“Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson I have opened this issue of El Coqui of Rincón with a quote by the famous American author, Ralph Waldo Emerson. I believe it to be quite symbolic and motivational given the current situation that Rincón and the island of Puerto Rico is facing after the passing of hurricane Maria. Hurricane Maria, a category 4-5 hurricane, depending on what part of the island was hit, completely devastated the already fragile economy and infrastructure of the island of Puerto Rico. The entire island was left without power and water and a great majority of the island still remains this way over two months later. However, the island is little by little rising up. Everywhere you go, the spirit of the community is in full force, Puerto Rican flags adorn cars and businesses, and on the radio and on the street you constantly hear the quote, “Puerto Rico se levanta (Puerto Rico Rise Up).” Power and water is returning and most businesses have once more opened their doors. Here in Rincón, we are very lucky. Most of the damage occurred to vegetation. Power and water has now been restored to a great majority of the town. Our community has truly proven its excellence by coming together and helping others in need. Our beaches are as beautiful as ever, and little by little, things will return to normal. I did not wish to dedicate this entire issue of El Coqui to Maria: however, most of the stories in this month’s publication pay homage to those who have dedicated their time and energy to the community. Puerto Rico is not only blessed by being a land of beauty, but also by the resilience, charity, and great humanity of its people. Little by little….Puerto Rico y Rincón se levantan!
He abierto esta edición de El Coquí of Rincón con una cita del famoso autor Americano, Ralph Waldo Emerson. Creo que es bastante simbólico y motivador dada la situación actual de Rincón y la isla de Puerto Rico después del paso del huracán María. Huracán María, huracán categoría 4 ó 5, dependiendo por que parte de la isla fue golpeada, completamente devastada la economía, y la infraestructura ya frágil de la isla de Puerto Rico. La isla completa se quedo sin electricidad y agua, y todavía la mayor parte de ella se mantiene así, a más de dos meses después. Sin embargo la isla se está levantando poco a poco. A donde quiera que vas, el espíritu de las comunidades están en plena vigencia, la bandera de Puerto Rico adorna los autos y los comercios, y en la radio y en las calles puedes escuchar constantemente el lema, “Puerto Rico se levanta.” La electricidad y el agua están volviendo y la mayoría de las empresas, una vez más han abierto sus puertas. Aquí en Rincón, hemos sido afortunados. La mayor parte del daño ocurrió a la vegetación. La electricidad y el agua han sido restauradas a la mayor parte del pueblo. Nuestra comunidad realmente ha demostrado su excelencia al unirse y ayudar a otros que lo necesitan. Nuestras playas están hermosas como siempre, y poco a poco, todo está volviendo a su normalidad. Mi deseo no era dedicar esta edición del El Coquí, enteramente a María: sin embargo, la mayoría de las historias en la publicación de este mes, rinden homenaje a quienes han dedicado su tiempo y energía a ayudar a la comunidad. Puerto Rico no solo es bendecido por ser una tierra de belleza, sino también por la capacidad de recuperación, caridad y la gran humanidad de su gente. ¡Poco a poco…..Puerto Rico y Rincón se levantan!

effrey Mercado Caban was born and raised in Puerto Rico and currently lives in the Rincón, the town of beautiful sunsets. He began to show interest in drawing when he was 5 years old. At 9 years old, he started taking art classes. He developed his talent through different professors that surrounded his life during his artistic growth. He stood out as an art student at C.A.B.A. in Aguadilla and was named their Artist of Excellence. He remained there as a collaborating tutor for several years. There, together with other colleagues, they exhibited in Telemundo Gallery, in Vieques and at different town halls of the island.

