Ten Collections to Care About

Alexander McQueen By Julian Reeves

PAGE 25 | ejing magazine

Lee Alexander McQueen 1969-2010 There is a certain amount of myth that surrounds the life and work of Lee Alexander McQueen, who in a short period of time became one of the most influential designers in history. The Bad Boy of fashion was a visionary, artist, rebel, angel, devil, prophet, genius, magician, and more of a force than a human being. His collections were always rich with context, be it experimental or exposing, and he never disappointed. The following are ten collections that exhibit the different sides of McQueen, in all aspects of his life. Enjoy.

PAGE 26 | ejing magazine

Nihilism Spring / Summer 1994 McQueen’s first professional show was all about exposure, vulnerability, and revolution. Staged in a retired garage, models smeared with blood and dirt staggered down the runway, as if they had been in a car accident. The clothes ranged from clear plastic skirts, with nothing underneath, to sharp fitted suits. One model wore a turtleneck short dress, with the fabric either wetted or laminated to expose her breasts. Another model wore beautifully tailored pants with slits all the way up the back of her leg. The audience had mixed feelings, but many identified the young designer’s work as “Something new to say.”

PAGE 27 | ejing magazine

No. 13 Spring / Summer 1999

McQueen’s thirteenth show exhibited his fascination with craft, handiwork, and machinery. Inspired by the work of William Morris and Rebecca Horn, No. 13 featured elegant designs, paired with materials not commonly used in fashion. Models wore silk trousers with corsets made of gigantic balsawood wings. Aimee Mullins, Paralympic athlete, modeled a pair of hand carved and heeled prosthetic legs. The finale consisted of Shalom Harlow, in a voluminous white cotton dress, spinning on a pedestal, as two robotic arts sprayed her with paint. Compared to Nihilism, this collection explored the beauty of McQueen’s experiments.

PAGE 28 | ejing magazine

Voss Spring / Summer 2001 Voss catered to McQueen’s love of bizarre and macabre history. Inspired by accounts of Victorian mental hospitals, Voss featured an array of new materials, silhouettes, and performance aspects, all contained within a bright, mirrored cube. Wearing dresses made of puzzle pieces, stuffed falcons, and razor clams, models wandered haphazardly inside of the space. Some of them twitched, some twirled, and some even trashed the garments they wore. At the end of the show, a glass case positioned in the center of the cube broke open, revealing a large nude woman with her head covered, and several tubes leading from her throat.

PAGE 29 | ejing magazine

It’s Only a Game Spring / Summer 2005 In McQueen’s S/S 2005 collection, models were arranged on the runway by race, hair colour, and style of garment. The models would walk, just like in a regular show, but then they would line up, and wouldn’t leave the stage. The audience was perplexed by the choreography, but enthralled by the clothing. Modern bustles, intricate hairpieces, and McQueen’s beautiful tailoring held the audience together, until the lights came down, and the stage became a gigantic chessboard. The models, arranged as the pieces, then began to play, until a winner was decided.

PAGE 30 | ejing magazine

The Widows of Culloden Fall / Winter 2006-07 McQueen had an intense fascination with genealogy, and he proved that with his 2006-07 F/W collection. Featuring gorgeous tartan, lace, feather, and fur pieces, The Widows of Culloden quickly became one of McQueen’s strongest collections, and brought a strong, yet beautiful view of Scotland to his viewers. There wasn’t an overwhelming performance aspect, because he let the clothes speak for themselves. Phillip Treacy, the famed milliner and McQueen’s personal friend, created several pieces for this collection, including the Perspex antlers seen above.

PAGE 31 | ejing magazine

La Dame Bleue Spring / Summer 2008 In 2007, McQueen lost his longtime friend Isabella Blow to suicide. In her honour, he and Treacy collaborated on a show, inspired by Blow’s favourite things. Inspiration included her closet, quotes by her, and birds. The clothing was relatively simple, featuring patterns and cuts that Blow loved to wear. McQueen revisited some of his past collections, and recreated pieces. Treacy made various hats especially for the collection, including the turkey feather butterflies seen above. Each piece was handmade, and though it was a fairly light collection, it was an unbelievably somber event.

