The site, which is powered by Sidearm Sports, features the latest news on all the EKU athletic teams. Live stats, feature stories, rosters, photo galleries and up-to-date schedules are just a few of the things that can be easily accessed through the site. The site also features streaming audio for each football game, streaming video for all home games, press conference video clips and breaking news as it happens. Season Outlook just a matter of making it all come together. “Personnel-wise, we have a lot of experienced players who can play a lot of diﬀerent roles,” Basalyga said. “We are now just trying to figure out what type of formations best suit this team and highlight our individual players’ strengths. I also feel like we have a lot of leadership on this team, both on the field and oﬀ the field, and we will be looking for that to continue throughout the entire season.” Adding to that experience is a capable group of nine newcomers who will instantly upgrade the team in at least one department: athleticism. “We added a lot of athleticism in our freshman class, and the returners put in a lot of work in the weight room with strength coach Kenny O’Mary,” Basalyga said. “The level of play athletically has certainly risen at practice, and I think our freshmen are really complementing our returners.”

Season Outlook The Eastern Kentucky University women’s soccer team has finished as the Ohio Valley Conference regular season runner-up twice in the last four years and is one of only three teams to finish in the top-six in the OVC regular season standings each of the last four years. The Colonels have firmly established themselves as one of the top programs in the conference, and now, it seems, there is only one goal left to achieve: an OVC title. “Our senior and junior classes are looking to carve a different path this year than they have in previous years,” head coach Lindsay Basalyga said. “They’ve been to conference tournaments, which have become the standard; but I truly feel like, this year, they’re looking to step out of their comfort zones and achieve success on a different level.” The Colonels will have to achieve that goal of “carving their own path” with a proverbial bull’s-eye on their backs. In 2011, EKU was picked to finish sixth out of 10 teams in the preseason OVC poll, but shocked the prognosticators by winning seven of its last 10 games to earn a No. 2 seed and a spot in the semifinals of the OVC Tournament. There will be no sneaking up on anyone in 2012, though. The Colonels have been picked to finish fourth of out of 11 teams this season (Belmont is now a full-fledged member of the OVC), their highest preseason ranking since 2008. EKU, however, boasts the experience to match that lofty ranking. In fact, for the first time in several years, EKU can be considered a veteran team entering the 2012 season. The Colonels are led by three seniors and eight juniors, almost all of whom have played key roles in the past. Leading that group of talented, battle-tested upperclassmen are senior Deja Tennon and junior Lauren Fant, second team All-OVC performers in 2011. Tennon, Fant and sophomore Paige Larkin, a 2011 OVC All-Freshman selection, were leaders of a formidable EKU backline last fall that did not allow multiple goals in any of the Colonels’ final 12 regular season games, and all three will be expected to anchor another strong Colonel defensive unit this fall. EKU’s most prolific offensive player, junior Nikki Donnelly, is also an upperclassman. Donnelly was injured during the early part of last season, but came on strong down the stretch and, this year, will look to regain the form and firepower that made her one of the most feared scorers in the league as a freshman in 2010. The talent and experience are in place at EKU this season. Now, it is

Goalkeepers If there is one position lacking in experience, it is goalkeeper. EKU will start a freshman keeper for the second straight year. If the past is any indication of the future, however, that might not be a problem. Last year’s rookie keeper, Annie Wickett, made 83 saves and recorded three shutouts, earning second team All-OVC honors. Moreover, EKU has a history of developing strong goalkeepers, as Wickett, Christina Graul (2005) and Stephanie Lynch (2008-09) have all earned all-conference recognition in the last seven years. Samm Melton and Erika Wolfer are the two newcomers battling over the opportunity to become the next decorated EKU keeper. Melton, a tall, rangy keeper, is from Francis Howell High School in St. Charles, Mo., while Wolfer, who Basalyga noted was a good shot stopper and good at coming oﬀ her line, is from Ursuline Academy in Cincinnati. “Both Samm and Erika bring diﬀerent abilities to the position,” Basalyga said. “Even though they’re freshmen, they’re going to have to show confidence and leadership from the start. Whoever shows the most consistency in keeping the ball out of the back of the net is going to win the starting job. It’s that simple.”

