Welcome! During this Boat Show weekend we hope you feel the joy of the River, the People, the Place and, of course, the Boats! The ABM Staff Team and Board of Trustees thank YOU for being part of this year’s 58th Annual Show & Auction. Whether you are a Boat Show Exhibitor, Visitor, Vendor, Volunteer, Museum Member or Friend, YOU are an important part of the oldest continuously operating boat show in the country! During this Boat Show weekend we hope you feel the joy of the River, the People, the Place and, of course the Boats! While we may not be 100% back to “like it used to be,” we are well on our way to getting back on course. After this long stretch in pandemic status, we hope you will celebrate with us the joy of old boats and old friends. This annual show is much like a reunion and it’s best experienced by swapping stories and reminisces. We’ve made great strides this year by building a strong Staff Team to provide better exhibits, more on-the-water experiences, and expert care for our very large collection of boats, motors, and archives. That team is dedicating their efforts to make the ABM visitor experience extraordinary.

With an outstanding campus on the edge of a mighty river, this Museum can offer an authentic experience unlike any other. ABM is a great museum where people may come together and share their passion for recreational boating and its history! Be well and happy boating!

Owner: Michael Cregg

PRESERVED CLASSIC RACER

Engine: 1949 Chrysler Hemi Dual V-8s 700 HP

Miss Comet is a very unique and special performance runabout. She was designed by Naval Architect Monty O'Shea and built in Michigan between 1945-1949. She is built entirely of her original laminated Honduras mahogany. The unique bottom design features 2 planingsteps and a forward rudder for directional control at speed. Power comes from a pair of 350hp Chrysler Hemi engines equipped with 4 2-barrel carburetors each. In its early days, the boat was reported to reach speeds between 80mph and 100mph! Miss Comet has a wellpublicized history. She was the featured boat in issue 97 of Classic Boating Magazine, as well as being featured in Bob Speltz’s Real Runabouts series. Miss Comet is a multiple award winner. She now resides in her new home in Alexandria Bay, NY.

Classification Basics Preserved or Restored? Owner: For a wooden boat to be considered “Preserved” it must retain at least 60% of the original deck and topsides material and be constructed using the same methods and materials as the original. Owner’s categorization will be accepted unless the judges find cause to determine otherwise, in which case the Chief Judge’s determination will be final.

Classification Historic - Built prior to 1919 Engine:

Antique - Built 1919 – 1942 Classic - Built 1943 – 1975 Late Classic - Built after 1975. In 2022 the Late Classic period ends in 1997 Contemporary - A wooden boat built in the last 25 years.

Black Beauty

#7

1947 19' 6" Gar Wood “706”

1947

Owner: Marty & Cathy Gardner

RESTORED

According to the history recorded by her previous owner, Chris Johnson, she was first purchased at the New York Boat Show in 1947 and was the only all black runabout among the 84 of this model built by Gar Wood. Chris arranged to have her restored and much of her original framework, dashboard and interior work were retained. Seeking the beauty of a classic wooden boat and a reliable boat to enjoy with friends and family, we had her repowered with a new engine. We retained the Chrysler Crown 6 to keep the option of pairing the boat and engine together in the future.

Engine:

Michael Claudon

1951 Gray Marine Phantom Six-112 6 cyl 112 HP

This Penn Yan Traveler-President, HIN WR5167, is a “stern-engine-drive” inboard utility, powered by her original, just-rebuilt twin carb Gray Marine Phantom Six-112. Her distinctive “Star Buzz Martin” burgee confirms that she was sold to her first owners by Buzz Martin at Martin Marine in Painted Post, NY. At one point he was the largest retailer of Penn Yan boats serving the Finger Lakes region. Snake Mountain Boatworks completed her comprehensive preservation last winter, saving well over 95% of her original wood. All of her hardware, lighting, and driveline are original as well. Only her distinctive, Penn-Yancorrect, Chinese-red upholstery was replaced. Her original Chinese red theme is carried throughout the bilge and below the waterline.

