“I earned my place in LDW by showing up as a leader in my workplace in a specific capacity. What I’ve learned this week is that I do not and have not leveraged myself and my abilities strategically. This week has not only given me an awakening, and a guideline to follow, it has also given me a network of like-minded leaders who can provide me with feedback as I reinvent myself.”

The Problem
Black corporate professionals often treat their career advancement like a solo sport instead of a team sport.
There are good reasons why this is the case:
• Systemic racism has forced Black corporate professionals to be self-reliant
• Limited access to professional networks
• Absence of strong support systems
• Lack of awareness of available resources
• “Crabs in a barrel” mindset
The solution is clear: treat your career advancement like a team sport.
The question is: Who should be on your success squad?
The Solution
Your progression towards the C-Suite should be a team sport – not a solo sport. Every MVP needs a squad. Who might you cast in the following roles on your Success Squad?
1. Mentor
A mentor is an experienced professional who provides guidance, support, and advice to a corporate professional, helping them navigate their career by sharing their knowledge and expertise.
Sponsor
A sponsor is a senior-level executive or influential person within an organization who advocates for a corporate professional, opening doors to opportunities, providing visibility, and actively supporting their career advancement expertise.
3. Subject Matter Expert/ Thought Leader
A subject matter expert or thought leader is a corporate professional who possesses extensive knowledge and expertise in a specific field, and through their insights and innovative thinking, they establish themselves as a recognized authority.
4. Code Breaker
A code breaker is a corporate professional with exceptional problem-solving skills and a strong understanding of office politics, language and culture.
2.
5. Mentee
A mentee is a someone who seeks guidance and learning from a mentor, benefiting from their experience and insights to develop their skills, expand their network, and accelerate their career growth.
6. Protégé
A protégé is an individual who is taken under the wing of a senior professional, receiving personalized guidance, opportunities, and support to develop their skills, build their network, and progress in their career.
7. Hype Team
A hype team is a group of people who can help you elevate or regulate your energy when you need it most.
8. Personal Board of Directors
A personal board of directors refers to a select group of trusted and diverse-thinking individuals, including any of the above people, who provide perspective, guidance, and support to help corporate professionals make informed decisions and advance their career strategically.

“Before attending Leading Innovation, I was worried if the course would be the right fit for me, because I assumed it would be very technical. I’m glad I registered in spite of my concerns. Yes, it is about technology. However, it is really all about the new technologies, as well as tools to help you develop innovative solutions to business challenges. Anyone, with or without a technical background can get a lot out of this course.”
