Welcome February is known as the month of love. When we think about love, we tend to imagine a strong and warm relationship between a man and woman. However, love can flourish between anything and anyone. Friendship to me is one of the strongest bonds one can have and can last a lifetime. The following is one of my favorite quotes by Jim Morrison: “A true friend is someone who lets you have total freedom to be yourself – and especially to feel. Or, not feel. Whatever you happen to be feeling at the moment is fine with them. That’s what real love amounts to – letting a person be what he really is.”

Cover Artist Alberto Padilla has been an artist since the age of 3 when he created his first drawing of a shark (that his mom still has to this day). Albert paints scenes of the surf and nature using acrylics and spray paint. His art can be seen at many local businesses such as BD Café, El Bohio, BE Rincón and more. Custom hats are one of his most popular items. You can find his work at his stand at Maria’s beach daily.

Bienvenido El mes de febrero es conocido como el mes del amor. Cuando pensamos en el amor tendemos a imaginarnos una relación fuerte y afectuosa entre una mujer y un hombre. No obstante, el amor puede florecer entre cualquiera y entre cualquier cosa. La amistad para mi es uno de los lazos más fuertes que uno puede tener y estos pueden perdurar durante toda la vida. La siguiente es una de mis citas favoritas de Jim Morrison: “Un verdadero amigo es aquel que te deja gozar de total libertad para que seas tú mismo – en especial para sentir. O, no sentir. Lo que sea que estés sintiendo en ese momento está bien con ellos. A eso es a lo que el amor verdadero equivale – permitirle a una persona ser quien realmente es.”

Artista de la Portada Alberto Padilla ha sido artista desde que tenía 3 años cuando creo su primer dibujo de un tiburón (su madre aún posee este dibujo). El pinta escenas del surfing y de la naturaleza utilizando pinturas acrílicas y pinturas en spray. The Solar System Project By Keyla Álvarez - First, Second, and Third Grade Teacher Lower Elementary Social Studies and Science Teacher

The second graders worked on a project to create the Solar System using balls of styrofoam. Students were placed in groups of four and each one was assigned a planet. Afterwards, they colored the styrofoam balls and placed the planets in the correct order in a platform. This project allowed the students to learn about the planets in a fun an creative way.

Aprendemos jugando Por Arleen M. Colón Maestra de Español En nuestra clase de español en segundo grado estuvimos aprendiendo sobre el adjetivo. Además de leer la información provista por el libro de texto los estudiantes estuvieron realizando un proyecto. El mismo consistía en colorear unas láminas y luego, escribirles un adjetivo. Al finalizar el proyecto los estudiantes habían creado un juego de memoria. De esta misma manera los estudiantes del tercer grado crearon el proyecto del juego de memoria, pero con el tema de “palabras simples y compuestas”. Se divirtieron a la misma vez que aprendían.

Participating in the D-Coding Workshop By Jesús Ramos—Technology Teacher On October 27, 2015, the 11th graders had the opportunity to attend the D-Coding computer programming workshop sponsored by Banco Popular de Puerto Rico. This workshop focused on the importance of programming as it was intended to promote computer coding among high school students. The students participated in lectures offered by Banco Popular's Technology and Resources Division as well as leading software engineers in the industry. LinkedIn’s Members of Technology Management served as resources for the workshop session. At one point, students learned the meaning of programming and design, and coded us the idea. In addition, they were allowed to fix the code and design a video game application. This activity gave the students a different perspective of the world of programming and an opportunity to immerse themselves into it.

Rincón’s luscious landscape and marvelous sunsets make it a very romantic place, and the favorite wedding destination for many couples who travel hundreds of miles to create memories in our little town. Many have also made Rincón their hometown. Some have found love, and some live and love having as framework this gorgeous piece of paradise. Throughout my years working, some of those living in Rincón, I have heard many great love stories. These are some of them.

Enid and Héctor met dancing and have not stopped since then. “We were both 62 years old when Héctor and I met. We had been married before and neither of us wanted a relationship.” says Enid Miranda, with her usual aliveness and spark. She loved to dance. One night, at a Club in Aguada, she noticed a very tall, dark, and handsome gentleman who immediately caught her attention. She was instantly smitten, but slightly unsure since the gentleman looked quite young. In the meantime, Héctor Igartúa, who had also noticed Enid, was having the same doubts. But he asked her to dance. And they danced together for the rest of the evening; no conversation, just dancing. One month after their first encounter, they forgot all about the “no relationship vow” and allowed their hearts to dance them through love’s musical cadence. And nine years later, they have not left each other’s side. “We discovered we had many things in common and that we love each other’s company.” says Héctor. Now both retired, they spend their time traveling through the island and abroad, discovering and enjoying Puerto Rico’s culture and history, searching for materials for their art work, taking classes, creating art, and of course, dancing. When we asked them about the secret for a happy relationship, they said, “Communication, patience, flexibility to adjust to each other’s characters and needs, and more than anything, having interests in common to share.” After a short pause, Enid gave us one last piece of advice… “Know what you want, make a list of everything you want in your partner, read the list every day, and manifest it. I did.” she concluded as she held Héctor’s hand and offered us a big smile. Page 12

