THE UNIVERSITY EKU’s aviation program, the only university-based program in Kentucky, returned to Madison County Airport in 2008. Students have the opportunity to use two new Diamond DA-20 trainers, the same aircraft used by the U.S. Air Force Academy for beginning flight instruction.

Eastern Kentucky University’s Army ROTC Program ranked among the nation’s best in the 2007 Leadership Development and Assessment Course (LDAC). Among 132 institutions in the Eastern Region, EKU tied for first in basic rifle marksmanship, tied for second in peer evaluations, ranked 13th on the Army physical fitness test and 23rd in land navigation. In overall leadership, EKU ranked 13th and earned an excellent rating. EKU scored above the national average in every category. Eastern’s Fitness and Wellness Center opened in the fall of 2004 and features stateof-the-art equipment which is available free of cost for all EKU students. Included in the center is a 10,000-square foot weight area, a four-lane indoor track, two multi-purpose gyms, a climbing wall, locker and shower facilities and a lounge area.

Phase 1 of the University’s New Science Building, comprising 174,195 square feet at a cost of approximately $64 million, is expected to open for classes in the Fall 2011 semester. The first phase will house the Departments of Chemistry and Physics & Astronomy as well as science education (for the Department of Curriculum and Instruction) classrooms and laboratories.

EKU PRESIDENT Dr. Doug Whitlock Title: University President Year at EKU: Third year Alma Mater: Eastern Kentucky, 1965, ’66

Dr. Doug Whitlock’s love affair with Eastern began when he arrived on his hometown campus as a first-generation undergraduate student in 1961. It continued unabated throughout a 38-year career in various administrative and teaching roles at EKU, including a five-year stint as Vice President for Administrative Affairs, from 1998-2003. His last three years of service were as a half-time faculty member in the Department of Computer Science. As he addressed faculty and staff at a campus-wide convocation on Aug. 15, 2007, just two days after being named President for the interim, Dr. Whitlock recalled the tremendous difference the institution he cherishes has made in his own life. (The Eastern faculty) “largely made me what I was then and am now,” he said.

“I will admit to you that I love Eastern, and when my service in the presidency is finished, if I have helped more of you love her too, then I will have done my job.” – President Whitlock – On Oct. 22, 2007, the interim label was removed and now, as EKU’s 11th President, Dr. Whitlock is devoted to upholding the rich tradition of his alma mater while guiding her to even greater heights of excellence. After earning two degrees from Eastern – a bachelor’s degree in history and social science in 1965 and a master’s degree in history a year later – Dr. Whitlock earned his doctoral degree in higher education from the University of Kentucky in 1981.

In February 2009, Dr. Whitlock was on hand at the State Capitol to announce the partnership between Eastern Kentucky University and General Atomics to examine the potential for a cellulose-derived biodiesel fuel industry in Kentucky.

After two years of active duty with the U.S. Army, Dr. Whitlock returned to Eastern in 1968 to serve as Director of Publications. Three years later, he was named Director of Public Information. In 1976, he was tapped by President J.C. Powell to serve as Executive Assistant to the President, continuing in that role through the administration of President Hanly Funderburk. As Vice President for Administrative Affairs, Dr. Whitlock was responsible for Facilities Services, Public Safety, Information Technology and Delivery Systems, Media Resources, and University Farms. For a portion of his tenure, he also served as the institution’s chief financial officer. Dr. Whitlock has long been an active participant in community life, serving since 1999 on the Madison County School Board, including two terms as chair. He also has served as a consultant with the Kentucky School Boards Association. He is an Elder and past board chair in the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). He and his wife, Joanne, have been married 39 years and have two grown children, Robert and Janet. At his first convocation as President, Dr. Whitlock offered faculty and staff one gauge by which his stint as President may be judged: “I will admit to you that I love Eastern, and when my service in the presidency is finished, if I have helped more of you love her too, then I will have done my job.”

Did You Know … … Dr. Whitlock holds two degrees from Eastern Kentucky University – a bachelor’s degree in history and social science as well as a master’s degree in history.

