Patricia Silverstein
Patricia Silverstein, Co-Founder and President of the Silverstein Dream Foundation and Board Member of The Cure Alliance presented at a conference panel in the Hamptons on the subject of, “New Frontiers in the cure and prevention to the Global pandemic: Diabetes.”
Today Diabetes is widely regarded as having become a global pandemic. Globally 543 Million people have diabetes, The number of sufferers are predicted to increase to 655 Million by 2030 and as high as 745 Million by 2040. in the United States of America one in three people are expected to develop diabetes sometime in their life.
When Patricia’s younger sister was diagnosed with diabetes at a young age, she decided to act and devote her efforts to help raise awareness and funds to help find a cure. When her sister, who was not even 30, had kidney failure, Patricia felt fortunate enough to work with doctors to help her sister receive a successful transplant that saved her life.
“My sister told me to find strength and a cure as I helped raise money for the cause. The intimate work we are doing with the medical field and dedicated group of doctors leads me to firmly believe we will soon find a cure and stop this horrible disease from harming others.”
In her conference presentation, Patricia made several powerful statements about the advancements in medical science, “How would it be living in a world where we can predict and prevent breast cancer, autoimmune diseases, and diabetes before it appears in our bodies? A decade ago we did not have an answer to this question, but today we do. Today we have testing and technology that can already detect type 1 diabetes antibodies, before it has been diagnosed. The new testing is called stage 0 for type 1, by knowing the results today, we can apply treatment and protocols with protective substances like vitamin D and omega 3 purified fish oils, and lifestyle changes that will delay or halt the appearance of the disease tomorrow.”
The approach of the Silverstein Dream Foundation is the belief that one way to a cure is prevention, with a
prevention program which focuses on proving evidence on higher genetic predisposition for diabetes in younger generations, by testing type 1, Omega 3, vitamin D markers and inflammation in young adults.
The Foundation believes health authorities would likely agree that implementing mandatory pediatric screening for all children between 1 and 18 years of age to detect those with type 1 diabetes antibodies, is key to stop the third largest cause of death in the US.
As we continue to focus on funding and supporting the cure focused research for diabetes, the prevention program is now at the frontline of the Foundation’s efforts to reduce the impact of these alarming predictions for the growth in diabetes cases in future generations.”

NO CAMOUFLAGING THE SKILLS OF DESIGNER CHRIS MENA OR MODEL ELTON ILIRJANI DISPLAYING THIS EXCITING NEW RUNWAY COLLECTION
Supermodel Elton Ilirjani returned to the Catwalk during New York Fashion Week to walk for Chris Mena, premiering his NO PASSWORD Urban Camo collection.
“Urban Camo” is a unisex, readyto-wear collection designed and manufactured by luxury, sustainable-
streetwear designer Chris Mena, that recontextualizes camouflage within city environments. Drawing inspiration from urban deterioration and the United States Military Complex, the throughlines of this collection showcase motifs commonly found in graffiti, discarded objects, and architectural decay. “Urban Camo” features experimental print design through the process of traditional industrial print manufacturing. Further pushing the print manipulation and the material foundation of the collection, Mena employs a diverse range of print distortion methods such as hand
painting, rust-dyeing, and physical print distressing, allowing the wearer to conceptually hide in plain sight within the ever-changing complex landscape that is the modern metropolis.
“Mena” by designer Chris Mena is a highend sustainable fashion brand based in New York, using recycled garments, and sustainable sourced fabric that are all constructed using a traditional cut & sew method. Making his first debut in NYFW 2016, he immediately caught the attention of HighSnobiety, and later made an appearance on America’s Next Top Model. The Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation’s (SWCRF) 42nd Annual Golf Tournament took place at the scenic Fresh Meadow Country Club in Lake Success, NY. More than 100 participants and numerous supporters raised more than $250,000 in support of SWCRF cancer research initiatives such as the Institute Without WallsTM, the International Network for Aging and Cancer Research, and the SWCRF Women’s Cancer Research Program. However, despite significant progress in prevention, cancer incidence is increasing worldwide. To combat this, SWCRF directed more than $2.3 million in donor-supported funds to some of the world’s leading research institutions and scientists this year alone. Unique
to SWCRF, funded investigators must collaborate with labs outside of their focus to help accelerate the pace of discovering new treatments.
Dennis A. Herman, Chairman and CEO of Beekman International Center, Ltd. and Gary Jacob, Executive VP Glenwood Management Corp. co-chaired the SWCRF Golf Tournament. Mr. Herman and Mr. Jacob are members of the SWCRF Board of Directors. The golf committee

