Welcome I would like to welcome everyone to our December issue. We’re sticking with the tradition of buying local this holiday season. Our feature story for this month focuses on local shops in Rincón. It was so much fun working on this story. Visiting shops, chatting with the owners and photographing cute gift items. There are many great gifts available right now in Rincón, no need to look elsewhere. I’m keeping this welcome short and sweet. Bienvenido Me gustaría darles la bienvenida a todos a nuestra edición de diciembre. Permanecemos con la tradición de comprar localmente durante la temporada navideña. Nuestro artículo principal este mes se enfoca en las tiendas locales de Rincón. Fue muy divertido trabajar en esta historia. Visitar las tiendas, conversar con los propietarios y fotografiar adorables artículos que son regalos ideales. Yobián Chaparro Feneque is a young artist that resides in Bo. Calvache of Rincón. At a young age, he began drawing cartoons, he later moved on to other subjects that caught his attention in the world around him. He was a student at the high school in Rincón, where he was able to exhibit his work in locations where other students could enjoy his talent, such as the library. Later he studied art at CABA in Aguadilla with a concentration in Visual Arts. He began drawing with basic lead pencils, then moved on to colored pencils until finally integrating acrylics into his art. His drawing of the three kings was created with colored pencils and was inspired by his excitement and anticipation of the special holiday and the special gift he would receive. He has had the opportunity to create unique portraits of several people’s pets, immortalizing them through his art. The portrait of the rooster was created for the young girl Ashley Marie González Carrerro. Currently, Jobian is working on perfecting his new hobby, photography. Yobián Chaparro Feneque reside en el barrio Calvache de Rincón. Desde una temprana edad comenzó a dibujar animaciones, posteriormente comenzó a dibujar cualquier otra cosa que le llamara la atención del mundo que le rodeaba. Estudió arte en la escuela CABA de Aguadilla, con una concentración en artes visuales. A su vez era estudiante en la escuela superior de Rincón, donde tuvo la oportunidad de exhibir sus obras en localidades donde otros estudiantes pudieran disfrutarlas como la biblioteca del plantel. Comenzó a dibujar utilizando los lápices de plomo, luego se movió hacia los lápices de colores hasta que finalmente integro las acuarelas a sus obras de arte. Su dibujo de los tres reyes magos fue creado con lápices de colores. El mismo está inspirado por la emoción y la anticipación de ese hermoso y especial día festivo y los maravillosos regalos que recibiría ese día. Ha tenido la oportunidad de crear retratos únicos de las mascotas de varias personas, inmortalizándolos a través de su arte. El retrato del gallo fue creado para la joven Ashley Marie González Carrero. Actualmente, Yobián está trabajando en perfeccionar su nuevo pasatiempo, la fotografía. An interview with Sandra Nía Rodríguez

Sandra: Innocent or guilty? Everyone: Guilty! Sandra: Innocent or guilty? Everyone: Guilty! This was the response of the students from the school Aquilino Cabán in Aguada when they were asked to come up with a verdict for the case of “Rosalinda vs. Mrs. Popoff” presented in the style of the famous court TV program “Caso Cerrado”. Very seriously, the young students playing the jury, voted in favor of the incarceration and fining of Mrs. Popoff, accused of mistreating her dog Rosalinda, her cat Fifi, and her 560 ½ kittens. The young judge, played by a student, tried to impose order upon the heated expressions of indignation from the presenters. The plaintiff: Rosalinda, a dog and co-plaintiff, Fifi the cat, plead their case before the jury of students. The witnesses: La Yerba Bruja (Witches Herb), the bunny, and Ms. Spider (also played by students), acted as witnesses and pointed their accusatory fingers towards the elegant and arrogant Mrs. Popoff, also played by one of the students, who clamed innocence due to the fact that animals “neither feel nor suffer.” This is the interactive workshop “Rosalinda goes to court,” that Sandra Nía Rodríguez has presented voluntarily for several years in elementary schools in the western area of Puerto Rico. El Coqui: Where did the idea for the workshop come from? SNR: In 2010 Mrs. Sheree Salas, who at the time was the administrator for the Animal Rescue Foundation of Rincón (ARF), had asked me to help a member of their board of directors deliver a presentation at a school in Rincón. Having been an actress and director in educational theater, I had experience designing workshops utilizing the arts, especially theater. I immediately began creating a story line and characters. I looked for costumes in my many theater trunks and soon presented the first version of “Rosalinda goes to court” which at the time had a Page 12

