I am very sure that many of you will know what I am talking about when I name the BEAR CARNIVAL. FETISH PRIDE AND SUMMER FIESTA. Some of the many great events that the businessman, Phil Brocklehurst, has organized and carried out with great success.

Phil Brocklehurst, was born in Castleford. England in 1957. From a very young age he was a prodigy musical star, a pianist who won national competitions since he was only 6 years old. And he was a major contributor to the traveling theatre industry in the North of England. As a young adult, Phil moved into business administration. Phil’s business grew as the gay scene in the North of England and Scotland grew too, achieving success with businesses such as: bars, agencies, clubs….

Phil has the knack of spotting talented people and business opportunities filling spots capitalizing on massive impact with companies, seeing his popularity and profits increase.

After being diagnosed with cancer and diabetes, Phils day-to-day life had to stop immediately. After a year or so Phil defeated cancer and decided to return to his passion: BUSINESS. Helping friends with companies that were struggling in the economic crisis, through mentoring and advice.

In 2012, Phil decided to come to the Canary Islands, staying to date in the South of the Island. Phil took control of 3 bankrupt businesses, with his thoughtful approach he stripped them down and rebuilt them.

Phil did a study of why so many years of fatality in the South of the Island: travel companies closing down, tourists looking for bargain holidays elsewhere… Analyzing the impact of local advertising, he discovered that most tourists had made the decisions about where to visit before they arrive.

So he decided to promote his businesses, to catch them before they travelled.

BORN: Igon Canaries S.L. That would form part of a small business chain in the South of Gran Canaria: BUNKER. BASEMENT STUDIOS and KIKI BAR. It was clear to Phil that interest in the gay tourism sector in the south had to be revived. He created the Events and media part of Igon Canaries S.L. Starting strong, slowly and quietly, he made a switch from Island advertising to pre-holiday advertising.

With the support of the Tourist Board, they convinced the UK’s leading gay magazine, who have over a million readers/followers internationally. They wanted a prototype of FUTURE ADVERTISING.

IT WAS ALL A GREAT SUCCESS!!!

The main advertisements and articles with Gay Times and Boys in the UK and Schwulissimo in Germany revived interest in the gay tourism sector on our Island.

Phil has always tried to encourage as many companies as possible to work together for the good of the Island. He continues to produce Maspalomas Fetish Pride (now the 3rd largest event of its kind in Europe) and together with David Lobo produces Bear Carnival again a community event self funded. His community-led approach to business is what has earned him success and popularity in the south. Phil decided to promote the Yumbo Centrum Shopping Center, as the number one holiday destination for the LGBTQ community around the world. He encouraged companies to work together which made advertising cost become lower. This is how Igon Canaries Events has a significant presence in the South of Gran Canaria and they have a growing majority of the LGBTQ community working together for shared promotion

Phil is an extraordinary man, an empathetic person who always does everything from the heart. How to feed 500 people daily, because they do not have help or financial resouces. He has no intention of retiring as he believes he still has much to do and offer the Yumbo Centrum

We need more people like him. May everything he has achieved in the past 11 year in the south of the Island not fade away, as it would create a massive impact on the whole Yumbo and the many bars and businesses who now rely on the additional income his events bring to the Island.
