SHAKESPEARE A PLAYWRIGHT FOR ALL TIMES PAG E 6

CLASSES FOR ADULTS AGE 50+

As we start a new semester, things are different around the world. We are all (temporarily) redefining what it means to gather, to celebrate, to connect. We want to take this moment to focus on what hasn’t changed: our appreciation for each of you. We are grateful for the enthusiasm you bring to class. For the gift of curiosity that you share. For the generous smiles between friends. And so much more. While technology is what allows us to gather today, we know that the true spirit of our community—the strength of our connection—comes from within each of you, no matter the distance. And that is cause for celebration. So, as we start a new semester, things are different around the world. But some things are very much the same. Because of you, our hearts are full.

OSHER | FALL 2020

American Eugenics: Addition by Subtraction?

The History and Development of the Musical Concerto

Dwight Eisenhower

The eugenics movement was popular in the United States during the first half of the 20th century as proponents supported “breeding out” undesirable genetic characteristics. Learn how this movement influenced Adolph Hitler.

This course will begin with the early history and formation of one of the most beloved of all musical forms: the concerto. Starting in the 1600s with the first glimmer of what a concerto was to become, we will move through the Baroque era with Vivaldi and Bach. Then we will listen and discuss the music of Mozart and Beethoven. The early romantic era will include Chopin and Mendelssohn ... setting the stage for the great piano and violin concertos of the late romantic era. We’ll end up with George Gershwin and some of the 20th century contributions to this ever-evolving style.

Raised in the small town of Abilene, Kansas, Dwight Eisenhower grew from humble beginnings to lead the Allied victory over Germany during WWII and served two successful terms as president of the United States. As Allied commander, he made the momentous decision to launch the D-Day assault that led to ultimate victory in the war in Europe. As president, though not without mistakes and controversy, he presided over eight years of peace and prosperity. Blaine Davies explores the life of this remarkable man who played such a key role in destroying Nazi tyranny and leading the free world through some of the most perilous years of the Cold War. MONDAY, SEPT. 14 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. Online via Zoom 1 day $15 Blaine Davies, MA

Medical Miracles Since You Were a Kid In 1940, the world stood on the threshold of many, if not most, of the astounding advances in the field of medicine. Since then, three generations of physicians and scientists have performed surgery on infants still in the womb, restored vision to the blind and hearing to the deaf, made organ transplants routine, and eliminated through drugs and vaccines diseases that killed tens of millions of children every year. Join us as we describe these and many other medical marvels that were once in the realm of science fiction. MONDAY, SEPT. 21 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. Online via Zoom 1 day $15 Philip Goscienski, MD

MONDAY, SEPT. 28 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. Online via Zoom 1 day $15 Frank Turner, MA

MONDAYS, OCT. 12 - NOV. 9 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. Online via Zoom 5 weeks $75 David Lewis, MA

Benjamin Franklin: America’s Original Renaissance Man Not even Thomas Jefferson claimed as many talents or excelled at as many different professions as Benjamin Franklin. Scientist, writer, publisher, diplomat, inventor, businessman—in his long life of 84 years, Franklin did them all. He contributed to the Declaration of Independence and played the key role in convincing France to join the United States in the Revolutionary War. When the Articles of Confederation proved too weak, he helped craft the compromise that enabled the Constitutional Convention to succeed in producing the Constitution of the United States. Blaine Davies examines the life of the witty, brilliant and at times irascible Benjamin Franklin, who shaped our national identity as much as any Founding Father. MONDAY, OCT. 5 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. Online via Zoom 1 day $15 Blaine Davies, MA

The Lost Cause: The Bemoanings of the South After its defeat in the Civil War, the South claimed the war had nothing to do with slavery, and a campaign was begun to soften its position in history and promote a pro-South perspective of the war and its causes.
