EDIBLES THE BEST TASTES OF THE CITY

It’s been said that oysters bring out the passion in people. Restaurateur Ford Fry would likely agree. His newest restaurant, BeetleCat, is a trendy, approachable oyster bar in Inman Park that’s as casual as it is impressive. The downstairs houses a warmly lit cocktail lounge complete with wood paneling (reminiscent of, dare we say, a man cave). Emerge from the downstairs cabin onto the main deck, see the sunlight flooding through those massive windows, breathe in that fresh seafood smell, and you just might forget for a second that you’re in a landlocked city. And that’s before you’ve even tasted anything. From baked oysters with bacon, Parmesan, and Swiss chard to ginger-curried shrimp, the dishes are creative and exciting enough that the décor can only try and keep up. -Alex Dollard

UMI

Buckhead 3050 Peachtree Road NW umiatlanta.com

If you’ve ever heard of or experienced Umi, the acclaimed sushi spot in Buckhead hailed by USA Today as “Atlanta’s finest sushi restaurant,” then you probably know what people are saying: Atlanta now has a sushi restaurant that can stand up to the establishments of Los Angeles and New York, and hold its own. If not, we have news for you: Atlanta now has a sushi restaurant that can stand up to the establishments of Los Angeles and New York and hold its own. The interior, designed by Atlanta artist Todd Murphy, is simple, rustic and organic, and perfectly compliments the menu, which is crafted by master

chef Fuyuhiko Ito. Kobe beef rolls, baked lobster tempura, seared foie gras and sesame ice cream are among your many dining options. The food plays according to the traditional philosophy of sushi: ultimate simplicity leads to ultimate depth of flavor. That means few ingredients, with each one being of the highest possible quality so they can each shine through properly. One could say Chef Ito’s job is to intervene with the food as little as possible, to stand back and let the flavors make their own point. And they do. Given that sushi restaurants today are as ubiquitous as anything, it’s a spectacular achievement.

CALLIE’S HOT LITTLE BISCUITS Virginia-Highland 1004 Virginia Ave. NE calliesbiscuits.com

Callie’s Hot Little Biscuits are just as sexy as whatever image just went through your mind when you read that name. They’re varied, creative, petite and, oh yeah, delicious. With sweet flavors like blackberry, cinnamon and peach next to savory guys like country ham and black pepper bacon (let’s not forget the classics, buttermilk, and cheese and chive), it’s impossible you won’t find one you like. Founded in Charleston, this gourmet mini-biscuit eatery has finally made its way to Atlanta and set up shop. Here’s to many bright, biscuit-filled mornings ahead.

Bread & Butterfly, the Euro-style bistro/bakery brought to you by Billy Alin, the James Beard semifinalist behind Cakes & Ale, follows in the footsteps of its big-brother restaurant to serve locally sourced food, crafted with care. With fresh pastries, strong espresso and savory entrées (like braised duck parmentier), it has the same clean, thoughtful appeal. And with former Cakes & Ale sous chef Bryan Stoffelen at the helm, the food is guaranteed to make an impression, and so will the dining room. It’s like a portrait of European

One thing that’s always stood out is their breads, made in-house. Hence the good news: This year, they opened their own bakery, TGM Bread, in the space next door. Headed by master baker and 2016 James Beard Outstanding Baker semifinalist Rob Alexander, the 2,000-square-foot space will produce all the bread for The General Muir, Fred’s Meat & Bread, Yalla and West Egg Cafe, and also offer a lunch menu of its own.

Inside Krog Street Market, where everyone’s vying for attention, Ticonderoga Club resides quietly in its corner, content, waiting for their customers to come to them. It has a laid-back, slightly tropical vibe with no frills; think Hemingway in his Key West years. Depending on your priorities, it’s either a restaurant with interesting cocktails or a cocktail bar with tasty dinner food. The cuisine is American seafood with the occasional Asian twist. SPIRITS BEST LOCAL BEVERAGES

NEGRONI WEEK The Negroni: one part Campari, one part vermouth, one part gin — a classic, indispensable cocktail. And yet, there are a thousand ways to pay homage to the classic elixir and a thousand mixologists claiming the best recipe in bar. So why not do more with this three-part saga, like hold a week-long festival in its honor? So here we are, toasting to the fourth year of Negroni Week, an annual celebration of the classy cocktail celebrated across Atlanta at establishments like Seasons 52, Sugo Restaurant, JCT Kitchen & Bar, Marcel, The Optimist, The General Muir, Beetlecat, The Iberian Pig and One Eared Stag (a total of 419 restaurants and bars around the world). The festival does more than encourage a healthy glass of Campari; proceeds from sales are donated to various charities and nonprofit organizations, including local causes like Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Relay for Life and The Giving Kitchen. Ostensibly it’s in honor of the Negroni and its greatness, but really the festival is simply an effort to do some good for people who really need it. Seven days, three ingredients, one simple way to give back.

HIMITSU

Himitsu (which means “secret” in Japanese) is the new cocktail lounge brought to you by the masterminds behind Umi, the acclaimed Buckhead sushi restaurant.