PAGE 32 | ejing magazine

The Girl Who Lived in the Tree Fall / Winter 2008-09 McQueen’s love of history continued into his F/W 2008-09 collection, The Girl Who Lived in the Tree. Inspired by British Royals, and a fairy tale McQueen wrote himself, he created this collection with a sort of dark fantasy in mind. Using generous amounts of tulle, rich Indian fabrics, and glittering jewelry by Shaun Leane, McQueen told one of the greatest fashion fairytales of all time. In the story, a girl who lived in a giant oak tree was coaxed out by a prince, married him, and became a queen. Such romance and magic wasn’t usually put on a runway, and yet McQueen did it.

PAGE 33 | ejing magazine

The Horn of Plenty Fall / Winter 2009-10 In a time of economic difficulty, McQueen toyed with the idea of recycling. Using pieces from past collections, creative new materials, and even junk, he created The Horn of Plenty, a retrospective and commentary on reuse in the fashion industry. Hounds tooth patterns, fabrics milled to look like garbage bags, and hats made from pop cans swept their way on top of towering platform heels. The models circled a giant pile of junk, featuring some props from past shows, on a runway made of cracked mirrors. Some called it farce, and others called it one of the most important collections in fashion history.

PAGE 34 | ejing magazine

!

!

Plato’s Atlantis Spring / Summer 2010 As shown in No. 13, McQueen had an interest in technology, and marrying it to old world ideas. In Plato’s Atlantis, he imagined what would happen if humans returned to the oceans, where all life began, and what resulted stands today as one of his most famous collections. Complex patterns, geometric clothing, and almost mathematic detailing made up the bulk of this collection. What accompanied it were two technological aspects: live streaming, and robotics. Photographer Nick Knight filmed and live streamed the show over the Internet, with the help of a crew, and two robotic cameras that followed models along the runway.

PAGE!35!|!ejing!magazine!

!

!

Posthumous Collection (Angels and Demons) Fall / Winter 2010-11 In 2010, Alexander McQueen committed suicide after the death of his mother a few days before. The industry ground to halt as editors ran out of shows to write articles, make statements, and pay their respects. McQueen was halfway through a collection at the time of his death, and in his honor, the sixteen ensembles he had nearly finished were shown to a small group of guests. The pieces were inspired by old masters and Byzantine artists, and featured everything that McQueen was: history, detail, concept, art, beauty, and humanity.

The “New Kind on the Block” is now Jason Wu, and the whole fashion world is utterly obsessed with him. His radiant confidence, among with his natural humility and his dreamer eyes make people admire him far beyond him, but an appreciation for his work.

ittle known Jason Wu started his interest in fashion when he was in school. At age 16, he had already studied sculpture in Tokyo and began his fashion career by making freelance doll clothing designs for Integrity Toys; in which he had his own line. Later, he realized he wanted to be a designer and soon graduated from The New School at Parsons

o top of the world. His first line came out in 2006 with total success and won the Fashion Group International’s Rising Star Award in 2008, in the same year he was also nominated for the VOGUE Fashion Fund Award. Quickly, he escalated the ladder of success designing for customers such as Ivana Trump, Amber Vallentta, RuPaul, January Jones, and his client that propelled him into the spotlight: Michelle Obama. His sudden success allowed him to become the most influential and admired young fashion designer.

ichelle Obama Influence. Michelle Obama is considered Jason Wu’s career launcher. His work with the First Lady started with André Leon Talley introduced them to each other as he was providing style advice to her. Ever since, Michelle wears his creations quite frequently during public appearances and wore a Jason Wu dress for her VOGUE spread. The most memorable design was when he let Michelle Obama wear was the white chiffon oneshoulder dress the night of Barack Obama’s inauguration at the inaugural ball. This was recognized as one of her best looks if not the best look she was worn.

