Stuller: ‘A throwback to the old days’
Blue Springs’ all-state ‘mauler’ linebacker eager to return to field to face rival Jaguars By Bill Althaus
Senior all-state linebacker Austin Stuller, off to a slow start this season because of a concussion, is expected to be back on the field when the Wildcats play host to the Jaguars Friday. Special to The Examiner/DAVID M. RAINEY
bill.althaus@examiner.net
When Austin Stuller was a youngster, his family would circle the date of the annual Blue Springs-Blue Springs South football clash. “It was the biggest day of the year for me,” said Stuller, an all-state linebacker who has spent much of his time on the sidelines after suffering a concussion early in the season. “When I was watching from the stands I dreamed about playing in the game. “I knew I was going to go to Blue Springs and I dreamed about wearing the Wildcats uniform and making a big play in the game. “Now, I’m playing in my last one and I can’t wait for next Friday. We’re here at home, it will be my first game back since my concussion and I’m ready to go. When you play at Blue Springs, every game is a big game, but all of us, the one game we look for on the schedule is Blue Springs South because we know all those guys. “I went to Delta Woods, so I went to school with a lot of them. Then we were at the Freshman Center together. I knew it was a big game when I was a little kid, but now that I’m playing, it’s even bigger than I ever thought about. “Our class has never lost to South and we’re going to do everything we can Friday to keep that streak going.” While he has been out with the concussion, Stuller has prowled the sidelines like a caged animal. At practice sessions, minus a helmet and shoulder pads, he is in the middle of everything the defense does so he will primed and ready for Friday’s
return to action. “Players like Austin, who is such a great kid, well, that’s the reason you get into this profession,” Wildcats coach Kelly Donohoe said. “He’s a throwback to the old days – a 6-foot-1, 240-pound linebacker who is just a mauler. “And he can run for a big guy. We might go through an entire season and he doesn’t say two or three words, but all you have to do is see his motor running, watch him at practice and on Friday nights, and you know what this team means to him.” “And we all know what this game, and his return to action, means to all of us. I’ll admit it, that our defense is different without him. He has a presence out on the field and we’re going to be a better football team with Austin Stuller back at linebacker.” Stuller broke through last season, leading the Wildcats to a second straight appearance in the Class 6 Show-Me Bowl state championship. He tallied 82 tackles, nine tackles for loss, four sacks to earn first-team Class 6 all-state honors. Defensive coordinator Derek Wilson, who is quickly gaining a reputation as one of the premier defensive minds in the metro area, just grins when asked about Stuller’s return. “We love Stuller,” Wilson said. “He’s a special young man. He has so much passion for the game, his teammates and this school. He hasn’t missed a practice since the concussion. We’re all excited to see him get back on the field, but I know no one is going to be as excited as Austin when he gets back out there against South.”

ROPER From Page 3 “I was just so-so. I didn’t like it back then,” Roper said. “I wasn’t very physical back in the day. My mom really took care of me a lot when I was a kid. I was kind of soft.” That’s no longer the case for the Blue Springs South 6-foot-5, 280-pound offensive tackle. He’s made a name for himself as one of the best offensive lineman in the state and he’s being recruited or has received offers from multiple FCS programs. According to 247sports.com, Roper is ranked as the 177th best offensive tackle in the nation, No. 40 in Missouri and is rated as a two-star recruit. So far, the senior has received offers from Southeast Missouri State, Lindenwood, Minnesota State, Kent State, Southern Illinois, Eastern Illinois Northern Iowa, Illinois State, Missouri State, North Dakota State and South Dakota. All the offers started flooding in for the senior when he had a strong showing at a
football camp at Lindenwood University earlier this year. “I went to both days and that’s when I started popping up on the map,” Roper said. “That’s when I got my third big offer from SEMO. I started doing really good and coaches started hitting me up. “My physicality and my run blocking has improved a lot. I always have been good with my pass blocking because I am good with my footwork.” A once “soft” football player has become a staple of the Jaguars football program. Last season, Roper helped the Jaguars accumulate 1,923 yards in 12 games (160.3 rushing yards per game), including 1,230 yards from star running back Austin Terry. Over the years, Roper has become more and more physical. When he started in the fourth grade, there were many other players that were larger than him. Today, there are not many players that can claim to be bigger than the senior tackle. “My freshman year is when I started growing a lot and getting bigger,” Roper said. “You would pick me out of all of the offensive lineman because I am big now.” And he has the confidence to go with the size. South head coach Jon Oyler said