Buckhead 3050 Peachtree Road NW puraibeto.com/himitsu

Located just a few doors over, it’s meant to compliment a night out at Umi, but that doesn’t mean it depends on its big brother restaurant for style points. Inspired by the Todd Murphy painting “King of Birds,” the interior is dark and theatrical. The cocktail menu, which emphasizes Shokunin Kishitsu, or unwavering devotion to one’s craft, is designed by world-renowned cocktail maestro Shingo Gokan. But don’t go calling an Uber just yet, because here’s the kicker: Himitsu is invitation only. It’s exclusive more by necessity than by choice (we think), so if you get the chance to go, then go. This isn’t your neighborhood dive bar. -Alex Dollard

NARS

NARS has always had a flare for shock value — Orgasm Blush, anyone? But we’d like to think it’s not so surprising that the cosmetics brand chose The Shops

at Buckhead Atlanta for its eighth boutique location. Designed by Fabien Baron and Mr. Nars, the space is wholly impressive. White glossy floors and walls are stylishly interrupted by bursts of chrome, black and Jungle Red (an iconic NARS lipstick shade), adding dimension and shine to the boutique. And the lighting plan was conceived with the help of engineers who studied the space and the amount of natural light that shone through to ensure the perfect setting for makeup application. Makeup artists personally trained by Mr. Nars are there to assist and there’s even a private room in the rear for anyone who wants to book a private session. -Hannah Gray

J. SHERMAN SALON Poncey-Highland 1057 Blue Ridge Ave. NE jshermansalon.com

Douglas J. Sherman and April Staska: two young, exceedingly hip professional stylists from the Southeast, close friends and proud co-owners of J. Sherman Salon. After each traveling and honing their skills for several years, the pair eventually found a home in Atlanta and set up shop. Once colleagues together at a salon in Cumming, Georgia, they eventually realized their styles and work ethic were compatible and left, to the benefit of us all, to join forces. Some things were just meant to be. After finding their Poncey-Highland location within a day, they signed a lease on the spot and officially opened their doors in February of this year. Since then, they’ve steadily carved out a niche for themselves in the Atlanta beauty scene with their immense skill, cool and relaxing atmosphere (think exposed brick and brass-framed mirrors), and tireless dedication to their craft. The biggest factor that sets J. Sherman apart from the competition is their uncanny abilities with color. Sherman’s personal pursuit of excellence and fascination with ever-changing trends and techniques have given him a masterful eye for color and placement. Whether it’s a lively pastel, a captivating metallic shade or any natural hue, they have established their salon as a place where expectations of what can be done with hair are regularly met and exceeded, and they’re investing every ounce of creativity into it. Sherman and Staska are in the business of giving clients hair that’s perfect for their personality and lifestyle, and that means seeing each customer as a person, and not just a hairy head. If you’re not sure what you want, come in for a free consultation. Sherman and Staska will be there, armed with a smile and their considerable creative powers. -Alex Dollard

THE VINOY RENAISSANCE

People tend to go to the Vinoy Renaissance St. Petersburg Resort & Golf Club in Florida (now in its 90th year) to get away from it all. Things are done differently there: unrushed, carefree, calm. In the morning, you can enjoy an elaborate breakfast (read: red velvet pancakes) prepared by head chef Mark Heimann at Marchand’s

501 5th Ave. NE St. Petersburg, Florida vinoyrenaissanceresort.com

Bar & Grille, the hotel’s staple restaurant. You’ll want to resist the urge to take a mid-morning nap with all the things there are to do. Then again if catching some z’s is on your to-do list, you won’t find a better spot. After breakfast, saunter down to the Salvador Dali Museum only steps away or lounge by the pool to get your daily dose of vitamin D. Maybe indulge your inner playboy on a 50-plus-foot sailboat, then come back for drinks at Fred’s Cellar, an inconspicuous 1920s speakeasy. And when the sun goes down, the Veranda Patio bar is perfect for evening drinks; then people shuffle off to their rooms, tired but happy, and ready to repeat it all the next day.

MAHEKAL

lays claim to pristine, turquoise waters and the second longest barrier reef system in the world, making it ideal for offshore, underwater excursions. But back on land, if you’re looking for an authentic Caribbean experience, no place compares to Mahekal Beach Resort in Mexico.

Playa del Carmen, Mexico mahekalbeachresort.com

The resort — the first to open in the city over 30 years ago — is rooted in the ideals of tradition instilled by the original owners, a local Mexican family that built six thatched-roof palapas on the beach for backpackers to rent. And today, after a multi-million dollar re-imagination, Mahekal is home to over 100 bungalows with private hammocks and outdoor terraces just meters from the beach. But weaving through the lush vegetation and tropical gardens dotting the resort, you can feel the same bohemian vibe of its origins. Details like artisanal embroidered pillows, complemented with native tropical hardwood furniture and ceramic turquoise sinks enhance the authenticity of the ambiance. It all makes for a lavish vacation, a quick plane ride from home. -Jaime Lin Weinstein