El hermoso paisaje y los maravillosos atardeceres de Rincón hacen de este un muy romántico lugar, además del sitio favorito para las bodas de muchas parejas que viajan cientos de millas para crear recuerdos en nuestro lindo pueblo. Muchos también han hecho de Rincón su hogar. Algunos han encontrado el amor, y otros aman y viven teniendo como fondo este hermoso pedazo del paraíso. A lo largo de mis años de trabajo, algunos de ellos viviendo en Rincón, he escuchado muchas lindas historias de amor. Estas son algunos de ellas.

Enid y Héctor se conocieron bailando y no han dejado de hacerlo desde entonces. “Los dos teníamos 62 años de edad cuando Héctor y yo nos conocimos. Ambos habíamos estado casados anteriormente y ninguno de los dos quería compromiso”. Dice Enid Miranda, con su vitalidad y su chispa habitual. A ella le encantaba bailar. Una noche, en un club nocturno en Aguada, se fijó en un caballero alto, moreno y guapo, que de inmediato le llamó la atención. Fue un flechazo instantáneo, pero sintió dudas, ya que el caballero se veía muy joven. Mientras tanto, Héctor Igartúa, quién también se había fijado en Enid, tenía las mismas dudas. Pero él la invitó a bailar. Y bailaron juntos por el resto de la noche; ninguna conversación, sólo bailaron. Un mes más tarde, se olvidaron por completo de su voto de “no compromiso,” permitiendo que sus corazones bailaran al ritmo de la cadencia musical del amor. Nueve años más tarde no se han separado el uno del otro. “Descubrimos que teníamos muchas cosas en común y que nos encanta estar juntos.” Dice Héctor. Ya jubilados, ahora pasan su tiempo viajando tanto a través de la isla como en el extranjero, descubriendo y disfrutando de la cultura y la historia de

Puerto Rico, en búsqueda de materiales para sus obras de arte, tomando clases, creando arte, y por supuesto, bailando. Cuando les preguntamos sobre el secreto para una relación feliz, nos dijeron, “La comunicación, la paciencia, la flexibilidad para adaptarse a las personalidades y las necesidades del otro, y más que nada, tener intereses en común para compartir”. Después de una breve pausa, Enid nos dio un último consejo... “Es importante saber lo que uno quiere, hacer una lista de todo lo que quieres en tu pareja, leer la lista todos los días, y manifestarlo. Yo lo hice”. Concluyó Enid, mientras sostenía la mano de Héctor y nos ofrecía una gran sonrisa.

Grisel and Fred have never been afraid of new beginnings and taking risks. Though natural of Rincón, Grisel Valle was raised in New York City and never thought that love would be what made her return to her hometown. On the other hand, Fred Lentz, who has made Rincón his home for almost 30 years, never imagined falling in love with someone he already knew. “My daughter Abby, and Heather, one of Fred’s daughters were friends”. says Grisel. But it was not until Grisel’s vacation in 2010 when they found each other. “I saw him briefly, and I was quite impressed to see Fred speaking Spanish so well,” says Grisel. Fred interrupts and adds, “I had also noticed her, and her face looked familiar, but I could not place her.” Grisel found out that Fred was now single. Through Facebook, they got in touch and started to communicate. Grisel then returns to Rincón, only to realize that she had found love. But ... she already had a life in New York and the possibility of moving to Puerto Rico, made her hesitant. “After thinking about it carefully, I knew what I wanted. Fred was a good family man and he had many of the qualities I wanted in a partner.” says Grisel. Without thinking about it much further, Grisel took a leap of faith and moved with her daughter to Rincón, leaving behind work, life and family in New York. “As it often happens, we’ve had our challenges, but almost six years later we are very happy and we have welcomed our daughter Alana Lentz Valle, who is a great and unexpected gift.” says Fred and adds, “Our secret? – lots of respect and working together hand in hand ... “ Grisel interjects. “Communication is important as well as giving each other the space to be ourselves. We do not have everything in common, but we complement and support each other to pursue the things we love and feel passionate about. “ Both love their family life and enjoy the new home they just built. A little piece of advice ... “No matter what you’ve been through or how much time has passed, it is always good to give yourself a second chance and take risks. “You have to play to win!” Concludes Grisel.

