IMPROVE YOUR MENTAL HEALTH with Better Sleep Family Features
F
or some, the holidays may be the happiest season of all, but for others the hectic pace and endless to-do lists can take a real toll on their mental health. This year, the impact is heightened by a global health pandemic. According to a survey from Mattress Firm, more than 60 million Americans say COVID-19 has worsened their quality of their sleep, and those losing sleep are often seeing their mental well-being and healthy habits worsen. Nearly half of respondents said COVID-19 has increased their worries and prevented them from falling or staying asleep
at night, with 41% reported their poor sleep has a negative impact on their daily lives. “It’s no surprise that when our minds are full or our hearts are heavy, our mental health tends to suffer,” said Dr. Sujay Kansagra, a sleep health expert for Mattress Firm. “What many people don’t realize is that mental health struggles also affect sleep, and adequate rest is a key component of maintaining and improving your mental health.” If stress and worry are preventing you from getting a good night of sleep, try these ideas from Kansagra to help improve your mental state and ease your body into rest.

Page 25
Think positively Every night before going to bed, list three good things from your day. They don’t have to be amazing things, just three positive aspects of your day. For example, acknowledge you had a good virtual catch-up with a colleague or enjoyed a new recipe or workout class. Listing your positive experiences at night can help you maintain a positive frame of mind as you unwind for the day.
Give yourself a break Especially if you’re working from home or tackling a lot of seasonal tasks, it’s easy to keep yourself busy up until the minute you fall into bed. However, your mind may still be whirling from all that activity. Build in a few minutes before bed each night to let your mind rest, whether it’s spending a few minutes with a good book, practicing meditation or sipping on a cup of sleepy-time tea.
Create a to-do list This technique is for those who mentally work through their list of pending responsibilities before bed. In a fast-paced world, sometimes lying in bed is the first time you have to actually think about what’s on your list. By creating a list of tasks (or even writing down your worries), you can prevent yourself from thinking about them excessively before bed and throughout the night.
Appeal to your senses Being mindful of how your senses react to various stimuli can play a role in your ability to drift off to sleep. Some people need silence; others benefit from ambient sound. Certain scents can be soothing and make good choices for essential oil diffusers, such as lavender oil. Also be conscious of the touches that affect your sleep, like the support from your mattress, the softness of your sheets or the temperature of the room. Whether it’s your family, your health or general stress that’s keeping you up, find time in your day to give yourself some grace. Your mental health is extremely important and should not be overlooked, so if you’re feeling a little worn down, ensure you’re getting the quality sleep you need to tackle the day and week ahead.
Try progressive relaxation This involves taking slow, deep breaths and slowly tensing the muscles in your body for a few seconds then relaxing them. Start at your feet and work your way up the body. This technique can help you relax and decompress after a long day.
Find more tips for better sleep at MattressFirm.com.
What’s Keeping You Awake? If you’re like many Americans, outside influences and worries may affect your sleep. Pinpointing what’s keeping you awake, such as these common sleep disruptors reported in a Mattress Firm survey, can help you address your concerns so you can rest more easily. • • • • •

BOREDOM FOR A healthy brain Melissa Erickson More Content Now

oredom is common, unavoidable and at times unpleasant, but it can also be positive, sparking creativity and productivity, improving social connections and boosting overall brain health. “The science of how boredom can improve brain health is in its infancy, but we know that the brain is a powerful tool,” said Alicia Walf, a neuroscientist and senior lecturer at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. The capacity of the human brain is mindbogglingly huge, with researchers at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies estimating that its memory capacity may be around a quadrillion bytes. The brain is always “on,” thinking and making decisions, dealing with stressors and unconscious activities — but the brain also has its limits. Being bored can give your brain a much needed rest and in a way recharge it, said Walf, who studies stress and how it influences emotion, behavior and cognition. Being bored doesn’t need to be negative or lead to bad or risky behaviors. Because it’s unavoidable, why not embrace boredom, Walf asks. “Think of it as a signal that your brain is giving you. Maybe you should be doing something else. Maybe you should get engaged. Be awake to boredom and what it’s telling you,” she said. For example, if you are bored at work or in a college class, think about why. Is it that your job or college major possibly isn’t a good match for you? Is it too easy or too hard? “It can be big-deal stuff like your career or small stuff like what TV show or movie you’re watching. If you’re not engaged, maybe just change the channel,” she said.
How boredom works When boredom happens it’s an internal mental state. “So it’s all in your mind. It can push you to think outside of yourself and help with social connections,” Walf said. When we are not busy with other thoughts and activities, we focus inward, as well as look to reconnect with friends and family. Boredom can be used to your advantage to jumpstart innovative thinking. “As long as you don’t get overwhelmed by it, let your mind wander. It opens you up creatively to having an ‘Aha!’ moment,” Walf said. Boredom is also good for overall brain health. During exciting times when your brain is working it releases the chemical dopamine, which is associated with feeling good. When the brain has fallen into a predictable, monotonous pattern, many people feel bored or depressed. This might be because of lower levels of dopamine. It’s possible to retrain the brain to enjoy these boring times, Walf said. Prioritize boredom To take advantage of boredom, let your mind wander when doing repetitive activities like washing the dishes or taking a familiar walk, Walf said. Look for a pattern in what makes you bored, and think about how you feel in that moment. “Accept it if you have to — for example, if you’re at work or in school — or do something else,” Walf said. Find what engages you. Be open to trying new things, she said. “Sit with your boredom and think about what you can gain from it,” Walf said.

