Isabella of Spain and the Origins of Modern Europe These two lectures will examine one of the most important figures in the rise of modern Europe, Queen Isabella of Spain. She oversaw the discovery of the Americas, planted the seeds for the 400+ year Spanish Empire, reformed the Catholic Church in Spain, established the Spanish Inquisition and drove out of Spain both the Jews and the Muslims. The Biden Administration’s Foreign Policy, Nine Months In The arrival of world leaders in New York in late September for the UN General Assembly provides President Biden with his first opportunity to meet numerous counterparts and formally speak to the world from perhaps its most recognizable platform. Friends and adversaries of the U.S. also will be making their cases and seeking to convince other countries to join them. To make sense of all this news, a retired U.S. diplomat will provide an update on President Biden’s foreign policy priorities and actions nine months after his inauguration. Having participated in a number of UN meetings over his 29-year career, our speaker will take a closer look at current international issues, future developments and ways to navigate the ever-growing sources of information about our world. How the Printing Press Changed the World From Johannes Gutenberg and moveable type to modern-day fine letterpress printing, learn about the changes in the printing press and technology, how it worked and why it mattered. We will look at videos and photos of printing presses from different ages and how the Linotype machine and other press improvements ended the age of hand-setting type except for a small number of modern practitioners. MONDAY, OCT. 4 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. Online via Zoom 1 day $15 Kim Keeline, PhD

The Great Conductors and Pianists of the 20th Century Now that we have conquered the task of teaching online, there is a huge benefit. We can now view concerts and performances from the comfort of our homes. This format lends itself perfectly to our discussion of conductors and pianists. In this class we will be able to see and hear some of the greatest performers of the century. We will then discuss their various styles and performance practices, all the while listening to wonderful music. This will be a fun and informative journey with a new and different perspective.

OSHER | FALL 2021

The Monuments Men is an Allied group established during World War II, known officially as the Monuments, Fine Arts and Archives program. Its members helped protect and preserve items of European cultural heritage against bombing and looting. Initially focused on preserving historic buildings, they ultimately recovered an enormous collection of art that the Nazis had stolen. As Hitler

led his forces during WWII, in the background his armies carried out a campaign to plunder art and cultural relics for a museum he had planned. While the Monuments Men was a small organization, its members saved much of the heisted art so future generations can still enjoy these treasures. The Life and Times of Niccolò Machiavelli Niccolò Machiavelli (1470-1527) is one of history’s most intriguing and enigmatic figures. A Florentine diplomat, Machiavelli viewed humanity with the pragmatism of a statesman, the passion of a philosopher and the detachment of a bystander. Divorcing politics from morality, his memorable treatise, The Prince, presented a sinister and cynical view of humanity and the human condition. And although lionized by a few, Machiavelli’s political principles have been greatly scorned by most and his name has become synonymous with the worst in politics. This presentation will examine Machiavelli’s fascinating ideas and explain why and how both the man and his views were the product of the turbulent times in which he lived. OSHER | FALL 2021

The Turbulent History of U.S. Presidential Elections Since our first presidential election, when the nation unanimously elected George Washington, the history of presidential elections in the United States has been marked by controversy and backroom deals. On a few occasions, presidential elections have been decided by the House of Representatives. Blaine Davies explores the turbulent history of our presidential elections dating back to the days when only white men with property were allowed to vote. A few presidential elections remain controversial to this day, including Jefferson vs. Adams in 1800, Jackson vs. Adams in 1824, Lincoln’s election in 1860, Hayes vs. Tilden in 1876 and Gore vs. Bush in 2000. WEDNESDAY, NOV. 3 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. CSUSM - ELB 431 1 day $15 Blaine Davies, MA

Thurgood Marshall: The Battle Against Jim Crow A national holiday commemorates Dr. Martin Luther King. Movies portray the lives of Jackie Robinson and Malcolm X. Even so, the civil rights leader that brought about the most significant, lasting change in the 20th century is Thurgood Marshall. Beginning his legal work with the NAACP in 1934, Marshall won case after case—often at great personal risk—bringing justice to black Americans. Culminating with his victory in the historic Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision in 1954, Marshall more than anyone else brought an end to legal segregation in the United States. Appointed to the Supreme Court in 1967, Marshall joined the fraternity of liberal justices that guaranteed the constitutional rights of all Americans. WEDNESDAY, NOV 10 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. CSUSM - ELB 431 1 day $15 Blaine Davies, MA

In 1924, Congress enacted the National Origins Act. Prejudicial in nature, the act used immigration quotas to dramatically curtailed immigration to the United States from southern and eastern Europe and called for the total exclusion of all Chinese and Japanese immigrants. This lecture will compare and contrast the situation in 1924 with U.S. immigration policy throughout the life of the republic. It will illustrate how and why U.S. immigration policy is often shaped by changes in the international geopolitical situation. The underlying reasons for many of the more controversial immigration laws bear remarkable similarities (especially 1924 and today). Shakespeare’s Macbeth: Play Analysis Join Kim Keeline as she examines one of Shakespeare’s finest (and shortest) tragedies. She will examine King James’ influence on the story, the sources of the story (including Lady Macbeth’s first name) and look closely at the themes and some of the best speeches. Filmed examples of scenes will be shared. What was the purpose of the gatekeeper scene? Should Macbeth fear no man that’s born of woman? And what’s up with the Hecate witch scene? Join the march of Birnam Wood to Dunsinane hill and find out! WEDNESDAYS, OCT. 20 - 27 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. CSUSM - ELB 404, Hybrid* 2 weeks $30 Kim Keeline, PhD

Art has evolved throughout time with cultural changes and the unfolding of societal events as steadily as the tides. Artists are continuously influenced by a wealth of the masterwork before them and works in their own time that bring new meaning, vision and depth to the arts. Novel approaches and ideas, often controversial, provide a fertile ground and exciting new paths to be explored by artists. To create anew is a challenge: ideas, media, techniques, approach and style all help artists express new ways to comprehend the world. The Life and Work of Michelangelo Michelangelo Buonarroti is rightly considered one of the most outstanding artists in the history of art: sculptor, painter and architect. What were the conflicting forces within this man that produced some of the most sublime works of art in existence? How did his clashes with the pope figure in several of Michelangelo’s masterpieces? This lecture will cover his life and all of his most outstanding works. Come join art historian Douglas Barker for a look at this fascinating artistic genius. Independence Corrupted: How America’s Judges Make Their Decisions Charles Benjamin Schudson is a Wisconsin reserve judge emeritus and adjunct professor of law. A former state and federal prosecutor, trial and appellate judge, and Fulbright Scholar, he understands judicial decision-making. He exposes the personal, professional and political pressures threatening judicial integrity like never before. With scholarship and impassioned accounts of compelling cases, he brings readers behind the trial bench to see judges analyzing actual trials and sentences. He opens the doors to appellate chambers to hear judges debating life and death, multimilliondollar damages and priceless civil rights. Responding to the intensifying attacks on America’s judges, Independence Corrupted is essential reading for students and scholars, lawyers and judges, and all citizens concerned about the survival of judicial independence. THURSDAY, SEPT. 2 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. Online via Zoom 1 day Free to Members Hon. Charles Benjamin Shudson
