he 46th annual Santa-Cali-Gon Days will bring music, vendors, food and classic carnival rides to the Independence Square from Friday, Aug. 31 at noon to Monday, Sept. 3 at 5 p.m. A tribute to the origin of the Santa Fe, California and Oregon trails, the event has previously attracted more than 300,000 visitors. Festival music acts will include blues, rock and country, with headliners Black Stone Cherry (9:30 p.m. Friday), the Grammy-nominated Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band (9:30 p.m. Saturday) and Jacob Bryant (9:30 p.m.
Sunday), whose 2016 EP debuted at No. 7 on the iTunes Country Chart. The festival’s two stages will also welcome Feel, Hillbilly Vegas, Jericho Woods, Stone Senate, Randy Woody & Southbound Band, Dan Johnson, Alo Kelly, Sequoia Newland, Karma Kills, Nick Schnebelen and Liverpool: A Tribute to the Beatles. A full entertainment schedule can be found on santacaligon.com. “We are ecstatic to bring these world-class musicians to our community,” said Lois McDonald, vice president of the Independence Chamber of Commerce and the festival’s chief organizer. “The festival benefits our community in so many ways.”
In addition to music, attendees can visit more than 400 vendors, from concessions to arts and crafts. Notably, the new Uptown Farmer’s Market on the Square will host 20 booths in a set-up McDonald calls “like a marketplace from a movie.” As a nod to its historical theme, Santa-Cali-Gon Days will also incorporate an authentic blacksmith, antique firetrucks and a Vietnam-era helicopter. Those looking for a classic carnival experience can find it with a Ferris wheel, rides and games, as well as test their appetite with root beer chugging and ice-cream-eating contests. Festival-goers can enjoy free admission and show attendance, but should expect costs associ-
