SPRING 2023

CSUSM’s Medical Assistant training program is celebrating the start of its 13th cohort this spring! Since the program was founded in 2016, more than 300 individuals have graduated with the skills needed to enter the healthcare field and excel as a medical assistant.

A recent review of the first 10 cohorts shows that 90% of trainees graduated from the program and 79% of the graduates were employed as medical assistants at the time of the survey.

Developed in partnership between CSUSM and Vista Community Clinic, this six-month program prepares students to work in a variety of settings through a combination of classroom training and clinical experience. Topics range from understanding basic human anatomy and physiology to learning about medical billing procedures and how to assist with examinations. Those who complete the program are qualified to sit for the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant exam.

“I’m putting into practice everything I learned,” says graduate Lirio Balbuena Romero, lead medical assistant and family planning health educator at Vista Community Clinic.

A Way With Words

Nearing retirement age and working at a physically demanding job, Sandra Ceballos was looking for a transition to a career that she could do for the rest of her life. She is fluent in both Spanish and English and found a new direction in interpreting, aided by the Healthcare Interpreting certificate program at Cal State San Marcos. Now qualified as a healthcare interpreter, Ceballos also passed the CCHI CHI™ national certification exam and is building her skills with paid assignments. The course was challenging, she says, but it provided the skills and professional knowledge she needs to be successful. “The more you work for something, the more you value it,” she says. “The possibilities are endless.”

One of the first activities was a fast-paced conversation with a peer and I listened 20 percent of the time. I zoned out! Conversations are crucial to the employee because they are expecting you to be in the moment with them and for you to understand what they are going through.