EKU has long been known for its strong backlines, and this year should be no diﬀerent. The Colonels return a swath of talented defenders, especially on the outside, where all-OVC returners Fant and Larkin will roam this fall. “Lauren and Paige’s athleticism and speed and their ability to get forward helps create dangerous scoring opportunities for us in the attacking third of the field,” Basalyga said. Sophomore Ashley Ryan, who scored two goals as a midfielder last season, and freshman Merrissa Vault, a speedy, athletic player out of Boca Raton Community High School in Boca Raton, Fla., could also see time on the outside this season. Sophomore Emily D’Italia will likely reprise her role at one of the center back positions this fall. D’Italia transferred to EKU from Robert Morris and started 16 games for the Colonels last season, providing a solid and physical presence in the back. The lone question mark on defense is the remaining center back position. Who will replace Stephanie Murray, a mainstay on the Colonel backline the last four years? Basalyga said that spot could go to either senior Hayley Wright, a hard-nosed veteran who has started 27 games in her Colonel career, or freshman Taylor Perkins, a newcomer out of Elizabethtown High School in Elizabethtown, Ky. who, according to Basalyga, “has good pace and good size, and is also good on distribution.”

Donnelly enters the season just four goals shy of breaking the all-time EKU goals record, and she will lead the EKU attack from her outside forward position. Joining her on the outside will be sophomore Kaylynn Brown, who led the team with 18 shots on goal last season, and a pair of freshmen, Dani Cant, out of St. Francis High School in Calgary, Alberta, and Amani Thomas, out of Pickerington High School in Pickerington, Ontario. Basalyga said that Cant and Thomas are “good players on the ball who possess a lot of speed, which will hopefully make us more of an attacking threat this fall.” Sophomore Devon Saini, EKU’s top goal scorer from a season ago, will start at the high forward position. Saini paced the Colonels with four goals last fall, including two game-winners, and will look build on those torrid numbers this season. She will be joined at the high forward position by senior Katie Collar and junior Janelle Coates, both of whom Basalyga noted were “good with their backs to pressure.” A wildcard on the front line could be sophomore Whitney Wallace, who only saw action in three games last season but who Basalyga called “by far the most improved player on the team.” Wallace is an extremely versatile player who can play anywhere on the field, “but I think her home will be somewhere on the frontline this season,” Basalyga noted. Junior Courtney Klaas and freshman Mallory Dunn would also compete for time at the forward position, but both are redshirting this season.

Midfielders Tennon played in the attack as a freshman, moved to the backline as a sophomore and junior and will now, possibly, round out her career by playing in the midfield as a senior. Basalyga said that the coaching staﬀ has dabbled with the speedy Tennon in the middle of the field this preseason, noting that “her ability to link up the defense with the attack could definitely be dangerous in the midfield.” Joining Tennon in the midfield will be a trio of skilled veterans, juniors Tess Akgunduz, Brittany Nomady and Kristan Paynter. Akgunduz saw action in all 20 of the Colonels’ games last season and Basalyga said that “she has good vision and strikes a great long ball.” Nomady, who already ranks third all-time in assists at EKU, scored the game-winner against Austin Peay last year and Basalyga called her “a nifty, creative center midfielder who has great vision on and oﬀ the ball.” Paynter started 17 games last fall and scored her first career game-winner against UNC Asheville. Basalyga noted that Paynter “has a great work ethic defensively and does a great job of playing to her strengths.” A pair of freshmen, Katie Bright and Mikala Ferguson, could also compete for playing in the middle. Bright, out of Nation Ford High School in Fort Mill, S.C., “has good size and is good in the air” and could sit back as a defensive-type midfielder, while Ferguson, Basalyga said, is “a savvy player that does a great job of linking up the defenders and the forwards.”

