Season Outlook “Even though we are entering our seventh season, we are still a very young program relative to the rest of the country,” Basalyga said. “Every season our expectations rise in terms of what we are asking of our athletes, both on and off the field. We have more depth than we have ever had in every position and there is a lot of pressure to perform in training on a consistent basis - this is how it’s supposed to be. There are a lot of players who should be playing and could be playing, but playing time will come down to who is willing to consistently put in the work on the defensive side of the ball, who is able to keep the ball, and who is going to give us the best chance to win soccer games.”
Season Outlook The Eastern Kentucky University women’s soccer team is one of only four Ohio Valley Conference teams to qualify for the league tournament each of the last three seasons, and head coach Lindsay Basalyga has transformed her seven-year-old program into a consistent contender for the conference crown. The Colonels were picked to finish sixth in the OVC by conference head coaches and sports information directors this preseason, but that prediction is most likely based on the team’s youth (two seniors, four juniors, 11 sophomores, and eight freshmen). Basalyga, however, does not see her team’s youth as a limitation; she sees it as a positive. “This is the youngest team we’ve ever had, with just two seniors and four juniors,” Basalyga said. “But that’s not something we’re worried about. We’re actually excited about our youth. There is a different spirit in preseason that we’ve never had before.” Basalyga’s faith in her youth movement is grounded in last year’s numbers, when the 2010 Colonels created a potent offense that broke or tied team records for goals (20), points (53), assists (13), corner kicks (65), goals in a game (five) and points in a game (13). The key? 60 percent (12-of-20) of the goals and 62 percent (33-of-53) of the points were scored by freshmen, and 54 percent (7-of-13) of the assists were dished out by freshmen. Behind those numbers, Basalyga is confident that the athletes the coaching staff has brought in possess the talent and determination to contribute in the OVC immediately. “Our incoming class comes from very competitive backgrounds, and we’re definitely expecting them to contribute this year,” Basalyga said. Helping along the incoming class is a talented group of returning players that includes sophomore forward Nicole Donnelly, a 2010 first team All-OVC selection who scored a program-record six goals last year (three of which were game-winners), junior defender Deja Tennon, a 2010 second-team All-OVC selection, and senior stalwart Stephanie Murray, who played every minute of every game on the backline in 2010, but who will most likely see increased time as a forward in 2011. Those three will be joined by an array of talented and creative veterans, almost all of whom played a large role in last year’s success. With so much returning firepower, EKU’s always-rising expectations are not to qualify for the 2011 OVC Tournament, but to win it.
Goalkeepers If there is a glaring question mark going into the 2011 season, it is at goalkeeper, as EKU faces the daunting task of replacing four-year starter and two-time all-conference keeper Stephanie Lynch. Luckily, Basalyga has two capable candidates, both of whom are pushing each other to win the starting job. The first is sophomore Lyndsay Vance, a tall, rangy keeper who earned one start in place of Lynch last year and made the most of it, recording nine saves and playing all 110 minutes of a hotly-contested, double-overtime scoreless draw at Valparaiso, a team that, at that the time, was averaging over two goals per game and had not been shut out all season. Vance was named OVC Goalkeeper of the Week for her effort in that game. The second is freshman Annie Wickett, an athletic keeper out of Fredrick, Md. who was a field player in high school, but a keeper on her club team, The Bethesda Riptide SC, which she helped lead to two State Cup Finals, one State Cup Semifinal and a WAGS League Championship. “Both keepers bring different qualities to the position,” Basalyga said. “Both saw time in our exhibition game at IPFW, but the starting job is still up in the air. In the end, it will come down to who is the most consistent at keeping the ball out of the back of the net.”
Thirteen of the Colonels’ program-record 20 goals in 2010 were scored by freshmen

Season Outlook

Forwards
Aside from Murray (who will play a different position in 2011), EKU returns every starter from a backline that surrendered only six goals in eight OVC games and recorded six shutouts in 2010. The speedy Tennon, senior Heather Bruce, a strong, versatile player who started 11 games last year before suffering a season-ending knee injury on October and sophomore Emily D’Italia, a transfer from Robert Morris University, will compete for time at the center back position. Junior Hayley Wright, a two-year starter on the backline, and sophomore Lauren Fant, an athletic, offensive-minded defender who scored a goal and assisted on two more last year, will compete for time on the outside, as will sophomore Courtney Klaas, who, according to Basalyga, “has an incredible work rate,” and freshmen Ashley Ryan, who is “extremely athletic,” and Paige Larkin, who is “a true left-footed player who likes to get forward.” “We’re still looking to play four in the back, but we’re looking for center backs who are good in the air, can hold possession when we have it and defend hard around the 18, and outside backs who are aggressive and really want to get into the attack,” Basalyga said.