Jane Valerie is Hull #50 out of 291 Model 100s built. More than 85 years after she was built in Algonac, MI, the Model 100 is considered quite rare in the world of antique boats. The Model 100 was offered just two years, 1930-31, at the onset of the Great Depression. The shortest triple cockpit built by Chris Craft, the Model 100 was a testament to the ingenuity of the engineers who were able to pack so much into a 20' boat. The Jane Valerie was restored to her former glory by John & Kim Kadimik. Woody Boater photo

1929 46' Elco Flat Top

1929 RESTORED ANTIQUE CRUISER

Owner: Doug Reicher

Engine: Twin 1980 Perkins Diesel 6.354 6 cyl 130 HP

Spindrift II was built for Judge Harold R. Medina who owned her for close to 40 years. She is believed to be the only 46’ twin screw ever built by Elco. Spindrift II has been the subject of several spectacular mishaps. In the 1938 hurricane, she was carried to the twelfth green of the Westhampton Country Club. In 1950, as the result of a light failure at the entrance to Nantucket Harbor, she ran onto a submerged jetty and sank. In 1961, while at anchor in Moriches Bay, she was struck by a runabout, lost three feet of her bow, and sank. During winter 1980 while in storage, the shed collapsed due to snow load, destroying the after-canopy, and crushing the air horn on the deckhouse roof. Despite all her mishaps, both the interior and exterior of Spindrift II are substantially unchanged. She is truly a well-preserved piece of history.

Riptide IV

# 21

1948 25’ Chris Craft Sportsman Owner:

Jane & Kevin Heffron

Engine:

Chris Craft W 6 cyl 175 HP

Riptide IV is the fourth Riptide boat in my family. The fleet began with a wonderful family cruiser kept at Van’s in the Bay and on which my parents discovered the 1000 Islands. Later, when my parents bought a house on Wellesley Island, the cruiser was traded for the first Chris-Craft runabout. Riptide IV was originally delivered from Chris-Craft to George W. Mercier Inc in Clayton in January 1948 and sold to her first owner. Kevin and I had her refinished, the brightwork done and new leather after we were married and took ownership. She is a wonderful family boat, able to carry a number of people. Kids are protected by the high sides and people can move around when safe because of the open utility layout. She still has her original lined bait well, original engine and other original features. She is a beautiful boat.

My childhood summers were spent in Marshfield, Massachusetts. Just a few miles from where the Boston Whalers were being built. Each summer as I navigated the South River I would wish for my own Whaler. In 2017 I found a diamond in the rough. I was determined to turn it into the boat I wished for as a young boy. After 10 months the project was completed with its maiden voyage in New Jersey. She was born March 28, 1967.

Pullman

# 24

1950 26' Hutchinson Utility

1950 RESTORED CLASSIC UTILITY

Owner: Andrew Robb

Engine: 1980 Chrysler M360 8 cyl 330 HP

Pullman was designed and built by Hutchinson's Boatworks in Alexandria Bay for George Pullman, of the Pullman Palace Rail Car legacy, who owned Pullman Island in the 1000 Islands' legendary Millionaire's Row. The Calabrese Family purchased Pullman Island in the early 1970s and required a boat to transfer people and goods back and forth from the mainland. They found the perfect boat, a 1950 Hutchinson 26' Utility and named her Pullman. She was used lovingly for decades. Rich Calabrese Jr. has fond childhood memories riding the River in Pullman with his father. North Country Boatworks acquired Pullman in 2017. She remains in preserved condition, with mostly original interior, decks, sides and bottom. She has been repowered with a 1980 Chrysler V8. We are proud to be caretakers of a piece of 1000 Islands legacy!

Gar Wood Custom Boats located in Brant Lake, NY is a closely held family owned and operated corporation that specializes in the construction and restoration of the legendary Gar Wood Boats. Founded in 1969, today the Turcotte Brothers continue to build Gar Woods on a limited basis as building a quality wooden boat with such a prestigious name as Gar Wood cannot be rushed. The Turcottes have altered the size of their operation to enable them to focus on their goal, which is aptly stated in the 1937 Gar Wood brochure “while Gar Wood runabouts and utilities are standardized, in the sense that they are built to uniform model specifications, every one is built to and finished to custom standards of quality.”

Running Wild was commissioned by Martin Shaughnessy, an industrialist who summered in Cape Vincent. It is believed, but never actually confirmed, that Shaughnessy commissioned John L. Hacker to design a Liberty-powered triple cockpit runabout. Roy Stanley built the runabout Shaughnessy had commissioned. Running Wild possesses many characteristic Hacker styling features including her crowned decks, forward raised coaming, and original hardware. Her hull is constructed of batten seam mahogany planking fastened with copper rivets. Her Gar Wood V-12 Liberty engine puts her in the same performance class as E.J. Noble’s Baby Gar Snail. In fact, Running Wild and Snail traded trophies back and forth several times.