Grisel y Fred nunca le han temido a los nuevos comienzos ni a tomarse riesgos. Aunque era natural de Rincón, Grisel Valle se crió en la ciudad de Nueva York y nunca pensó que sería el amor lo que le hiciese regresar a su pueblo natal. Por otro lado, Fred Lentz, quién ha hecho de Rincón su hogar por casi 30 años, nunca pensó enamorarse de alguien a quien ya conocía. “Mi hija Abby, y Heather, una de las hijas de Fred eran amigas”. Nos comenta Grisel. Pero no fue hasta unas de las vacaciones de Grisel en el 2010 cuando se encuentran. “Lo vi brevemente, pero me impresionó mucho ver la fluidez con la que Fred hablaba el español”. Dice Grisel. Fred la interrumpe y añade, “Yo también la había visto y su cara me resultó familiar, pero en ese momento no podía recordar de donde la conocía.” Grisel se enteró de que Fred estaba soltero. Por medio de Facebook se comunicaron. Grisel regresa entonces a Rincón solo para darse cuenta que había encontrado el amor. Pero… ya ella tenía una vida hecha en Nueva York y ante la posibilidad de mudarse a Puerto Rico, tuvo dudas. “Luego de meditarlo, yo supe lo que quería. Fred era un hombre bueno y de familia, y tenía muchas de las cualidades que deseaba en un compañero”. dice Grisel. Sin pensarlo mucho más, Grisel realizó un acto de fe mudándose con su hija a Rincón y dejando atrás trabajo, vida y familia en Nueva York, “Como es normal, hemos tenido nuestros retos, pero casi 6 años más tarde, somos muy felices y le hemos dado la bienvenida a nuestra hija Alana Lentz Valle, que es un regalo grande e inesperado”. nos dice Fred y continúa, “¿Nuestro secreto? - Mucho respeto y trabajar juntos mano a mano…” Grisel añade, “La comunicación es importante y también darnos el espacio para ser nosotros mismos. No tenemos todo en común, pero nos complementamos y nos apoyamos en los que nos apasiona a cada uno”. Ambos aman su vida familiar y disfrutan de la nueva casa que acaban de construir. Consejitos… No importa por todo lo que hayas pasado o el tiempo que haya pasado, siempre es bueno darse una segunda oportunidad y tomarse riesgos. “¡Hay que jugar para ganar!” concluye Grisel. For Heidi and Vanessa relationships are about Spirit and personal growth. They believe that people come together to teach and to learn from each other, but moreover, for a higher purpose. And they are no exception. “Heidi was born in Perú and I was born in Bayamón, Puerto Rico. We both grew up in New Jersey and knew each other from High School.” says Vanessa. They lost touch, and 15 years later, Heidi’s place of employment happened to be next to the radio station where Vanessa hosted her own radio show. “There are no coincidences. We were meant to meet again because there were things we needed to do together.” Comments Heidi. As they started a new life as a couple, they meditated about where they would go. They searched for a special place that would have an arts and holistic community, be bilingual, embrace diversity, with beautiful and rich nature, and kindred spirits. “And that is how we came to Rincón.” Says Vanessa. “We are a team.” Says Heidi and continues, “Seven years into our relationship, we continue to work together and support each other’s interests - my craft work and Vanessa’s music.” “It is important for us to participate, contribute, and give back. We believe in creating and nurturing a community that embraces diversity and offers space for healing.” comments Vanessa. They are very committed to the Art Walk and with any other cause that defends and respects nature, animals, and human beings. Both coming from a religious background they have kept Spirit at the center of their relationship. “It is what keeps us together.” says Vanessa. A piece of advice… “Remove expectations, embrace and work on what you’ve got, listen, grow together, and always make room for each other.” These are only three of the many loves stories I have come to know. But what seems to be the common thread of the love shared by these couples is another fabulous and ongoing love affair with a town so beautiful and warm that allows love to be born and to flourish amidst the waves, the sky and the most beautiful sunsets in the world.

