LIFESTYLE, POTENTIAL INCOME AND LIFESTYLE 212\ Curlew Drive, LANITZA The main dwelling was completed in 2015, is fully approved by the local authorities and has five years (approx) of builders warranty insurance remaining. It is fully insulated in the walls and double insulated in the ceiling. - The second, older cottage on the property is approved as a studio and has an approved septic tank. The toilet in the main dwelling is a top of the line composting toilet (research Nature Loo if interested). - This is a split block with approximately 15 acres at the house site and the other 17 acres (a bush parcel) some 500 metres away to the North West. This is quite common to the Lanitza area and the bush block may be used for cropping, grazing and perhaps a shed (more details available). - There are four water tanks holding close to 70,000 litres of water. - Power comes from the sun with a stand-alone solar system with batteries less than 12 months old. If grid power is preferred, it is right at the front of the property with a connection wire running underground to the house. All that is needed is a transformer and connection is simple. - There is a water bore drilled about 40m deep which is used to water garlic crops several times a day. Approximately 2000 litres per day.

IN FOCUS

PARKRUN

Self vs Self

Parkrun Australia is a not for profit organisatio n designed to increase participation in running & other sports throughout the country. Since its inception in 2004, parkrun has grown to have hundreds of events held every Saturday morning in co untries such as the United Kingdom, USA, South Africa, New Zealand and even the Camp Bastion British military base in Afghanistan!

The mainstay of p arkrun events is that they are sim ple and offer no barriers to taking part. Yo u can run, jog or walk, bring your dog on a lead, push your children in a pram, and can be 5 years old or 105. How fast do I have to be? We all run for our own enjoyment. Please come along and join in whatever your pace! What does it cost t o join in?

What is Grafton parkrun? It is a 5km run - it's you against the clock. When is it ? Every Saturday at 7:00 am. Where is it ? The event tak es place in Barnier Park, Corner of Pine Street and Back Lane, Junction Hill, NSW 2460.

Nothing - it's free! Just make sure you register before your first run, and o nly ever register with parkrun o nce. Don't forget to bring a printed copy of your barcode (request a remin der). If you forget it, you won't get a time. Want to get involved? Grafton parkrun needs you! It is entirely organised by volunteers - email graftonhelpers@par kr un.com to help.

8:30 AM – Planning the day

HOCKEY - WOMENS

The start of my day is dictated by my calendar and my new emails. Synching the two every morning lets me see what I’ve alrea dy got booked, and what new events need to be tended to today.

A Saturday at hockey made i nterestingKaren and Shelley vs Sarah in a friendly game.

My email account is normally filled with maintenance requests and enquiries, so it’s important to prioritise what is considered urgent, and what can be handled and sorted througho ut that day .

Sarah claims to have ‘gone easy’ in an attempt at getting in good with the boss. With an own goal supposedly the reason for their loss, Sarah says she will get ‘em next time. – Bridgett Mawhirt

ICE HOCKEY After spending weeks working up the courage, my friend and I took the drive down to Coffs Harbour to take part in our very first game of Ice Hockey. Freezing cold and all padded up we made our debut as the only girls on the rink. Such a great expe rience skating around, falling over and one o n one’s to see who would bite the… ice. – Bridgett Mawhirt

2460 – Clarence Valley Property Guide | 5

HOCKEY - MENS Men’s hockey is home to some very passio nate and united clubs. From Minkey to A Grade, all ages are gett ing involved in the great game. With men’s teams no w traveling to play in Premier League competitions, the level of great hockey is reaching an all -time high. The Royals took out the competition last year, and the games are set to heat up in the lead up to finals. – Bridgett Mawhirt

SOCCER Although regularly spending time outdoors, I hadn’t taken part in regular team sports since my days smash ing indoor cricket – which was quite a long time ago now. This is my second season playing SOS in Grafton, and I am loving every minute of it. Every game is a new game, and I look forward to them every week. – Jaz Grady Elders Grafton – Monthly Digest | 6

RUGBY Typical of any (smart) front rower, here I am standing to the side of the ruck, staying good and clear out of the way (and finding time for a breather too). I was clearly in fine fo rm, which would attest to our win in that particular game against the Bananas. – Angus McDonald