In its seven-year history, the EKU soccer program has been a defensiveminded one; however, the Colonels scored 20 goals last year and Basalyga thinks the pieces are in place to create even more chances in the attack this season. That all starts with Donnelly, who exploded onto the OVC and national scene by scoring consecutive game-winners against defending OVC Tournament champion Murray State and defending OVC regular season champion UT Martin in one weekend. For her efforts, the rookie offensive sparkplug was named the OVC Offensive Player of the Week and became the first Colonel ever to receive national attention when the website CollegeSoccer360.com named her a National Primetime Performer of the Week. Donnelly will have help in the form of Murray, a converted defender who has only attempted six shots in her career but who possesses good speed and is good on the dribble, and sophomore Janelle Coates, an active, opportunistic forward who buried three goals and assisted on another last year. Freshman Devon Saini, who scored the Colonels’ lone goal in their exhibition with IPFW, as well as sophomores Sarah LeBrun and Maggie Whitfield and freshman Stephany Ellison, all of whom Basalyga described as “hard-working forwards who are very opportunistic,” will compete for playing time up front. “I think we have more creative players up front this year,” Basalyga said. “And, hopefully, that will translate into more goal-scoring opportunities.”
Midfielders “This is the area of the field where I think competition for playing time will be the greatest,” Basalyga said. EKU returns several starters to the midfield, including sophomore Tess Akgunduz, who Basalyga praised as a great distributor of the ball, and junior Katie Collar and sophomore Brittany Nomady, both of whom Basalyga cited as very creative, attacking players. Akgunduz, Collar and Nomady combined to record five assists last season, and the skilled trio will look to be even more active in distribution this season. They will be pushed all season by sophomore Kristan Paynter, a hardworker who appeared in all but two games last season and showed the ability to possess the ball out of pressure, and freshmen Kaylynn Brown and Sydney Montgomery, both of whom Basalyga said have shown flashes at practice and “are buying into the system we are looking to play as a team on the defensive side of the ball, as well as up top.” Freshman Whitney Wallace, meanwhile, is a versatile player who will see time in the midfield. “We have a lot of quality midfielders, but what it boils down to is who’s going to put the work in on the defensive side of the ball,” Basalyga said. “That will dictate who starts and receives consistent playing time.”

Head Coach Lindsay Basalyga and the university in a competitive, yet professional, manner in and out of the conference.” Basalyga’s fresh, innovative take on coaching soccer extends to recruiting as well, where she looks for players who want to be a part of an exciting program on the rise. Because she is looking for a certain type of player, Basalyga allows current Colonels to be very involved in the recruiting process and voice their opinions about whether or not a prospective recruit would fit in the system. “It’s my job, as head coach, to project whether or not a player fits into our system on the field,” Basalyga said. “Once they arrive on campus, however, it’s the player’s job to close the deal.” Basalyga also stays involved in soccer outside of EKU, as she is a regional staff member for the Region 2 Olympic Development Program this year. Prior to Eastern Kentucky, Basalyga spent four years working with the University of Toledo women’s soccer team. Basalyga joined the Rockets’ staff in 2001 as a graduate assistant and, two years later, was promoted to the top assistant position. While at Toledo, Basalyga aided in all aspects of the program, gaining experience in field coaching, implementing of practice plans and recruiting. The Rockets’ 2004 recruiting class was nationally recognized, ranking 14th in the Great Lakes Region. A four-year letterwinner on the University of Maryland women’s soccer team, Basalyga helped the Terrapins advance to the NCAA College Cup in four consecutive seasons. The three-year starter tallied eight goals, nine assists and 25 points throughout her career. During her senior campaign, Basalyga set the school record for most goals (four) and most points (nine) in an NCAA Tournament. As a senior, Basalyga, who was recruited by former U.S. women’s national team coach April Heinrichs prior to her departure to the University of Virginia, helped lead the team to a program-best 4-3-1 mark in the ACC and a second-place finish. Basalyga was an all-city and all-league player at Turpin High School and spent four years with the Olympic Development Region II team. In addition, she attended U.S. youth national training camp on three different occasions. Her father, John, is beginning his ninth season as the men’s soccer coach at Northern Kentucky University, where he led the Norse to an NCAA Division II National Championship in 2010. Before NKU, he coached the boy’s soccer team at Basalyga’s high school alma mater for 24 years. The Cincinnati, Ohio native received her bachelor’s degree in art studio from Maryland in 2001 and later earned a master’s degree in recreation and leisure studies from Toledo. She is the daughter of John and Linda Basalyga and has one brother, Ryan (29), and one sister, Courtney (28).