Para Heidi y Vanessa las relaciones tienen que ver con la espiritualidad y el crecimiento personal. Ellas creen que las personas se juntan para enseñar y para aprender unos de otros, pero más que nada, para un propósito más elevado. Y ellas no son una excepción. “Heidi nació en Perú y yo nací en Bayamón, Puerto Rico. Ambas crecimos en Nueva Jersey y nos conocíamos desde la Escuela Superior”. Dice Vanessa. Perdieron contacto y, 15 años más tarde, el lugar de trabajo de Heidi estaba justo al lado de la estación de radio donde Vanessa tenía su propio programa de radio. “No existen las coincidencias. Estábamos destinadas a encontrarnos de nuevo porque había cosas que necesitábamos hacer juntas”. Comenta Heidi. Al comenzar una nueva vida como pareja, meditaron sobre a dónde irían. Ellas buscaban un lugar especial que tuviera una comunidad holística y de artistas, que fuera bilingüe, diversa, con una naturaleza rica y hermosa, y almas afines. “Y así es como llegamos a Rincón.”, Dice Vanessa. “Somos un equipo”, dice Heidi y continúa: “Después de 7 años juntas, continuamos trabajando y apoyando los intereses de la otra - mi trabajo artesanal y la música de Vanessa.” “Es importante para nosotros participar, contribuir y retribuir. Creemos en la creación y el fomento de una comunidad que acepta la diversidad y ofrece espacio para la sanación.” Comenta Vanessa. Ellas están muy comprometidas con el “Art Walk” y con cualquier otra causa que defienda y respete la naturaleza, los animales y los seres humanos. Como ambas provienen de un trasfondo religioso, ellas han mantenido la espiritualidad como centro de su relación. “Es lo que nos mantiene juntas.” Dice Vanessa. Un consejo... “Deshacerse de las expectativas, acoger y trabajar con lo que tienes, escuchar, crecer juntas, y siempre darle espacio a la otra persona.” Estos son sólo tres de las muchas historias de amor que he llegado a conocer. Pero lo que parece ser el factor común en el amor compartido por estas parejas es otra fabulosa y duradera historia de amor con un pueblo tan hermoso y cálido que permite que el amor nazca y florezca en medio de las olas, el cielo y los más hermosos atardeceres del mundo.

Valentines Gifts from the Art Walk Regalos de San Valentín del Art Walk Evelyn, Milagro, & Lissette

Evelyn Diaz Varela Evelyn loves being an artisan in Rincón, helping to coordinate art walk and communicating with other people from Rincón and around the world. She was born in New York and later moved to Rincón to raise her three children. She has been working for the Rincón Municipio since 1998, 15 years at the cemetery, and now works for the tourism department greeting and helping visitors. In her free time, she collects sea glass and shells and turns them into works of art. She wraps glass and shells in soldering wire creating earrings, necklaces and bracelets. She also designs the faces of the three kings on gourds and pieces of mahogany. Evelyn has a secret mixture of shells and adhesive she uses along with gold paint and other beach items she has collected. Her artisan business is named El Fanguito 410 in dedication to her mother. Fanguito, the name of a poor barrio in Santurce where her mother was raised, means “a muddy area” in English. And 410 stands for Evelyn’s birthday. According to Evelyn “all her craftsmanship is dedicated to her mother.” Evelyn is at the Rincón Art Walk every Thursday and at the Farmers Market on Sundays.

Evelyn ama ser una artesana en Rincón, el poder ayudar a coordinar el Art Walk y tener la oportunidad de comunicarse con otras personas tanto de Rincón como de otras partes del mundo. Ella nació en Nueva York y posteriormente se mudó a Rincón para criar a sus tres hijos. Ha estado trabajando para el Municipio de Rincón desde el 1998. Durante 15 años trabajó en el cementerio Municipal y ahora trabaja para el departamento de turismo dándoles la bienvenida y ayudando a los visitantes de nuestro pueblo. En su tiempo libre ella recolecta cristales de mar y caracoles y los transforma en verdaderas obras de arte. Ella envuelve los cristales de mar y los caracoles con alambres de soldadura creando pantallas, collares y brazaletes únicos. También, creo los rostros de los tres reyes magos con calabazas y pedazos de caoba. Evelyn posee una mezcla secreta de pegamento y caracoles la cual utiliza en conjunto con pintura dorada y otros artículos playeros que ella recoge. El nombre de su negocio de artesanías es “El Fanguito 410” en honor a su madre. El Fanguito, es el nombre de uno de los arrabales que existió en Santurce, P.R. y fue ahí donde su madre creció. El 410 es simbólico a la fecha de nacimiento de Evelyn. De acuerdo con Evelyn “toda mi arte es dedicada a mi madre.” Pueden encontrar a Evelyn todos los jueves en el ArtWalk de Rincón y los domingos en el Mercado Agroecológico.

Lissette Carrero Morales Jewelry Designer Diseñadora de joyería Lissette Carrero Morales is a well known jewelry artist from Rincón, Puerto Rico. Her eclectic family formation and professional life in agronomy, music, theater, art, sports, and jewelry making have united in a triangular formation in order to express her work in a poetic manner. For over fifteen years, her creative hands have transformed her life experiences into unique pieces of artisanal work. Crystals, seeds, shells, semi precious stones and metals unite and are transformed into beams of light that reflect the history of Puerto Rico. Lissette is recognized island wide for her work, of which many pieces are displayed in the Art Museum of Puerto Rico, something Rincón is very proud of. Her new collection Triádica is available at the Rincón Art Walk every Thursday and every Sunday at the Farmers Market. Appointments for her workshop can also be coordinated by calling 817-458-6476.

