iscount Tire first opened its doors in 1960, when Bruce T. Halle rented an old plumbing supply building on Stadium Boulevard in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Bruce cleaned out the building, built countertops, repainted the sign outside, and displayed his initial six-tire inventory. As the store’s only employee upon its opening, Bruce served as the tire technician, cleaning crew, salesman, and accountant. Because he didn’t have an air compressor, Bruce would even haul a portable air tank to and from a nearby gas station so that he could inflate the tires he sold. Over time, Bruce nurtured that first Discount Tire store through hard work and a governing philosophy that now serves as Discount Tire’s founding principles: treat people with respect and fairness, care for those in need, always do what is right, work hard, be responsible, and have fun. he roots of V’s Italiano Ristorante date back to 1963 when “V” (Vita) and Jay Totta decided to open the first “V’s Café”, consisting of a seven stool counter, three tables, and four booths, for a total seating capacity of 35 people. Utilizing family recipes rich in tradition, high quality standards, and the personal touch of “V” herself greeting customers, an ever expanding business was created. In 1966, the Totta’s acquired and remodeled a building that seemed massive at the time. It could accommodate 85 guests; nearly two and one-half times the original seating. However, that building was soon outgrown. “V” and her husband Jay, an architect, dreamed of someday being able to design and build their own building that would create an atmosphere of elegant, old world charm.

n 1986, Jim Stamberger approached Pam Buck of the Blue Springs Parks and Recreation Department with the idea of beginning a theatre company for the community of Blue Springs. From those meetings came “Blue Springs Community Theater,” as it was known for the first three years. The first

production was the musical “Scrooge”. More than 100 persons auditioned on October 1st and 2nd, 1986 and a cast of approximately 40 persons performed the show. The first show was performed with recorded music. In the summer of 1987, Jim Stamberger directed “The King and I” and the music was provided by a live

orchestra. Since that time, the name of the theater has changed to “Blue Springs City Theatre”. The number of yearly productions has varied from 2 to 4, but the quality of the shows and the caliber of talent involved has only gotten better. In the years since the first scrooge, over 40 productions have been presented to the community ranging from children’s’ theater – “Tom Sawyer”, “Winnie the Pooh”, “Peter Pan”, small shows like “Curious Savage”, “Miracle Worker”, “Barefoot in the Park”, to the large summer musicals such as – “Oklahoma”, “South Pacific” and “The Wizard of Oz”. &B Theatres stands for Bills and Bagby, two families that both launched movie theatres and joined forces-for business and love-in 1980. The history of B&B stretches back to 1924 when Elmer Bills, Sr., bought the Lyric Theatre in Salisbury, MO, and founded Bills Theatres. It was there that he met his future wife, Johnnie, while she played the piano along with the silent movies. Years later, their son Elmer Bills, Jr., was born into the business. In 1936, the elder Elmer hired 10-year-old Sterling Bagby as a concession clerk. Sterling grew up, fought in World War II and came home to marry his Higbee, MO ticket seller, Pauline. Together, they started the Bagby Traveling Picture Show and roamed rural Missouri with their films, projection equipment, seats and snack bar. The Bagby Traveling Picture Show screened movies in barns, schools and parks. Eventually, Sterling and Pauline’s company evolved into a Kansas circuit of drive-in theatres and “hardtops” (their nickname for indoor theatres).

he Harry S. Truman Library, the first Presidential Library to be created under the provisions of the 1955 Presidential Libraries Act, was established to preserve the papers, books, and other historical materials relating to former President Harry S. Truman and to make them available to the people in a place suitable for exhibit and research. The Library building, which cost $1,750,000, was built by the Harry S. Truman Library Inc., a private corporation, with funds donated by more than 17,000 individuals and organizations from all parts of the country. The building and Mr. Truman’s Presidential papers were transferred to the Government at a dedication ceremony held on July 6, 1957, and attended by Government officials of both parties. Chief Justice Earl Warren delivered the principal address.

anessa Starke grew up in Blue Springs, MO and attended the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, CA for her undergraduate education. She majored in Social Sciences with emphasis in Psychology and minored in Psychology and the Law. While at the USC, Ms. Starke became a member of the Delta Gamma Fraternity and served at the Undergraduate Student Government as a Greek Senator.