AFL This is a picture of the rarest moment in sport - me actually getting off the ground and catching a ball. I know there is not a great deal of support for AFL in the region , but I do love the physicality and the overall fitness you need to have to play the spo rt properly. This was taken in the grand final in which we won, and was incredibly specia l as I got to do it with my brother. – Ben Holder ENDURANCE RIDING Endurance horse riding - it isn't everybody’s cuppa tea - but it has been something that I have been passio na te about for quite a few years. After being introduced to it in 2012, it has been my favourite pas time (when I have the time), and I’m still amazed at the strength needed to co mpete, let alone get a place! – Brooke Lancaster

BARE F OOT BOWLS CHARITY DAY The time was 9:45am. The red -hot and in-form Elders team had assembled , ready for a hard game, dressed in team colours - all except fo r Bridgett (which we made go home and change). The time was 9:55am . The game day announcer was assem bling the teams to their respected ends. We elected Karen to be our team anchor and guide our team to what would be our maiden victory on the G.D.S.C. greens. 2460 – Clarence Valley Property Guide | 7

A personal note Ryan Creed, Sales Professional In August last year I was lyin g in bed in a full leg brace, unable to hold weight, recovering from my second knee reconstruction. Previous to my injury I would go jogging most mornings , but of course, laying there recovering, running was the last thing on my mind.

I became aware of Parkrun a few years ago being held in locations outside of Grafton. Late last year whilst I was hobbling a round on crutches Grafton hosted its first Parkrun. I was excited to see it started in The Valley, but was in no state to take part, and really wasn’t sure if I ever would be.

Elders Grafton – Monthly Digest | 8

Since then , there have been 34 Grafton Parkruns completed , in which and amazing 746 individuals have particip ated – that equates to 88 days 17 hours 0 minutes a nd 45 seconds worth of running! January 2 nd was the day I first completed Parkrun and it changed my life. I was absolutely overwhelmed by the sense of community and the positivity created by a group of peo ple sharing the same passio n, enjoying t heir activity with one another. Not only was I impressed by how professio nally it was run and the diversity of the participants but I was blown away the willingness of peo ple to volunteer their time early on a Saturd ay morning so that peo ple like me can arrive and enjoy a 5km timed run (not to mention have results and photos po sted on the day).

Huffing and puffing m y way through Saturdays morning s fo r the last 6 months has rewarded me with many things.

Little Athletics Au stralia who ran 5km faster than what I tho ught was humanly possible.

I have enjoyed some beautiful mornings & met some amazing people , as well as made new friends along the way.

I have also found myself completing Parkrun courses in Bowral as well as Lismore which has inspired me to participate in this year's City2Surf .

Some notable mentio ns are the 11 year old boy and girl that beat me to the finish line every week - who I will never catch - and the Coaching & Developme nt Officer of

Parkrun is just another example of why Grafton and the people that live here are so wonderful.

Don’t put it off Start today There’s no better time than right now to set your goals and get things moving. Whether it be about building fitness, preparing yourself for a bigger event, shaking off the co bwebs or even just getting outside, parkrun offers you the perfect opportunity – the rest is up to 2460 – Clarence Valley Property Guide | 9 you.

HOCKEY, HOCKEY, HOCKEY - w o r d s b y B r i d ge t t M a w h i r t

How to accurately describe the Grafton Hockey Association in only a few words? With the current member count being on estimate over 1000 - not including the parents, coaches and officials – the members of the clubs make up a fair portion of the Clarence Valley.

Grafton Hockey Association has come a long way through the years - with bare grass fields dating back to 1939 - to the building of the Canteen and officials area. With the hockey family growing, the call for more up to date facilities was rising.

With so many clubs and organisations involved in the making and the running of hockey in The Valley, it is quite a family sport, taking up the majority of Saturdays with juniors in the morning and seniors in the afternoon (often followed by a traditional trip to a local watering hole).

With this came the first turf in Grafton - SAND!

Along with many others, for me, Hockey is just a part of the life. With my father playing from a young age, he led two of my brothers and myself to know how to hold a stick even before we could count.

It was a new concept for hockey - faster, harder (and at some times more painful) - with people now showing scars from the rough surface of the turf. This was just the start of bigger and better things, and with the first water turf being constructed in 2004, it was the beginning of a new direction for Grafton Hockey. ‘The Brent Livermore Field’ gave new and old players something to look forward to - a brand new field!

