Kelly Silver, Jason Touvi, Dr. John Suarez, Ana Yativ and Tova Yemin.