# 53

1935 28' Gar Wood Runabout Owner:

Lee Anderson

Engine:

1918 Curtiss D-12 12 cyl 375 HP

Griffin was built at the Marysville, MI ultra-modern factory in 1935 and is truly a one-of-akind custom runabout. Gar Wood gave final approval for every new design and any departure from existing designs. Griffin is the only single-step Gar Wood runabout from the mid-1930s known to exist. She was seen in Marine City, MI in 1975 needing some care. In the 1990s, Griffin was owned by Thomas Ryan of Flint, MI. In 2001, Tom Mittler of Three Rivers, MI purchased Griffin and began restoring her. We purchased her in 2014 and continued the efforts to restore this beautiful and unique runabout. A Curtiss D-12 was acquired as her powerplant from Island Street Boatyard of North Tonawanda, NY. The Curtiss D-12 was considered America’s best water-cooled engine from 1921-1928. Only a few are still in existence. This Curtiss D-12 aeronautic engine was converted for marine use by Capitol Marine of St. Paul, MN. In 2021, the decades' long attempts to restore Griffin was completed with great effort by Steve Lively of Anderson Classic Boats, and Dave Bortner of Freedom Boat Service.

# 54

1928 36' Graham Bell Labs Limousine Launch Owner:

Lee Anderson

Engine:

1916 Sterling Petrel 200 8 cyl 200 HP

Tolka was lost to history until she was serendipitously rediscovered by Bev McMullen tripping over the boat’s stem while snowshoeing on the Wallace Marine property in February 2003. A little digging in the deep snow revealed two clues to her identity: faded blue paint on the hull and a single letter O remaining on the bow. In the spring the hidden boat was revealed to be an enormous launch. McMullen obtained the boat from the co-owner of the property and worked with Peter Breen to remove it from the property. Originally told there was an old Minett in the woods, Breen quickly ruled that out as the boat had the wrong kind of cutwater. Preliminary research indicated that it had been built in the 1920s, but it was all wrong for a Muskoka boat of that era. The control system was also mysterious. Breen had only seen fore and aft cockpit control systems once before on a 1939 Greavette launch. Meanwhile, McMullen’s research led her to the Lash family who frequently cottaged at Lake

Rosseau’s Lash Point. Two of the Lashs’ boats ended up at Wallace Marine. Both boats were 32' Owner: Engine: long, built in the 1920s, and had an O in their names. One was a Minett and thus not the boat McMullen had found. The other, named Tolka, was a perfect match - the clincher being the color of the hull. Tolka had been painted a deep blue. After comparing the boat to photos and home video provided by the Lash family showing Tolka, Breen confirmed that the two were the same boat. The Lash family ran Tolka until the 1950s when she was sold to Mortimer Marine on Lake Muskoka for use as a work boat. After two years, she ran into trouble near Wallace Marine, was pulled up onto shore, stripped of useable parts and left in the woods. According to Tony Lash, Tolka was built in the early 1920s for his grandparents John Frances Lash and Grace Baldwin Lash. The blue paint was at Grace’s request – blue was her favorite color. The builder was Grace’s brother, Casey Baldwin, and the boat was built at Beinn Bhreigh, the Nova Scotia workshop of Alexander Graham Bell. Casey Baldwin managed Bell’s labs and would serve as executor of Alexander Bell’s estate and inherit the mansion and labs at Benn Bhreigh. When Bell and Baldwin set up a company to find commercial and military applications for hydrofoils, they hired John Lash to serve as president. During this time, Lash commissioned a new boat for his family’s Muskoka cottage. Bell employed at least 40 Cape Breton craftsmen in his labs and when they weren’t working on experimental boats or planes, the workers were kept busy on other projects, in particular boats including fishing dories, ocean-going yachts, and luxurious launches like Tolka. While much of the mystery around Tolka has been uncovered, questions remain including why the River Tolka was significant enough to the Lash family for their boat to bear its name.

