Have You Checked Your Personality Lately? Are you the same person you think you are? Are you the same person everyone else thinks you are? Would you like to try a few, very short personality quizzes? OK, this is really just for fun! It’s absolutely no real attempt to analyze you, and you don’t have to divulge the outcomes. During the session, we’ll do four or five exercises such as the Sherwin Williams color preference quiz, the canoe test and a very short (10 questions) exercise. You will receive advance links to a version of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and the Enneagram personality test, which you are encouraged to complete prior to the class (no charge for the tests). We will explore these two in some depth. We’ll poll the class to see the range of personas indicated. Who knows what we might learn? OSHER | SUMMER 2022

| MONDAY COURSES The Long Goodbye: The American Revolution in Britain Seen through American eyes, the Revolution marks a triumphant moment. Through British eyes, it looked quite different. To the king, the war for independence was an affront, a temper tantrum by an ungrateful colonial rabble. But, as historian Richard Bell explains, beyond the palace and Parliament, British responses to the war were anything but monolithic. The country was bitterly divided as to what the war was about, how to win it and whether it was worth it. MONDAY, JUNE 6 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. Online via Zoom 1 day $15 Richard Bell, PhD

The Fighting Irish: Ireland and the American Revolution Men of Irish heritage played crucial roles in fighting the American Revolution, siding with the patriots against the British army in overwhelming numbers. In this program, the English-born but American-trained historian Richard Bell explores the Revolution from the perspective of the Irish and their descendants in America. Drawing on the latest scholarship, Bell reconstructs the history of English and Irish antagonism, the role of the Roman Catholic religious faith in decisions about loyalty and affiliation, and the political and economic impact of the American Revolution on Ireland itself. MONDAY, JUNE 13 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.. Online via Zoom 1 day $15 Richard Bell, PhD

San Diego: A Women’s History Some of the most popular stories of San Diego focus on men as the great leaders of our city’s past. But what about the role women have played making San Diego “America’s Finest City”? In this talk Dr. David Miller, PhD, will explore the many women who have shaped San Diego from the earliest Kumeyaay and Spanish settlements, to Old Town, the 19th century, through World War II and beyond. Join us on Zoom to explore San Diego: A Women’s History. MONDAY, JUNE 20 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. Online via Zoom 1 day $15 David Miller, PhD

| TUESDAY COURSES The Disneyland Railroad: How Walt’s Passion for Trains Started the Theme Parks Walt Disney was introduced to steam locomotives as a hobby by some of his animators. He built a rideable train in his backyard and eventually planned a train for Disneyland. Some say he built a train set and then put a park inside it, rather than the other way around. Learn about Walt’s history with railroading and also about the many different trains that have been in Disneyland. TUESDAY, JUNE 7 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. CSUSM - ELB 470, Hybrid* 1 day $15 Kim Keeline, PhD

Audio-Animatronics: How Disneyland Imagineers Brought 3D Animals and People to Life The most popular attractions at Disneyland and other theme parks are greatly enhanced by the robotic animals and people who help to convey the story as guests pass by. The Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean and Walt Disney’s

TUESDAY, JUNE 14 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. CSUSM - ELB 470, Hybrid* 1 day $15 Kim Keeline, PhD

The History of Money: From Roman Coins to Crypto Coins Money makes the world go around, and money takes us around the world. But, what’s the history behind money? Why do we value paper money even though it is just a representation of something else? Money has moved from its distant past of Roman salaries (sacks of salt) to gold coins in the Dark Ages and Middle Ages to digital replicas in the computer era. Money went from a round, metal representation with an emperor’s profile to rectangular plastic items called credit cards. And money is now moving to zeros and ones in the crypto era. Let´s talk about this trajectory. TUESDAY, JUNE 21 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. 1 Day $15 CSUSM - ELB 470; Hybrid* Alejandro Castañeda, PhD

Nancy Drew: The Story Behind America’s Favorite Teen Sleuth Chances are you’ve read some or all of the Nancy Drew books available when you were a child. In nearly 90 years, she has both entertained and inspired generations through her independence and inquisitiveness. Modern mystery books often have Nancy Drew references. Women leaders have repeatedly named her as an inspiration for their career choices. The story behind Nancy Drew, her creation and the books written and revised over time, is one of Carolyn Keene’s greatest mysteries.

TUESDAY, JUNE 28 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. CSUSM - ELB 470, Hybrid* 1 day $15 Kim Keeline, PhD

The Women’s Movement: Past, Present and Future In 1776, Abigail Adams wrote to her husband, John, “I desire you would remember the ladies and be more generous and favorable to them than your ancestors. ... If particular care and attention is not paid to the ladies, we are determined to foment a rebellion.” A movement was born in those words that continues today. This course follows the women’s rights movement from the inception of this country, through suffrage, the Equal Rights Amendment, #MeToo and beyond. TUESDAYS, JUNE 7 - 28 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. CSUSM - ELB 470, Hybrid* 4 weeks $60 Karen Eso, MA