Lissette Carrero Morales es una artesana rincoeña con una formación familiar y profesional muy ecléctica la cual incluye agronomía, música, teatro, arte, deportes y joyería. Todas estas destrezas se han unido en forma de un triángulo interconectado para expresar poéticamente y artísticamente sus trabajos los cuales son elaborados de un modo altamente artístico y creativo. Sus manos creadoras han transformado por más de quince años sus vivencias en piezas de arte únicas confeccionadas artesanalmente. En sus obras de arte los cristales, semillas, caracoles, piedras semipreciosas, y metales sencillos se unen transformándose en puentes de luz, reflejando nuestra historia y sus sentimientos en todas las dimensiones. Es un gran orgullo para Rincón que alguien de este pueblo sea reconocido a nivel Isla y que su trabajo sea expuesto en el Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico. Sus creaciones están disponibles todos los jueves en el ArtWalk de Rincón y los domingos en el Mercado Agroecológico. Milagro Chaparro Milagro Chaparro is an artisan from the Coqui sector of Bo Cruces, Rincón. She designs and hand makes her unique purses, bracelets and hair pins. With her creativity, she is able to turn ordinary things such as coffee sacks into one of a kind items any girl would love. She has been making these colorful creations for the past seven years and sells them at the Rincón Art Walk and occasionally at other locations around the island.

Hector Chaparro Hector Chaparro was born in Puerto Rico but lived most of his life in Newark, New Jersey. This is where he took his first woodworking class and at a young age, fell in love with the craft. When he was older and able to afford it, he bought his first tool, a table saw. Hector is completely self-taught; he learned everything from wood working magazines and his own trial and error. 48 years later, he has mastered his craft. He makes lamps, purses, necklaces, over 30 types of jewelry boxes and much more from mahogany and other woods such as mango. According to Hector, “I can pretty much make anything from wood.” All his work is hand made with love.

Con su creatividad ella es capaz de transformar artículos ordinarios como sacos de café en regalos singulares y únicos que cualquier chica desearía tener. Ella ha estado confeccionando estas coloridas creaciones por los pasados siete años y las vende en el ArtWalk de Rincón.

Héctor Chaparro nació en Puerto Rico pero vivió gran parte de su vida en Newark, Nueva Jersey. Fue aquí donde tomo su primera clase de carpintería y desde muy temprana edad se enamoró de esta artística destreza. Cuando fue mayor y capaz de costear sus cosas el compro su primera herramienta, una sierra de mesa. Héctor es completamente autodidacto, aprendió todo lo que sabe sobre trabajar madera de revistas especializadas y de los intentos y errores que ha cometido. Luego de 48 años puede decir sin temor alguno que ha logrado dominar este arte. El hace lámparas, carteras, collares, sandalias, sobre 30 tipos de joyeros distintos y muchísimo más. Todo es realizado utilizando caoba, mango, y capa prieta. De acuerdo con Héctor “Yo puedo hacer cualquier cosa con madera.” Todos sus trabajos son hechos a mano con mucho amor.

The Rincón Library La Biblioteca de Rincón Written & Translated by Cristina Nieves

“I ransack public libraries, and find them full of sunken treasures.” Virginia Woolf Growing up in Rincón has always been a blessing for me. My childhood was one full of magic, not only because of the beaches and natural beauty that make Rincón the awesome town it is, but it was also full of magic thanks to the public library. Established in 1980, the Luis Muñoz Marín Public Library of Rincón, for over 30 years, has been giving our community the tools to educate themselves and grow intellectually. It started as a pilot project that was meant to fulfill the immediate necessity of having a public library that was capable of giving school students the educational resources necessary and at the same time was capable of complementing the libraries of the local schools. Based on these needs, Evaristo Cardona (High School Director at the time), Rubén Bonet (Teacher), Ceferino Caro (Mayor), Enrique Arrarás, the Unión Rincoeña and the Municipal Assembly joined together and founded the Public Library of Rincón. The first library was located on road 115, right where the store “Mundo Creativo” is establish today. Years later the building where it currently resides was constructed on Calle Nueva Final, right behind the now closed Rincón Skate Park. Since its beginnings the librarian was Hilda González, who retired 10 years ago, after sharing all her knowledge with our community. The Public Library has various collections of books including a children’s collection, reference collection, Puerto Rican collection, a Latin American literature selection as well as an English literature selection, magazines, and a vast diversity of specialized books. They also have a scholar reserve area where the teachers of our local schools, particularly the teachers of the middle school, leave a copy of the text books used in their courses so that students can have access to them without having to purchase them. More of their amenities include their seven computers with internet access, which can be used by any person that needs them without cost. The time permitted to use the computers is based on each persons necessity. You can also go to the library and use their photocopy machine, their scanner and their printer. In addition, they have an audiovisual room where people can draw with the help of a projector, its also occasionally used to give tutoring lessons. Even with all this the Public Library of Rincón is much more that a center for studying but also a fundamental part of our community. In the library they hold trainings, talks, workshops, reunions, and other activities related to both school and the community. When I talked with the actual attendant of the library Wanda I. Vializ, one of my intrigues in regards with the library was to know which sector of our community uses the library with more frequency. According to Wandy, how i’ve lovingly known her for over more than 15 years, the library is used by everyone. From students, teachers, parents and citizens to tourist and people from other towns. They all find the library an oasis of peace and learning.