Head Coach • 7th Year at EKU (29-65-14)
Lindsay Basalyga Alma Mater: Maryland, 2001 After six years of building the Eastern Kentucky University women’s soccer program from the ground up, Lindsay Basalyga enters her seventh season as head coach having firmly entrenched the Colonels into the upper echelon of the Ohio Valley Conference. Hired as the program’s inaugural head coach in 2005, Basalyga has helmed Eastern Kentucky soccer since its infancy. Following three years of a rugged assimilation into Division I soccer, the Colonels turned the proverbial corner in 2008 when Basalyga led the team to a 5-3 conference record and into the OVC Tournament – for the first time ever – as the two seed. EKU enters 2011 as one of only four OVC teams to qualify for the league tournament each of the last three seasons. With three All-OVC performers back from 2010 - including recordbreaking forward Nicole Donnelly – a veteran defense that has allowed only 20 goals in the Colonels’ last 24 regular season OVC games and a massive recruiting class on which Basalyga worked tirelessly to assemble, the pieces are in place for EKU soccer to enjoy long term success and expectations are on the rise heading into the 2011 campaign. “Even though we are entering our seventh season, we are still a very young program relative to the rest of the country,” Basalyga said. “Every season our expectations rise in terms of what we are asking of our athletes, both on and off the field. We have more depth than we have ever had in every position and there is a lot of pressure to perform in training on a consistent basis - this is how it’s supposed to be. There are a lot of players who should be playing and could be playing, but playing time will come down to who is willing to consistently put in the work on the defensive side of the ball, who is able to keep the ball, and who is going to give us the best chance to win soccer games.” The Colonels’ success over the last three seasons has been legitimized by weekly and postseason recognition. In 2010, Donnelly and Carly Muller were named first team All-OVC while Deja Tennon was named second team All-OVC. EKU also received its first taste of national recognition in 2010 when Donnelly was named a National Primetime Performer of the Week by the website CollegeSoccer360.com following a weekend in which she score consecutive game-winners against defending OVC Tournament champion Murray State and defending OVC regular season champion UT Martin. In 2009, two Colonels (Lynch and Ashley Green) were named second team All-OVC while another (Alex Hess) earned a spot on the OVC All-Newcomer Team. In 2008, Kayla Swearingen was named Co-OVC Offensive Player of the Year while two Colonels were named first team AllOVC (Maddy Shumaker and Heather Bruce) and three Colonels (Lynch, Swearingen and Laura Caldon) earned second team All-OVC honors. In just six years, Basalyga has coached 16 All-OVC performers, as Muller and Jessica Goshert were named second team All-OVC in 2007, Georgia Koromelas was named to the OVC All-Newcomer team in 2006 and Christina Graul and Janine Davie were named to the second team AllOVC and the OVC All-Newcomer team, respectively, in 2005. On top of their on-field accolades, Basalyga’s teams at EKU have also thrived off the field. In 2010, Basalyga was bestowed with EKU’s prestigious Coaches Academic Enhancement Award for the second consecutive year, given annually to the coach who most honors their commitment to recruiting dedicated student -athletes and placing a high emphasis on academics within their program. Since she started the Colonel soccer program in 2005, Basalyga has coached three OVC Medal of Honor Winners, seven Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society inductees, 20 Presidential Scholars and 44 Colonel Scholars. The Basalyga-led Colonels have also been awarded the coveted OVC Team Sportsmanship award for five years running, meaning every year of the award’s existence. “It is a huge honor to be recognized by OVC players and coaches with the Sportsmanship Award for the fifth consecutive year,” Basalyga said. “I am certainly proud of how our players continue to represent themselves