Head Coach Lindsay Basalyga thrived oﬀ the field. In 2010, Basalyga was bestowed with EKU’s prestigious Coaches Academic Enhancement Award for the second consecutive year, given annually to the coach who most honors their commitment to recruiting dedicated student -athletes and placing a high emphasis on academics within their program. Since she started the Colonel soccer program in 2005, Basalyga has coached three OVC Medal of Honor Winners, seven Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society inductees, over 30 Presidential Scholars and over 50 Colonel Scholars. The Basalyga-led Colonels were also awarded the coveted OVC Team Sportsmanship award for soccer from 2006-10, the first five years of the award’s existence “It is a huge honor to be recognized by OVC players and coaches with the Sportsmanship Award for five consecutive years,” Basalyga said. “I am certainly proud of how our players continue to represent themselves and the university in a competitive, yet professional, manner in and out of the conference.” Basalyga’s fresh, innovative take on coaching soccer extends to recruiting as well, where she looks for players who want to be a part of an exciting program on the rise. Because she is looking for a certain type of player, Basalyga allows current Colonels to be very involved in the recruiting process and voice their opinions about whether or not a prospective recruit would fit in the system. “It’s my job, as head coach, to project whether or not a player fits into our system on the field,” Basalyga said. “Once they arrive on campus, however, it’s the player’s job to close the deal.” Prior to EKU, Basalyga spent four years working with the University of Toledo women’s soccer team. Basalyga joined the Rockets’ staﬀ in 2001 as a graduate assistant and, two years later, was promoted to the top assistant position. While at Toledo, Basalyga aided in all aspects of the program, gaining experience in field coaching, implementing of practice plans and recruiting. The Rockets’ 2004 recruiting class was nationally recognized, ranking 14th in the Great Lakes Region. A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Basalyga was a standout soccer player at Turpin High School and then the University of Maryland, where she helped the Terrapins advance to the NCAA College Cup in four consecutive seasons. A three-year starter at Maryland, Basalyga tallied eight goals, nine assists and 25 points throughout her career. During her senior campaign, she set the school record for most goals (four) and most points (nine) in an NCAA Tournament. Basalyga is the daughter of John and Linda Basalyga, and she has two younger siblings, brother Ryan (30) and sister Courtney (28). She touts a proven pedigree, as her father, John, is beginning his 10th season as the men’s soccer coach at Northern Kentucky University, where he led the Norse to an NCAA Division II National Championship in 2010. Basalyga received her bachelor’s degree in art studio from Maryland in 2001 and later earned a master’s degree in recreation and leisure studies from Toledo.

Lindsay Basalyga Alma Mater: Maryland, 2001 After seven years of building the Eastern Kentucky University women’s soccer program from the ground up, Lindsay Basalyga enters her eighth season as head coach having firmly entrenched the Colonels into the upper echelon of the Ohio Valley Conference. Hired as the program’s inaugural head coach in 2005, Basalyga has led Eastern Kentucky soccer since its infancy. Following three years of a rocky assimilation into Division I soccer, the Colonels turned the corner in 2008 when Basalyga led the team to a 5-3 conference record and a No. 2 seed in their first-ever appearance in the OVC Tournament. EKU now enters 2012 having finished as conference runner-up two of the last four years and as one of only three teams to finish in the top-six in the regular season conference standings each of the last four years, a testament to the program’s consistent spot near the top of the OVC. The Colonels’ success over the last four seasons has been legitimized by weekly and postseason recognition. In just six years, Basalyga has coached 20 All-OVC performers, including senior defender Deja Tennon and junior defender Lauren Fant, who earned second team All-OVC honors in 2011, and sophomore defender Paige Larkin, who earned OVC All-Newcomer honors in 2011. All three were part of a formidable Colonel backline that did not allow multiple goals in any of EKU’s last 12 regular season games. That defense, combined with a young, opportunistic oﬀense (all of EKU’s 18 goals were scored by sophomores and freshmen in 2011) and a stellar recruiting class make it clear that the pieces are in place for EKU soccer to enjoy long term success, and expectations are on the rise heading into the 2012 campaign. “Even though we are entering our seventh season, we are still a very young program relative to the rest of the country,” Basalyga said. “Every season our expectations rise in terms of what we are asking of our athletes, both on and oﬀ the field. We have more depth than we have ever had in every position and there is a lot of pressure to perform in training on a consistent basis - this is how it’s supposed to be. There are a lot of players who should be playing and could be playing, but playing time will come down to who is willing to consistently put in the work on the defensive side of the ball, who is able to keep the ball, and who is going to give us the best chance to win soccer games.” On top of their on-field accolades, Basalyga’s teams at EKU have also