is style and aesthetic. Jason’s designs are known for being versatile and ageless as well as being filled with contract and a touch of lady-like classic sophistication. The characteristics in his silhouette is based on classic elements such as A-Line, pencil skirts, sleeveless sheaths, high-waisted shorts, and overall elements that compliment the waistline on a woman. It’s almost as it he is always giving us an example of what Christian Dior

himself preached in 1947 when he invented the ‘New Look.’ His aesthetic has lots of influence from his Asian background, as we can see in his FW’12 collection the clear inspiration with cut jackets, prints, and gold details. He contrasted all of this with a dash of military references such as jackets and army pants.

Ever since Gabrielle Chanel started her business back in the 40’s she has used tweeds and knits from Scotland. And that was the starting point for Karl Lagerfeld, Scotland and the romanticism from the Elizabethan Era. For Chanel, the pre-fall collection are not simply lookbooks, they are runway show presentations that celebrate the craftsmanship of every single person collaborating to make the collection possible. From jewelers to embroiders, as well as shoe makers and milliners, this collection was all about details. Elaborate layering was really present in this collection; tweeds on top of knits and changing the length of skirts made this heavy collection look lighter. Another element used was tartans. This time the focus on styling was the contrast of different geometric patterns mixed together. Classic Chanel accessories done in a new material added a breath of fresh air to the pieces Karl has reworked every season. And even though the quantity of looks was flooded, the transition between them didn’t affect the whole product. The last looks were perfection: white ivory, Elizabethan inspired basically resumed the show. Personally, I would have loved to see more of those last white looks, but in general the collection was incredible as always since there seems to be more focus on the side collection than on the couture.

Little by little unknown designers are starting to take on a role of changing fashion, in this case Phoebe Philo. A fresh new eye can change the typical silhouettes and transforming the way we see fashion. For this season she presented clothes that would embrace the woman’s body rather than hiding it. Big-fitting coats, pants, and shirts paired with body conscious accessories such as tight belts and high-waisted pants gave women options to play around with proportions. A lot of covering with the layered styling changed the look, giving women options. Philo not only proposed great clothing pieces but also incredible accessories, such as bags and belts, which tied the collection together very well. Big variety of materials used, such as leather, wool, and fur; that added that extra factor of luxurious clothes Celine is now known for.

3.1 Phillip Lim #prefall2013 Inspired by bikers and the entire environment of hard rock from the 90’s, Phillip Lim took tough inspiration and turned it into feminine modern clothes that any girl would want. And as we all know, styling has now become one of the most important elements in these day’s collections. Using the tough element of rock, Phillip used black leather and applied it into all the collection, from gloves to thighhigh boots and also jackets. Contemporary jackets with mixed materials, such as leopard print with leather, paired with plain shirts switched the mood of dressing into a more dark yet serious at the same time. The workmanship done in the pants were simply masterful and the use of color was spot on, the collection consisted of navy blue mostly with black and some touches of prints.

Inspired by embellishments from military uniforms, Frida Giannini made Italy proud with the masterful tailoring in this season’s lookbook collection. Keeping it dark as usual for a pre-fall collection, Gucci took on dark grays, brick red, military green, black, and turquoise. The addition of prints and lace made this tough Gucci woman feel sexy in a conservative way. The focus on construction was present all over the coats. Either the sleeves or the shoulders were exaggerated to create new bold shaped and accentuate part of the body people don’t normally acknowledge. There is something special about this ethereal elegance of the 50’s that brushed this collection beautifully.

Jason Wu #prefall2013 !! Continuing with the same rebellious state of mind, Jason Wu was inspired by S&M and his own dark side. Perhaps that’s exactly what he wants the woman he dresses to feel. To feel proud of her dark side and still be very pretentious but confident. Even though leather was the main material in this collection, sequins played a huge roll for eveningwear and sheer fabric made that woman even sexier. Playing with very dark colors such as black, purple, dark green and red; bright yellow, white and gold injected some lightness to the collection. Dark and mysterious is what intrigues people, and Jason Wu is on track with that.