# 67

Owner: Elaina Pirro & John Lombardi Engine: 1969 Chris Craft 327 8 cyl 210 HP This boat (eventually known as the XK 19' after 1970) was manufactured through 1975. Only 101 hulls were built in 1969 and this is hull #40 which was delivered to Shark River Hills Marina in Neptune, NJ. The current owners acquired the boat in 2001 after making several wrong turns before the husband of the party admitted to being lost. They came upon this boat painted cherry red with a large gold stripe and the exhausts coming off the engine facing the wrong direction. To make up for getting the couple lost, the husband let his wife purchase the boat. This particular model of boat was a staple in the covered boat shed at Bonnie Castle Marina in the late 1970s. The wife and her brother would see the boats and wish they had owned one. The boat was restored over several years and many parts needed to be located to bring it back to its original state. This boat is a joy to drive and the exhaust sound is music to the owners’ ears!

Shady Lady is a rare survivor from the 1930s. She was delivered from Algonac, MI with an optional glass and wood enclosure at the additional cost of $90, as listed on her hull card. Few boats equipped with this enclosure have survived. She spent her early years in Michigan waters and is thought to have been used as a “Rum Runner” during Prohibition. During restoration, a bullet was found in her engine compartment. This, plus her possible illegal activities when she was young, led to her being named Shady Lady. This naughty girl is cute and a real head-turner.

Exhibits 2022 Beneath the Surface:

The Maritime Artwork of Roland Stevens Roland "Chip" Stevens is a retired architect and artist from the Rochester area who has been team artist with a group calling itself "The Old Shipwreck Hunters" for years. The group plays an integral part in documenting the history of shipwrecks in Lake Ontario and also includes Jim Kennard and Dan Scoville.

Using side sonar scanning data and remote underwater vehicle footage, Chip is able to create artistic images of the wrecks resting below the water as well as how they would have looked before sinking. The exhibit also features video footage and historical information relating to the shipwrecks as well as a look inside Mr. Stevens' artistic process.

The Historically Inspired Designs of Slipstream Watercraft Slipstream Watercraft is a modern canoe and kayak manufacturer with an extraordinary appreciation for classically elegant paddling designs. Slipstream Watercraft started as a retirement project meant to generate a little extra income intended to offset the high cost of diesel fuel for the founders' recreational vehicle. Their decision to build the famous John Henry Rushton designed Wee Lassie was the impeccable choice — small enough to be produced in a garage and extremely popular in the world of canoeing.

Arty Johnson hand laminates the first layer of a Wee Lassie.

What started as “just one boat every couple of weeks to offset diesel costs” grew into a brand well known throughout North America. Everyone at Slipstream considers it a privilege to be boatbuilders of J.H. Rushton designs and it shows. Paddlers regularly travel hundreds and frequently thousands of miles to get a Rushton design produced by Slipstream. The Museum's exhibit features several Slipstream small craft alongside the historic vessels that inspired them from the Museum's collection. In addition, information on the Slipstream building process and other materials will give the visitor an inside look at the Slipstream Watercraft story.

Miss Thousand Islands III 30' Hacker Triple Cockpit Runabout

Powered by: Mercury 8.1L 385 HP Owner: Antique Boat Museum

In the early 1980s Morgan Marine on Lake George purchased the rights to the legendary Hacker name and began building new boats from original designs. The Hacker Boat Company carries on with this tradition at their shop in upstate New York. Hacker Craft is one of the most recognizable names amongst wooden boats today and it is the Museum’s pleasure to provide visitors to the Museum the experience of the joy and excitement of a speedboat ride every season on Miss Thousand Islands III and the preceding Miss Thousands Islands and Miss Thousand Islands II through the Ride the River program.

Flat Top 1955 RESTORED CLASSIC CRUISER

30' Chris-Craft Semi-Enclosed Cruiser

Powered by: Twin Chris Craft M 6 cyl Donor: Alan Jackson

The Chris-Craft Semi-Enclosed Cruiser models from the 1950s offered passengers a boat that was roomy, fast, and well-suited for a full day on the water. Flat Top was owned by country music star Alan Jackson who chose the name as a reference to the flat top steel-string acoustic guitars he commonly uses. Flat Top is one of just 36 of these boats ever built by Chris-Craft. The boat was used and stored on Lake Chautauqua, in western New York, by its original owner. In 2002, Jackson purchased the boat in poor condition and transported it to Tennessee to undergo extensive restoration work at Hickman Wooden Boat Works in Woodbury. Under the craftsmanship of Travis Hickman, Flat Top was revived through a nearly 3-year restoration project, leaving no details untouched. Flat Top now features pristine woodwork and artistry, both interior and exterior, while retaining its original look and is a handsome addition to the collection of the Antique Boat Museum.

