Curriculum

Visual Arts Students Develop Eye for Criticism Art criticism comes with the territory in Grade 9 visual arts classes, where students periodically are asked to critique their own work and learn from an audience of peers. In visual arts teacher Hadassah Freiberg’s studio, Jonathan Rogatinsky (Grade 9) takes an active role in the process, often pointing out elements the artists may not have noticed. From shading and scale to shadows and saturation, students incorporate technical language as they hone their drawing skills. Sofia Biton appreciates the feedback: “It’s important to hear what others are saying, because they help us look at things from a different perspective.” After working on the painstaking details of a drawing, Raquel Wengrowsky took a few steps back and noted, “It really looks like

a face!” As the work takes shape, Freiberg will evaluate how students use the feedback to adjust technique in their graphite drawings. Advanced Placement art teacher Edith Shlesinger adds, “Criticism in art is a must; sometimes the word has a bad connotation, but for us, it means ‘take a step back and observe the work from a distance.’ It’s one of the most important tools in the learning process.” Courses in the visual arts are one component of the Jordan Alexander Ressler Arts Program at Scheck Hillel. Students with an interest in the visual arts may pursue several options and expand their portfolios in AP Studio Art, which includes Drawing, 2-D Design and 3-D Design.

Q&A With Michelle (Gorin) Andron, ‘96, School Administrator On a typical week in this position, what do you do? I am responsible for the general studies K-8 program. This includes coordinating the curriculum, meeting with teachers and parents and teaching. I also plan professional development and implement yearly academic initiatives. What educational path did you follow? I have a Bachelor’s in elementary education from the University of Miami and a Master’s in special education with a focus on gifted from the University of North Texas.

Where do you live? Los Angeles, California

What is your current profession and where do you work? I am the general studies principal of the largest K-8 school in the San Fernando Valley area, Emek Hebrew Academy. My original plan was to go to medical school. While at the University of Miami I took several introductory classes in other fields. One of them was an introduction to education. I fell in love with my classes and the field experience that came with them. I actually did one of my internships in Cheryl Cooper’s first grade class at Scheck Hillel!

What is most rewarding about the work you do? What are the challenges? The most rewarding part of the job is working with the kids - I love having the opportunity to interact with them on a daily basis. They are the fuel that keeps me going every day. The most challenging part is setting boundaries. This job is 24/7 and it is hard to balance home life and work life without setting very clear boundaries and adhering to them.

What is one essential academic or life skill you honed at Scheck Hillel? When I think back about my days at Scheck Hillel I have fond memories of faculty that truly cared about me. That is one thing that I try to bring to my school and students on a daily basis. Students will only learn from people that they feel connected to and building that relationship is the most important part of education. As a principal I can coach many techniques, but passion, love and ability to relate to children can’t be taught. Read this and other alumni profiles at eHillel.org/alumni.