“Grafton Hockey to me means fun, friends and family. Seeing all age groups being able to enjoy the same sport is wonderful.” - Lyn Newby President of the Grafton Hockey Association

E l d e r s G r a f t o n – M o n t h l y D i g e s t | 12

In 2011 the committee was given the opportunity to build another new turf. The ‘Legends’ field was transformed (from what some would call a battle field) to a shiny new water turf that had great advantages. The coming of a second turf gave Grafton Hockey an edge, creating the ability to hold multiple championships and carnivals, and putting us on the map. Representative hockey forms a big part of the association now as girls, boys, women and men travel near and far (normally far… not to mention cold!) to compete at many different levels of social and competition hockey. The level of hockey in Grafton is climbing and fast. For some it is all or nothing, Olympics is #GOALS and ‘little old Grafton’ proudly claims bragging rights of our very own Brent Livermore – Captaining the Kookaburras and winning gold at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

I think I speak for everyone that is involved in hockey in Grafton in saying that we are genuinely lucky to have our complex and our committees that keep us running. For years our association was split, with men’s hockey forming one side and women’s the other, but with the recent amalgamation some would say Grafton hockey has never seen better days. A form of unification was found. We aren’t all about the field hockey though. In years past, Grafton has produced championship teams in Indoor Hockey, traveling away to compete and take out the gold at numerous competitions. Indoor and field hockey are similar in many ways but different in others, with indoor being much faster and much more compact - but still just as fun. The spirit, unity and family that is always present in the clubs will never die, and warmly welcomes all newcomers to its guild.

REDMEN RUGBY - w o r d s b y An gu s M c D o n a l d

Redmen Rugby - or formally known as the Grafton Rugby Union Football Club - was established in February 1969 after a long term shortage of rugby in Grafton. With President Dick Roberts, team Captain Stan Pitkin and the club’s first official coach Brian Johnson at the helm, the newly formed club was guided towards their first grand final appearance in their first season. Sadly the boys didn’t bring home something for the mantel, losing to the Lismore Marist Brothers 13 nil. Today, the Redmen are fielding two senior teams in the Mid North Coast Competition. Coached by Ray Collie, the first grade team is pushing towards securing a finals spot with a string of home games to complete the season as is the second grade team.

HAWTHORN PARK The Redmen play at Grafton Rugby Park, which is located on Hay Street South Grafton. Where else has so much to offer to cover your equestrian needs? Nowhere comes to my mind. Between Hawthorne Park and the Grafton Showground, we certainly do have it all. Located off Minden Street South Grafton, Hawthorne Park helps support over 10 different equestrian clubs which all have different disciplines. With some there is only one similarity and that is the involvement of a horse. This park is the Clarence Valley’s premier equestrian facility. Boasting three sand arenas, a main show ring, pony club/polocrosse fields, two amenities blocks, powered camping sites and loads of safe secure stables, you can see why there local and interstate events held here.

MOST locals would either know Buck from various markets where he has traded his produce for more than a decade or from his role entertaining the older folk in most of the nursing homes in Grafton. With his unique take on songs from the 30s, 40s and 50s and his ability to impersonate some of the classic old crooners such as Jim Reeves, Slim Dusty, Perry Como and Al Jolson, Buck has kept these gorgeous seniors entertained for six years and counting. He volunteers as an entertainer through the New School of Arts.

He’s had a colourful and book-worthy past and the future looks just as bright for the mercurial BUCK DONALD. He’s healed celebrities, won and lost fortunes and has partied with the best of them. But these days Buck Donald prefers a simple life on his farm at Curlew Drive, Lanitza. Terry Deefholts, who is taking Buck’s farm to auction on June 28th, catches up with this local identity for 2460.

“I get to know so many of these lovely people, some of them up to 105 years old,” said Buck over a cuppa. “They seem to like talking to me, they have so many great stories, you can imagine.” “The oldies relive great memories when I play to them – I notice they respond to music. I see even some of the more incapacitated ladies and gents moving their feet and mouthing the words … some of them barely move unless they hear music.” ”It’s just so wonderful to see there is a reaction.” As a known voice impersonator, Buck has learnt at least 250 songs for senior cits and has recorded 3 CDs for his target market. He asked his audience to vote for the songs that he ended up recording on his latest release Special Memories.

He contemplates his songs amongst the garlic plants and rosella bushes and says he’ll miss the farm and his local audience greatly. But now it’s time for Buck to move on. He and Miyuki and their nine-year-old son BJ are heading north to Queensland where Buck will meet up with lifelong friends to live out his twilight years.