Michael Kors #prefall2013 !! Michael Kors is known for giving us bright colors for some fall collections and this season was not the exception. And if you buy those clothes for sure you’ll be the first one to be found in a dark room. This collection in particular was inspired by his new favorite show called Killer Karaoke, but in reality how could he get inspired by people that sing while trying to guess weird disgusting things through a black sheet? But his obvious inspiration came from the 50’s glamorous style that is now on trend, apparently. Floral prints, fur coats, leather jackets, laced pants and skirts, bigfitting shirts, and gloves composed this exceptional collection as one of the most outstanding lookbook collections Mr. Kors has shown. Maybe there is something about the 50’s that will always come back to inspired people of our generation.

Missoni #prefall2013 !! A fashion house known for its incredible workmanship with knits, Missoni decided to take a new turn for this season while still maintaining their stamp in the knitwear department. Designer Angela Missoni introduced a menswear element to the collection. Shades of grey, purple, brown, dark mustard yellow, blue and black were the only colors presented. The Missoni woman can now layer her outstanding knit dress over a coat and paired it with knit stockings. The last portion of the collection was the most outstanding because of the use of sheer knits placed one on top of another to created different shades of black. Similar to a trend shown in the spring collections were the styling of thigh-high boots with short skirts and tailored jackets. The irony of adding feminine touches to menswear was turned upside down this time to create this incredible collection.

Narcisco Rodriguez #prefall2013 As one of the best minimal designers in New York Fashion Week, Narciso Rodriguez kept going with the same idea of simple and intricate rather than ‘flamboyant’ and ‘on your face’ clothes. For this lookbook collection he focused on tailored clothes that would work for any occasion. Leather shirts paired with the right pants changed the skinny pant silhouette that has been on trend for the past 5 years. The length of the skirts changed. Below the knee seems to be Mr. Rodriguez’s proposition to change the way people look at sexy now-a-days. Inner sexiness is what he wants his costumer to have while wearing his clothes.

Balenciaga #prefall2013 !! After 15 years of reworking the Balenciaga woman, Nicolas Ghesquière’s dismissal shocked the fashion world. Soon after, Alexander Wang was appointed head designer for the brand, yet this particular collection was done entirely by the house’s team of designers. Keeping in mind that the house of Balenciaga was very famous for its construction and incredible tailoring, the collection showcased pieces that presented that workmanship. They also paid homage to Ghesquière’s use of rich textures that made clothes look so rich. It was quite unusual the use of only dark colors in the collection, aside from one peach coat, and the sad floral prints on some items. Styling heavy coats with printed skinny pants softened the looks. The use of techniques celebrated what Cristobal Balenciaga created back in the 60’s. It is just a question of time to see Wang’s vision for the brand Nicolas built back up.

PAGE!53!|!ejing!magazine!

Louis Vuitton #prefall2013 !! Marc Jacobs is a chameleon when it comes to Louis Vuitton, changing the concept entirely every season. This time he moved from chess board to Addams Family meets girly chic. Concentrating on shoulders and the mini skirt, it is now all about focusing on the torso. Black, red, blue, and a touch of dark cream were the only colors presented for this lookbook collection. Wide shoulder jackets tailored masterfully to add volume to the sleeves. Moving away from serious dark clothes, Mr. Jacobs played with the clothes by injecting some groovy from the 60’s. Quite genius the way he tricked us with the prints by having printed lace on some looks to make it easier to wear, sometimes our eyes do play games to our minds. It seems as if he was trying to pay more attention to the clothes this time, instead of just plastering the looks with unnecessary bags and accessories.