Popoff” presentado al estilo del famoso programa televisivo de tribunales “Caso Cerrado”. Muy seriamente, los jóvenes miembros del jurado se expresaron a favor de la encarcelación y multa de la Sra. Popoff, acusada del maltrato de su perrita Rosalinda, su gatita Fifí y sus 560 ½ gatitos. La Srta. Juez, interpretada por una estudiante, trata de imponer el orden ante las tan airadas expresiones de indignación de los presentes. La demandante: La perrita Rosalinda y co-demandante La Gatita Fifí, declararon ante el jurado compuesto por todos los estudiantes. Los testigos: la planta de Bruja, el Conejito y la Srta. Araña (también estudiantes), fungieron como testigos y señalaron su dedo acusatorio hacia la elegante y arrogante Sra. Popoff, también interpretada por una de las estudiantes, quién alegaba inocencia ya que los animales “ni sienten, ni padecen.” Este es el taller interactivo “Rosalinda va a la corte” que por ya varios años Sandra Nía Rodríguez lleva impartiendo voluntariamente en escuelas elementales del área oeste. El Coquí: ¿Cómo surge la idea de este taller? SNR: En el 2010 la Sra. Sheree Salas, en ese momento administradora del Animal Rescue Foundation de Rincón, (ARF) me pidió acompañara a un miembro de su junta de directores a presentar una charla en una escuela en Rincón. Como actriz y directora de teatro con especialidad en teatro educativo, yo tenía experiencia diseñando talleres educativos utilizando las artes, especialmente el teatro. El Coqui: What are the main themes presented in the workshop? SNR: In the workshop we present the concept of laws and regulations at home and in a country, the purpose of laws, and the most important points of Law 154 for the Protection of Animals. We discuss the responsibilities of a pet owner, things one should never do to a pet, the legal consequences for those who violate the law and the consequences the animals suffer because of them. El Coqui: How many people present the workshop?