SWCRF 3RD ANNUAL KIDS CANCEL CANCER EVENTLED BY TEENAGE ADVOCATES RAISES $70,000 FOR PEDIATRIC CANCER RESEARCH
The 3rd annual Kids Cancel Cancer, benefiting the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation (SWCRF), took place on Saturday October 26th, 2024 at Frames Bowling Lounge in New York City. In addition to raising $70,000 for critical pediatric cancer research, the event was an entertaining afternoon of bowling, ping pong, billiards, karaoke, games, auctions, great food and more.
“This event stands out from other SWCRF fundraisers because it was created and organized by kids. The Kids Cancel Cancer fundraiser enables the Foundation to support the groundbreaking work of two top pediatric cancer scientists—one at St. Jude’s Research Hospital and the other at Schneider Children’s Medical Center in Israel, who have worked collaboratively for many years to discover new, less toxic treatments,” said Marion Waxman, event founder.
While pediatric cancer deaths have declined by 65 percent over the past few decades, cancer remains a leading cause of death for children and teenagers. In fact, it is estimated that 10,500 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed among children (birth to 14 years old) each year, and about 1,190 children will die from the disease.
Additionally, a recent study published in Aging AND Cancer found that childhood cancer survivors experience serious health issues in adult life, much earlier than their counterparts who did not have cancer as a kid. “This is why prioritizing research to develop new treatments for childhood cancer is so urgent,” said Mrs. Waxman.
Notable Attendees included: Mischa Abend, Abey Fuks, Ava Litman, Hayley Silvers, Jean Shafiroff, Lori Levine, Scott Levine, William T. Sullivan, Howie Schwartz.

Chef Chikara Sono is not new to the world of haute cuisine. Having worked in prestigious kitchens throughout
Japan and the United States, Chef Sono’s career is a testament to his mastery of the fine arts of sushi, kaiseki, and kappo cuisine. Before opening Kappo Sono, he earned accolades as executive chef of several Michelin-starred restaurants, where he was praised for his ability to fuse classical Japanese techniques with contemporary culinary trends. His cooking has been described as a harmonious balance between simplicity and complexity, with every dish telling a story through its carefully sourced ingredients and exquisite presentation.
Chef Sono’s philosophy is deeply rooted in the idea that food should not just be eaten but experienced. His passion for
the kappo method — which emphasizes direct interaction between chef and guest — allows diners to witness the skill and artistry that goes into every bite. At Kappo Sono, Chef Sono personally engages with his guests, explaining the nuances of each dish and the inspiration behind it. This personal touch, coupled with his culinary prowess, makes every visit to Kappo Sono a memorable event.
Kappo Sono’s menu is a testament to the chef’s commitment to seasonality and the highest quality ingredients. The cuisine is deeply rooted in the kappo tradition, where precision and preparation are key. The word “kappo” literally translates to “cut and cook,” a style of cooking where the chef prepares a multi-course meal using a variety of
techniques, from grilling and frying to steaming and simmering, in front of the diner.
Chef Sono’s multi-course tasting menus, or kaiseki, are a culinary tour de force, featuring the finest seafood, meats, and produce, much of which is sourced from Japan. From melt-in-your-mouth otoro (fatty tuna) to perfectly marbled wagyu beef, each ingredient is treated with the utmost respect, ensuring that its natural flavors shine through. The menu changes with the seasons, reflecting Chef Sono’s dedication to showcasing the freshest ingredients at their peak.
A hallmark of the dining experience at Kappo Sono is the attention to detail in every dish. From the handcrafted
Japanese ceramic plates that beautifully complement each course to the precise knife work and elegant garnishes, the aesthetic of each dish is as important as its taste. Chef Sono believes that a meal should engage all the senses, and his approach to plating transforms every course into a work of art.
The ambiance at Kappo Sono further enhances the sense of exclusivity and intimacy. The restaurant features an elegant, minimalist design, with only twelve seats and a single sitting that allows Chef Sono to focus on each guest’s experience. The open kitchen, where Chef Sono performs his culinary magic, offers diners a frontrow seat to watch their meals come to life. Soft lighting, natural wood finishes, and contemporary Japanese art adorn the space, creating a serene atmosphere that serves as the perfect backdrop for the unforgettable dining experience.
Kappo Sono also boasts an exceptional sake and wine selection, curated to complement the complex flavors of the cuisine. Expertly paired with the kaiseki menu, each sake enhances the depth and complexity of the dishes, making for a perfectly balanced meal.
Since its opening, Kappo Sono has quickly become a favorite among New York’s gastronomic elite. It is not only a place to eat but a place to immerse oneself in the rich cultural traditions of Japan, all while enjoying the luxury and innovation of contemporary fine dining. Chef Chikara Sono’s artistry, combined with the intimate setting and unparalleled attention to detail, ensures that Kappo Sono will remain a standout destination in the city’s culinary landscape for years to come.
