Luis Oscar Muñiz, a Rincoeño full of culinary creativity

It all started in 2002 when Oscar decided to turn his life around and left for Montauk, New York. There he worked seasonally in a kitchen doing prep. When the employees noticed Oscar’s speed, they trained him at different stations. In less than a month, he was already working on the line. At the end of that season, he returned to Rincón and later began working at The Landing. But in 2003, he returned to New York, to Shelter Island to work at The Chequit Inn. He started working on the line, becoming the Executive Chef of the place after three years. During the next few years, he returned to Puerto Rico. He began working at Tamboo, The Horned Dorset Primavera Hotel, and at Niche in Condado. Until he reached the opportunity to bring his talent and creativity to La Fortaleza’s kitchen from November 2011 until April 2012. One of his favorite anecdotes from his time in La Fortaleza is when he was faced with a challenge by the First Lady. She asked him if he could recreate a Charcuterie Board similar to one she saw in New York for her mom’s birthday. Accepting the challenge, Oscar created a table that exceeded the First Lady’s expectations during the celebration at La Fortaleza. She was so grateful. In 2013 he moved to Atlanta, Georgia, and started working for one of the largest catering companies. In 2017 he established his own restaurant Sabores Boutique Café in conjunction with his catering company O.M. Collective Cuisine. The rest is history! As a result of everything that happened globally with the pandemic, he felt the need to be closer to his family and children. He began looking for places to invest in Rincón until he conceived a project. After selling his restaurant in Atlanta, everything fell into place to fulfill his destiny. Now, he captures us through Taste Gastrobar by Chef Oscar Muñiz with an international concept of tapas and casual fine cuisine. Where he focuses on recreating international dishes adding a local creative touch. “We are thrilled with the reception that our concept has had, as it is quite unique and creative. Todo comenzó en el verano del 2002 cuando decidió darle un giro a su vida y se fue para Montauk, NY. Donde luego trabajó por temporadas. Comenzó de preparador en cocina. Cuando notaron la rapidez en que trabajaba le preguntaron si le interesaba aprender las diferentes estaciones y en menos de un mes ya estaba en la línea. Al final de esa última temporada regresó a Rincón y comenzó a trabajar en The Landing. En el 2003 viaja a Shelter Island, NY para trabajar en The Chequit Inn. Directamente comenzó a trabajar en la línea y luego de tres años ya era el Chef Ejecutivo en el lugar. Durante los próximos años toca suelo boricua trabajando en Tamboo, en el Hotel Horned Dorset Primavera, y en Niche en Condado. Teniendo la oportunidad de llevar su talento y creatividad hasta la cocina en La Fortaleza desde noviembre del 2011 hasta abril de 2012. Una de las anécdotas más significativas ha sido cuando la primera dama le preguntó si se atrevía a preparar un tablero de charcutería similar a uno que vio en un hotel en New York para el cumpleaños de su mamá. La celebración fue allí en La Fortaleza, y la mesa con los tableros sobrepasó todas las expectativas que tenía la primera dama. Estuvo muy agradecida. Cuando regresa a Shelter Island, NY como Chef Ejecutivo. A eso del 2013 se muda a Atlanta, GA trabajando para una de las compañías más grandes de catering. En el 2017 estableció su propio restaurante Sabores Boutique Café en conjunto con su compañía de catering O.M. Collective Cuisine. ¡El resto es historia! Ahora… nos conquista a través de Taste Gastrobar by Chef Oscar Muñiz desde el 4 de marzo con un concepto internacional de tapas y casual fine cuisine. Influenciado por todo lo que ha sucedido en escala mundial desde el año 2020 hasta el presente con la pandemia. Y, sintiendo en sí la necesidad de estar más cerca de la familia e hijos por consiguiente comenzó a buscar donde invertir en Rincón y dió con este proyecto. Al vender su restaurante Sabores en Atlanta todo cayó en su sitio y tal cual estaba destinado. Por ende… su enfoque ha sido conquistarnos a través de la recreación de platos internacionales añadiendoles un toque local y creativo.

Gnarly Charly’s Grom Surf Series & Legend Surf Classic Join forces for the Kids=>Jovenes Grom Surf Series y Legend Surf Classic unen fuerzas por los jóvenes

A Team of local Instructors & Volunteers help offer Free Surf Clinics for children and youth in Rincón After several months of a restrictive Covid-19 lockdown with very limited surfing and no contest or fun events being organized at all due to safety protocols established within the Executive Order, a group of friends, brothers and sisters of the Legend Surf Classic family saw the opportunity to let the “groms” take center on Friday morning at Maria’s Beach.

