The living space people inhabit reflects their value. Moving into a home after home has influenced me, giving me perspective to see just how influential an architect can be. More than anything, I want to be an architect who cares about people because careful design can have individuals feeling acknowledged and accepted. My interests and my passion are what continuously drive me every day to continue to work throughout my career.

Hoag Abstract Garden Hostel Type: Therapeutic dwelling for cancer patients Site: Located adjacent to Hoag Hospital at Newport beach, CA,

7

8 |SITE ANALYSIS

GOAL As part of the hospital campus, the goal of this project is to create an abstract dwelling, and to design a therapeutic and healing dwelling space for cancer patients, and for families and friends visiting the patients.

ANALYSIS The form of the buildings at the adjacent Hoag hospital campus reflects a timeline of abstract architecture. Cancer Center is an aggregation of different geometric volumes (cylinder, triangle, box) where each mass is treated as separate volumes. Technology Pavilion is still an aggregation of volumes that are treated as separate, but it has more uniform language in terms of massing. The Child Care Center begins to shift masses in angle and merge volumes as one object. This project joins the timeline by proposing a new generation of abstraction that uses uniform language in terms of massing, but allowing more flexibility to interrupt different masses.

d. Cogen Plant

CONCEPT| 9

CONCEPT The intersecting 3 strokes in different line weights turn into 3 dimensional organic form that wraps around the site, facing water. This then falls on top of the steep topography. Each stroke becomes a mass for dwelling units. The roof is treated as one object, which is interrupted and broken down into smaller masses by different iterations of strokes that create ample therapeutic garden areas and space for outdoor activities.

c. Child Care Center

b. Advanced Technology Pavilion

a. Cancer Center

10 |SECTION

CONTRAST Unlike the exterior that shares a uniform language of the organic curves, grid-lines of the adjacent cogen plant are used to break down the dwelling units. This allows a totally different form of geometry to reveal as it transitions from its exterior to the interior dwelling space. The weird-shaped spaces at the corner are an outcome of the intersection of two different geometries.

CONCEPT By Repetition, Stacking, and Rotation of triangular form of the given site, balance of outdoor and indoor space for various programs is created. “The triangle”, as formal language, is emphasized throughout plans, facade, and circulation. Another concept of the project is an exploration of three different types of spaces: A. private space with concrete wall, B. space with transparent perforated screen, and C. space completely open to air. Each space serves differently according to varied programs.

The Intersection Type: Urban Institute with a conjunction of varied programs Site: located at the intersection of 3rd street and Bryant street in San Francisco, CA

21

The site is located at the intersection of two busy streets of San Francisco. Getting the initial inspiration from the shift in street grid of the site, the project brings “the intersection” into the building. On each floor, the intersecting paths serve as main circulation as they shift in angles. Space for varied programs on each floor is shaped accordingly following the path.

Interconnected Island Type: Shared living home for young adults who love to interact, socialize, and party. Site: Crockett, CA

27

28 |SITE ANALYSIS

SITE PLAN| 29

NOODLES The project’s inspiration came from observation of the interconnected street network in Crockett, and the noodle-like form of it. Interpreting Crockett as an island town of noodle streets, with few connections to the neighboring towns, insular, protected, obscured by the hills, blocked by big highways, inaccessible along the water, the design mainly focuses on creating more connection on the site. The main idea of this project is to create “connection” with the noodle-like street form of Crockett, and to create interconnected island dwellings by analyzing and reorganizing the street geometry onto the site by the railroad adjacent to C&H sugar factory. At site scale, the three separate island dwelling volumes are connected by noodle paths and landscape that extends out to the waterfront.

30 |BUILDING FORM

CONCEPT Flexibility is one essential idea of the project. It is about how dwelling can be flexible and noodle-like, while still providing privacy and having island-like quality. The dwelling is designed to create social connection and an active environment among young adults who love to party and socially engage with different people.

DWELLING CONCEPT| 31

DWELLING At building scale, open-to-below double height spaces create interaction between different floors. The noodle stairs lead to open space below, and the noodle circulation extends out to exterior noodle paths. At dwelling scale, flexible felt fabric walls connect the living space inside and outside each unit, while the elevational change of private spaces within the unit allows privacy and makes flexible island dwellings.

36 |TABLE DESIGN

The “ ㅈ “ Concept: Simple, Practical, Symbolic Material: Basswood Type of Joinery: Mortise and Tenon with Dowels

TABLE DESIGN| 37

Getting the initial inspiration from a Korean alphabet “ ㅈ ”, the three diagonal intersecting planes are used to create a cantilever. The simple but practical shape, combined with the joinery, gave the opportunity to come up with a stable form. The portable table can be easily disassembled for travel. By making one plane penetrate through another, it created spaces that could be used as a bookshelf, and a phone bracket.
