2022 Alvaro L. Martins SCHOLARSHIP

The Alvaro L. Martins Scholarship was created in honor of The Executive Leadership Council’s first President and CEO and noted founding member. The Alvaro L. Martins Scholarship is open to ambitious undergraduate Black male students who are enrolled in one of the nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

Howard University

Dequane Nealy is majoring in Electrical Engineering with a minor in Computer Science at Howard University. In 2021, he became a Howard Legacy Ambassador for Michael B. Jordan’s Invesco QQQ Legacy Classic, a college basketball tournament that showcases men’s teams from Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Also, Dequane is a member of the Terminator Project, a student-led group that created a chess game in Python that is simulated by a robotic arm. In addition to his interest in robotics, Dequane enjoys public speaking on topics that include equity and inclusion in STEM education. In the future, he hopes to create greater opportunities for minority students in the STEM fields.

Kahron Campbell

Bowie State University

Kahron Campbell is majoring in Sport Management with a minor in Communications at Bowie State University. He participated in the CSCP Kappa League Mentoring Program and has served as a volunteer at Food & Friends and the Capital Area Food Bank. Kahron attends First Baptist Church of Glenarden. In the future, Kahron plans to become a Sports Agent.

Roderick Jackson is majoring in Business Administration at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. He is a member of Alpha Beta RDO, Incorporated. In the future, Roderick plans to design a clothing line and open several businesses.

Spelman College

Arheanna Williams is majoring in Political Science at Spelman College. Also, she is the Co-President of a nonprofit organization called The Sister’s Act. The organization provides a safe place for Black women to discuss depression and other mental health challenges. In the future, Arheanna hopes to continue to provide services in these areas and help women to appreciate the importance of community support and self care.

Jaleaha Coates

Hampton University

Jaleaha Coates is majoring in Strategic Communications at Hampton University. She is a member of the Hampton University Marching Force. In 2020, she joined Griot Works, a program that helps Black youth to learn the basics of photography. In the future, she plans to continue developing her skills in this field.

Jaquay Anderson is majoring in Education at Saint Joseph’s University. She hopes to complete her first book on the challenges that young women face in today’s society and how they can overcome them. As a first-generation college student, Jaquay believes that it is important to help others to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals. In the future, she plans to become a Life Coach.

Ahmad Williams is majoring in Business Management at Howard University. He has a variety of interests, including photography, fashion design and skateboarding. However, he is most passionate about art, whether it be painting or sketching. Also, Ahmad started his own clothing line called DEViURi. He serves as the Chief Operation Officer as well as the Lead Designer. In the future, Ahmad hopes to become a leader in the fashion industry and a change agent in society.

Alexandra Jenkins

Spelman College

Alexandra Jenkins is majoring in Economics at Spelman College. She is a member of the Ethel Waddell Githii Honors Program. Also, she serves as a mentor in the Spelman Protégé Program. Alexandra has always been interested in business, particularly how financial services impact various markets and people around the world. In the future, she hopes to continue to learn more about the financial industry.

Brice Gambrell is majoring in Sports Management at Hampton University. He has served as a mentor for Hampton Student Support Services. Also, he is a member of the Phi Epsilon Kappa Honors Fraternity. Currently, he works as a Student Manager for the Men’s Basketball team at Hampton. In the future, Brice plans to become a Sports Agent and work for the National Basketball Association.

Kayla Fisher

University of Rochester

Kayla Fisher is majoring in Psychology and African and African American Studies at the University of Rochester. She has received numerous scholarships from several organizations, including the Posse Foundation, the Earl Woods Scholars Program and the Ronald E. McNair Program. Also, Kayla works in the Social Cognitive Development Lab at the university, where she helps professors study children and their perceptions of race, socioeconomic status and stereotypes. In the future, Kayla hopes to continue her studies and research in these areas.

Tyra Green is majoring in Psychology at Spelman College. She serves as a Peer Assistant Leader and Fundraising Chair for the National Society of Leadership and Success. In addition to being a Bonner Scholar, Tyra completed internships at CARE USA and the US Chamber of Commerce. In the future, Tyra plans to create a nonprofit organization that focuses on programming for youth.

William Waters

Howard University

William Waters is majoring in Strategic Communications at Howard University. He has held internship positions in organizations that include the U.S. Congress, PricewaterhouseCoopers and Bryson Gillette. William is a member of the Speech and Debate Team at Howard. Also, he is a member of the Association of Black Journalists. In the future, William hopes to continue his studies and pursue other internship opportunities.

Donovin Miles Pickett Cooper is majoring in Finance with a minor in Leadership Studies at Hampton University. Currently, he is a member of the William R. Harvey Leadership Institute and the Hampton Campus Ministry. Also, he is a member of Springhill Missionary Baptist Church, where he is a Junior Deacon. Kyra helps high school students to navigate the college admissions process in order to create a competitive application portfolio. In the future, she wants to attend law school.

