elcome to the first issue of Influencer Magazine! We have developed our publication on the basis that although we may be inexorably moving from the print to a digital medium that the concept, structure and presentation of information in the magazine format remains both valid and enjoyable to read. In fact, one positive outcome of the tragic pandemic that has affected all of us this past eighteen months has been the desire of people to consume information – whether watching TV shows about travel and other activities derailed by the pandemic or seeking news on current events, people still want to feel informed, educated about what they care Photo by Rob Rich about and feel engaged with the world. The aim of Influencer Magazine is to inform and educate our readership the people, places and objects that can, do and will shape our world. Our geographic coverage is primarily European and North American scope though as the opportunity to achieve reportage in other locales grows so too will the content follow. In journalism school one of the most basic concepts is the Whom, Where, What and of course Why – for our publication we focus on the Whom through the lens of the Influencer – what makes them think, the forces that shape them and their objectives. A is for Art debuts in Southampton

S

outhampton is now home to A is for Art. Modern American artist and designer Walter Sternlieb has opened the Hampton’s hottest new gallery, and is part of the village’s strong legacy with backing of curated collaborations in the community. Sternlieb celebrated the opening with cocktails amongst friends and art enthusiasts. The opening coincided with the launch of Philip Greenwald’s HiWave, the inperson networking phone sticker. Located at 60 Jobs Lane in Southampton, New York, A is for Art brings to life the prolific vision of Sternileib, who is known out East as a respected designer, builder, woodworker, and master craftsman. Now, his latest title as industrial artist will only further plant his applaudable achievements. His charismatic work on display was brought forth by ingenuity and creativity. “I woke up one morning with this idea of a 3-dimensional flag, made a prototype of it, then built it, painted it and hung it,” Sternlieb states. Photo courtesy of Walter Sternlieb The specific vision of the then novice artist led to a series that includes his iconic pieces “The Staircase,” and “5 Hearts.” Eventually, he established a professional portfolio that was so large it took up all of his wall space in his home where he displayed pieces. The colorful collection impressed visiting friends and fans and eventually led to thoughts of opening up a gallery to showcase his work. Sternlieb’s expressive 3-dimensional paintings encompass powerful expressions full of rich color and bold design. The bright shapes are pops of color that bring bliss to anyone who uses them as part of the design of a home or office space. The dazzling and virtuosic collection comes from a special place in Sternlieb’s personal history that many can relate to and why his artwork stands out as a popular choice to art collectors.

est-selling author, animal rights activist and actress Leesa Rowland recently celebrated the release of her new book at T-Bar Southampton. Serbian Star Soprano Marija Jelic Makes American Debut at carnegie hall

S

erbian rising star soprano Marija Jelic recently made her American premiere at the legendary Carnegie Hall, presented by New York Artist Management. Her grand debut in the states highlighted an enchanting evening of music alongside American pianist Anthony Manoli. “Power of Destiny” showcased Rachmaninoff’s Russian songs, opera arias written by master composers Verdi and Puccini including repertoire from Turandot, Madame Butterfly, Forza del destino, and Otello. The audience was enamored by Jelic’s performance, giving her and Manoli immense ovations between each number. Notable attendees included Serbian consuls Olgica Vlacic and Tamara Vujovic, as well as philanthropist Jean Shafiroff. Jelic has performed with Jonathan Tetelman, and this season has sung alongside Elīna Garanča, Placido Domingo and Jose Cura. Her impressive and emotive sound will be highlighted with her renowned acting abilities as she takes the stage. Classical takes of each song will impress all ages in the audience with relatable movements and stunning renditions by the soprano. A beautiful tapestry of music throughout the night was created by the artist who has a unique background and history. Jelic was born in Belgrade, Republic of Serbia. Later in life she completed a Faculty of Electrical engineering at University of Belgrade and learned singing as she finished master studies in opera. In 2017, Jelic passed an audition for an opera studio in the National Theater in Belgrade and started to sing small and main roles in opera productions. Jelic was performing in the opening of Ohrid summer festival 2020, Beethoven 9th symphony in Plovdiv summer festival, Micaela in Carmen concert version with Elina Garanca in Ljubljana summer festival 2021, concert with Jerusalem symphony orchestra and production of La Boheme with role of Mimi in Israel and Estonia in 2021.

