Oh, the places they'll go! What compels YOU to strive beyond the expected? To delve more deeply into a subject or topic? Lion's share presented these questions to five students identified by faculty as individuals who HAve taken charge of their own learning, maximizing the opportunities Scheck Hillel offers.
MATIAS LANCEWICKI, GRADE 11 Interests: Math, science, soccer "Calculus expands your mind and makes you think out of the box. I've had Ms. Slapak (Sabrina Slapak, Upper School math teacher) for four years...she has been preparing me very well for college." Learning beyond school: "I took a summer mathematics course at the University of Michigan. I also took trigonometry at FIU through Scheck Hillel's dual enrollment program." Looking ahead: "Soccer is a big passion...playing at the Maccabi Games in Israel was a beautiful experience. I plan on playing wherever I go, but I will choose the college that offers the best academic program for me."
YAEL SEFCOVICH, GRADE 10
ZACHARY LEMMER, GRADE 8 Interests: Literature, science, baseball Learning beyond school: "Reading is really fun, it's like watching a movie, but you get to imagine it yourself. It expands your vocabulary a lot. I've always liked to read." Learning beyond school: "I like action books...the most recent book I read is Rick Riordan's Magnus Chase." Key learning skills: "Beyond learning vocabulary, reading exercises your brain, and teaches empathy and life skills through the characters. I want to continue reading more."
SADIE SLOMOVITZ, GRADE 8 Interests: English, math, science Sadie earned third place in the school science fair and advanced to district competition. "My science project explored the effect of video game playing on level of accuracy using the Da Vinci Robot simulator. I found that subjects who played video games before using the simulator were 10% more accurate than those who didn't." Learning beyond school: "I am in the sewing club at Scheck Hillel and I also take classes after school. I have designed clothes and volunteered at a design summer camp." Key learning skills: "Organization and creativity. I color code things so I know what I need to cover."
JAIME MIZRAHI, GRADE 7
Interests: English, social sciences, Israeli folk dancing "I feel I can be more creative within these subjects. Rabbi Koperwas (Josh Koperwas, Upper School Judaic Studies teacher) suggested I read Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl, and I learned about logotherapy. I was able to discuss this subject with my grandmother, who is a psychologist".
Interests: Gemara, math, basketball
Learning beyond school: "Following the Scheck Hillel Grade 9 trip to Israel, I spent a week working in WIZO-sponsored centers. Then I had the opportunity to perform in the opening of the Maccabi Games in Israel. These experiences had educational, personal and social impact for me."
Jaime is looking forward to playing basketball for Scheck Hillel this season.
Key learning skills: "Listening, but also thinking creatively on my own..."
Learning beyond school: "I learn Gemara outside of school. I enjoy toiling over a question, and it may take a few weeks of study. Getting to the answer is great, but I enjoy the process even more."
Key learning skill: "Reviewing is important. That is how the material stays with you."