Michael Clark

Howard University

Michael Clark is majoring in Sport Administration at Howard University. He has volunteered at several nonprofit organizations, including the Daniel E. Rumph II Foundation and the Philadelphia Youth Basketball Program. Also, he has worked as a Camp Counselor for the Community YMCA of Eastern Delaware County and Legacy Youth Tennis and Education. In the future, Michael plans to attend law school and continue to inspire young athletes of color to excel and achieve their dreams.

In her time as an undergraduate, she has been a dedicated member of the Data Analytics Club and The Period Project. Next year, Alexis will join Citi as an Enterprise Operations and Technology Intern. Previously, she held an internship at Keller Williams Realty and an externship at PwC and Paragon One. In the future, Alexis plans to start a nonprofit organization that provides housing services for the homeless and those with low incomes.

D’Onna Webster

D’Onna Webster is majoring in Human Performance with a minor in Chemistry at Howard University. In 2020, she published her first book. Also, D’Onna has been involved in the PATCH Program and in the Pre-Health Club at Howard. Her community service activities include volunteering her time in organizations such as the National Honor Society, Key Club and Mu Alpha Theta. In the future, D’Onna plans to continue to write and promote healthcare in her community.

Isaiah Williams

Isaiah Williams is majoring in Business Administration with a minor in Finance at Hampton University. He intends to pursue a career as a Global Markets Analyst at Goldman Sachs. Isaiah has served as an intern with companies such as Lockheed Martin and PricewaterhouseCoopers. Currently, he serves as the President of the Financial Management Association. He is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated. Also, he is a member of the Hampton Athletic Marketing Team, where he has completed over 175 hours of community service. In the future, Isaiah plans to start a company that focuses on wealth management.

He has served as a Fellow at BLK Capital Management and Management Leadership for Tomorrow. In the future, Sean plans to consider careers in business as a Corporate Manager, Investment Banker or Consultant.

Also, Claudia has served as an intern at several companies, including Apple, Volvo Group, Meta and PCX. In 2021, she won third place in the Amazon Prime Video Case Study Competition. Jaida Headley is majoring in Marketing with a minor in Music Industry Studies at the University of Miami. Prior to enrolling in this institution, she attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison, where she served as the Lead Graphic Designer for the Black Student Union. Also, Jaida has served as the Community Involvement Intern at Direct Supply and Lead Marketing Assistant at MKExpanded, a leading marketing and events company. In the future, she hopes to become a Creative Marketing Director in the music industry and eventually own a record company.

Isaiah Thompson

Alabama A&M University

Isaiah Thompson is majoring in Environmental Engineering at Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University. His research interest is in environmental sustainability, which motivates him to become an Environmental Engineer. Eventually, Isaiah hopes to earn a doctorate and discover ways to effectively apply research. In the future, he wants to mitigate the effects of climate change, discover different ways to provide fresh water to disadvantaged communities and create more ways to store renewable energy.

Also, Ryan was selected to be part of the inaugural cohort of the Tennessee State University Freshman Institute, a program designed to improve the leadership skills of students. She has worked as a Project Engineer Intern at Power Construction in Chicago, Illinois. In the future, Ryan hopes to continue to use her background in Engineering to make her community better by promoting the use of sustainable materials.

Zaria Osimetha is majoring in Psychology at the University of Southern California. She has been inducted into the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society. Also, Zaria is a four-time recipient of the President’s Volunteer Service Award for volunteering over 900 hours helping to fight food insecurity, serving the homeless and mentoring at-risk children. She served as the President of the Black Student Union and as a Regional Teen Vice-President for Jack and Jill. Zaria’s development of an organization that focuses on social justice in America was recognized and rewarded with a Princeton Prize in Race Relations Certificate of Accomplishment. In the future, she plans to continue to develop initiatives that advance positive race relations in her community.

Bryana Pittman is majoring in Biological Systems Engineering with a concentration in Molecular Machine Learning at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University. Bryana is also interested in intellectual property law and investment management As a Fellow in the Kirchner Impact Foundation Program, she was able to gain more experience working in a multinational corporation and learning new investment strategies. In the future, she plans to pursue a PhD in Molecular Machine Learning.

Jaelyn Holiday is majoring in Engineering at Texas Agricultural and Mechanical University. On campus, she is an active member of the National Society of Black Engineers and the Society of Women Engineers. Despite the hardships, Le’Niya excelled academically, even finding time to participate in community service projects and church activities. In the future, she hopes to work as a Corporate Consultant

Maya Harrison

Howard University

Maya Harrison is majoring in Finance with a minor in Sport Administration at Howard University. She is a member of the Executive Leadership Honors Program and the 21st Century Advantage Program in the School of Business. Maya serves as a Campus Representative for Radio Flyer and as the Communications Director for the chapter of the American Marketing Association at Howard. In the future, Maya aspires to be a trailblazer in the world of sports.