effrey Mercado Cabán es nacido y criado en Puerto Rico. Actualmente procedente del pueblo de los bellos atardeceres, Rincón. Comenzó a mostrar interés por el dibujo desde los 5 años. A los 9 años comenzó a tomar clases de arte. Desarrollando su talento mediante distintos profesores que rodearon su vida durante su crecimiento artístico. Se destacó como estudiante de arte en C.A.B.A aguadilla y al ser nombrado el artista de excelencia. Se mantuvo varios años como tutor colaborador. Allí junto con otros compañeros realizó exposiciones en la Galería de Telemundo, en Vieques y en diferentes alcaldías de la isla.
Jeffrey works as a muralist painter in the municipal government of Rincón. He has been creating murals for 12 years and embellishing the town that saw him grow and develop as a humble painter with good morals. He has had the opportunity to exhibit his works through collective exhibitions with different artists from the western area, participating in two nonprofit organizations like JUNTARTE in Rincón and with the organization PINTAA that promotes local artists to develop professionally. His art is directed towards photorealism and his aspiration is to reach the essential hyperrealism of an artistic work.
Jeffrey trabaja como pintor muralista en el gobierno municipal de Rincón. Lleva doce años creando murales y embelleciendo su pueblo que le vio crecer y desarrollarse como un pintor humilde y de buena moral. Tuvo la oportunidad de exponer sus obras mediante exhibiciones colectivas con diferentes artistas del área oeste. Participando en dos organizaciones sin fines de lucro como JUNTARTE en Rincón y con la organización PINTAA que promovía artistas locales a desarrollarse profesionalmente. Su arte es dirigido hacia la foto realismo y su aspiración es llegar al hiperrealismo esencial de una obra artística.
Jeffrey is a local artist well known as the creator of the famous sea wall mural, in Ventana al Mar, of the big whale that highlights highway 115 in Rincon. He is also currently appreciated for his mural in the neighborhood of Corcega, with his recent murals entitled “Hogar es donde pertenece tu Corazon” (“Home is where your heart belongs.”), that highlights the figure of a large hand with a seagull holding the Rincón flag in its beak.
Jeffrey es un artista local muy conocido como el creador del antes famoso mural de ventana al mar de la ballena grande que resaltaba la carretera 115 del pueblo de Rincón y actualmente es también apreciado por su mural en barrio Córcega donde está su mural más reciente titulado “Hogar es donde pertenece tu corazón”. Que resalta la figura de una mano grande con una gaviota sosteniendo la bandera de Rincón en su pico.
Jeffrey’s longing has always been that everyone can appreciate and value the simplicity and details of his work with the same virtue with which art is expressed in the world. His plan is to always carry a positive and inspiring and encouraging message to people who can enjoy rich and bright colors and identify with every brushstroke that Jeffrey adds to his artistic work.
El anhelo de jeffrey siempre ha sido que todos puedan apreciar y valorar la simpleza y los detalles de su obra con la misma virtud con la que se expresa el arte en todo el mundo. owling wind that exceeded 150 mph, branches being torn from trees, pouring rain, roots lifted from the soil, and zinc and wood blown from homes! Unfortunately, this is what Hurricane Maria brought upon the island of Puerto Rico.
os aullidos del viento excedían los 150 mph, ramas arrancadas de los arboles, lluvia torrencial, raíces levantadas del suelo, planchas de zinc y madera volaban de las casas. Desafortunadamente esto fue lo que trajo el huracán María a la isla de Puerto Rico.
For Mike Falcone and Deshawn Sargent, living through a category five hurricane-and even worse, the aftermath of a category five hurricane- was something they had never imagined. The morning of September 21, 2017, they awoke to scenery completely different from that which they’d left almost two days before. Hurricane Maria had taken a terrible toll on the vegetation and infrastructure in Rincón. Their first instinct was to head over to the town plaza and check on RBC (Rincón Beer Company). A tree had fallen over the door, the first of many they would clear during the weeks to come.

La mañana del 21 de septiembre de 2017, despertaron a un escenario completamente diferente a lo que habían dejado solamente dos días antes. Huracán María había devastado la vegetación y la infraestructura de Rincon. Su primer impulso fue llegar a la plaza del pueblo donde está ubicada RBC (Rincon Beer Company) y verificar los daños. Había caído un árbol sobre la puerta, uno de los primeros que ellos levantarían durante las siguientes semanas.

