The Amazing Life of Wilfred H. Mensching: A True Story from the Greatest Generation
Mindfulness
U.S. Historical Novels – A “Novel” Way to Learn History
World War II was a sentinel event that defined a generation—our “Greatest Generation.” These are the men and women who faced seemingly insurmountable odds, stared down tyranny and genocide, and ultimately triumphed. Experience WWII and life as a prisoner of war through the eyes of one amazing member of the Greatest Generation. Learn how his story of sacrifice, loyalty and dedication continues to inspire future generations to strive toward excellence for their community and country. MONDAY, JUNE 8 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. Online via Zoom 1 day $15 Aaron Byzak, MBA
This experiential course is an introduction to the practice of mindfulness. Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a blend of meditation, body awareness and yoga: learning through practice and study how your body handles (and can resolve) stress. This course is designed for beginners, but it is also suitable for those with experience who want to refine their practice. Classes will consist of a combination of lecture, practice and discussion. TUESDAYS, MAY 26 - JUNE 23 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. Online via Zoom 5 weeks $75 Karen Eso, MA
What can we learn about history from historical novels? Blaine Davies describes U.S. historical novels and explains how they help us better experience the dramatic events that shaped our nation firsthand. History is a lot more interesting when you explore it from the perspective of the people who were present but didn’t know the outcome. Professor Davies describes a wide range of U.S. historical novels dealing with almost every aspect of U.S. history and discusses how a well-written novel makes history come alive. WEDNESDAY, MAY 27 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. Online via Zoom 1 day $15 Blaine Davies, MA
Plagues and Pandemics
Cross-Cultural Communications
Infectious diseases have always been a part of human existence but man has manipulated his environment to allow new patterns of disease to emerge. We no longer fear the Black Death or smallpox but terrorism has brought them to our attention. Can these terrible plagues return? Should we worry about Ebola, Zika and anthrax? COVID-19, the latest in a series of coronavirus epidemics, is a test of our resources and resilience. Learn the real story of influenza, how to ensure safe travel to exotic places and how to avoid the nastiest germs.
Just as there are many ways that culture per se varies, there are also many ways in which behavior varies across cultures. It is important to recognize that culture is learned and helps people in their efforts to interact and communicate with others in society and professional environments. How do cultures vary? There are several basic dimensions that differentiate cultures. In this program we will examine the most important of these: how people see themselves, individuals’ relationship to their world, individualism versus collectivism, and the time dimension.

In this course, we will discuss the movies directed by Steven Spielberg that seem more personal than his films appealing to fantasy-adventure audiences. Following Raiders of the Lost Ark, some viewers noticed patterns in Spielberg’s movies that seemed to identify him as an auteur exploring themes connected to his own personality. After the 1980s, as Spielberg became more successful as a producer, he directed several movies that seemed close to his heart and distant from his foundation of fans.

Five Notable Female Artists The influence of these notable women as artists continues to be felt well into our time. This lecture— accompanied by high-quality reproductions of the artists’ work— helps clarify the important influence women have had on the history of art. The lecture demonstrates how each of these charismatic individuals contributed powerful formal and thematic values to the history of art, beginning in the 19th century and moving well into the 20th century. Audiences will savor the intimate domestic world of Berthe Morisot, the brooding power of Louise Nevelson, the organic stylization of Lee Krasner (wife of Jackson Pollock), the imaginative realm of Grace Hartigan, and the monumental, lyrically expressive paintings of Joan Mitchell.