Pierre Kapiamba Mbala is majoring in Engineering at James Madison University

He is the President of the university’s chapter of the National Society for Black Engineers and Founder of Buendedi, a nonprofit organization designed to help communities develop and interconnect. Using the skills that he has cultivated as an entrepreneur, Pierre raised funds to cover the high school tuition of nine students from the Kasaï-Oriental community in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In the future, he hopes to continue to develop innovative ideas to help the people in Africa to obtain the education that they need to achieve their goals and dreams.

Shawn Williamson, Jr.

University of North Carolina

Shawn Williamson, Jr. is majoring in Exercise and Sport Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. As an aspiring fitness professional, he has had many opportunities to serve in leadership roles as an event planner and volunteer in the community. Also, Shawn is a certified Basic Life Support and CPR provider. In the future, he hopes to become a Physical Therapist and establish a mentoring program for at-risk male youth in low-income communities.

Sidney Smith is majoring in International Business at Howard University. She completed an internship with Project Destined, where she was able to expand her knowledge in the area of real estate investing. Also, she serves as a Team Leader for the freshman class in the School of Business. Sidney volunteers at the Washington English Center and enjoys spending time in the dance studio. In the future, she hopes to find more opportunities that will deepen her understanding of business and allow her to serve the community.

She is a member of the Fostering Academics Mentoring Program, the Collegiate Midnight Golf Program and the Youth Homelessness Demonstration Program. She has volunteered at the Washtenaw County Public Defense Office and Caleb’s Kids, an organization in Detroit that is dedicated to advancing mental wellness through innovative programs. In the future, she hopes to complete her degree and continue to find ways to support members of the community

Jocelyn Lewis-Johnson

University of Maryland

Jocelyn Lewis-Johnson is a graduate student in Public Administration at the University of Maryland, College Park. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Economics with a minor in Political Science from Albright College. Jocelyn received funding from the Brogan Scholars Endowed Internship Fund. The award is given to outstanding students to help them to complete various internship programs. In the future, Jocelyn hopes to complete her graduate studies and explore her diverse career options.

Howard University

Junious Whitaker IV is a graduate student in History at Howard University. Also, he completed his undergraduate degree in History at Howard. For many years, Junious has worked as an Archivist in the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center. He is a member of the Graduate Student Council and the Mu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated. In the future, Junious plans to complete a doctorate, become a History Professor and help to develop schools in underprivileged communities.

Timothy Johnson

Timothy Johnson is completing his undergraduate studies at Coppin State University. As a professional entertainer, he has been hired to perform on cruise ships, in Las Vegas shows and for professional sports organizations such as the National Football League, National Basketball Association and the Women’s National Basketball Association. Timothy views dance as a way to connect members of the community. In the future, he hopes to use his performances to inspire change around the world.

Adeola Adelekan is majoring in Human Health and Visual Arts at Emory University. She believes an interdisciplinary education will be an invaluable worldview for developing the kind of innovative ideas that can improve healthcare in America and around the world. Adeola serves as the CoPresident of the African Student Association. Also, she serves as the Social Action Committee Chair of the Omicron Xi chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. Brooke Williams is majoring in Political Science with a minor in English at Spelman College. She has been inducted into the National Society of Leadership and Success, which offers students a wide array of leadership opportunities. Also, she is involved in Girl Power, Incorporated, a mentoring program for young girls in Atlanta, Georgia. Currently, she is a member of the Morehouse-Spelman Pre-Law Society, an organization that helps to prepare students for law school. Chandler Bursey-Reece is majoring in Computer Science at Howard University. He serves as an Executive Board Member for the Google Student Developer Club. Also, Chandler is a member of the National Society of Black Engineers and a member of the Association for Computing Machinery. During the summer of 2022, he completed an internship as a Software Developer at GoDaddy. Chandler is very involved in community service, volunteering at the local hospital and mentoring at EdLyft, a company that offers tutoring in Computer Science for college students. In the future, he plans to pursue more internship opportunities that help to prepare him for success as a Computer Scientist.

Imanni Wright

Chapman University

Imanni Wright is majoring in Broadcast Journalism at Chapman University. She was recognized as a 2019 Emma Bowen Fellow, which led to an internship as a Web Producer for a television station in Detroit, Michigan. Imanni has won several scholarships and honors from organizations such as the United Negro College Fund, Scholarship America and the National Association of Black Journalists. At Chapman, she has served in several auxiliary roles. Also, her dedication to community service is evident in her creation of Life and Basketball, a program that provides athletic training, test preparation resources and community service opportunities for young girls. In the future, Imanni plans to pursue graduate studies in Journalism.

Mahlet Tedla

University of Rochester

Mahlet Tedla is majoring in Film Studies at the University of Rochester. She is a member of the Black Student Union and The Pact, a mentoring program that supports and empowers youth. Mahlet has worked as an intern at Point Studio TV, a television broadcast company based in New York. In recognition of her leadership potential, Mahlet was awarded a POSSE Scholarship. In the future, she plans to explore more opportunities in the film industry.