HEAD COACH

Lindsay Basalyga Title: Head Coach Year at EKU: Fifth Season Hometown: Cincinnati, Ohio Alma Mater: Maryland, 2001 After four years of building the Eastern Kentucky University women’s soccer program from the ground up, Lindsay Basalyga enters her fifth season as head coach having firmly entrenched the Colonels into the upper echelon of the Ohio Valley Conference. Hired as the program’s inaugural head coach in 2005, Basalyga has helmed Eastern Kentucky soccer since its infancy. Following three years of a rugged assimilation into Division I soccer, the Colonels turned the proverbial corner in 2008 when Basalyga led the team to a 5-3 conference record and into the OVC Tournament – for the first time ever – as the two seed. With nine of 11 starters suiting up again this year, including three All-OVC performers, and a balanced and talented recruiting crop, Basalyga has put the pieces in place for EKU soccer to enjoy long term success and expectations are high heading into the 2009 campaign. “Sure, expectations are publicly higher this year than in the past,” Basalyga said. “But our goals within the team have always been that lofty. We wouldn’t be where we are now if we hadn’t held ourselves to such high expectations in the past.” Basalyga’s 2008 squad was defined by an unbending defense and an opportunistic offense. The Colonel backline recorded a program-record and OVC-leading eight shutouts and allowed only 19 goals in 19 games last year. Sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie Lynch led the OVC with a .864 save percentage while ranking second with 114 saves and third with a 0.95 goals against average. The Colonels’ success last season was legitimized by weekly and postseason recognition. Kayla Swearingen was named CoOVC Offensive Player of the Year while two Colonels were named

first team All-OVC (Maddy Shumaker and Heather Bruce) and three Colonels (Swearingen, Laura Caldon and Stephanie Lynch) earned second team All-OVC honors. Meanwhile, five Colonels (Lynch twice, Caldon, Eva Hollenberg, Gabriella Wolf and Lauren Imsande) earned OVC Offensive or Defensive Player of the week honors throughout the season, and Shumaker and Stephanie Murray were named to the OVC All-Tournament team following postseason play. In just four years, Basalyga has coached 10 All-OVC performers, as current Colonels Jessica Goshert and Carly Muller were named second team All-OVC in 2007, Georgia Koromelas was named to the OVC All-Newcomer team in 2006 and Christina Graul and Janine Davie were named to the second team All-OVC and the OVC All-Newcomer team, respectively, in 2005. On top of their on-field accolades, Basalyga’s teams at EKU have also thrived off the field. Basalyga was recently bestowed with EKU’s prestigious Coaches Academic Enhancement Award for the second consecutive year, given annually to the coach who most honors their commitment to recruiting dedicated student -athletes and placing a high emphasis on academics within their program. Since she started the Colonel soccer program in 2005, Basalyga has coached three OVC Medal of Honor Winners, seven Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society inductees, 20 Presidential Scholars and 44 Colonel Scholars. The Basalyga-led Colonels have also been awarded the coveted OVC Team Sportsmanship award for four years running, meaning every year of the award’s existence. “It is a huge honor to be recognized by OVC players and

Basalyga won the EKU Coaches Academic Enhancement Award for the second straight year in 2008.

In just the fourth year of the program’s existence, Basalyga led Eastern Kentucky into the OVC Tournament as the two seed in 2008. 6

ASSISTANT cOACH

Deb Benakis Title: Assistant Coach Year at EKU: Second Season Hometown: St. Charles, Ill. Alma Mater: Iowa State, 2005 Deb Benakis is entering her second season as an assistant women’s soccer coach at Eastern Kentucky University. She arrived at EKU from the Northwest Missouri State women’s soccer program, where she served two years as a graduate assistant. Benakis’ influence on the women’s soccer program at EKU was felt immediately. In just her first season at the school, The St. Charles, Ill. native helped lead the Colonels to their first ever appearance in the OVC Tournament and set numerous team records along the way, including wins (eight) and shutouts (eight). Because she is a defensive-minded coach, Benakis is the perfect complement to head coach Lindsay Basalyga’s attack-oriented ideas. With Benakis on staff, the Colonels can hold more effective split training sessions in which Benakis works with the backline and Basalyga with the attackers. “Deb brings a great balance to our program not only on the field but off the field as well,” Basalyga said. “Although we have very different personalities, we share similar philosophies on how the game should be played and coached which makes communicating with the team much easier. Her addition to the staff last year definitely had a huge impact on our success in the 2008 season.” Benakis stays active in local soccer outside of EKU as well. She is the Director of Coaching for the Madison United Soccer Club in Richmond, and she coached on the Kentucky Olympic Development Program staff in 2008. Before her two years as a graduate assistant at Northwest Missouri State, Benakis was a two-year captain on Iowa State’s women’s soccer team, where she played from 2002-05. At Iowa State, she started all 79 games of her career as a Cyclone, and in 2005, participated in the NCAA women’s soccer tournament. Before arriving at Iowa State, Benakis was a winner on sev-

eral different levels. From 1999-2001, she played for the Illinois Olympic Development Program, a feeder system for the US men’s and women’s national teams. From 1999-2000, Benakis played on the Region 2 Regional Pool. In club soccer, she was an Illinois State Cup Champion in 2001 and 2002, while playing for the Eclipse Soccer Club. In high school, she fared just as well, helping her squad win the Illinois high school soccer state championship in 1999 and 2000.