Luckily, RBC had an electric generator that provided them with internet service. This was vital for many who wanted to communicate with friends and family outside of Puerto Rico. Concerned townspeople began to come to RBC to attempt to connect with the outer world. Mike and Deshawn soon placed a memo board where messages could be left. From then on, more and more citizens came to them with problems, many of which they were easily able to resolve. According to Deshawn- “that’s when we realized; wow, we are actually really good at helping people!” After a week of clearing roads with the municipality of Rincón, they officially opened RBC Maria Relief. They began with the basics: food, clean drinking water, and shelter. They cooked up meals from items that were donated to them and handed out bottles of clean drinking water. Word spread quickly, and more and more donations started coming in. Chefs for Puerto Rico even drove from San Juan to Rincón a week after the hurricane and served 630 hot meals in 30 minutes, along with distributing 20 cases of water. Clean drinking water was a large concern of their relief efforts. It was scarce right after the hurricane, and many were getting sick from drinking un-filtered water. Using the Sawyer system, they established different outposts in different sectors of Rincón. The Sawyer system provides 1 million gallons per filter, bringing plenty of clean drinking water to the community. Each outpost was looked over by a community leader whose job was to spread the word that there was clean filtered drinking water in their area.
Afortunadamente, RBC tenía un generador que proveyó electricidad para conectarse con al servicio de internet. Esto fue vital para todo el que necesitaba comunicarse con sus amigos y familiares fuera de Puerto Rico. Gente del pueblo preocupada comenzó a llegar a RBC para tratar de conectarse con el resto del mundo. Mike y Deshawn proveyeron de una pizarra para que la gente dejara mensajes. Desde ahí comenzó a venir mas y mas gente con sus diferentes problemas, los cuales algunos eran fáciles de resolver. Conforme a Deshawn- “es cuando realizamos: ¡Wow, en realidad somos buenos ayudando a las personas!” Una semana después que despejaran las carreteras de la municipalidad de Rincón, ellos abrieron oficialmente, RBC María Relief. Comenzaron con lo básico: comida, agua limpia para beber, y refugio. Cocinaban comida con productos donados y daban agua embotellada para beber. La voz se extendió rápido y más y más donaciones comenzaron a llegar. “Cocineros por Puerto Rico”, manejaron desde San Juan a Rincon una semana después del huracán y sirvieron 630 comidas calientes en 30 minutos, junto con la distribución de 20 cajas de agua embotellada. Agua limpia era la mayor preocupación de sus esfuerzos. Estaba escasa después del huracán y muchos estaban enfermando por beber agua sin filtros. Usando el sistema Sawyer, establecieron diferentes puestos en diferentes sectores de Rincon. El sistema Sawyer provee 1 millón de galones de agua filtrada, brindando suficiente agua limpia a las diferentes comunidades. Cada puesto estaba supervisado por un líder de la comunidad que su trabajo consistía en difundir por la comunidad que había agua filtrada para beber en el área.