Months of planning and figuring out how to put together a great experience for local kids and a youth group traveling along with Gnarly Charley, turned into an amazing morning and surf session at the beach where young surfers of all ages up to 15 years enjoyed from a well hosted & supported event by the local community. “Since everyone is just coming out of 10-12 months recess and the annual Legend Surf Classic contest held in Rincon at the begging of the year got postponed, Gnarly Charlie and I began to discuss how to come up with this small, low key event for the youngsters as a way to kick-off what we love to do throughout the year” - explained Monty Smith on how the idea was shaped between him and Charlie, who is already a regular contestant and a winner at the LSC’s last event. As the date planned approached and the beach ban for group events was lifted, the group went ahead with the mission established. Perhaps waves 10-14 feet high just few days before the event poised dangerous for the kids / participants forcing a change to be a Friday/One Day only event which enjoyed from 3-4 foot surf perfect conditions and the outstanding support by the Alber Lash Surf School & Marias Resort, Sea & Ski. And all sponsors. Un equipo de instructores y voluntarios locales ayudan a ofrecer clínicas de surf gratuitas para niños y jóvenes en Rincón. Después de varios meses del cierre restrictivo por el COVID-19 con surf muy limitado y sin concursos o eventos divertidos debido a los protocolos de seguridad de la Orden Ejecutiva, un grupo de amigos, hermanos y hermanas unieron sus fuerzas. La familia Legend Surf Classic vio la oportunidad de dejar que los groms tomaran el centro de atención el viernes por la mañana en la playa de María.

Tras meses de planificación y viajes junto con Gnarly Charley para organizar una gran experiencia para los niños y jóvenes locales, la mañana se convirtió en una fantástica sesión matutina de surf. Habían jóvenes surfistas de todas las edades hasta los 15 años. Disfrutaron de un evento bien organizado con el apoyo de la comunidad local. “Dado que todo el mundo acababa de salir de un receso de 10 a 12 meses y el concurso anual Legend Surf Classic en Rincón se pospuso. Gnarly Charlie y yo comenzamos a discutir cómo crear este evento pequeño y discreto para los más jóvenes como una forma de comenzar lo que nos encanta hacer durante todo el año”, explicó Monty Smith. La idea se formó entre él y Charlie, quien ya es un concursante habitual y ganador en el último evento Legend Surf Classic.

A medida que se acercaba la fecha planificada y se levantaba la prohibición de las playas para eventos grupales, el grupo siguió adelante con la misión establecida. Quizás olas de 10 a 14 pies de altura unos días antes del evento eran peligrosas para los niños. Los participantes forzaron un cambio para ser un evento el viernes de un solo día que disfrutó de condiciones perfectas para el surf con olas de 3-4 pies y el apoyo excepcional de todos los patrocinadores. (Escuela de surf Alber Lash, Maria ‘s Resort, Sea & Ski y todos los demás patrocinadores).

“On Friday morning we’ve woke to perfect surf for the “Groms” who showed up early frothing on the beach to surf. The event kick-off with several free surfing clinics between 9-10:30am were 19-20 youngsters sign up and enjoyed the “stoke” of getting tips from local instructors, while another smaller group accepted the challenge of signing up for a surfing fogueo between them. These events help kids to accustom themselves to the contest surfing rules and time schedules. A skills contest was divided into 11 years and younger division and a 11 years and older division with the oldest maybe 15 years old” – detailed Charlie in regards to the friendly competition between local kids and those visiting and enjoying from the West Coast Surf.

A significant group of kids / youth showed up (respecting Covid19 Protocal) with their parents and certainly enjoyed from great day. The photographs tell it all. “I personally have to quote that it was the best, funniest & greatest Kids event I’ve ever seen in living over 70 years and surfing over 57 of them” - concluded Monty Smith, as the President for Legend Surf Classic PR “El viernes por la mañana, tuvimos el surf perfecto para los groms que aparecieron temprano en la playa para surfear. El evento comenzó con varias clínicas de surf gratuitas entre las 9:00-10:30 AM. Donde un grupo de 19-20 jóvenes se inscribieron y disfrutaron de la alegría de recibir consejos de los instructores locales. Otro grupo más pequeño aceptó el desafío de inscribirse en un fogueo de surf entre ellos mismos. Estos eventos ayudan a los niños a acostumbrarse a las reglas y horarios de los concursos de surf. Un concurso de habilidades fue dividido en dos divisiones, una de 11 años o menos y otra de 11 años y más, teniendo el mayor de los jóvenes 15 años de edad”- detalló Charlie. Fue una competencia amistosa entre los niños locales y visitantes donde disfrutaron del surf de la costa oeste.

Se presentó un grupo significativo de niños / jóvenes que respetaron el protocolo COVID-19 con sus padres y ciertamente disfrutaron de un gran día. Las fotografías lo dicen todo. “Personalmente tengo que decir que fue el mejor y más divertido evento para niños que he visto. Y he vivido más de 70 años y surfeado más de 57 de ellos”, concluyó Monty Smith, presidente de Legend Surf Classic PR.