While most of New York’s famous arts institutions are reopening with limited capacity and timed ticketing, AD ART SHOW at the Oculus at Westfield World Trade Center offered art

This is the fourth year that the NY based innovative art venture has presented its AD ART SHOW, which is dedicated to creating new opportunities for artists, art lovers and brands to discover each other and form powerful partnerships. T

he third Annual Times Square Fashion Week recently took place at Father Duffy Square in the heart of Times Square. Fashion and Philanthropy Icon Jean Shafiroff, who emceed last year’s event, took part in this year’s fabulous event as the Mistress of Ceremonies. Shafiroff was introduced and presented Gale Brewer, President of the Manhattan Borough with the “I Love NY Leadership award.” Over 1,000 attendees were on hand to see the runway show from designers Cesar Galindo, House of Barretti, Gloria Lee, and Raphelita. The event was a combination of street runway, digital shows on billboards, double decker bus, and a finale cocktail event! There was a live performance featuring awardwinning TV host and Broadway performer, Cindy Ashton. Chuck ’s Vintage celebrates NYC flagship retail store debut

T

he iconic California-based Chuck’s Vintage has recently brought classic style to Manhattan with a grand celebration honoring the legacy of the brand. Invited guests toasted the arrival of Chuck’s Vintage at a private party at Classic Cars of Manhattan. Notable VIP attendees gathered at Pier 76 for a night of old-school fun and modern twists that will mix the time-honored vibes of the brand with edgy New York City fashion tones. There was also a special live entertainment from DJ Lee Kalt and vocalist Xandra K. The festivities toasted the Xandra K and DJ Lee Kalt, Rob Rich Society Allure opening flagship retail outlet, as well as the illustrious career of Chuck’s Vintage founder, Madeline Cammarata. Hailing from a fashion background as a renowned model, Cammarata found a powerful niche in the world of denim. Her style sensibilities provided an instrumental foundation for fabric development with powerful brands like 7 For All Mankind. In 2006, she started Chuck’s Vintage, which became a true American original overnight. Her abundant collection became treasured wear for celebrities and business elites from Steve Jobs to famous musicians such as Dolly Parton, Robert Plant, Morrisey and more. From the famous to

just pure classic style lovers, they have all at one point crossed the threshold of Chuck’s Vintage in the California hotspot shop — where even once a world-renowned denim archivist saw fit to entrust Cammarata with millions of dollars’ worth of collectible denim that she proudly sold. Vinnie Cammarata, husband of the Chuck’s Vintage creator who passed from a sudden illness, helped host the party that paid tribute to both Cammarata and the iconic business. James DiPrima, who is the business proprietor and Current CEO of GreenStream, was also in attendance. The soiree celebrated the new store’s collection of vintage denim that has to be seen to be believed. The blue jeans in the Upper East Side location will range from Strongholds found in the California Gold Rush mines to World War II-Era Levi’s, Lees, and Wranglers, as well as 1960’s ladies high-waisted and groovy deadstock Levi’s bells. Chuck’s will also showcase the founder’s sampling of vintage American workwear: rugged military and work boots, buttery leather bomber jackets, and soft, perfectly worn-in vintage ’70s rock tees. Classic American Cool. Setting up its new flagship retail outlet in North America’s premier luxury district, Chuck’s Vintage will soon become a New York City favorite place to shop for time-honored clothing. Doors officially open in October at 173 East 91st Street in New York. Plans to reopen a new store in California are anticipated in 2022.

T

he Cura Collective hosted a sunset cruise aboard Sailing Yacht Ventura, that left from the North Cove Marina to celebrate its newly launched Female Philanthropy Initiative. Cura was founded in April 2020 by five friends (Lizzie Asher, Nora Boyd, Mercedes de Guardiola, Casey Kohlberg and Laura Day Webb) in response to the pandemic, out of a desire to do more to help those most hard hit in New York City last spring. Last year saw Cura deliver tens of thousands of meals in the greater New York City area, originally to hospitals and expanding to support kids facing food insecurity. With the rising threat of the Delta Variant, the Cura Collective wanted to recognize some of the women who did extraordinary work under the hardships of the pandemic. While celebrating the reopening of the city, Cura hopes to also celebrate heroic deeds women accomplished that have gotten less recognition. Under the gaze of Lady Liberty herself, all guests toasted the three honorees of the evening as they sailed past lower Manhattan into New York Harbor. The evening featured designer Patricia Bonaldi of Pat.Bo, known for her work in her home country of Brazil for female empowerment. Her efforts nearly a decade ago led to the founding of a school in her hometown of Uberlandia where women were taught the art of embroidery and painting. Bonaldi’s school boasts today 400 artisans who are responsible for the couture craftsmanship of her eponymous line. The arduous work of Susan Hale of Bellevue Hospital was also highlighted. Hale partnered with the Cura Collective team coordinating logistics of meal deliveries sourced from the Nomad Hotel to the hospital staff. Finally, Naila Amin, whose strenuous lobbying during the lockdown shepherded legislation that was adopted by the New York State legislature to ban the practice of child marriage under the age of 18, was heralded for her work. Guests were treated to red-hued cocktails concocted with gracious donations by Campari, Aperol and Macchu Pisco. Waxman Foundation raises $180k toward Cancer Research