Zipper 1974 RESTORED CLASSIC COMMUTER

42' Staudacher Yacht Company Commuter Yacht

Powered by: Twin Crusader V-8s 8 cyl 255 HP Donor: Louise S. Stroh

Zipper was designed for the Purdy Boat Company. Though designed in the 1930s, the boat was never built. In 1974, brewery magnate John W. Stroh finally commissioned Staudacher Yachts to build her. While remaining faithful to the original design, Staudacher utilized modern construction methods and gave Zipper a strong, “screwed and glued” double-planked hull with vertically-scarfed mahogany planking on steam-bent oak frames. Zipper is a commuter yacht, emblematic of a type from the 1920-30s.

Pardon Me 48' Hutchinson Boat Works Custom Runabout

Powered by: Packard V-12 Marine Engine Donors: Jim & Tony Lewis

Pardon Me is one of the most memorable runabouts ever built. Commissioned by Charles P. Lyon of Chippewa Bay in the 1000 Islands, she was designed by Hacker and built by the Hutchinson Boat Works of Alexandria Bay, NY. Work began on Pardon Me before the design was actually completed. After more than 30 years away from the St. Lawrence River, Pardon Me returned in 1983 to ABM’s Annual Antique Boat Show and became a part of the Museum’s collection in 1986 thanks to the generosity of Jim & Tony Lewis.

1948 RESTORED CLASSIC RUNABOUT

Gadfly 33' Hutchinson Boat Works Sedan Commuter

Powered by: Pleasure Craft V8 8 cyl Donor: Margaret H. Wallace

Built in Alexandria Bay by Hutchinson Boat Works, Gadfly spent her early years in the 1000 Islands before being moved to Michigan. This sedan commuter returned to the River in 1994 when she was donated to the Museum. As part of the Museum’s In-Water Fleet she has provided hundreds of Museum patrons with the opportunity to enjoy traveling on the River in the secure comfort that is the embodiment of her style. Her large planing hull seems to disguise the cruising speed that swiftly propels this grand boat to her destination. Ian Coristine photo

Elektra 2011

22' Aaron Turner Electric Skiff Putt

Powered by: Elco electric motor Funding provided by: Bill Kaiser

CONTEMPORARY

SKIFF PUTT

Elektra was built by Aaron Turner at the Antique Boat Museum through funds provided by Bill Kaiser. Elekra is modeled after the 1911 L.E. Fry skiff putt Addie in the Museum’s collection. The “skiff putt” is a natural evolution from the rowing skiff that came with the availability of small inboard engines. Early skiff putts were designed more or less the same way that traditional skiffs had been, double-ended with almost the same profile and proportions, scaled up for the motor. Through 2013-2014, a team of volunteers installed the current Elco electric motor.

31.5' L.E. Fry Light Speed Launch

Powered by: Volvo 100 HP Donor: Robert Cox

Suwanee is a custom-built "light speed launch" built by L.E. Fry and Co. in 1909 for W.H. Owen of Utica, NY. The contract for her construction specified the design to be created by L.E. Fry & Co., with her length to be just within the A.P.B.A. 32-foot class limit. Mr. Owen, a summer resident of Thousand Island Park on Wellesley Island used Suwanee to pick up groceries in Clayton when he wasn't racing her. After Mr. Owen died in 1955, Suwanee was purchased by Bob Cox, who enjoyed her on the River and in Florida for many years before donating her to the Museum in 1996.

Wild Goose 40' Hutchinson Boat Works Launch

Powered by: Chrysler V8 Donor: Cleveland E. Dodge & Joan Dodge Rueckert

If Wild Goose has a familiar silhouette, it may be because she has been an ambassador for the Antique Boat Museum as the boat in the ABM logo for over 30 years. She was built by the Hutchinson Brothers boatyard in Alexandria Bay, NY in 1915 as a high-speed launch for island commuting. Her original owner, Frederick Lovejoy, named her Onondaga III and used her to ferry passengers to and from his home in Westminster Park on Wellesley Island. In 1928 the boat was purchased by Cleveland E. Dodge of Grindstone Island and Wild Goose Island and renamed Wild Goose. For over seventy years she served as a family launch for the Dodge family, who loved and carefully maintained the boat throughout its life.

