Dom Harkness remembers sitting in the stands at Peve Stadium as a youngster, watching quarterbacks Ian Brown and Wylson Lamb lead the Blue Springs High School football team to state championships. “I’d talk to my dad about playing for Blue Springs – being a quarterback and leading the team to a state championship – and now I’m a senior and I’m hoping those little kid dreams become a reality,” Harkness said. “I still can’t believe I’m a senior and I’m the starting quarterback for Coach (Kelly) Donohoe at Blue Springs. This is all such a dream come true, such an honor. I’m enjoying every minute of it and I’m really going to savor every minute of this week.” That’s because Harkness and his Wildcat teammates are traveling to Blue Springs South’s Larry Stewart Memorial Stadium Friday night for the annual Cat Clash, one of the most highly anticipated games of the season. “I’ve had so many firsts this season – my first varsity start, my first home start, against Rockhurst, which made it even more special – and now, my first start against South,” said Harkness, who has completed 37 of 68 passes for 457 yards, seven touchdowns and just two interceptions in his first four games this season. “We have so much respect for those guys, and some of them are my good friends.” As if to emphasize that comment, a car load of South football players drive by Harkness – who is on the South campus in his football gear for the cover shoot of the Cat Clash publication – and call out and wave. “See what I mean?” he said, chuckling. “I think all our friendships go back to the
days when we played with – and against – each other in little league games in Blue Springs. “Then we all go to Jamaica on the charity trip, and we really get closer as high school students and friends. No one wants to win that game Friday as much as they want to beat us, and we want to beat them, but the minute the game is over we’re going to shake hands and be friends again. It’s just a great rivalry.” Harkness was not part of the Cat Clash last year as he suffered a knee injury in a junior varsity game against Rockhurst early in the season. “I wish we could have had Dom last year, because he could have been a big part of our offense at the varsity level,” longtime Wildcats coach Kelly Donohoe said. “He’s been such an important part of this year’s team. “We really like Dom. He has a little bit of that swagger we’ve seen from some pretty good quarterbacks at South. And there is a fine line between cockiness and confidence and Dom is so confident – but never cocky. He has the ultimate respect for all our opponents. “He’s a senior, and this is his only year to be a starter, and we’ve had some great senior quarterbacks who have had a lot of success the one year they were able to start for us. And we think that Dom is just going to get better as the season goes on. He can run, he has a great arm and he’s savvy.” And he’s sharing the cover of the Cat Clash publication with South quarterback Max Conard. “Being on the cover with Max is so cool,” Harkness said. “Like I told you, when I was a little kid I went to all the Blue Springs-Blue Springs South games and I remember seeing the Cat Clash and wondering what it would be like to be on the cover. “And now I know – it’s awesome.”

CONARD From Page 3 St. Joseph Central, I had Coach (Jon) Oyler last year and have Coach Klein this year. “I wish I had another year with Coach Klein, because he is a special coach. He is going to do great things at Blue Springs South High School. And I want so much to help him and our entire team have success this season.” Conard lived in St. Joseph and remembers when Elijah Lee was a football player at Central. “Elijah played at Central, but became a star at Blue Springs High School,” Conard said of the former Blue Springs and Kansas State standout who now plays linebacker for the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers. “And Cade Musser played at Central before he came down to Blue Springs. When my family moved, I wanted to play at South, and even though we haven’t had the success Blue Springs has had, I’m happy with my decision and so proud to be a part of the South football team.”
Klein has been happy with his starting quarterback so far in his first season at Blue Springs South. “Max provides leadership through his actions,” Klein said. “He is selfless, and his willingness to help his teammates is a great character attribute that he possesses.” Although he has been a Jaguar just two years, he knows a thing or two about prep traditions. “My dad Matt played football at Kansas State, so we have a lot of purple at our house, a lot of purple clothing, and the first thing I did when I got to Blue Springs was get rid of the purple,” Conard said, chuckling. “I put it all in a box because I might wear it again someday – but not while I’m here at South.” While the 0-4 Jaguars are still seeking their first win, Conard said he is honored to be a part of one of the most storied programs in the state. “I take so much pride in being a part of this program,” the senior captain said. “It’s special to be on this team and we’re all working hard to get that first win. That’s all we’re thinking about right now is getting one win. And when that happens, we’ll start thinking about win No.
2.” That approach appeals to his coach. “Max has had continual growth throughout the summer and has the ability to handle the demands of the job, not only on the field but his role within the academic setting,” Klein said. “He has outstanding academic qualities while maintaining the role of quarterback and being a captain.” And Conard knows this week’s intensity will be off the charts as the Jaguars
hope to avenge a pair of losses to the Wildcats last season, including a 31-21 battle in last year’s district semifinal playoff. “We work hard every week at practice – it doesn’t matter what team we are playing,” Conard said. “But the intensity level always goes up when we play Blue Springs. We respect them, and know they have a great program and we’re going to do everything we can to prepare for them and get that first win next Friday.”