Fundada en 1980, la Biblioteca Municipal Luis Muñoz Marín de Rincón lleva más de 30 años brindándole a nuestra comunidad las herramientas para educarse y crecer intelectualmente. Comenzó como un proyecto piloto debido a la necesidad imperante que existía de que hubiera una biblioteca municipal que les proveyera a los estudiantes de las escuelas los recursos educativos necesarios y que a su vez complementara a las bibliotecas de los centros docentes. Fue partiendo de dicha necesidad que Evaristo Cardona (Principal de la Escuela Superior en ese entonces), Rubén Bonet (Maestro), Ceferino Cardona (Alcalde), Enrique Arrarás, la Union Rincoeña y la Asamblea Municipal decidieron unir sus fuerzas y fundaron la Biblioteca Municipal de Rincón. Esta se ubicó primeramente en la carretera 115 donde hoy es la tienda “Mundo Creativo”, posteriormente, se construyó el edificio donde se encuentra actualmente. Este está localizado en la Calle Nueva Final, justo detrás de lo que era el Skate Park de Rincón. Desde sus comienzos su bibliotecaria fue Hilda González, quien se retiró hace 10 años, luego de haber compartido todos sus conocimientos con nuestra comunidad. La Biblioteca Municipal cuenta con varias colecciones de libros incluyendo una colección infantil, colección de referencia, colección puertorriqueña, revistas, una sección de literatura hispanoamericana y otra de literatura inglesa, y diversos libros especializados en distintas materias y temas. Además, poseen un área de reserva escolar donde los maestros de las escuelas locales pueden dejar una copia de los libros de texto de sus clases para que los estudiantes puedan tener acceso a estos sin tener que comprarlos. También, cuentan con siete computadoras con internet, las cuales pueden ser utilizadas por cualquier persona que las necesite sin cargo alguno. No obstante, el tiempo de uso de las mismas es ajustado de acuerdo a la necesidad de la persona. Otro de los servicios que brinda la biblioteca a nuestra comunidad es el hecho de que poseen impresora, fotocopiadora y scanner. De igual importancia, la biblioteca cuenta con un cuarto audiovisual donde las personas pueden realizar dibujos con la ayuda de proyectores y el cual en ocasiones es utilizado para impartir tutorías Sin embargo, la Biblioteca Municipal de Rincón es mucho más que un centro de estudio, es parte integral de nuestra comunidad. En la misma se llevan a cabo adiestramientos, charlas, talleres, reuniones, y otras actividades tanto a nivel escolar como de la comunidad. Cuando converse con la encargada actual de la biblioteca Wanda I. Vializ, una de mis interrogantes era conocer qué sector de nuestra comunidad utiliza mayormente la biblioteca. De acuerdo con Wandy, como cariñosamente la conozco desde hace más de 15 años, la biblioteca es utilizada por todos. Desde estudiantes, maestros, padres, y ciudadanos hasta turistas y personas de otros pueblos,

Recently, the garden at the entrance of the library was remodeled creating a tranquil area where people can relax under the shade of the trees while enjoying one of life’s pleasures, reading. When I asked Wandy what motivated the transformation of the entrance she told me that there was a necessity for an area where people could sit peacefully to read, study or use the library’s WIFI (which by the way is completely free) without having to sit on the sidewalk or having to stay in their cars after the library has closed. Well, the need was heard and the transformation is beautiful. In addition to the remodeling of the entrance, the Rincón municipality just bought new books for the library, complementing the existing collections. There is no doubt that libraries are essential learning centers for any community. The Luis Muñoz Marín Public Library of Rincón operates Monday through Thursday from 8am to 9pm with brakes taken from 12:00-12:30pm and from 5:30-6:30pm, and Friday from 8am to 5:30pm without breaks.