Chris Swift is in his first season as an assistant coach for the Eastern Kentucky University women’s soccer team. Swift joined the Colonels after spending the last three seasons as an assistant coach at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. “I am very excited to join the program here at Eastern Kentucky,” Swift said. “I want to thank Lindsay for the opportunity to be part of her staff and help the program move toward achieving the goal of winning the Ohio Valley Conference and qualifying for the NCAA Tournament.” Lamar improved all three years that Swift was a member of the coaching staff, culminating in 2011, when the Lady Cardinals enjoyed the most successful season in the five-year history of the program, setting school records for victories (eight) and conference victories (six) while earning the No. 3 seed in the Southland Conference Tournament. Six Lady Cardinals earned all-conference honors following the breakout season. A native of southern California, Swift used his connections in that area to recruit several key members of Lamar’s record-breaking 2011 team, including second team all-conference midfielder Kristin Bos and honorable mention all-conference defender Nicole Frank. Swift was also instrumental in Lamar’s high academic standards while he was there, resulting in two Lady Cardinals, Rachelle Berry and Jennifer Torry, being named second team Capital One Academic All-District in 2011. Aside from recruiting and academics, Swift was also in charge of training, video breakdown, camps and community service while at Lamar. Before arriving at Lamar, Swift was an assistant coach/goalkeepers coach at his alma mater, Vanguard University in Costa Mesa, Calif., from 2008-09. Swift played goalkeeper at Vanguard from 2002-06 and recorded 138 saves and four shutouts during his career. He earned his bachelor’s degree in history and political science from the school in 2006. Swift also possesses several years of club coaching experience, serving as an assistant coach for the Slammers Football Club from 2004-06, the United Futbol Club (where current Colonel Brittany Nomady played) from 2006-09 and as the goalkeepers coach for the Los Angeles Legends Football Club in 2009. “I am very happy to have Chris on staff with our program as we head into the 2012 season,” head coach Lindsay Basalyga said. “Chris has a tremendous amount of experience working with goalkeepers and his connections to southern California will certainly help keep our recruiting pipeline intact with that area of the country. I think Chris will do a great job complimenting my strengths and weaknesses as a coach and I’m looking forward to starting preseason with a fresh set of eyes and ideas.”

Adam Kleman is in his first season as an assistant coach for the Eastern Kentucky University women’s soccer program. Kleman will assist with on-field coaching and off-campus recruiting and will be in charge of such administrative tasks as team travel arrangements, video editing, etc. “I’m really excited to have Adam on staff with us this year,” head coach Lindsay Basalyga said. “He is extremely motivated to get involved in coaching at the college level and has the personality and work rate we need to keep our program moving in a positive direction. Adam will be able to draw on his experiences as a player at Transylvania and work experience for the past few years at Central Baptist Hospital as an operations manager to assist with all areas of the program both on and off the field.” A native of Lima, Ohio, Kleman brings valuable coaching experience with him to EKU, as he served as the head coach of the Elida Soccer Association U-12 boys team in 2008 and 2010. Prior to that, he played college soccer at Transylvania University in Lexington, Ky. from 2004-07, where he experience great success. During his four-year stint at Transylvania, the Pioneers went 46-10-13, won the Heartland Conference Tournament four times, qualified for the NCAA Tournament four times and advanced to the Sweet 16 his senior year.