SNR: En el taller presentamos el concepto de las leyes y las reglas tanto en el hogar como en un país, el propósito de las leyes y los puntos más importantes de la Ley 154 para la protección de los animales. Discutimos cuáles son las responsabilidades de un amo para su mascota, las cosas que no se le deben hacer a una mascota, y por último, las consecuencias legales para los amos que violen la ley, y las consecuencias para los animales víctimas de ello. El Coquí: ¿Cuántas personas presentan el taller?
SNR: Only me. I play various characters, which, throughout the story I delegate to the students, and at the same time facilitate the discussion utilizing educational theater techniques.
SNR: Yo sola. Interpreto varios de los personajes, los cuales luego delego en los estudiantes, y a la misma vez facilito la discusión utilizando técnicas del teatro educativo.
El Coqui: What makes your workshop different from a conventional speech or presentation?
El Coquí: ¿Qué hace a tu taller diferente de una charla convencional?
SNR: My workshop presents these topics in an entertaining fashion. It’s important to create and environment where the participants can easily process the information, express their opinions in a judgment-free environment, come to their own conclusions about the situation, and make their own decisions about the consequences that each situation may carry. I do not preach. The information and situation is presented to them and they can make the final decisions.
SNR: El taller presenta la información de forma entretenida. Es muy importante crear un ambiente en el que los participantes puedan procesar fácilmente dicha información, puedan expresar sus opiniones en un ambiente libre de juicio, puedan derivar sus propias conclusiones de la situación y puedan tomar decisiones sobre las consecuencias que amerite dicha situación. No se predica. Solo se expone la información y la situación, y ellos toman las decisiones finales. Page 13
El Coqui: What do you mean by “judgment-free?” SNR: I never try to make anyone feel they are right or wrong. For example, occasionally a student may disclose something about their pet that may be considered as abuse. I try to make it so that no one makes them feel bad. We use the list of responsibilities of a pet owner we had created during the discussion, to provide them with the correct information, so they can take it back home and share it with their family. El Coqui: What are the short-term benefits of the workshops? SNR: We want students to learn about Law 154 for the Protection of Animals. We also want them to understand the responsibilities of a pet owner, to be able to make a distinction between correct and incorrect behavior towards an animal, which type of behavior is considered a violation of the law, and the existing penalties. El Coqui: What are the long-term benefits of the workshops? SNR: We would like to cultivate a generation that from an early age has developed compassion and awareness about the rights of animals. Help them identify abusive behavior, understand the causes of the problem of stray animals, and where it begins. Nurture adults that are compassionate and can become future advocates towards the rights of animals. El Coqui: Are there any other activities related to the workshops? SNR: Usually the teachers prepare the students with material related to the rights of animals. After the workshop some classes write or create drawings based on what they have learned. El Coqui: Who is eligible to receive this workshop? SNR: This workshop is offered free of cost to elementary schools, churches, summer camps, and community centers. We focus on grades 2nd to 6th. We ask the participants to donate food and other items for dogs and cats. You can get in touch with me at 787-560-9988. El Coquí: ¿Qué quieres decir con “libre de juicio”? SNR: Trato de que nunca se le haga sentir a nadie que está incorrecto/a. Por ejemplo, a veces un estudiante expresa algo sobre su mascota que podría ser considerado como abuso. Yo trato de que nadie lo haga sentir mal. Utilizando la lista que desarrollamos en la discusión sobre los deberes de los amos, le ofrecemos la información para que la comparta en su hogar. El Coquí: ¿Cuáles serían los beneficios a corto plazo de los talleres? SNR: Que los participantes conozcan sobre la Ley 154 para la Protección de los Animales. Que entiendan las responsabilidades de un amo/a para su mascota. Que conozcan que tipo de comportamiento hacia una mascota es incorrecto, cuáles de ellos son delito ante la ley y el tipo de penalidades existentes. El Coquí: ¿Cuáles serían los beneficios a largo plazo de los talleres? SNR: Desarrollar desde temprana edad una cultura de compasión y conciencia sobre los derechos de los animales. Ayudarles a identificar el abuso. Ayudarles a entender el porqué del problema de los animales en las calles y cómo surge. Formar adultos compasivos y defensores de los derechos de los animales. El Coquí: ¿Hay alguna otra actividad relacionada a los talleres? SNR: Usualmente los maestros preparan a los niños con material relacionado a los derechos de los animales, y después de la charla, algunas clases escriben composiciones y dibujos. El Coquíi: ¿Quién puede recibir este taller? SNR: El taller se ofrece de forma gratuita a escuelas elementales, iglesias, campamentos de verano, centros comunales. La población es de 2do a 6to grado. Se le pide que los participantes donen comida o efectos para mascotas (gatos y perros). Me pueden llamar al 787560-9988. Dada la limitación de mi tiempo solo puedo ofrecer un número limitado de talleres al mes.
El Coqui: What can the community do to help? SNR: In the case of children, they can bring food for dogs and cats to the workshop that will later be distributed to the local animal rescue groups. Community members can volunteer with any of the local animal rescue groups or make monetary donations to help these organizations. Birds of Rincón Aves de Rincón Story & photos by Sandra Ríos Rincon has a wide variety of birds ranging from pigeons and doves to the critically endangered yellow-shouldered blackbird. Birds are all around us, and often we don’t see them or take them for granted. Seabirds such as the brown pelican are always visible during the mornings soaring over, diving into, and floating on the water at the Balneario Público de Rincón. The magnificent frigatebird is often seen flying overhead along the coastlines during stormy weather. Sandpipers and herons can be seen wading in the shallow coastal waters between the Balneario and El Faro. Snowy egrets, doves, woodpeckers, thrashers, blackbirds, kingfishers, falcons, and hawks are only a few of the birds visible in trees, roadside bushes, and grassy fields all around the municipality of Rincón. Falcons often perch on electric lines. Every month, El Coqui of Rincón is going to feature a couple of birds so that both residents and tourists alike can appreciate the diversity of birds that can be found in Rincón. The white-winged dove (zenaida asiatica) is common throughout Puerto Rico. It is also common throughout the Southwestern United States, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. It is a largish bird at around 11 inches and are brownish-gray with a bold white wing patch that is visible in flight and at rest. Adults have a patch of sky-blue, featherless skin around each eye, and their eyes are bright crimson. They can often be seen feeding on seeds in the road, resting on telephone lines, and perched on rocks. This dove was photographed in Atalaya, Rincón in October 2015. The yellow-shouldered blackbird (agelaius xanthomus) commonly known as the “mariquita” was once common throughout Puerto Rico. Page 32
Rincón posee una extensa variedad de aves, la cual va desde las comunes palomas hasta la críticamente amenazada mariquita de Puerto Rico. Las aves se encuentran a nuestro alrededor, y muchas veces nosotros no las vemos o subestimamos su presencia. Aves marinas tales como el pelicano pargo son siempre visibles durante las crecientes mañanas. Estos son vistos zambulléndose y flotando sobre el agua en el Balneario Público de Rincón. La fragata magnifica o fragata real es usualmente vista sobrevolando a lo largo de la costa durante los días tormentosos. Los playeritos y las garzas pueden ser vistos vadeando en las aguas llanas de la costa entre el Balneario y el Faro. Garzas blancas, palomas, pájaros carpinteros, cuitlacoches rojizos, mirlos, martín pescadores, falcones y águilas son sólo algunas de las aves visibles en los árboles, los arbustos junto a las carreteras y los campos verdes a través del municipio de Rincón. Los falcones usualmente se posan en las líneas eléctricas. Cada mes, El Coqui of Rincón va a presentarles varias aves para que tanto los residentes como los turistas puedan apreciar la gran diversidad de pájaros que pueden ser encontrados en Rincón. La paloma de ala blanca (Zenaida asiática) es común a lo largo de todo Puerto Rico. También es común en el sur-oeste de los Estados Unidos, Méjico, Centro America, y el Caribe. Es un pájaro bastante grande midiendo alrededor de 11 pulgadas, además, es de un color entre marrón y gris y posee un marcado parcho blanco en su ala el cual es visible mientras vuela y cuando está en reposo. Los adultos tienen un parcho sin plumas de color azul cielo alrededor de sus ojos, los cuales son de un color carmesí brillante. Pueden ser vistos alimentándose de semillas en las carreteras, descansando en las líneas telefónicas