2009 Outlook 2008 will forever be remembered as the breakout season for the Eastern Kentucky University women’s soccer program. In just their fourth year of existence, and after three seasons of a rugged assimilation into Division I soccer, the Colonels recorded eight shutouts, earned six OVC player of the week honors, placed five student-athletes on All-OVC teams, boasted the Co-OVC Offensive Player of the Year and entered the 2008 OVC Tournament - for the first time ever - as the two seed. Head coach Lindsay Basalyga thinks her team belongs in the upper echelon of the OVC, and she doesn’t expect the Colonels to fade back into obscurity after one fluke season. “We never want to regress and we’re always looking for ways to improve,” Basalyga said. “The seniors want to leave their own legacy. Years from now, they don’t want to say, ‘Hey, guess what I did my junior year.’” The Colonels have some shoes to fill, especially in the offensive attack. Gone are Kayla Swearingen, who left EKU as the program’s all-time leading scorer and crowned her storied career with a Co-OVC Offensive Player of the Year award, and Laura Caldon, whose legend rests primarily in clutch play after she scored three straight game winners against conference opponents to put EKU in position to receive a first round bye in the tournament. Basalyga, however, is confident her current players will rise to the occasion. “We lost some special players and, as far as numbers go, we have some holes to fill,” Basalyga said. “But we have the personnel to step up to the challenge and fill the roles in the attack.” Other than Swearingen and Caldon, the nucleus of the 2008 OVC Tournament team returns intact, including the Colonels’ veteran-laden and oftentimes immovable backline. Seniors Maddy Shumaker (2008 first team All-OVC), Jessica Goshert (2007 second team All-OVC) and Eva Hollenberg (OVC Defensive Player of the Week for the week of October 7) and sophomore Stephanie Murray (2008 OVC All-Tournament Team) combined with junior goalkeeper Stephanie Lynch (2008 second team All-OVC) to record a program-record and OVC-leading eight shutouts last season while stifling their opponents to only 19 goals in 19 games. With nine of 11 starters and three of five All-OVC performers returning to a team that went 5-3 in the OVC last year, expectations are undoubtedly high for the Colonel soccer program heading into the 2009 season.

Kayla Swearingen’s header proved to be the game-winner against SIU Edwardsville. Or was it Jessica Goshert’s header? You decide.

“Sure, expectations are publicly higher this year than in the past,” Basalyga said. “But our goals within the team have always been that lofty. We wouldn’t be where we are now if we hadn’t held ourselves to such high expectations in the past.”

Goalkeepers Lynch started every game last year for the Colonels and performed admirably throughout her sophomore season. The Goshen, Ky. native had a part in all eight of EKU’s shutouts, as evidenced by her OVC-best .864 save percentage. She also ranked second in the conference in saves (114) and third in goals-against average (0.95) en route to being named second-team All-OVC at the conclusion of the regular season. Lynch was named OVC Goalkeeper of the Week twice during the season – first on Sept. 7 after recording a season-high 11 saves at Fresno State and then blanking San Francisco two days later during a 1-0 EKU win, and second during the final week of the regular season when she recorded consecutive shutouts to help lead the Colonels to a second seed in the OVC Tournament. Lynch will be pushed by redshirt freshman Emma Werner. Werner was a four-year varsity player at Kings High School in Maineville, Ohio and, as a senior in 2007, had just one goal scored on her all year. “Both keepers have to look at themselves as starters,” Basalyga said. “We don’t have a starting goalkeeper currently. It will be whoever is the most consistent and whoever is making the saves come game day.”