omen diagnosed with breast cancer who want to speak with someone who has survived the disease can do so thanks to a unique program
sponsored by the American Cancer Society. The Reach to Recovery program from the ACS connects current cancer patients with breast cancer survivors via an online chat. Patients, regardless of where they are in their cancer journeys, can connect with volunteers for oneon-one support. Volunteers can help patients cope with treatment and side effects while also offering advice on speaking with friends and family, working while receiving treatment and more. Even people facing a possible breast cancer diagnosis can sign up. The program works by asking patients and volunteers to join the program and create profiles on the Reach to Recovery website (www.reach.cancer.org).
Patients then look for a match by searching volunteer profiles, filtering through suggested matches and sending an online chat request to volunteers. Patients and volunteers can then schedule a chat and discuss any concerns patients may have. Volunteers with the Reach to Recovery program are breast cancer survivors who have been trained by the ACS to provide peer-to-peer support to people facing a breast cancer diagnosis. Volunteers can provide support to patients, but are prohibited from offering medical advice. More information about the Reach to Recovery program, including how to join as a patient or volunteer, is available at www.reach. cancer.org. TF20A357

Social distancing guidelines encouraging people to stay in their homes as much as possible led many to wonder what to do in regard to visiting their physicians. Telehealth is one option people may want to explore. Sometimes referred to as “telemedicine,” telehealth enables patients to speak with their physicians via phone, tablet or conferencing apps such as Zoom. This can
help patients and their physicians reduce their risk for exposure to viruses such as COVID-19, but also other conditions that can weaken their immune systems and, as a result, make them more vulnerable to illness. But as helpful as telehealth can be while social distancing restrictions remain in place, it’s important that patients continue to seek the advice of their own physicians. One of the concerns about telehealth noted by representatives for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is the difficulty of monitoring health care providers who may not have patients’ best interests in mind. This can lead to certain problems, including overprescribing medications and doctors
offering medical advice to patients in states where the physicians are not licensed to practice. Speaking only with physicians who have already treated you is one way to avoid this potential pitfall associated with telehealth services.

ew habits are as harmful to the human body as smoking tobacco products, especially cigarettes. The American Heart Association says smoking is the most preventable cause of death in the United States. Smoking is linked to heart disease and stroke and can increase the risk for cancers of the bladder, throat, cervix, pancreas, and mouth. Smoking is linked to roughly 90 percent of lung cancer cases in the United States as well. Lung Cancer Canada indicates the majority of lung cancer cases in Canada — about 85 percent — are directly related to smoking tobacco. Even though smoking can ravage the body and cause significant damage to the lungs, which worsens the longer one smokes, people who quit may be able to restore a good portion of their lung health. The Lung Health Institute says there are a number of ways the lungs can heal once a person stops smoking. While it may not be possible to undo the structural damage to the lungs, lung function can be
significantly restored when people quit smoking. Here’s a look at some ways the lungs and other parts of the body may recover. • Risk of heart attack decreases: The wellness resource Verywell says that after day one of quitting smokers’ risk of heart attack begins to decrease. • Rate of COPD decline improves: Research published in the journal Respiratory Medicine found that people with mild to moderate COPD can expect to experience normalization of lung function decline within a year of quitting. This means that the rate of decline considered normal with age is the same as someone who had never smoked before. • Reduced lung cancer risk: The risk of getting lung cancer reduces by 50 percent after 10 years of being smokefree, according to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention. • Carbon monoxide levels go down: Orlando Health says carbon monoxide gradually leaves the bloodstream after people quit smoking, which helps reduce the severity of symptoms like shortness of
breath. Similarly, chemicals in cigarette smoke can inflame the lining of the airways. • Reactivation of cilia: Cilia are the small hair-like structures that move mucus and bacteria to the back of the throat. They fail to work properly when a person smokes, but can resume function after quitting. • Improved circulation: When lung function improves, oxygen can more effectively reach cells through the body and circulation improves. Within 24 hours of quitting, constriction of blood vessels also will occur, resulting in lower blood pressure and improved pulse rate. Body temperature will start to normalize within 24 hours as well. • Improved taste and smell: Within 48 hours of quitting, taste and smell receptors start to heal, and damaged nerve cells also will begin to self-repair. Quitting smoking is the best thing smokers can do for their bodies. Once a person quits smoking, his or her body begins healing in myriad ways.