Stella McCartney #prefall2013

The queen of sportswear chic managed to continue making sportswear appealing to the luxurious masses. This season Stella McCartney added some stripes and huge coats to change the game plan. The Stella woman knows she’s very sexy, yet there’s no need to show what you have, right? Big-fitting coats, pants, shirts, sweaters, and skirts were the focal point to start with. Women-friendly coats with many pockets, which perhaps explains there were only 7 bags in the 32 lookbook collection. Though some of the last dresses were a total miss, the coats saved the collection. This woman is not about tight clothes; she celebrates her life and is very comfortable and confident with herself.

PAGE!55!|!ejing!magazine!

Chloe #prefall2013 !! Sweet is not always a compliment when it comes to describing women now-a-days, but this Chloe girl is perhaps the sweetest one this seasons. Pastels throughout all the collection mixed with black pieces were the contrast that pulled this collection together. The coats were very masculine and tailored to perfection along with the airy, light dresses. Bootcut pants seemed to be the new ‘thing’ this season with leather boots and a plain t-shirt. The use of beautiful skirts with formal shirts changed the atmosphere and added sophistication to the looks. Prints were very toned down to focus more on the details on the clothes and not get carried away by them directly.

PAGE!56!|!ejing!magazine!

Christopher Kane #prefall2013

Memorable. That is one of the first words that come to our minds when thinking about Christopher Kane’s collections. This season he was inspired by vintage horror films to create this closet full of pieces that would intrigue and inspired people to want to own crazy clothes. And following with the same theme of obscure film is the dark color palette of blues, purples, gray, and black. Instead of making cute cocktail dresses, Kane made off-fitting dresses by changing the proportions and playing with sheer fabrics to create some gentleness. Velvet and fur simply came along the lines for this collection, fur dresses and shirts and why not add some blue floral prints. This is exactly what Kane is known for; changing what we normally find appealing and adding some twist to get our attention on his contemporary, playful clothes.

NYFW DO’S AND DON’TS By Lily Tan With just a few weeks until the Fall 2013 season of Fashion Week, we are all waiting to see the next ‘it’ trends. Excited, eager, anxious are some mixed emotions one might feel in anticipation of Fashion Week. Especially being born and immersed in a city like New York, where NYFW takes place twice a year in the much-celebrated Lincoln Center, I, like many others create our lives and our careers around this biannual event. Are we all on our toes yet? Literally, imagine being in die-high heels, waiting for seats. 1 hour is what the invite says, but 20 minutes a normal show’s run, but it takes months of prep work, and every second is worth it. In anticipation for the upcoming season, let’s take a look at how to survive and man-age

PAGE 63 | ejing magazine

the most hectic and important week to all of the fashion industry. New York Fashion Week once reigned at Bryant Park tents, but has been held at Lincoln Center beginning 2 short years ago. Since then, doubt for its move has diminished and grace and elegance has persevered. Now Columbus Circle and Lincoln Center has turned into a landmark for fashion as the new addition to the performing arts that it has be-en known for. There are some good rules to follow to make the best of Fashion Week. Rules are meant to be broken, but the basics never go out of style just like the LBD has always been a staple in every girl’s closet. There are very basic Do’s and Don’ts.

DO wear heels, they are a must. The rule of fashion week is the higher the better. Beauty is pain. You need to make many sacrifices for fashion, as do the designers do for their work too. However, we are not all Victoria Beckhams. A good rule of thumb is to always have a pair or flats to change in. Don’t go inside with flats (unless you’re suffering a leg injury of some sort.) You will be caught dead in a pair of flats inside. Stay safe. Change into heels beforehand, and change back into flats after. If you are carrying a small clutch that barely holds anything but is super chic, carry some scrunchable flats. You can be a lady and change back into them in your cab on your way back. Or just do it the ever-chic independent Sex and the City way and carry your heels. Just make sure you have shoes on to avoid the Carrie just getting her favorite Manolos robbed look.

