EVALUATION Q3 By Erin Barber
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
POSSIBLE OUTCOMES After completing the opening title sequence, as a group we were required to think about which media institution might distribute our media product and why. We had already established before making our film that are audience is a mass audience therefore already our options had become quite clear. As SALTUS is a big-budget ‘Hollywood film we started looking at subsidiaries of big media conglomerates as well as looking at films with similar audiences in order to gain a better understanding of what media institution would distribute our media product.Â
WARNER BRO. PICTURES We started thinking about ‘The Big 6’ and how they are companies that distribute big budget films. We though that a distributer like Warner Brother Pictures would be an ideal distributer for our film / opening title sequence as they have a huge history in distributing big budget films. WARNER BROS. PICTURES INTERNATIONAL is a leader in the marketing and distribution of feature films to markets outside of North America, operating offices in more than 30 countries and releasing films in over 120 international territories, either directly to theatres or in conjunction with partner companies and co-ventures, therefore would be perfect for releasing a Big Budget film like SALTUS.
20th CENTURY FOX Another company that we considered was 20th CENTURY FOX. This is because, like WARNER BRO. PICTURES they are a leading media institution and know for distributing big budget movies. Â As SALTUS is a big budget film, it need to make a lot of profit therefore by using 20th CENTURY FOX, we thought that the studios recourse would be more than experienced when trying to reach audiences and turn over profits, as they are owned by New Corporation and would have a lot of contacts when it comes to marketing.
FILM PROMOTION Due to choosing to go with distributors that are subsidiaries to very big media conglomerates, this means that there are a lot of recourse and roads that SALTUS could utilise when it comes to promotion.Â
Advertising of this film would obviously include advertisements and trailers on TV and online. I emphasis online as most of our teen audience use the internet over watching television therefore we would favour marketing online as we think that we would have a better chance at reaching our audience. I have also made a mind map displaying other ways that we would reach our teen and family demographic.Â
FILM PROMOTION After researching films that have been distributed by these companies, I have discovered that perhaps Warner Bro. Pictures would be a better fit as they distribute a lot more films with the same genre and demographic that SALTUS has. For example they have distributed films like ‘Jupiter Ascending’ which is a Sci-Fi thriller with a teen demographic.
MY OWN COMPANIES Our group decided that It would be best to create our own production companies for the purpose of our OTS. We made a production company and a Studio/Distributer. We decided that these companies would rival companies like Warner Bro. and 20th Century Fox.
The first company we made was KLS PICTURE HOUSE PRODUCTIONS.
The second company we made was HAGE Studios.
I made a YouTube Video explaining about our productions companies, I will embed that on the blog post of this Evaluation Question.
CONCLUSION I believe that my film has got the potential to be distributed by a distribution company within ‘The Big 6’ leading media institutions. Our target audience is very broad in age, as we were main targeting families therefore the film would hopefully gail a lot on new viewers, as its a new movie.
If our film was to be promoted further we would make a website devoted to SALTUS. This would track analytics for the interest the website gets which would in turn see how much potential it has to succeed. For example the filmmakers of ‘RoboCop’ (2014) create a website called ‘OmniCorp’ based on the film and teased different robots from the film before its release, which tracked interest and demographic trends.