Recientemente, el jardín en la entrada de la biblioteca fue remodelado creando un área tranquila donde las personas pueden relajarse bajo la sombra de los arboles mientras disfrutan de uno de los placeres de la vida, la lectura. Al preguntarle a Wandy que motivó esa transformación en la entrada, ella me dijo que existía una necesidad de que hubiera un área donde las personas pudieran sentarse tranquilamente a leer, estudiar o utilizar el WIFI de la biblioteca (el cual es gratuito) sin tener que permanecer en el suelo o en sus vehículos luego de que la biblioteca estuviera cerrada. Bueno, la necesidad fue escuchada y se ve hermosa la transformación. Además de la remodelación en la entrada, el Municipio de Rincón realizo una inversión en libros nuevos los cuales complementan las colecciones ya existentes. No cabe duda, las bibliotecas son centros de aprendizaje importantísimos para cualquier comunidad. La Biblioteca Municipal Luis Muñoz Marín de Rincón, opera de lunes a jueves de 8am a 9pm con recesos de 12:00pm-12:30pm y de 5:30pm-6:30pm, y viernes de 8am a 5:30pm sin recesos.

Is Rincón Ready for Tourism(?): Readers Respond ¿Está Rincón preparado para el turismo?: La respuesta de los lectores Written by Mark Okrant / Translation by Cristina Nieves In the November 2015 issue of El Coqui of Rincon, I asked the question: is Rincón ready for tourism? Responses were invited using direct email or a face-to-face survey. Respondents rated ten attributes using the following scale: 5 (excellent) to 1 (poor), where 3 is average. Further comments also were invited. Here are the results. About the respondents: • 80% make their permanent residence in cold weather US states • 20% live in southern US states • 50% were visiting or had recently visited for the first time • among prior visitors, all had visited Rincon at least 5 times The ratings (see the November 2015 edition of El Coqui for explanations): Rincon received its highest ratings on local hospitality (4.8 on a 5 scale), variety of accommodations (4.8), availability of basic travel services (4.6), and authenticity (4.5). Lowest ratings were given to Rincón’s marketing effectiveness (3.4), points of entry (3.5), local government support for tourism (3.6), image projected by the community’s center (3.8), and local tourism industry cooperation (3.9). [Note: it must be stated here that 20 percent of respondents did not rate either the government support or the industry cooperation items.]

What did respondents say about Rincon?:

It is apparent that visitors are enamored with Rincón, and take pride and pleasure in the fact that they vacation here. In considering the strategically important points of entry, Kyle from Long Island (NY) indicated that the approach from the north is “awesome.” Several respondents pointed out that the area’s roads are “generally free of debris.” Sheila and Howard from West Hartford (CT) noted that the community center has “charm, with multiple interesting businesses, especially those focused upon arts and handicrafts.” However, several respondents noted that the center seems a bit run down in places, and Kristin (WI) stated it “needs a coat of paint.” Page 38

This is a meaningful finding, as these are attributes that are coveted by today’s travelers, especially those with the means to take longer vacations while looking for memorable experiences. Andrew from Loudon (NH) described the people of Rincón and Puerto Rico as a whole as, “extraordinarily kind and helpful.”

In terms of the variety of accommodations offered, visitors were extremely pleased that Rincón lacks the large-scale, all-inclusive resorts which are characteristic of other parts of the Caribbean. The community offers lodgings and restaurants that satisfy a remarkable range of tastes and bank accounts.

In evaluating Rincón’s range of attractions, it is not surprising that respondents focused upon the area’s surf, beaches, and other natural attractions. As Joseph of Harwich (MA) stated, “area activities favor Millennials (born between 1978-1998) and Gen Xers (born between 1965-1977).” Some felt that cultural/historic attractions are lacking, and Rincón “could use a small movie house or a larger culture center.”