Brenton Saylor is in his first season as an assistant coach/goalkeepers coach for the Eastern Kentucky University women’s soccer team. Saylor joins the Colonels after spending two years as the graduate assistant women’s soccer coach/goalkeepers coach at UT Martin. “Brenton is a great addition to our coaching staff,” head coach Lindsay Basalyga said. “He will be able to help us immediately both on and off the field because he knows the conference and understands what we need to do to continue to grow in the OVC. This is the first time we have had a qualified goalkeepers coach on staff so I’m definitely excited about that addition.” While Saylor was at UT Martin, the Skyhawks were one of the top soccer programs in the OVC, winning the regular season conference title in 2009 with a 9-7 record and reaching the finals of the OVC Tournament in 2008 after recording a regular season record of 10-5-2. The Skyhawks finished the 2008 season with the 21st lowest goals against average in the country. Saylor also contributed to several individual success stories while coaching at UT Martin. From 2008-09, two Skyhawks were named first team All-OVC, five were named second team All-OVC, five were named to the OVC All-Newcomer team and one was named the OVC Defensive Player of the Year. In 2008, UTM goalkeeper Johanna Rathbun broke 10 school records and maintained the 25th lowest goals against average in the country. In 2009, the Skyhawks’ keeper, Aubrey Buehler, was named to the OVC All-Newcomer team and earned conference Goalkeeper of the Week honors for the week of November 2. Saylor was also instrumental in the Skyhawks’ high academic standards while he was there. In 2009, UTM’s Jamie Furstenburg received the OVC All-Conference Scholar Athlete award, and five players received NSCAA Academic All-American recognition during Saylor’s tenure. In 2008, UTM received the OVC Team Academic Achievement award with a team GPA of 3.66. Saylor served as the Skyhawks’ interim head coach for a month after former head coach Craig Roberts departed in February. Before arriving at UT Martin, Saylor served as an assistant boy’s soccer coach at Liberty Magnet High School in Jackson, Tenn from 2006-08. While working in Jackson, Saylor also served as the Director of Goalkeeping for the Jackson Wolves Soccer Club. Before pursuing a career in coaching, Saylor was the starting goalkeeper at Lambuth University from 2004-07. During his stellar career at Lambuth, Saylor was an honorable mention NAIA All-American and an NAIA All-Region selection and Lambuth’s Male Athlete of the Year in 2007. He also helped lead the Eagles to a Trans-South conference championship while he was there. Saylor earned his bachelor’s degree in sports management from Lambuth in 2008 and is currently working on a master’s degree in education with an emphasis on health and human performance at UT Martin.
Alex Raich is beginning her first year as a graduate assistant for the Eastern Kentucky University women’s soccer team following a stellar career for the Colonels. Her primary roles will be on-field coaching, organizing team travel and recruiting. “I’m really excited to see Alex extend her passion for the game beyond her playing career, and I’m pleased that she can do it with a program she has helped build,” head coach Lindsay Basalyga. “I think she is going to be a valuable resource for our program over the next two years, seeing that she can easily relate to the players while already understanding the values and expectations we have as a program. Having an additional person will also help us get a lot more accomplished in training with Alex spending most of her time working with the attacking players.” A vocal leader for EKU since her arrival on campus in 2007, Raich played in 72 games in her career, third most all-time, and was one of the best goal scorers in program history, as she is second all-time at EKU in career goals and points. She scored three goals as a freshman in 2007, tied for third most on the team. As a junior, she tallied two goals, one against BIG EAST foe Cincinnati and the other the game-winner against Jacksonville State. She also recorded the game-winning assist to Carly Muller in the 86th minute against SEMO that year, propelling the Colonels to another OVC Tournament berth. As a senior, she scored one goal and tallied two assists. A four-time Colonel Scholar and a consistent member of the Dean’s List and President’s List, Raich graduated in the spring of 2011 with a degree in sports management and, after graduation, travelled to Guatemala through Soccer Without Borders to help the communities there and volunteer as a soccer coach. She is currently working on her master’s degree in sports administration.
Alex Raich finished her EKU career tied for second all-time in career goals and third all-time in career assists