River Cat Purr'r On Display in the ABM Lobby In keeping with the 58th Annual Antique Boat Show's featured marque, a very special Chris Craft is being featured in the lobby of the Elizabeth and Bolling Haxall Building throughout the season. Purr’r is a beautiful 1938 17' Chris Craft Deluxe utility with an original Chris Craft B 60 HP engine and a well documented history. Purr’r was shipped from Algonac, Michigan in July of 1938 to Clayton and purchased by the Merrick Family of Murray Island. Each of the Merricks' boats were named in relation to their pet cats. Purr’r originally had a painting of the cat it was named after on the transom. Because Mrs. Merrick enjoyed fishing, she had oar locks with ten-foot oars installed in the 1940s. In 1963, Purr’r was sold to David Dickinson, a dentist from Syracuse, New York, whose family also owned a cottage on the St. Lawrence River. David brought Purr’r to his newly acquired camp on Skaneateles Lake, New York in 1964 and enjoyed the boat for several years, trading her for a new Chris Craft at a local marina in 1967. Don Torrey, a career diplomat, purchased Purr’r for his family cottage at Borodino Landing on Skaneateles Lake. Don found that Purr’r was not well suited to pulling his teenage son while water skiing and purchased a larger Century. His neighbor, Ed Ryan bought Purr’r for $350 dollars and used the boat every summer until 1990 when the boat almost sank.

ABM's 2022 Lobby Boat Purr'r after restoration.

In 1992, longtime ABM trustee Donald Babcock purchased Purr’r and brought the boat to Woodbury, Tennessee for Travis Hickman of Hickman Wooden Boat Works to conduct a complete restoration. Hickman's restoration included a full bottom replacement, re-chroming, and completely rebuilding the original engine. Since her restoration, Purr-r has won many awards, including Best of Class for Utility under 22' at the ABM Boat Show. In 2005 Donald and Eleanor Babcock donated Purr’r to the ABM where she continues to be a crowd favorite and a stunning example of a Chris Craft Deluxe Utility.

Marion Clayton Link Archives' State-of-the-Art Digitization Laboratory

Project Archivist Emily Nichols working in the Digitization Laboratory..

Since the start of the pandemic and the many changes that have resulted from it, several issues have come to the forefront for museums and archives. One of these is the now massive demand for virtual content and digital access to historical resources. The Antique Boat Museum is currently working through a small-scale digitization plan and is thrilled to announce that, through the gift of a very generous museum benefactor and supporter, a state-of-the-art Digitization Laboratory by Digital Transitions Cultural Heritage is now part of the ABM tool kit. Located in the southeast corner of the Curatorial Studio, this system now allows museum staff to quickly

digitize both flat and three-dimensional objects. Large objects, such as some of the Scripps Technical Legacy Data documents that measure six feet by four feet, can now be digitally captured in minutes; a process that previously took days and involved hundreds of individual photographs that had to be stitched together. Equipment like the Digitization Laboratory is typically not found outside a large university setting and we are most fortunate to have it on-site. It allows us to share more archival material in response to research requests and preserve historical resources for generations to come.

The Scripps Collection is now available online through Past Perfect. If you click the button at left, it will take you to the Advanced Search page. Scroll down to the empty space below "Collection" and type in Scripps to search the Scripps Collection.