T

he Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation (SWCRF) recently held its 39th Annual Golf Tournament at the scenic Fresh Meadow Country Club in Lake Success, New York. It was a beautiful day for a round of golf and a reception as funds raised supported the SWCRF collaborative cancer research programs, and expand its investments in funding new, more effective, and less toxic cancer treatments. Sadly, the incidence of cancer is increasing worldwide. It is estimated that 1.8 million Americans – or more than 4,900 every day – will receive a cancer diagnosis this year. In 2020, the SWCRF directed more than $2.2 million in donor-supported funds to fund a record 50 research scientists at some of the world’s leading research institutions. The SWCRF research programs address more than 14 types of cancer and require that those who receive research funding collaborate with labs outside of their disciplines and institutions. The annual charity outing benefits not-for-profits that work in the field of cancer research and care including the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and East End Hospice. Michael Bosso, senior vice president, operations, U.S. Office Division, Brookfield Properties, was honored as the 2021 ALF Business Honoree. Scotty Medlock, Hall of Fame sports artist, was honored as the 2021 ALF Sports Honoree Award. “I am honored to have been selected by the committee to be this year’s Business Honoree,” says Bosso. “I have supported the outing for the past 10 years, and I have been amazed by the commitment from Ann and her team to raise awareness for cancer research. Cancer is a dreaded disease and we need to stamp it out. The money that is raised from this charity tournament benefits many organizations such as St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, The Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation, to name a few. My hope is that one day we will find a cure, and cancer will be a disease of the past. This can only be accomplished by raising awareness supporting such great organizations like this. In her welcome thanking Trevor Drinkwater- Inclusion Companies, Jewel explains, “I wanted to begin a festival to help educate others on eating well, and teaching others to advocate for themselves. I wanted to help others by teaching them, that good mental and emotional hygiene was an option, which set me out on a mission in life to get those skills. The Viennese Opera Ball hosts 2021 Golden Age gala

T

he Viennese Opera Ball recently hosted its Swing Dinner Dance Gala, “The Golden Age,” at a private club in Manhattan. Due to the events of the past year, the gala was scaled down from previous years with limited capacity but was a great return of the extravagant affair. The Viennese Opera Ball is a nonprofit association under Section 501(c)(3) and celebrated under the auspices of the US Austrian Chamber of Commerce. The Gala Chair for the evening was philanthropist Jean Shafiroff, and Denise Rich. Each year, it supports charitable projects that are connected to communities in New York or Vienna. The proceeds benefited the Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation for Cancer Research. The gala took place with the support of City of Vienna and the Honorary Gala Chair, Governor and Mayor of Vienna, The Honorable Michael Ludwig, Consul General of Austria in New York, The Honorable Helene Steinhaeusl, and the Director of the Austrian Cultural Forum New York Michael Haider. There was a silent auction during gala with proceeds also benefiting Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation for Cancer Research. The Viennese Opera Ball, an annual white-tie charity gala celebrates the cultural and economic relationships between Austria and America, connecting two continents, two cities and two centuries in one glamorous

night. It was founded by Austrians immigrating to the United States 66 years ago and is a tribute to both their former hometown Vienna and host city, New York. Considered the most prestigious and oldest Viennese ball outside of Vienna, the gala draws an international audience that includes diplomats and dignitaries, international corporations, and professionals. ealth Advocates for Older People’s New York Treasures Gala recently took place at a private club in Manhattan. The festive event was a momentous affair with guests enjoying cocktails and dinner. Co-chairs Leonard Van Lowe and Richard S. Johnson, along with Executive Director, Nancy Houghton, helped host the benefit that honored the three Health Advocates’ 2021 New York Treasures that include Jean Shafiroff, Evan A. Davis, and Rebecca Myers Thomas. Houghton states, “We are excited to be celebrating 36 years of providing tools, techniques, and support for the City’s seniors to help them to age with vitality and independence.” The honorees hold an impressive number of achievements. Jean Shafiroff is a philanthropist, humanitarian, TV host, writer, and the author of the book “Successful Philanthropy: How to Make a Life By What You Give.” Shafiroff is often referred to as “the first lady of philanthropy” by the press because of her generosity and extensive work as a volunteer fundraiser and leader in the philanthropic world. She serves on the boards of many charitable organizations and each year chairs upwards of eight different charity galas. Among the many causes she champions are those involved in women’s rights, rights of the underserved, health care, and animal welfare. Evan A. Davis has clerked for Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart and served in the administration of New York City Mayor John Lindsay as Chief of the Law Department’s Consumer Protection Division. He served 12 years as a member of Columbia University Board of Directors and was a partner at Cleary Gottlieb LLP. He also served as Counsel to Governor Mario M. Cuomo.

