he roots of LaMar’s Donuts date back to 1933 when Ray Lamar, 17, began making donuts at the Jack Frost Donuts Company. During those days, wholesale donuts were made in the morning and the store opened for retail business at 11am and stayed open until midnight. Back then, a dozen donuts cost 18 cents. Cake donuts were either plain or dusted with powdered sugar or granulated sugar. Yeast donuts were also available. By the early 1940s, Ray Lamar introduced new flavors, devil’s food donuts, chocolate iced donuts and an apple spice donut to the menu.

Ray Lamar opened the first LaMar’s Donuts in a converted gas station on Linwood Blvd. in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1960. Locals immediately flocked to the homemade donuts and LaMar’s Donuts became a Kansas City institution. Lines started forming before 6 a.m., and by closing time more than 11,000 donuts are sold at this single location. he Washington Post has listed Grain Valley High School as one of “America’s Most Challenging High Schools” three years in a row. U.S. News & World Report and Newsweek have also recognized Grain Valley High School in recent years as ranking among America’s best high schools. Grain Valley High School has 1230 students in grades 9-12, up from 950 students four years ago. The academic program of the high school is organized on a rotating block schedule. Classes are 90 minutes each and students have four class periods per day on an alternating two-day rotation. Students have a community service requirement for graduation. All high school students were issued Chromebooks this fall. This was the culmination of a multi-year phasein of one-to-one devices for all high school students. Grain Valley is a member of the Missouri River Valley Conference (MRVC). Grain Valley has been the recipient of the MRVC All-Sports Award

for the past eight years. Extra-curricular activities have been expanded in recent years with the most recent additions of girls golf, dance team, FBLA, and FCCLA. The district is one-third of the way through a long-range facilities plan to double the size of the high school building and update the current facility to accommodate the growing student population. Significant upgrades to student activity spaces on the high school campus are also underway. The Grain Valley School District covers 40 square miles and has 4200 students. hen you walk through the door at Lunar Bowl there will be no doubt about what we do here. Yes, we have an arcade and The Blue Moon, a great cocktail lounge attached to the bowling center. You will also find a full-service pro shop, manned by a professional who knows bowling. When we chose to do upgrades to our facility, we had several options. Many centers are walling off lanes to

create a private boutique bowling area. Others are removing lanes altogether to make room for other attractions such as laser tag. No one is building new bowling centers dedicated to the sport of bowling as the primary attraction. In addition, many traditional bowling centers are closing for various reasons. The Management and Investors have dedicated our efforts to making Lunar Bowl the destination for BOWL-

ING in the Kansas City area. We have attempted to cover all bases. This starts with staff who greet you with a smile when you walk in the door and an attitude that lets you know they want you to have a great experience with us. In late September, we will be upgrading our arcade, adding games and simplifying game play by going to a ticketless redemption system. From bowling leagues, family entertainment, and Birthday parties for all ages to corporate outings, events, fundraisers and bowling tournaments. We do it all and do it well.

B&B Theatres stands for Bills and Bagby, two families that both launched movie theatres and joined forces-for business and love-in 1980. The history of B&B stretches back to 1924 when Elmer Bills, Sr., bought the Lyric Theatre in Salisbury, MO, and founded Bills Theatres. It was there that he met his future wife, Johnnie, while she played the piano along with the silent movies. Years later, their son Elmer Bills, Jr., was born into the business. In 1936, the elder Elmer hired 10-year-old Sterling Bagby as a concession clerk. Sterling grew up, fought in World War II and came home to marry his Higbee, MO

ticket seller, Pauline. Together, they started the Bagby Traveling Picture Show and roamed rural Missouri with their films, projection equipment, seats and snack bar. The Bagby Traveling Picture Show screened movies in barns, schools and parks. Eventually, Sterling and Pauline’s company evolved into a Kansas circuit of drive-in theatres and “hardtops” (their nickname for indoor theatres).

unflower Rental has been an equipment rental icon in Topeka for over 60 years. Originally opened in 1951, Sunflower Rental was located in North Topeka at 926 W Topeka Blvd. A short time later, Sunflower was presented with an opportunity to relocate to a prime commercial area After developing some good ties with another merchant in the area, Sunflower was able to acquire a large lot right next to the Shunganunga creek on 20th and Topeka blvd. Sunflower promptly put up a new building and by 1960, was firmly entrenched in the current location at 2010 SW Topeka Blvd. Sunflower Rentals’ founding father was Gene Wanamaker. In 1957 he hired Rick Wendland who shortly thereafter married Kay, Gene’s only daughter. Through hard work and sound business decisions, he built a solid business with a firm foundation in the construction community. Since his passing in 2005,

Rick’s strong work ethic, dedication and customer skills are still talked about today. Sunflower Rental purchased Blue Springs Rental in 1981. Blue springs Rental had already been in business for several years at that time and seemed the natural choice to start building Sunflower Rental’s expansion on.