DO’S

DO arrive half an hour before the show if you ever get a ticket. Ex: 1:30 for 2:00. Seats are not first come first serve, but it is definitely not a good idea to get there and be late—ending up with someone stealing your seat! It is also the time for photo-ops outside. Bloggers and professional photographers cover streetstyle, Bill Cunningham, Tommy Ton and the Sartorialist. Tourists and onlookers are all there to get the best pictures. It never hurts to arrive early, but DON’T be late unless you are pulling a Kimye at Stéphane Rolland Paris Couture Fashion Week (which doesn’t work unless you are Kimye or similar.) DO wear black, its season-less, timeless, chic, classic and is flattering for all shapes and sizes. Black will never fail you. However if you are feeling ‘all-black-is-soo-PR’ today, go for pieces that make a statement. An outfit that’s boldly styled in a chic manner might just be snapped for WWD. DO help yourself to sponsored water, drinks and goodies. There is usually a chic coffee shop and bakery located inside, so get your caffeine and energy bars to fuel up in between. DO get your WWD (if you already don’t) and Daily Front Row fix. They are given out to make sure you catch up on the latest news and stories if you haven’t already. You can also subscribe and read it daily to know the latest information in the entire industry from beauty to retail.

PAGE 64 | ejing magazine

DO follow the Buddy System. The Buddy System is something I made up that works efficiently most of the ticont. me. Unless you are going solo, or already are sitting in a desirable seat, there is no reason you would not want to move to a better seat. The Buddy System is if you are going with one acquaintance, stay with them and especially 10 minutes before the show starts, be a socializer. If the show is set in a smaller compacted, highly regulated by security show like in the Stage, your chances of the Buddy System are lower. However if a show is held in the Theatre, where there is anywhere from multiple hundreds up to thousand guests, you have higher chances of it working. You and your buddy with socialize all over. Go take photos and meet the celebrities and stylists. Your cue to start moving and eyeing seats left over in the first 2 rows are when the seats are pretty much filled and the show is about to start as you notice like the silence before the storm. There will most likely be good seats that are untaken in the front. It may have been reserved for the editor or buyer that didn’t attend and etc. You and you buddy need to look for more than one seat missing in a row. Most likely they are the ones that will not be taken. Make a chic walk for it and claim it like it was intended to be yours. Unless the seats in the very prime spots where it is marked with the names, your chances will be higher in a big show. You are safe when the plastic gets pulled off the runway.

DO’S

DO create your own! Why not? Finally something sweet to end a long night is a tradition. Designers all have a ritual they follow to distress from a long season. Some go on vacations right after, some get sleep, massages and spa therapy. Some just throw a big party. Why not create a traditional for post Fashion Week? As they say, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do” so you toss a coin in the Trevi Fountain and they say you’ll come back one day. Maybe it will be the coin you toss that raises your chances of coming back next season. I find mine not too glamorous, but we do like to do post-show talk while sitting on the Lincoln Center fountain, our own Trevi. Aside from wandering when the night is still young, Chinese takeout has been our fortune cookie! Fashion Week for me, is an escape from reality and into a world that changes every season. It’s when the entire fashion industry comes together and celebrates the new. So start tossing the coin into your Trevi and may your fashion week dreams come true because when in New York, do as the fashion people do.

PAGE 65 | ejing magazine

!

!! DON’T and never overreact to being there. Calmness and keeping cool are the winning acts for a better seating chance. With this we have jumped from 7th row into 1st or 2nd row twice and sat next to an undisclosed Elle editor. This is not a guaranteed system but a tactic that is guerilla style to finding better seats. Not everyone will know this and will stay in their far off seats. It makes all the difference when you feel the footsteps of the model coming down the runway—the best thrill of them all. (Warning: this system is not guaranteed to work and may get you kicked out of your seat if done incorrecttly. It is all about right timing.)

DONT’S

DON’T just stand or sit. Socialize and make connections. You never know what people you might just run into and meet. DON’T wear the unicorn-stuffed animal hat and fairy dust makeup if you are going to be avant garde and can’t stand being boring ol’ chic black. Too much is never chic. This is New York Fashion Week. You will have heads turning for sure--and just might land on the crazy style section of portraits on HONY (Humans of New York).