Roper is considerably more confident than last season. “He’s worked really hard to make himself a really good player,” Oyler said. “For his size, it’s really impressive how athletic he is. “His confidence is way up. He’s much more sure of himself this year taking care of his responsibilities.” Added Roper: “I’ve been working on not letting everything getting to my head and being more confident in my abilities. “When those (colleges) started looking
at me, that’s when I started getting a lot of confidence. The coaches told me how good I can be and where I can be. They told me I can be as good as I want to be.” Before the end of the season, Roper said he hopes to get a few more offers, maybe even some from FBS schools. But for right now, he’s pretty happy with where he’s at. “I just want to be the best I can be for my team,” Roper said. “I wouldn’t be mad or anything if I didn’t get any (FBS offers). I am ready to show out.”

With the Cat Clash game taking place at Peve Stadium this year, Blue Springs High School’s Golden Regiment will be performing for the halftime show. The mostly original show, called “From a Different Angle,” is arranged in part from a symphonic band song called “Asphalt Cocktail,” and also includes the familiar Louis Armstrong tune “What a Wonderful World,” though the latter will sound different because it’s played in a minor key instead of a major key. “Everything in the show has been arranged for us, though there is a familiar piece of music,” said Tim Allshouse, Blue Springs High School director of bands. “When you see the show, everything is on an angle. The tarps on the field are at an angle. The whole prem-

KCWJ in its 22nd year of broadcasting Cat Clash By Bill Althaus bill.althaus@examiner.net
It doesn’t get much bigger for two area high schools, or Independence radio station Real Country 1030 AM, than Friday’s annual Cat Clash, between crosstown rivals Blue Springs and Blue Springs South high schools. This will be the 22nd year KCWJ will broadcast the game that features two of the most historic and successful programs in the state. “We’ve never missed a broadcast,” said KCWJ spokesman Tony Wrisinger, who has brought Northwest Missouri State University football and mens and womens basketball, Omaha Storm Chasers baseball and area football, basketball, baseball and softball to Real Country 1030 AM. “When the schedule is announced, the first game you look to see is the Blue Springs-Blue Springs South game. It just doesn’t get any bigger in Eastern Jackson County and we are so proud to bring fans our broadcast.” This will be the fourth year Rob Evans will be behind the microphone. Evans has won the past three Missouri Broadcasters Association Play by Play Award. “It’s one of the big games in the area and one of the biggest – if not the biggest
– games for each of these teams,” Evans said. “And what I like about it is that it is a great rivalry, but when a player knocks an opponent down, he can reach down and help him back up. These two teams have a lot of respect for each other – and that’s how it should be between two great programs.” Wrisinger, who created Vision Sports along with Brian Johnston, said the memories of the annual Cat Clash are too many to mention. “Every game has those special moments,” Wrisinger said, “but what I do remember are the players. And there have been so many great players over the years. Players like Blue Springs South’s Connor Harris – who did it all in their state championship win a few years back – and Noah Nigro and Adam Cofield. “For Blue Springs, players like Andrew Tuggle and Elijah Lee, who will play at Arrowhead Stadium Sunday with the San Francisco 49ers, and the Davis twins (Carlos and Khalil). There are so many, you hate to leave them out. And there are great coaches like (former South head coach) Greg Oder and (Blue Springs coach) Kelly Donohoe and the school ADs and district AD Mark Bubalo. “They make our job easy, and fun. We’re counting the days, the hours and the minutes until Friday night.”