The shiny cowbird lays its eggs in the nests of the yellowshouldered blackbird, reducing the number of blackbirds that survive into adulthood. Luckily, the yellow-shouldered blackbird can survive in many different habitats including suburbs, towns, coastal areas,and the cliffs of Mona Island. The yellowshouldered blackbird can also be found in the hills of Rincón. This pair of Yellow-shouldered blackbirds was photographed in Atalaya, Rincón in September 2015.

La mariquita de Puerto Rico o capitán (Agelaius xanthomus), en algún momento fue un ave muy común en Puerto Rico. Actualmente, la mariquita está considerada en un crítico estado de amenaza debido a un parasito de cría llamado Tordo Renegrido (Molothrus bonariensis). El tordo renegrido pone sus huevos en los nidos de los capitanes reduciendo así el número de estos que logra llegar a la adultez. Afortunadamente, la mariquita de Puerto Rico puede sobrevivir en diversos ambientes incluyendo suburbios, pueblos, áreas costeras, y los acantilados en la Isla de Mona entre otros. La mariquita también puede encontrarse en las colinas de Rincón. Este par de capitanes fueron fotografiados en Atalaya, Rincón en septiembre del 2015.

November 1st 2015 marked the second Halloween costume surf contest in Rincón, PR. Ron Ditmore, photographer and artist, created this event because he believed it would be a fun activity for the community, and he was right! For those who don’t know Ron, he runs the popular Facebook page Rincon Surf Photos where he posts surf photos after each swell. The winners are chosen based on the amount of likes they receive for their photos on Ron’s page. We hope that in the future, this event gains even more popularity and becomes a new tradition. Below we have included photos from this year’s contest. Enjoy!

