T

o celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Fall Fun Festival, the Blue Springs Chamber of Commerce has come up with the theme “Chamber and the Chocolate Factory,” from the book and movie “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” It’s the festival’s golden anniversary. There is a golden ticket contest; 20 are being mailed out. Whoever gets one can get it stamped by a chamber member and will have a chance to win one of two $500 cash prizes. Patrons are encouraged to dress up as characters from the movie, such as an Oompa Loompa. The festival will be open from noon to 10 p.m. on Sept. 13; from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sept. 14; and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Sept. 15 (carnival only). Some of the new activities include music bingo, which will take place Sept. 13 and 14 at the beer garden. It’s an activity in which people will be given cards with songs and artists on them. A DJ will play music and whenever the artist or song plays, then that spot on the card can be marked off. Once someone fills out an entire row horizontally, diagonally or vertically, they win a prize. Traditional bingo also will be available a parking lot off of Main Street. “We had that at our banquet in January, and everyone really liked it,” festival coordinator and chamber member Jeri Willingham said of music bingo. This year, there is also the possibility of fireworks. The chamber doesn’t have all the permits for it yet, but Willingham said there shouldn’t be an issue. If the chamber can

get clearance from the city of Blue Springs, the fireworks could be shot around 9-9:30 p.m. Sept. 14. “I am not sure we have ever had fireworks before,” Willingham said. Turn of the Century will headline from 9:30-11:30 p.m. Sept. 13 on the main stage; and Disco Dick & the Mirrorballs will headline at those same times on Sept. 14. The community stage, which is used for local dancers and musicians to perform will be open from 6-9 p.m. Sept. 13, noon-9 p.m. Sept. 14 and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 15. “Disco Dick and the Mirrorballs have a huge following,” Willingham said. “They just got back from a gig in Hawaii.” There will be more than 250 booths, with 40 to 50 being brand new to Fall Fun Fest. “We will have some really unique food items there,” Willingham said. The annual parade will go from 10

a.m.-noon Sept. 14. It starts at 15th and Vesper streets. The parade route goes south before turning east on Main Street and north on 10th Street before it ends at RD Mize Road near St. John LaLande Catholic Church. Following the parade will be the car show, which will be open from 2-6 p.m. located at 14th and Main streets. Extra parking will be available at North Price Chopper and Sidepockets, both off of Missouri 7. A shuttle will be available to take patrons to the festival site. The shuttle runs from 5-10:30 on Sept. 13 and 8 a.m.-10:30 p.m. on Sept. 14. No shuttle service is available on Sunday. For more information, visit bluespringsfallfestival.com.

The 47th Annual SantaCaliGon Days Festival

By Mike Genet mike.genet@examiner.net

T

he 47th annual Santa-Cali-Gon Days Festival runs from noon Friday, Aug. 30 to 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 2, transforming the Independence Square with more than 300,000 visitors and hundreds of vendors in a free gathering that celebrates the Santa Fe, California and Oregon trails history in Independence. The festival’s carnival, run by Wade Shows in the parking lot bounded by Kansas, Liberty, Wal-

nut and Osage, starts the evening of Thursday, Aug. 29. There is a cost for carnival rides, though all-day arm bands are available. To headline the festival’s entertainment, the Independence Chamber of Commerce secured Wynonna, the younger half of the famous mother-daughter country music duo The Judds, and her band The Big Noise to play at 9:30 p.m. Friday on the main stage. Lois McDonald, chamber vice president and festival organizer, said the chamber was able to get ahead of the game to secure Wynonna.

“She hadn’t announced their full tour yet, and we got her as she started to put together her tour,” McDonald said. “The routing worked out.” Whitey Morgan and the 78’s, also in the midst of a national tour, McDonald said, will be the headline act at 9:30 p.m. Saturday. Other musical acts performing include The Brad Cunningham Band, Big Time Grain Co., Hudson Drive, Edge of Forever, The Rippers, Special Forces, Almost KISS, Sequoia Newland, Alex Sons, The Trace, Julia Reynolds, Jesse Kinch, Fools Gold Country Review and Prairie Moon.

A full entertainment schedule can be found at www.santacaligon.com. The Main Street 1849 Experience returns to Santa-Cali-Gon, including blacksmiths, gold panning, an old-time photo booth, a one-room schoolhouse and games and toys and crafts, and there will be plenty of food options available around the Square. Off-site parking is available in the large lots at the Community of Christ Auditorium at 1001 W. Walnut Ave. Shuttle rides to the Square are $1 per person (handicap accessible shuttles available).

O

ktoberfest has been a staple in Lee’s Summit for the past 30 years. This year, the German folk festival will be open from 5-11 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, 10 a.m.11 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, and – carnival only – from noon-4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29. The grape stomp is one of the more popular attractions. It begins at 4 p.m. on Sept. 28 at the biergarten. It’s a contest in which teams of two people stand in a barrel full of grapes and stomp them to squeeze as much juice into a container as possible. The cost per team is $50 and must be paid in advance.

“I did it last year, and it’s not easy to do,” festival coordinator Connie Smith said. “The grapes were cold, your feet were cold and it was cold outside. Then the juice comes out of a little hole. There’s a technique to it.” Once again, Oktoberfest hill host a home brew competition from noon to 3 p.m. Sept. 28 at the biergarten. Home brewers will serve samples of their best brews, and patrons will have the opportunity to taste each one. The baby contest will begin at 11 a.m. on Sept. 28. It’s $5 to register online and $10 the day of the event. At the biergarten, patrons get German food such as sauerbraten, a traditional roast marinated in pick-

ling spices and served with sweet and tangy gravy. There’s more familiar German food available also, such as bratwurst, German potato salad, apple strudel and red cabbage. The biergarten will be open throughout the festival. In addition to the food and the contests, there will be musical performances. Country artist Noe Palma will headline the main stage (located on Douglas Street) at 8 p.m. on Sept. 27, an oldies pop rock band called Boomerz will be on the main stage at 4 p.m. Sept. 28 and a group called Just What I Needed, a Tribute to Cars (an ’80s band) will headline the main stage at 8:30 p.m. on Sept. 28. “This is the 30th year Lee’s Summit has hosted Oktobberfest,

so we wanted to get an 80s band,” Smith said. “(Just What I Needed a Tribute to Cars) is getting pretty popular in Kansas City. “We also have our community stage (at 3rd and Main Streets) that has local dancers and singers.” There also there will be sports tent, where patrons can watch games, and a wine tent, for people to taste various wines. Oktober is free and open to the public. On street parking, parking garages and parking lots will be available. For more information, visit www.lsoktoberfest.com.