Cat Clash: Blue Springs/Blue Springs South Showdown 2018 BLUE SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL
Friendly competition means many benefits for the community By Sophie Mermelstein Blue Springs High School Student Senate president
Beyond the highly anticipated football game and friendly can food drive competition, Community Unity Week serves to unite our town on the very trait that represent us best: service. For more than a decade, our city has come together to raise money and non-perishable food items for our local Community Services League in a weeklong endeavor. CSL provides immediate services to people in need, which is so essential. The CSL covers needs from food and clothing to transportation and utility assistances, which is exactly why crosstown rivals like Blue Springs and Blue Springs South see no better way to come together and help our beloved community. Organizing an event such as this is no easy task, and requires the work of the entire Student Senate to pull off. To raise funds while giving back to our city, each senator goes into the community and gets a donation from a local business. In return, these businesses are widely recognized across the district and city as Community Unity Week Sponsors in hopes to promote and reward their generosity (see page 8 for a full list of local businesses who have been able to help out). While challenging to coordinate,
it is very exciting to see businesses in Blue Springs so eager and willing to give back to the CSL for the betterment of our town. The weeklong can food drive gives our student body a chance to not only help donate, but engage in a friendly competition between our high school and Blue Springs South High School. In addition to bragging rights, Student Senate encourages our classmates to participate through a bingo sheet and by giving a food party to the No. 1 donating class room. These incentives combined, result in a large donation to CSL that the Senate delivers personally. To wrap up the week, a classic rivalry football game will be held at Blue Springs High School’s Peve Stadium. Beyond seeing who has the better football team, our students also see this game as a competition of which team has the best school spirit and student section. In the spirt of competition and community service both high schools raise money during halftime during a Miracle Minute fundraiser. Senators collect spare change from the crowd for 60 seconds to give additional funds to CSL. This amazing tradition will always be a highlight of Student Senate for me because it allows my competitive side to come out while I lead my school as we all race to donate as much as we can to an organization who needs it the most.
BLUE SPRINGS SOUTH HIGH SCHOOL
Two schools come together to help those less fortunate By Courtney Cook Blue Springs South High School Student Senate president
Every year, the Blue Springs School District excitedly participates in Community Unity Week. This is the week we put aside our rivalry and come together to focus on giving back to our community. Our generous students and staff members are encouraged to donate canned goods and nonperishable items. And we all accept this challenge willingly. These donations benefit many local families through the Community Services League. During Community Unity Week, the competition definitely heats up – in a friendly way, of course. Classrooms are more than determined to have the highest number of items brought in. Last year we exceeded our goal, and this year we are ready to do it again! The whole Blue Springs School District is ready to work together to help provide relief to anyone who needs it.
The Community Services League is all about providing for our community, and the Blue Springs School District shares that purpose. Our stakeholders are more than ready to serve others. On Sept. 21, the bleachers will be shaking. Both Blue Springs High School and Blue Springs South will unite in one stadium. The whole city will have arrived. Everyone will be pumped to celebrate the big finale to Community Unity Week (Go JAGS!). A huge THANK YOU to the numerous local businesses that have already donated and will continue to give generously. Your kindness and generosity are second to none. Though we are passionate about the rivalry between our schools, our schools will always remain united and undivided when it comes to being a part of something bigger than ourselves. We are so honored to take part in such a worthwhile service project. When it comes to helping others, we will always root for each other. Go Wildcats AND Jags!

Cat Clash: Blue Springs/Blue Springs South Showdown 2018 COMMUNITY UNITY WEEK
Community Unity is more than a football rivalry Fall is often associated with football. In 1996, when BSHS and BSSHS joined the same conference, the schools and community joined together to make the event more meaningful than a crosstown rivalry on the field. Instead, the game became a weeklong opportunity for students, parents and community members to join together to show good sportsmanship and demonstrate outstanding community support through giving. Since then, Community Unity Week has been an annual event that challenges our students, staff, parents and community to raise funds and food items for those in need. The communities served by our district remain steadfast and united in their commitment to providing all students a quality educational experience and a healthy and supportive environment. Out of this desire came the creation of Community Unity Week. The week of Sept. 17-21 will include events that transcend a football game between our two high schools – opportunities to demonstrate to our youth the importance of giving. Community Unity Week is a way for the entire community to work together in providing items and donations for those in need. During the week, our 22 schools will be encouraging students, staff and parents to bring in items and monetary donations will also be collected. Our district and community have strong traditions of generosity that I am sure will continue. We are asking for help from our entire community to make this year even more successful than in the past. Community members may bring in items or monetary donations to any of our schools or directly to the Community Services League at 200 S.W. 10th Street in Blue Springs. Donations will help those families who would otherwise suffer hardships paying bills and providing basic necessities. Our high school football teams will meet on the field