Several respondents directed their comments toward marketing effectiveness and how the government and tourism industry are functioning together. Kristin felt that the marketing she has seen presented Rincón as a “surfing town” only. She also bemoaned the difficulty of finding tourism information when entering Rincón for the first time. Sheila and Howard felt that El Coqui provides a great start, but the “tourism community could be doing much more.” Mike from Remsen (NY) concurred, stating, “I haven’t seen very much marketing (of Rincón) as a tourism destination.” To summarize respondents’ reactions: they love Rincón— its “off-the-beaten-path” feel, the preponderance of local artisans, and the fact that it does not have the atmosphere of a resort town. It is apparent, to an overwhelming degree, Rincón IS doing a very effective job of hosting tourism. Some cosmetic fixes may be in order, but they are minor. Acknowledged parking and traffic issues are characteristic of communities throughout the Caribbean. The contemporary traveler is very sophisticated. And this group of respondents recognized the need for a coordinated effort to plan, develop, and market tourism. Only through such actions will Rincón be able to sustain both a flow of visitors and the future well-being of the community itself. Problemas con el tráfico y con el estacionamiento son reconocidos a través de todo el Caribe. Los viajeros contemporáneos son muy sofisticados. Y este grupo de personas que respondió a las preguntas reconocieron la necesidad de un esfuerzo coordinado para organizar, desarrollar, y mercadear el turismo. Solamente a través de dichas acciones es que Rincón podrá sustentar tanto el flujo de visitantes como el bienestar futuro de la comunidad rincoeña. Birds of Rincón Story & Photos by Sandra Ríos The snowy egret is a small white heron (Egretta thula) usually 2028” (51-71cm) long. In Spanish, they are called “garza blanca.” They are often seen wading along the shoreline around Rincón’s beaches. In the 19th century, the soft filmy, curving feathers of breeding snowy egrets used to be in great demand in the fashion industry causing the species to be in danger of extinction. Conservationists acted to protect egrets in the early 20th century, and this species is once again a common sight in shallow coastal areas. La garza blanca es una pequeña ave (Egretta thula) usualmente 20-28” (51-71cm) de longitud. En inglés es conocida como “Snowy Egret.” Son usualmente vistas vadeando por las costas de las playas rincoeñas. It sounds like a little squeak toy and can often be seen pecking at trees and telephone poles throughout Rincón. These small birds measure 9-10.5” (2327cm). It is a nest predator, eating the eggs and young of other birds and also a competitor for nest sites. It has been called an “intrepid poacher” and partially blamed for the depleted faunas on numerous Caribbean islands. El zorzal pardo (Margarops fuscatus) llamado en inglés “PearlyEyed Thrasher” usualmente mide de 11-12” (28-30cm). Sus partes superiores son de color marrón mientras que sus partes inferiores son de un color blanco rayado y marrón. Es un depredador de nidos comiéndose los huevos y las crías de otras aves. Además, es un ávido competidor por lugares donde anidar. Han sido llamados “cazadores intrépidos” y son parcialmente culpados por la empobrecida fauna de muchas de las islas en el Caribe.

Those were our thoughts in February 2011 when we decided to begin the adventure of establishing a real estate office in downtown Rincón, the town we had chosen to be our home.

Comienzo de año; momento de nuevas metas y proyectos… Así pensábamos en febrero de 2011 cuando decidimos lanzarnos a la aventura de establecer una oficina de bienes raíces en el pueblo que habíamos elegido como nuestro hogar.

Lino got his license in 1989 and worked for various agencies in San Juan before establishing his own firm in Arecibo in 2001. We both started working the business together as I also got my broker’s license in 2006.

Lino obtuvo su Licencia de Corredor en 1989 y trabajó en varias agencias en San Juan antes de establecer su propia firma en Arecibo en 2001. Ambos comenzamos a trabajar el negocio juntos al yo obtener mi Licencia de Corredora en el 2006.

By that time we had become “empty nesters,” because our sons had left home and we wanted a change in lifestyle. This happened at the same time that my brother bought an apartment in Rincón to spend family vacations. We started visiting Rincón regularly, and by 2007 we had bought our own studio apartment next to Villa Cofresi. Our problem was that our weekends were starting on Wednesdays! By 2008, we bought a house with the intention of using it for vacation rentals but instead in 2009, we moved permanently to Rincón. We had fallen under this peaceful town’s magic spell with its beautiful scenery, quality of its people and its fascinating combination of local and foreign cultures.

Para ese momento nos habíamos convertido en “empty nesters”, pues nuestros hijos se habían marchado de casa y deseábamos un cambio en nuestro estilo de vida. Esto coincidió con que mi hermano había comprado un apartamento en Rincón para vacacionar. Comenzamos a venir regularmente y para el 2007 habíamos comprado un apartamento estudio al lado de Villa Cofresi. El problema era que nuestros fines de semana ¡comenzaban desde los miércoles! Para el 2008 compramos una casa con la intención de usarla para rentas vacacionales pero en su lugar en el 2009 nos mudamos permanentemente a Rincón. Habíamos caído rendidos al encanto mágico de este pueblo tranquilo con sus hermosos paisajes, la calidad de gente y con su combinación fascinante de cultura local y extranjera.

At first, we started working from home but soon decided to open an office at our current location at Sol Street #4A in Rincon. We were here to stay! This February 2016, we celebrate our fith anniversary! of having established Lino Feliciano Real Estate in Rincón, and we couldn’t feel happier and honored of this achieved goal and professional milestone. If success in our industry is measured by attractive listings and their subsequent sales, then we have been successful. New listings of amazing properties motivate us to continue giving the best of ourselves. But perhaps our greatest success has been the large quantity of collaborators and clients that have become part of our family, the many local and foreign friends that make us feel part of this community, the quality of life that we treasure more every passing day and the luxury of witnessing amazing sunsets in a place without comparison.