El primero de noviembre del 2015 marca el segundo torneo de surfing celebrado en Rincón, Puerto Rico donde todos deben disfrazarse para celebrar Halloween. Ron Ditmore, fotógrafo y artista, creo este evento porque él creía que sería una actividad divertida para el disfrute de la comunidad. ¡Tenía razón! Para aquellos que no conocen a Ron, el maneja la popular página de Facebook, Rincón Surf Photography donde él publica fotos de surfing luego de cada marejada. Los ganadores son elegidos de acuerdo a la cantidad de “me gusta” que ellos reciben por sus fotos en la página de Ron. For those who are curious Para aquellos que son curiosos Written by Andrea Greve So, there’s been a lot of movement going on in Rincón these past few months real-estate wise, especially in the downtown area. I was very curious due to the fact that I have been searching for an office for El Coqui in a central location for the past few months. Many already know we had been trying to buy the two story building in-between Rincon Beer Co & the bakery on the corner. However, it was not our fate. I would like to congratulate the new owners, it’s a great piece of property. I have heard rumors of who the buyers are but couldn’t get a confirmation.
Al parecer, ha habido mucho movimiento en Rincón en lo que a bienes raíces se refiere, especialmente en el área del casco urbano. Yo me encontraba muy curiosa ya que por varios meses había estado buscando una oficina para El Coqui la cual se ubicara en una localización céntrica. Muchos ya sabes que habíamos estado tratando de comprar el edificio de dos plantas que se encuentra entre el Rincón Beer Co. y la panadería de la esquina. Sin embargo, ese no era nuestro destino. Me gustaría felicitar a los nuevos propietarios, es una gran propiedad. He escuchado rumores de quienes son los dueños pero no he podido recibir confirmaciones.
There has been a surge of properties for sale and new businesses popping up in town. The old Cash and Carry supermarket is now for sale. It’s a large piece of property, and I heard it comes with a large price tag. The bakery on the corner across from the jewelry store Joyeria Don Pepon is fore sale. They are actually offering some interesting options, you have the choice of buying the business and renting the property or flat-out buying the property. You can view prices on J&M Realty’s ad on page 59.

Es una propiedad bastante grande y escuche que viene acompañada de un gran costo. La panadería de la esquina al cruzar de la Joyería Don Pepón también está a la venta. La verdad es que están ofreciendo unas opciones muy interesantes, se tiene la opción de comprar el negocio y rentar la propiedad o comprar la propiedad de una. There is a two-story building behind the Catholic church, next to The Uncharted Studio. This property is being managed by Lino Feliciando Real Estate. Further down on rd 115 on the corner next to Dulcis Vita and Ocean State of Mind, there is another large two-story property for sale. Its been there for a while too. If I’m not mistaken, the property belongs to an older couple that have lived in Rincón a very long time.

New businesses are also popping up in the downtown area. The old Pancho Villa Mexican restaurant is being converted to Cafe 413. Coowner Waleska Sallaberry was able to share the following information with us about Cafe 413:

Turn at the jewelry store on the corner of rd. Calle Comercio #14 and you will find a new breakfast spot during the day and craft beer bar at night, La Casa D’. They serve breakfast all day, lunch, brunch and dinner. You can view their ad on page 27. A new gym is opening right next to the Alcaldia de Rincón. Owners Mike Pastor and Marisa Hughes decided to move their business, Rincón Movement Academy, from Harbor Village to the Rincón Plaza. When I asked Mike why he wanted to make the move to the plaza, this is what he had to say: “We wanted to start small and get to know the community as well as the community getting to know us. We decided it was time to move into a larger location because we have so many things we have been trained to teach that the smaller space wouldn’t allow.” Behind the old West Coast Surf Shop, there is a new tattoo studio, The Kraken, owned and managed by artist Greg Hastain. The office for Rincón Images is soon to come in the same space. Wedding photographer Frances Davis is excited about working with the space; she told El Coqui there will a gallery and gift shop in addition to her photography studio and Greg’s tattoo studio.

Un nuevo gimnasio está abriendo sus puertas junto a la Alcaldía de Rincón. Cuando le pregunte a Mike por qué deseaba hacer el cambio hacia la plaza, esto fue lo que él me respondió: “Queríamos comenzar poco a poco para así poder conocer la comunidad y que la comunidad nos conociera a nosotros. Decidimos que ya era el momento de mudarnos a un local más grande porque tenemos tanto para lo que fuimos entrenados a enseñar que una localidad pequeña no nos permite enseñarlo.” Detrás del antiguo West Coast Surf Shop hay un nuevo estudio de tatuajes, The Kraken, manejado por su propietario y artista Greg Hastain. Prontamente en el mismo lugar se abrirán las oficinas de Rincón Images. La fotógrafa de bodas Frances Davis, está muy emocionada de poder trabajar en ese espacio, ella le dijo a El Coqui que deseaban abrir una galería y una tienda de regalos además de su estudio fotográfico y el estudio de tatuajes de Greg.