Defenders The Colonels’ backline was probably their strongest unit last season. EKU’s defense stifled opponents all year, but especially down the stretch when the Colonels allowed only three goals in their last six matches (and all three of those goals came in a 3-1 loss to top rated Murray State). The steady backline consistently kept the opportunistic Colonel offense within striking distance of teams. Unfortunately for OVC opponents, nearly every player from that backline is in uniform again this season. “Cleary the backline has been working together for a while now and is fairly in sync,” Basalyga said. “Our defense is our most solid line as far as not having to replace players.” Shumaker emerged as the vocal leader of the defense in 2008. 2009 OUTLOOK The reliable back from West Chester, Ohio started in every game for the Colonels and played an astounding 1,776 minutes, meaning she sat out just 20 minutes of play all season. For her efforts, she became one of the first EKU soccer players ever to be named first team All-OVC at the conclusion of the regular season. Shumaker’s stellar play continued into the postseason as she was named to the OVC All-Tournament team after the Colonels blanked UT Martin in the semifinals, only to lose to the Skyhawks in a shootout. Shumaker will be joined in the back by durable veterans Goshert and Hollenberg. Goshert was second on the team with 1,658 minutes played last year. The rangy back from Indianapolis was second team All-OVC in 2007 and consistently uses her superior height to score or assist goals off headers. Hollenberg, meanwhile, was third on the team with 1,632 minutes played and was named OVC Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 7 after playing every minute of both matches that weekend, notching an assist at Tennessee Tech and then leading the Colonels to a resounding 3-0 shutout of Austin Peay two days later. Murray should also see extensive time in the back. The Whitby, Ontario native played in every game last year as a rookie and saved her best for last as she was named to the OVC All-Tournament team along with Shumaker. IN THE COMMUNITY EKU Soccer in the Community The Eastern Kentucky University women’s soccer program prides itself on its involvement in the Richmond community, and especially its involvement with youth soccer in Richmond. “We have a lot of fun giving back to the kids in the community and using our talents to inspire them to take up soccer,” head coach Lindsay Basalyga said. “Not a lot of kids in this area play soccer, so anytime we can turn some of them on to the game, it’s very gratifying to us.” Every year, Basalyga and the Colonels host Youth Day at EKU Soccer Field following one of their regular season home games. Local kids are invited to attend the game, run out with the players during pregame introductions, participate in halftime games and then learn from the Colonels as the EKU soccer players host a skills clinic on the field after the game. More than 40 kids attended Youth Day at EKU Soccer Field last year as the Colonels taught them how to dribble, pass, shoot and protect the goal. The Colonel mascot was also in attendance at Youth Day and the kids, naturally, loved that. On top of Youth Day, Basalyga and the EKU soccer players host and participate in a number of youth soccer camps in the area. The Foothills Soccer Academy is hosted by the EKU soccer team every summer and takes place at EKU Soccer Field. Entering its fifth year of existence, the Foothills Soccer Academy usually hosts around 140 kids per summer and is focused on helping local players, of any skill level, develop their skills and knowledge of the game. Technique development is done appropriate to the age and skill level of each player. Players constantly have the ball at their feet for many repetitions and have many opportunities to achieve success. “I think the Foothills Soccer Camps are a great opportunity for local youths to get outside and learn the game from college soccer players,” Basalyga said.

Former Colonel Laura Caldon talks to a potentially future Colonel at the 2008 Foothills Soccer Academy.

The Colonel made a guest appearance at last year’s Youth Day and the kids in attendance appreciated it very much. 38

ON THE ROAD EKU Soccer on the Road It is the philosophy of head coach Lindsay Basalyga to take the Eastern Kentucky women’s soccer team on at least one road trip per year to a place outside of the region and with a climate unlike that of Kentucky’s. “I think it is important for our players - as athletes and people - to visit places out of their comfort area and play teams they wouldn’t usually get the opportunity to play against,” Basalyga said. “It not only prepares them for the soccer season ahead, it brings them closer as teammates as well.” Last year, the Colonels ventured to the west coast to take on Fresno State and San Francisco in the bay area. They went 1-1 on the trip (losing 1-0 to Fresno State before defeating San Francisco 1-0 on a game-winner by Heather Bruce); however, lost amid the soccer matches were a couple days of worth of sightseeing and camaraderie. The players took a boat to Alcatraz, toured San Francisco, walked around Lombard Street, enjoyed some Ben & Jerry’s and a trip to the Hard Rock Cafe, and even fit in some shopping down at Union Square. This year, the EKU women’s soccer team is heading south to the Sunshine State. The Colonels are slated to take on Jacksonville on Sept. 18 and then SEC power Florida two days later. “We are definitly excited about having a top-ranked SEC school on our schedule this year,” Basalyga said. “This is the level we are striving to get to so it will be a great indicator of where we are and where we need to be as a program.” While the Colonels wholly intend to win both games in Florida, the trip will - win or lose - feature iPod Karaoke on the way to and fro, and endless games of Beach Tennis in the sand. For that is the way of the Eastern Kentucky women’s soccer team on the road.