Rebecca Myers Thomas has served on numerous nonprofit boards including the Junior League of the City of New York, the London Service League, the Civil Support Division of the Legal Aid Society, Musica Sacra, the Gateway School, and Berkshire Choral Festival. She partnered with Dr. Nina Lief in beginning one of the earliest childhood development programs, “From 0 to 3” which became the model for measuring growth in the first three years of a child’s life. “I am so pleased to be able to support the work of Health Advocates for Older People. They provide tools, techniques, and support so that all people can thrive with vitality and independence,”says Shafiroff. “Life for the aged can be particularly difficult. I am very impressed with the dedication of their staff headed by Executive Director, Nancy Houghton. Health Advocates provides free programs that help our neighborhood elderly to remain independent and in control of their aging process. I am truly honored to be honored by Health Advocates.” Additionally, Elizabeth (Betsy) Timberman received the organization’s Josephine N. McFadden Volunteer of the Year award. She has been a volunteer for Health Advocates for over 10 years and currently chairs the agency’s Advisory Board. Special recognition was also granted to Simone Hannah-Clarke, a nurse at Mount Sinai Hospital, who was interviewed by Anderson Cooper of CNN and will be representing the essential workers who have kept the city afloat during the time of the COVID-19 pandemic. There were fantastic auction items up for bid including: an evening musicale with world-renowned cellist, Christine Walevska; an oil painting by Hunt Slonem; an experience in Newport aboard one of the America’s Cup 12 Meter Yachts; and a tour of Master Printer Kathy Caraccio’s studio. Funds raised at the gala benefited Health Advocates for Older People, which for 36 years has promoted safe and healthy aging through programs designed to facilitate independent living, physical well-being, and greater social interaction. The organization proudly provides exercise classes to build balance, strength and flexibility, and home safety assessments to help seniors remain at home safely. asey Kohlberg, Lizzie Asher, and the Young Friends of Save Venice hosted Murano Nights, an intimate dinner at Casa Cipriani, the newly opened member’s club and celebrity hotspot in New York City’s landmark Battery-Maritime building. The evening was to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Save Venice, which in lieu of the pandemic related postponement of its usual black tie masquerade gala, is hosting over 50 smaller dinners and parties across the world. Murano Nights included 50 of Save Venice’s fashionable younger supporters from art and fashion to film and media for a cocktail hour, ballet performance by dancers from the Brooklyn Ballet, and dinner. Attire was billed as ‘Glittering Cocktail’, as a nod to the Murano Glass which lent its name to 24 INFLUENCER MAGAZINE • FALL/WINTER 2022

the theme, and the glamorous young people about town definitely delivered on the dress code. “It’s been a pretty crazy year and a half,” says host Casey Kohlberg in a sparkling Carolina Herrera cocktail dress. “But I’m honestly so excited to be able to see friends and dress up again. Plus Save Venice is a cause so close to my heart it makes it feel all the more special.” Save Venice Young Friends Chair Lizzie Asher, shimmering in a PatBo dress, followed the welcome remarks by sharing the myriad of restoration accomplishments Save Venice has had during its 50 years: “Save Venice has indeed been saving Venice one masterpiece at a time.” Notable guests included: Patina Miller, Serena Goh, Krystal Bick, Amir Taghi, Denise Baca, Tai Cheng, Daniel Kibblesmith, Jennifer Wright, Savannah Engel, Alyson Cafiero, Laura Day Webb, Timo Weiland, Mercedes de Guardiola, Clare Ngai, Daniel Howard, Irina EickeKrylova, and Maximilian Eicke. No detail was left uncurated as evidenced by the cocktail list of the evening that featured the classic Cipriani Bellini and a white Negroni (a nother nod to the glass that Murano is known for), with a wine pairing menu provided by Kobrand Wines and Spirits during dinner. The menu featured fall fare of risotto with saffron and dover sole with baby artichokes, grown on the Venetian Island of Torcello where Save Venice is currently restoring the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta. Proceeds from the evening helped fund the restoration. Guests enjoyed a performance by the Brooklyn Ballet titled Sonic Relief, aka You Had To Be There, before sitting for dinner. The piece by New Orleans-born composer Malcom Parson features a gliding ebb and flow between the sound; the dancers’ movement is reminiscent of a midnight gondola ride through the canals of Venice. Choreographed by Lynn Parkerson, founding Artistic Director of the Brooklyn Ballet, the performance featured dancers Audrey Borst, James “Floats” Fable, Miku Kawamura, Christine Sawyer, Ladell “Ocean” Thomas. Remarks by host Casey Kohlberg and Young Friend Chair Lizzie Asher closed out the evening. Gift bags included items from BONBONWHIMS, PatBo, Dior, covidfriendly Save Venice masks, and mini bottles of olive oil from the hostess’ family home near Woodside, California.