• KIM KEELINE, PhD, fell in love with Shakespeare’s plays when she was 12 years old. Her PhD in English literature is from the University of Southern California and she has lectured extensively on Shakespeare. She writes mysteries and published two short stories in 2020. A book collector, steam train operator and freelance website and graphic designer, Keeline geeks out about history, technology and books. • KAREN ESO, MA, has been a professor at Cal State San Marcos

Despite an unremarkable childhood, mediocre grades at West Point and a lackluster military career up to the Civil War, Ulysses S. Grant became one of the most consequential leaders in American history. He was the greatest general of the Civil War and, with the exception of Abraham Lincoln, no man did more to preserve the Union. As president, he confronted the Ku Klux Klan, protecting the rights of millions of newly freed Black Americans. In two lectures, Blaine Davies presents the life of this humble Midwestern man. Women in Folklore and Myth

• HOLLY GILZOW, MA, has a background in psychological science and more than seven years of experience researching selective trust in children as well as cognition and visual memory in adults. Both her BA and MA were completed at CSUSM. She’s been involved with teaching introductory psychology classes as well as sensation/perception, research methods and critical thinking. • SAM AND CANDY CAPONEGRO have worked in all aspects of theater for over 40 years. They hope to keep the classic movie musical and the golden age of Broadway alive through their lectures.

What does the evil stepmother trope say about women navigating powerful roles that exclude traditional motherhood? Folklore and myth are rife with examples of the “monstrous female,” but even more interesting are the commonalities found among their backstories and how these things were said to shape them (e.g., Medusa). The stories we tell today play out in a vast array of media, from movies and video games to books and art. They are both our entertainment and a reflection of our individual selves and larger societal groups. So, too, the myth and folklore of the past; it was far more to those telling it than simple entertainment. How did these stories both shape ideas about women and reflect currently held fears and biases? How many of these ideas persist? In pursuit of these answers and more, we will visit women in myth and folklore from all over the world. WEDNESDAY, JUNE 15 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. CSUSM - ELB 470, Hybrid* 1 day $15 Holly Gilzow, MA

According to some experts, singing and musical show tunes lead to mental clarity. True or not, this lecture will explore the history of the early movie musical. Beginning with The Jazz Singer in 1927, film musicals changed the entertainment industry. Clips from the period include performances by Mae West, Bing Crosby and the extravaganzas of Busby Berkeley.

Second Half: Stepping Out With Movie Musicals of the 1930s During the Depression, film musicals helped the audience escape hard times. Clips include scenes with Shirley Temple, James Cagney, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, and the Marx Brothers.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 22 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. Online via Zoom 1 day $15 Sam and Candy Caponegro

Good Neighbor Musicals of WWII First Half: Good Neighbor Musicals Of WWII WWII brought us the Good Neighbor Policy films. These colorful extravaganzas starred Alice Faye, Betty Grable and Carmen Miranda, the Brazilian Bombshell. Other wartime musicals include Yankee Doodle Dandy and Thank Your Lucky Stars.

Second Half: MGM Star Musicals (1940s) MGM studios claimed they had more stars than heaven. And they did. Featured clips will include Gene Kelly, Lucille Ball, Lena Horne, June Allyson, Fred Astaire, and of course, Judy Garland. WEDNESDAY, JUNE 29 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. Online via Zoom 1 day $15 Sam and Candy Caponegro

Great Moments in Cinema: 1945 – 1991 The end of WWII set off a chain of events that pulled interest from Hollywood’s Golden Era and led to creative outbursts around the globe, eventually leading back to Tinseltown. At this time, world cinema grew as Cold War distractions created a gap in the U.S. releases. We’ll screen Francois Truffaut’s homage to Singin’ in the Rain, John Huston’s “lost” WWII documentary Let There Be Light, Akira Kurosawa’s The Hidden Fortress (which inspired the Star Wars saga), Herbert Biberman’s Salt of the Earth (the most infamous blacklisted movie), Jules Dassin’s feisty heist Rififi, Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, Roman Polanski’s Chinatown and Michael Moore’s flawed but

This course will trace the history of Jerusalem through the Jebusite period, to the Roman period, to the Islamic period, to today. It will consider why Jerusalem matters so much to so many, and how, today, it remains a pluralistic city with deep meaning and a vibrant history. prescient Roger & Me. We’ll terminate this section with what is in several ways the beginning of what’s to come: James Cameron’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

Romeo and Juliet Two contrasting impressions come to mind when we think of the play. Our first impression is that of a passionate, all-consuming romance between a boy and a girl who risk everything for each other in the most sublime expression of young love that has ever existed. The second impression is like a photo negative of the first— two reckless, hormonal teenagers whose irresponsible, whirlwind affair leads to the deaths of several of their friends and relatives as well as to their own tragic suicides. As much as we might like to say we agree with the latter, more cynical view, it’s the former one—the paradoxically inspiring portrayal of romantic love— that has made Romeo and Juliet a favorite of theatergoers for more than 400 years. Over 90 minutes or so, I will take you through the play, highlighting seven lessons I’ve found in it, reciting some of the famous speeches and discussing its fascinating performance history. His work has been featured in The Huffington Post as well as the BBC, and he has served as the historical advisor for a recent Holocaust documentary. • ROB CRISELL, MA, is an author, attorney, actor, and Shakespearean.