The players pose for a picture while shopping at Union Square in downtown San Francisco.

The Colonels wave goodbye to the Tennessee River before leaving Chattanooga with a 2-0 victory. 39

ATHLETIC SUPPORT SERVICES Bratzke Student-Athlete Academic Success Center The Chad Bratzke Student-Athlete Academic Success Center serves all student-athletes as a comprehensive academic resource center. The Bratzke Center and staff, located in Alumni Coliseum, is designed to aid EKU’s student-athletes in all facets of their academic pursuits. Our goal is for student-athletes at EKU to have a great athletic and academic experience, and graduate Dr. Randy Kennedy with Colonel pride. Director of Bratzke Student-athletes at EKU continue to excel acaCenter demically, with almost 50 percent of all studentathletes earning a 3.0 GPA. In the 2008-09 school year, 136 studentathletes were recognized at the Academic Awards breakfast for their accomplishments in the classroom, including the Bratzke Award of Excellence, Presidential Scholar, Dean’s List and the OVC Commissioner’s Honor Roll. EKU also continues to lead the OVC and all state programs in football APR (Academic Progress Report) scores which is determined by retention and eligibility. Named after Chad Bratzke, the former EKU All-American and Indianapolis Colts’ defensive lineman whose generous donation helped make the center possible, the Bratzke Center meets the needs of current EKU student-athletes. The 3,000-square foot Bratzke Center includes a tutoring center, a 27-station computer lab, an academic advising office suite, a teaching classroom and quiet study area. Student-athletes at EKU come in and utilize the center for studying, requesting and meeting with tutors, checking their e-mail or stop by for advising. The professional staff is trained to work with student-athletes in advising, class scheduling, monitoring academic progress and assisting student-athletes with academic success strategies. The Bratzke Center employs tutors trained to assist studentathletes in many different subjects. These tutors are a free service to EKU student-athletes and can be requested at any point throughout the semester. Tutors are trained to work with students and assist them in study skills, individual course instruction and encourage academic success. In addition, EKU has several tutoring labs on campus that are available to all students as well. In addition to the computer lab, EKU student-athletes also have access to a scanner and duplex printer in the lab, as well as laptop computers which are available to check out for team travel. These electronic resources assist EKU studentathletes to be successful while their team is in season. As a part of the departmental computer lab agreement, studentathletes are also able to access licensed software products such as SPSS, SAS, Adobe Photoshop and other useful programs. early in their academic career. These students meet once a week with a trained mentor and discuss time management skills, organizational skills, as well as track upcoming assignments through weekly WIN reports. This information is helpful to the studentathletes but is also shared with the coaching staff to keep them updated on the students progress. Student-athletes with disabilities or barriers to learning may be in the WIN program but the Bratzke staff also assists with their registration with the Office of Disability Services (ODS) to make sure students are provided with proper documentation. Academic monitoring entails ensuring that student-athletes are making progress towards a degree as specified by the NCAA and OVC, and successfully monitoring class participation through communication and early alert programs. Faculty report grades twice a semester to the Bratzke staff to help avoid potential problems and pitfalls. In addition, EKU faculty post midterm grades so that students at EKU can track their course progress. The Bratzke Center also communicates regularly with studentathletes through the EKU Bratzke Center web site, as well as e-mail messaging about important information. The Bratzke Center is headed by Dr. Randy Kennedy, Director of Athletic Academic Advising. He is assisted by Jennifer Parsons and Jenna Sample.