Donations are vital in order to provide their services. Their first big donor of supplies was Patrick Burklew of Florida. He brought in chainsaws, gloves, boots, hardhats and other tools necessary to work on clearing vegetation. They received many medical supply donations such as albuterol, insulin, antibiotics, glucometers, and fever reducers, which were taken to the Costa Salud health facility. They also had a shipment of electric generators come in which they rotated, dependent on peoples needs. One electric generator was given to a 100-year-old woman who has seen both of Puerto Rico’s worst hurricanes. She wanted to stay in her home, and now, the electric generator allows her to live there comfortably and happy. Now, almost two months after Hurricane Maria, Mike and Deshawn are moving from Emergency Mode to Sustainability. First, they are training other relief organizations to follow their model, organizations such as Taina Mia in Aguada and Levantando el Valle in Añasco. Moving their relief efforts to other areas in western Puerto Rico that still need help is also one of their priorities. They are also setting up permanent water filtration systems in establishments such as schools, eliminating the use of plastic bottles, as well as implementing community gardens to encourage healthy eating and sustainability. RBC Maria Relief is now located at the American Legions (across from the state police station), where they have very graciously opened their doors to this tremendous organization. Las donaciones eran vitales en orden de proveer el servicio. Su primer gran donador de productos fue Patrick Burklew de Florida. El trajo; sierras, guantes, botas, capacetes y otras herramientas necesarias para el trabajo de despejar los caminos de la vegetación. Ellos recibieron muchos productos médicos donados como albuterol, insulina, antibióticos, medidores de glucosa y reducidores de fiebre, las cuales fueron a su vez donadas y llevadas a las facilidades de Costa Salud Health. Recibieron un cargamento de generadores de electricidad que fueron rotados, dependiendo de las necesidades de la gente. Uno de los generadores fue dado a una mujer de 100 años que había visto todos los peores huracanes que han azotado a Puerto Rico. Ella prefirió quedarse en su casa y ahora, el generador la deja vivir confortable y feliz. Ahora, casi a dos meses después del Huracán Maria, Mike y Deshawn se han movido de modo de emergencia a sostenibilidad. Primero, están entrenando a otras organizaciones de alivio, a seguir su modelo, como organizaciones como Taina Mia en Aguada y Levantando el Valle, en Añasco. Moviendo sus esfuerzos a otras áreas del oeste de Puerto Rico que todavía necesitan ayuda, es una de sus principales prioridades. También están estableciendo sistemas de filtración de agua en establecimientos como escuelas, eliminando el uso de botellas de plásticos, tanto como implementando jardines comunitarios para alentar a una alimentación saludable y sustentable. Conozcan la historia de Evelyn Díaz Valera... Learn the story of Evelyn Díaz Valera...
Nacida y criada en Nueva York, Estados Unidos. B orn and raised in New York, United States of Actualmente reside en el sector El Viejo Yate de Rincón, America. Currently living in sector El Viejo Yate, Rincón, Puerto Rico. A big part of her life has been dedicated to working in the public sector. Evelyn has worked 16 years at the cemetery in the municipality of Rincón and currently works for the Department of Tourism, surrounded by splendid works and photographs that make up at the Galería de Surfing in Rincón.
Evelyn like all “Rincoeño”, has been shocked and eternally grateful after the passage of hurricane María. She told us where she currently resides was left under water when the canal met the sea, followed by around forty eight (48) fallen trees. This left her neighborhood completly blocked at the time. Even worse, Evelyn and her husband were trapped in their house. During this event, Evelyn, asked God to send angels as help. They did not have the equipment or the machinery necessary to be able to clean or open the way to their surroundings. Those angels arrived, leaving in their wake a great surprise for Evelyn. José Dolores Rivera Moreno, his son, Luis Roberto Rivera, and his family came to the rescue! Neighbors with whom at some time she had differences with. But Evelyn at that moment noticed their goodwill and how God speaks and works through miracles. She never expected their help, they had no reason to. Page 24
Puerto Rico. Gran parte de su vida se ha dedicado a trabajar en el servicio público. Así, dedicándole dieciséis (16) años como cepultera en el cementerio municipal de Rincón. Actualmente, trabaja para el Departamento de Turismo rodeada de espléndidas obras y fotografías que componen la Galería de Surfing en Rincón.
Evelyn, como todo rincoeño, ha sido impactada y eternamente agradecida tras el paso del huracán María. Nos cuenta que el lugar donde actualmente reside quedó bajo agua al juntarse el caño con el mar seguido por alrededor de cuarenta y ocho (48) árboles caídos lo que hizo posible que todos los accesos al sector hayan quedado bloqueados en su momento. Aún peor, ella y su esposo quedaron atrapados en su casa. Durante todo este suceso Evelyn, le pedía a Dios el envío de unos ángeles para su auxilio. No contaban con el equipo ni la maquinaria necesaria para poder limpiar ni abrir paso a sus alrededores. Esos ángeles llegaron dejando a su paso una gran sorpresa para Evelyn. José Dolores Rivera Moreno, su hijo Luis Roberto Rivera y su familia llegaron a su auxilio. Familiares con quienes en algún momento dado tuvo algunas diferencias. Pero Evelyn, en ese momento notó la buena voluntad y como Dios habla y obra a través de milagros y nunca falla a quienes a él aclaman, porque no esperaba su ayuda, no tenían el porqué hacerlo.