Keeping busy
Blue Springs South’s Jaguar Pride band fits in ‘Graffiti’ show between big competitions By Mike Genet mike.genet@examiner.net
The host marching band for this year’s Cat Clash game, the Blue Springs South Jaguar Pride, is in between a pair of busy weekends. The Jaguar Pride hosted 15 other schools Saturday in its annual KC Championships, and the event had a rain delay, so the band didn’t take the field to close the show until nearly 9 p.m. After Friday’s game, band members will (maybe) grab a couple hours of sleep and then head to Cedar Falls, Iowa, for the Bands of America Regional. Blue Springs High School’s Golden Regiment also will be playing in the regional in the late morning, while the Jaguar Pride is in the early afternoon. “We both go to Iowa; they leave late Friday, and we leave Saturday morning at about 3 a.m.,” said Ken Hansen,

BANDS From Page 6 South’s director of bands. So, no rest for the weary. “Exactly,” he said. “We just keep grinding.” The Jaguar Pride’s competition show this year is called “Graffiti,” which is based on the English Dances by 20th century British composer Malcolm Arnold, as well as the anonymous English graffiti artist Bansky and includes part of the Beatles song “Hey Jude.” The band’s season concludes with the BOA Super Regionals the last weekend of October in Indianapolis. The Golden Regiment hosts its annual invitational Oct. 5. In November the band will travel to New York City in November for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

BLUE SPRINGS SOUTH HIGH SCHOOL
Community Unity means a common goal for all By Lauren Low Blue Springs South High School Student Senate president
As autumn rolls around, the Blue Springs School District looks forward to another Community Unity week. This is a week filled with competition and a rivalry between the two high schools that ends with the common goal of helping the community! Both schools work to collect the most canned goods and nonperishable items to help stock the shelves at the Blue Springs Community Services League. Our student body sets aside the commitments in their own lives in order to go out, purchase and donate items for those who need them. I believe that out of all of the service projects in which our district participates, Community Unity Week truly
showcases the breadth of our collective impact. The collection goals set each year are annually met and surpassed. While the number of items collected each year is astounding, we could not do it without the support of local businesses. The donations that they provide help us provide six months worth of services at CSL. Yet this isn’t just an opportunity to donate; Jaguars and Wildcats add their own exciting twist. Both schools work hard to outdo each other in a friendly competition that culminates at the Blue Springs vs. Blue Springs South football game on Sept. 27. As Community Unity Week comes to an end, we are proud of how we, as a community, have given back to our city. Both high schools relish the chance to unite beyond the rivalry looming and show our community how much we care! Go Jags!
BLUE SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL
Competition between schools brings community energy By Abby Thomson Blue Springs High School Student Senate president
Apart from the city-wide anticipated rivalry football game between Blue Springs South and Blue Springs High School is a week dedicated to raising funds and non-perishable canned goods for those in need. The whole student body works together to raise goods for the betterment of lives that need extra help with food and some financial needs. Beyond the student body, student senate works particularly hard to organize and raise funds for the week. Each senator goes out into the community and asks local business for donations to the cause. The businesses who donate are esteemed for their donations and are widely recognized around the community and district for their generosity and as Community Unity Week sponsors. Although challenging to organize, it is highly exciting to see business-
es around the community getting involved in the cause and eager to give back to CSL for the betterment of our town. The weeklong food drive is awesome for our students because it not only encourages them to donate, but it also causes healthy competition between Blue Springs High School and Blue Springs South. Each school is encouraged by its student senators to get involved and donate for the cause of CSL. The senators in turn gather all the goods and personally deliver them to CSL. The week is topped off by the annual crosstown rivalry game between the Wildcats and Jaguars. The students come together to celebrate the donations made and the game between to the two schools. The energy after a week such as Community Unity is unmatched and a cause as great is it is something both the student body and senate look forward to participating in every year.