CITY OF RICHMOND Richmond is home to many interesting and convenient activities. Whether it’s arts and entertainment, recreation, or shopping and dining out you are looking for, Richmond has it all. With more than 100 buildings in Richmond on the National Register of Historic Places and three areas on the National Register of Historic Districts, it is one of Kentucky’s finest restored 19th Century commercial districts. Arts and entertainment take center-stage with the Eastern Kentucky University theatre program. They offer several shows each year from classical theatre to modern musicals. Local artistic talents are on display year round at Gallery On Main. This is a perfect showcasing of local talent and an opportunity for community involvement. There is never any lack of recreational activities in Richmond. An array of parks and recreational centers across the city offers something for everyone. Lake Reba Recreational complex includes golf, little league baseball and softball fields, soccer, fishing and a water park which opened in the summer of 2008. If it’s shopping you want, downtown Richmond can accommodate you. Locally owned businesses line the historic streets of downtown Richmond with everything from fine antiquities to exquisite jewelry. There is a wide variety of stores at the brand new Richmond Centre as well. The outdoor mall offers shoppers convenience and style. Dining isn’t hard to find either. Family-owned and major chain restaurants give Richmond a unique variety of menus. Local hot spots include Madison Gardens, which is uniquely Richmond, to restaurants such as Applebee’s, Logan’s Roadhouse, O’Charley’s and Outback Steakhouse. Whatever your pallet craves, Richmond dining offers a variety of tastes made to satisfy. Never far from mainstream, Richmond offers the comforts of simplicity with the convenience of the city. Only 29 miles from Lexington and the Bluegrass Airport, Richmond is easily accessible to all travelers. Interstate 75 is a major artery of both state and national motor transportation. Richmond’s location on I-75 makes it an important factor in making the city a commercial hub. In fact, the ease of travel to and from Richmond makes the city an ideal spot for those who enjoy outdoor activities. Fort Boonesborough State Park is located only 12 miles from EKU’s campus, while Natural Bridge State Park (63 miles) and Cumberland Falls State Park (100 miles) are located nearby. Also within easy driving distance of Richmond are the Kentucky Horse Park, the state capital in Frankfort, Herrington Lake, My Old Kentucky Home at Bardstown, White Hall State Shrine and thoroughbred horse racing at Keeneland.

Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville hosted the 2008 Ryder Cup.

The Kentucky Derby takes place on the first Saturday in May at historic Churchill Downs in Louisville.

The state capital of Frankfort and Lexington are both within an easy hour drive from campus.

Main Street in downtown Richmond is right around the corner from the EKU campus.

A Brief Richmond History Richmond was founded in 1798 by Colonel John Miller, a Revolutionary War soldier. In 1798, the Kentucky Legislature authorized the moving of the Madison County seat from nearby Milford to land owned by Colonel Miller. The move was bitterly opposed by about 300 residents of the Milford area and a fight to retain the seat resulted between Dave Kennedy, who represented the Milford location, and William Kearly, who represented the new site. Although history does not record the results of the brawl, the county approved the move in March of 1798 and two acres of land were purchased from Colonel Miller. Court was held in his barn. On July 4, 1798, the site was officially named Richmond in honor of Miller’s birthplace, Richmond, Va.

The National Corvette Museum is located in Bowling Green.

EKU SOCCER FIELD EKU Soccer Field The Eastern Kentucky University women’s soccer team makes its home at one of the finest soccer facilities in the Ohio Valley Conference. Built in 2006 and located on the Eastern By-Pass next to Patty A. Clay Hospital, EKU Soccer Field is the home of a state-ofthe-art 115x75 yard field with Bermuda grass maintained by an in-ground irrigation system. The field is equipped with World Cup draw back goals, a state-of-the-art scoreboard, 25-foot high nets behind the goals, a 33-foot video tower and press box to go with covered player benches to add comfort for the home and visiting teams. In addition, 15 feet off the opposite sideline is the players’ locker room which has showers, laundry facilities and a player lounge. The players’ lounge features a 42” flat screen TV with Dish Network and Fox Soccer Channel, and an ice tank. The fieldhouse also features a visiting team’s locker room. “We’re very proud of our facilities,” head coach Lindsay Basalyga said. “Every year, we try to do at least one improvement to the soccer complex to enhance the experience for the players and for the fans who attend our games.” This year, new bleachers were installed at the field to make the venue more comfortable for EKU soccer’s growing fanbase, a fanbase which has given the Colonels a true homefield advantage. Basalyga’s 2006 squad went 4-2-2 at EKU Soccer Field in just its first year and their second year of existence, and the Colonels have scored big non-conference wins over Detroit, Indiana State, Evansville and SIU Edwardsville since moving into the new facility. “The players really feel at home at EKU Soccer Field,” Basalyga said. “They sweat, fight and compete here, and it has really become a part of the Colonel soccer experience.”