Bo Muller has been involved with wooden boats since riding in his grandfather’s GarWood in the early 60s, Mechanical Engineering degree in hand, Bo took a professional detour in 1982 to restore antique boats with his wife Kathy. Muller Boatworks has specialized in restoring and building antique mahogany runabouts and racing boats ever since. Bo has been involved with the ACBS and ABM for over 30 years. Dan Shaver has been around boats his entire life. Growing up and spending summers at his family’s cottage on the St. Lawrence River, Dan’s love for wood boats began at an early age. Until the late 1980s when his father purchased the first fiberglass boat in the family, their main source of transportation between the island property and mainland was a 1955 20' Chris-Craft Utility. This love of wooden boats has led to the purchase of several project boats over the years, keeping things very busy in the shop. Dan resides with his wife Julie and their boys Jacob and Matthew in Clayton, NY and are members of the Thousand Islands chapter of the ACBS. Mike Shaver has spent summers

on the St. Lawrence River his entire life. This started a lifelong affair with boats of all sizes, mostly wooden. He still owns two of the family classics from the mid 1950s. Skills learned from family friends and

professionals have allowed him to do a great portion of the maintenance and repairs on his several vessels. He lives in Oswego, NY and works as a mechanical technician at lnficon in East Syracuse, NY. He volunteers at the Minetto Fire Department, The H. Lee White Maritime Museum, the Antique Boat Museum and the Oswego Music Hall. He has recently started racing stock outboard boats with his son Dan and grandsons Jake & Matthew.

Scott Smith's interest in old boats

and motors runs deep as the son of the late marine historian and former Antique Boat Museum director, Riggs Smith. With interests ranging from collecting & repairing vintage outboard motors, model boat building, and occasionally racing in APBA's stock outboard division, to restoring his family's 1936 twin cockpit Phelps and Cornell runabout, he keeps himself busy with numerous projects year-round. Scott and his wife, Janel, live in Fishers Landing, NY with their sons Liam and Gavin.

Rod Taylor was first inspired to

collect and restore antique boats by visits to the Adirondack Museum and later, to the old Shipyard Museum here in Clayton. While restoring and exhibiting numerous antique canoes, Adirondack Guide Boats, and Trout Boats, he also owned a Lyman Runabout, a Hutchinson Sedan, and a 1911 Glass Cabin Gentleman’s launch. His judging career began in the late 1990s and has included shows at Clayton, Gravenhurst, Buffalo, and ACBS International shows at Coeur d’Alene and Skaneateles. He has also been chief judge at the Finger Lakes Chapter Show.

Rick Terry's passion for wooden

boats began as a teenager when he landed a summer job at a Marina where he was required to drive a 38’ Ditchburn daily as a cruise boat and water taxi, a job he would like to have back today! After graduating from engineering school, he married his sweetheart, Karen. Next came his second love, a 32’ Ditchburn from a bankrupt hotel. He invested with Ed Skinner when Ed purchased Duke Marine Services whose business was wood boat repair and restoration before they were recognized as antiques. It was Karen who pointed out a U22 for sale in the paper and a collection started. In retirement he built a 25’ boat designed by Mike Windsor and has restored the U22 with some professional supervision

85

and assistance. He entertains the ‘thought’ of reducing his modest collection. Rick is a Past President of ACBS Toronto and has served for 6 years on the ACBS International Board of Directors and as Chair of the Judging Committee.

Tom and Larry Turcotte

are the owners and operators of Gar Wood Custom Boats in Brant Lake, NY. They each have over 40 years of experience restoring antique boats and building new Gar Woods. They strive to create watercraft that are as thrilling to drive as they are to look at.

Wes Van Dine is from Canton,

CT and Tavares, FL. He is on the Board of Directors of the Southern New England Chapter and previously was a member of the International Judging Committee. He has been Chief Judge at the Antique Boat Museum show in Clayton, NY and the Southern New England, Finger Lakes, and Wine Country shows. He has also judged at Clayton, Southern New England, Wine Country, Niagara Frontier, Bay State Woodies, Sunnyland, Toronto, and ACBS International Shows. Wes has a broad knowledge of antique and classic boats as evidenced by his extensive collection.

John Vyverberg has spent summers, his entire life, at Keuka Lake where messing around with boats and motors were an integral part of his existence. He has been a Wine Country member since 1984 and has had a wooden Chris Craft in the water every year since 1988. He's judged boats at Clayton, the Niagara Chapter, the Finger Lakes Chapter, the Harvey’s Lake Chapter, and Wine Country including several years as chief judge. When asked how many boats he owns, he'll tell you" Too damn many!” David Wenn runs an independent restoration shop called Remember Wenn in Upper Jay, NY. David has been involved with wooden boats for at least 40 years and does this work from April to November. In the wintertime, David is a full time alpine ski coach. His expertise is wide ranging but he especially enjoys small craft mahogany runabouts, utilities and Lymans.