I would like to send them many blessings and let them know I am eternally grateful for their work and goodwill.” – Evelyn Undoubtedly the greatest lesson in the wake of Hurricane Maria, for our beloved Evelyn, is that in times of need we must leave all differences aside. As well as bitterness, politics or religion that prevent us from helping our neighbor. We must serve as good children of God. In conclusion to our interview, I asked her what advice or words of encouragement she could offer to the readers of El Coqui. Evelyn thus concluded: “You should trust in God. Dont forget to help those in need and above all forgive our enemies. We do not know when the call of God will come, one day he will be here to judge us.”

Así como las diferencias, el rencor, la amargura, la política o religión que nos impidan ayudar a nuestro prójimo y debemos servir como buenos hijos de Dios. Dado por concluir nuestra entrevista, le preguntamos que consejo o palabras de aliento le brindaba a los lectores. Evelyn así concluyó: “Deben encomendarse a Dios. No olvidarse de ayudar al necesitado y sobretodo perdonar a nuestros enemigos. No sabemos cuando el llamado de Dios llegue y tengamos que rendir cuentas a él.”

Maria’s Surf Wax M
y name is Brooklyn, I’m 9 years old and I live in Rincón, Puerto Rico. On September 20, 2017, Hurricane Maria, a powerful category 4 hurricane with 150 mph winds, made direct landfall, and had a catastrophic effect on the island I’ve called home for three years. I knew I had to help, but didn’t know how, so my mom and dad suggested I make and sell my special all organic vegan surf wax, and donate a portion of my proceeds to different Hurricane Maria relief funds. After doing research and speaking with multiple manufacturing companies, we came up with the perfect product, Maria’s Surf wax, named after Hurricane Maria. My product is the second in the world to be vegan, all organic, bio-degradable, eco-friendly, reef safe, and much more. I want my product to get noticed because I want to help the people of Puerto Rico rebuild, while also helping to keep our oceans, sea life, and environment safe from toxic chemicals. Page 32

i nombre es Brooklyn, tengo 9 años y vivo en Rincón, Puerto Rico. El 20 de septiembre del 2017, el Huracán María, un poderoso huracán categoría 4 con vientos de más de 150 mph, toco tierra directamente y tuvo efectos catastróficos en esta isla que desde hace tres años, llamo mi hogar. Yo sabía que tenía que ayudar pero no sabía cómo, mis padres, me sugirieron que podía confeccionar y vender mi especial cera de surfear vegana orgánica y donar parte de mis ganancias a diferentes fundaciones benéficas del Huracán María. Después de hacer varias investigaciones y hablar con múltiples compañías manufactureras, salimos con el nombre de Maria´s Surf Wax, nombrada por el huracán María. Mi producto vegano, es el segundo en el mundo, todo orgánico, bio-degradable, ecológico, seguro para los arrecifes y mucho más. Yo quiero que mi producto sea notable, porque quiero ayudar a la gente a reconstruir a Puerto Rico, mientras ayudo al océano, la vida marítima y a un medio ambiente seguro sin tóxicos químicos.
Before hurricane Maria made landfall, I had been surfing and skateboarding almost daily. I am also a sailor and I had weekly lessons in a youth sailing program. For a year and a half my parents and I lived on our sailboat in the Caribbean Sea. Since I’ve spent so much time in the water, and also because the ocean was my home for a long time, I know the importance of keeping our oceans safe and using bio-degradable products. We never used any products that would be toxic to sea life or anything that could potentially harm our marine life.
Antes que el huracán María tocara tierra, yo surfeaba y andaba en patineta casi a diario. También soy marinero y tomaba clases semanales en el programa de jóvenes marineros. Por año y medio, mis padres y yo, vivimos en un velero en el Mar Caribe. Como he pasado tanto tiempo en el agua y el mar fue mi hogar por mucho tiempo, sé la importancia de mantener nuestros mares y el uso de productos bio-degradables. Nunca usamos ningún producto que sea toxico para la vida oceánica o cualquier cosa que pueda dañar potencialmente nuestra vida marina.
The packaging for my surf wax is made out of 100% recycled paper, and even my ink is made out of all natural dyes. We use hand picked blueberries and strawberries for our wax scents. There are absolutely no synthetic additives or scents added to our product. It is by far one of the most eco-friendly surf waxes ever made.
El empaque de mi cera de surfear esta hecha de 100% papel reciclado y hasta la tinta es hecha de tintes naturales. Utilizamos arándanos y fresas recogidas a mano, para los aromas de la cera. No hay absolutamente ningún aditivo sintético en nuestro producto. Es, por mucho, una de las ceras de surf más respetuosas con el medio ambiente jamás hechas.

