Interim President & CEO The Executive Leadership Council
Welcome from The Executive Leadership Council Welcome to The Executive Leadership Council’s (ELC) 2020 National Business Case Competition Finals. When we made the decision to host this year’s Finals virtually, we had no idea that on April 14, nearly all office buildings around the country would be completely shut down and virtual engagement would be the “new normal” for all of us. This year’s topic around leadership in the digital age has taken on a whole new meaning. The reliance on technology to keep business, education, and society functional is no longer a concept. It is here and it is real. Our students’ case solutions could have real time impact - helping companies and executives tackle challenges they are facing right now. We are proud that through this competition, our students are effectively part of the solution. Congratulations to our Finalist teams from Howard University School of Business, Kelley School of Business at Indiana University, and Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. Each one of the three teams will receive a scholarship cash award in the following amounts: our third-place team will receive $15,000 and our second-place team will receive $20,000. The first-place team will receive $35,000. Additionally, they will be introduced during The ELC’s 2020 Recognition Gala in October in Washington, DC. On hand will be an audience of more than 2,200 corporate, education, and government leaders to congratulate them. This competition would not be possible without the sponsorship of a company which has continuously believed in the benefit of this experience to our students. Thank you, ExxonMobil! We are grateful for our 11 year partnership and your support of our only scholarship program for graduate students. It has truly impacted the lives of many student and the organizations they have gone on to work for. We also thank our judges and staff who helped make this experience possible. On behalf of the Board and members of The ELC, we wish each team success and a memorable and rewarding experience.

MESSAGE
ARTIS M. BROWN
Midwest Northeast Fuels Manager Exxon Mobil Corporation
Welcome from ExxonMobil On behalf of ExxonMobil, we would like to welcome you to the 2020 National Business Case Competition Finals. ExxonMobil is honored to once again sponsor and host The Executive Leadership Council’s (ELC) National Business Case Competition. The ELC has hosted the Business Case Competition for eighteen years and ExxonMobil has been the primary sponsor for the past eleven years. We are excited to see students of color from the nation’s top MBA/MA schools compete for $70,000 in scholarship prizes. This year’s case is “LEADERSHIP IN THE DIGITAL AGE.” The topic challenged teams to create a strategy to help a major oil and gas industry company execute a strategy that will use digitalization to improve financial performance and drive innovation, creativity and inclusiveness. Teams are also required to present an approach to recruiting and developing diverse and underrepresented groups to support the recommended digital strategy. When we planned this year’s competition, we could have never guessed that our country – our world – would be in the throws of a global pandemic. In a matter of weeks and – for some only days – work, school and life became dependent on virtual and technical infrastructures. For companies, individuals and families alike, we are now relying on technology to support us and bind us together. ExxonMobil is a fortunate recipient of the thoughtful, well-researched ideas presented by the teams who submitted cases this year. Finally, we appreciate the student teams, our ExxonMobil leadership team and The ELC staff for their focus on ensuring this competition could be held as planned for 2020. Welcome and enjoy the competition.
