Chemistry of Light

Written by Dr. Jonathan Friedman Upper School Chemistry/STEM Teacher

In a recent chemistry lab, our students conducted flame tests to identify various substances by the color they produce in a flame. When chemicals are heated, they emit characteristic colors of light which provide a “fingerprint” to help identify a specific compound. Along the way, students realized they were also learning the fundamentals of fireworks, as both utilize high temperatures to generate a variety of bright colors. For example, purple fireworks can be created by using strontium compounds (red) mixed with copper compounds (blue). This hands-on lab further solidified understanding of the chemistry of light.

A shoe for the blind, powered by GPS, developed by Liat Kirsch. The Double Duo, an electric wall outlet that hides a safe, by Jacqueline Gorin. And a Seg Clean, a cross between a Segway and a vacuum cleaner, envisioned by Moises Sutton. These are only a few of the prototypes created by 100 Grade 6 students and presented in Scheck Hillel’s Cardboard Inventive Product Showcase this fall. Students were challenged to design housewares, wearables or electronic accessories and to bring them to life using cardboard and recycled materials. “The students really impressed us throughout

this challenge,” said Scheck Hillel’s Design Department Chair Elana Lazar. “They will be part of transforming and improving our future. Their ideas and creativity were endless, and their enthusiasm helped drive their design process.” This challenge is one component of Scheck Hillel’s overall Design/STEM curriculum.

Preserving Tradition Through Innovation ...‫ישראל‬

Using modeling software to create 3D digital models of mezuzah cases, Grade 8 Design/ STEM students printed unique designs to shelter mezuzah scrolls and adorn doorposts: 21st century technology applied to ancient tradition.

iLab: A Hub for Inspiration and Innovation eHillel.org - Scheck Hillel Community School Page 4

Scheck Hillel’s iLab is a dedicated space for inspiration, creativity and innovation, designed to extend classroom learning in an environment of collaboration and experimentation. Lower School students engage in developmentally sequenced activities that connect to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics), including coding, game design and robotics. Upper School students learn and hone engineering concepts. The iLab is equipped with technology and a maker wall, a storehouse of reusable materials students curate to turn their ideas into prototypes. The opportunities are endless.

Inventing For Good Using the design process, Grade 8 Design/STEM students stepped up to a challenge presented by CADENA, a nonprofit sponsored by Mexico’s Jewish community, to generate ideas for products to help vulnerable people cope before, during or after natural disasters. Aliya DelCastillo, one of the student designers, explained they created 3D digital prototypes and then one-sheets describing their solutions. Some of these included an underground water pump, a shatterproof supply box, a beeping locator, and a book drive to provide uninterrupted learning after a crisis. Top Scheck Hillel projects will be competing with other submissions, and one winner will be announced at Expo CADENA in March 2017.

Yoga

Storytelling

Through story-based yoga sessions, Scheck Hillel’s Early Childhood students develop pre-literacy skills while deriving the physical and mental health benefits of yoga as a form of exercise. “With this program, the children are connecting pre-literacy skills with kinesiology and creativity. Those connections help them not only to understand the story, but also to visualize it and take it with them,” said Dr. Monica Wagenberg, Head of Scheck Hillel’s Lower School. The program is taught by Lower School teacher Leanne Weinbrot.

Blended Learning eHillel.org - Scheck Hillel Community School Page 7

Grade 5 teacher Jenna Kraft applies Scheck Hillel’s philosophy to personalize instruction in her Math class. She does so through a station-rotation blended learning model. While one student group practices skills through real-time digital learning, another works in the teacher-led practice station. Adaptive technology and face-toface instruction help her track student progress and tweak instruction accordingly. She is one of the site-based teacher coaches participating in JBlend Miami, a multiphased project aimed at bringing blended and personalized learning to Jewish day schools in the area, co-sponsored by a grant from CAJE and the Digital Learning Network.