Classical Guitar Concert Concierto de Guitarra Clásica Ventana Al Mar / Rincón, Pr

n June 6, 2017, a varied audience of over two hundred distinguished citizens attended a classical guitar concert at Ventana al Mar in Rincón, Puerto Rico. Director and soloist Eladio Scharrón presented the concert, along with a quartet of guitarists from the Central University of Florida in Orlando, and a special guest, Remi Boucher from Quebec, Canada who played the final piece. It was a joyous concert, hopefully the first of many to come in the future.
l 6 de junio de 2017, una variedad de sobre doscientos distinguidos ciudadanos asistieron al concierto de guitarra clásica en Ventana al Mar en Rincón, Puerto Rico. El director y solista Eladio Scharrón, presentó el concierto, en conjunto con el cuarteto de guitarras de la Universidad Central de Florida, en Orlando, y con un invitado especial desde Quebec, Canadá, Remi Boucher, quien los deleito con la última pieza. Fue un jubiloso concierto, ójala el primero de muchos por venir en el futuro.
Eladio, a professor of classical guitar in Florida, was in Puerto Rico for an international guitar festival in San Sebastian. This is where he met Carlos A. González from the cultural center of Rincón. After getting to know each other, Eladio proposed the idea to hold a classical guitar concert in Rincón to Carlos. The two then worked together to find sponsors. After receiving a positive response from many of the local businesses in Rincón, the date was set, and the event took place without hindrance. Everyone enjoyed themselves so much they began asking, “When will the next concert be?”
Eladio, profesor de guitarra clásica en Florida, se encontraba en Puerto Rico para participar en un festival internacional de guitarra en San Sebastián. Allí fue donde conoció a Carlos A. González del Centro Cultural de Rincón. Después de establecer una amistad, Eladio propuso a Carlos la idea de un concierto de guitarra clásica en Rincón. Los dos trabajaron en conjunto para conseguir patrocinadores. Después de recibir una respuesta positiva de los muchos negocios locales en Rincón, la fecha fue establecida y el evento tuvo lugar sin obstáculos. Todo el mundo lo disfruto tanto, que comenzaron a preguntar, “¿Cuándo sería el próximo concierto?”
In the future, Eladio and Carlos hope to raise funds in order to hold regular concerts during the year . They also wish to reach out to different members of the community and to pique the interest of both the youth and international community. They would also like to thank the sponsors of the first concert: The Cultural Center of Rincón; The Cooperativa de Ahorro y Crédito de Rincón; The municipality of Rincón; Hotel Villa Cofresi; Supermercados Famcoop-Edwards Food Mart; and Altrusas de Rincón.
